Electrolux Summer Ready Home guest speaker Amina Aranaz-Alunan, founder, executive director and teacher of SoFA Design Institute, and Creative Director of fashion accessories and bag label ARANÁZ, talked about hot trends in home decorating in the summer, shared ideas for DIY projects, and also gave some budget-friendly tips for moms on giving their homes a summer makeover. 

Meanwhile, Janice Villanueva, successful mompreneur and founder of Mommy Mundo, a community of moms dedicated to making motherhood easier, shared her Summer Ready Home Checklist, with hacks on keeping the home clean and clutter-free and fun summer activities for the family. 

For the kitchen, Villanueva talked about the importance of cleaning out the refrigerator, including all compartments and interiors, throwing out expiring food and restocking on fresh food, including a mix of different kinds of foods that kids will like. 

She advised moms to put these in easy to access containers so the kids (if age appropriate) can help themselves when they’re hungry. 

Villanueva also reminded moms to sit down with the helpers to plan a menu since kids will be home all day – and to make sure they have healthy morning snacks and a filling merienda so kids don’t grab junk food in between. 

When it comes to cooking, homemakers should make sure to clean the kitchen stove top and oven to make sure things are running properly. Cooking or baking sessions with the kids are also a great summer activity that teaches them a new skill while allowing moms to bond with them. 

Hot and humid weather also means more allergens so moms should make sure to vacuum sofas, curtains, the rugs and even the bed and stuffed animals! Moms can even teach the kids to vacuum. 

“It’s actually a lot of fun for them and you can also reward them for doing chores,” Villanueva said.

With school opening on the horizon, it’s time to start thinking about not only the contents of your kids book bags but also what’s inside their lunch boxes. Creating packed lunches and snacks for your kids is not only a great way to save but the way to make sure they eat nutritious food.

Protein

Found in meat products, protein is required for growth and repair of muscles, as well as iron. For healthier baon, use lean meat or fish like salmon and tuna as your protein source or instead of frying meat, give them cold cuts or tuna in a sandwich.

Whether you’re aiming for a beach-ready bod or simply want to shed a few pounds, summer is a great time to start a healthier diet. To help you get started, Electrolux has put together a few simple tips on healthier food substitutes and ways to prepare food that will help pave the way for that slimmer silhouette.

Microwave your veggies

Did you know that cooking veggies in your microwave is a great way to preserve its nutrients?

Any cooking method utilizing heat and water tends to destroy the nutrients that make vegetables so good for us - for example, powerhouse vegetable spinach loses about 77% of its folate when boiled on the stove, but retains nearly all of it when cooked in a microwave.

This is because microwave ovens cook by vibrating water molecules within food, thus producing heat. It does not change the chemical composition of food in any way. As an added bonus, fresh vegetables, with their high water content can be cooked more quickly than other foods in a microwave oven.

Microwave ovens like the Electrolux EMS2348X comes with auto-cooking features that optimizes the time required to cook varying amounts of vegetables with just a few easy turns of the control knob.

To cook vegetables in your microwave oven, simply place them in a microwave-safe dish and add a small amount of water depending on the vegetables being cooked. Cover the dish with a safe plastic wrap and poke several holes or leave a corner open to allow the steam to vent.

Add spice to your meals with chili

Chili peppers are not just beneficial for health, but also for your waistline. Thanks to an antioxidant called capsaicin, chillies and other spices have been found to diminish appetite and accelerate your metabolism, helping your body burn fat at higher rate.

Puree your way to a healthier you

Purees can be a low calorie, low fat replacement in certain foods like soups, salad dressings and deserts.

Creamy soups are a much-loved comfort food, both for its creamy taste and texture. For a low-fact alternative, pureeing the soup with cooked potatoes or tofu will give it that thick texture. Tofu can also be used as a substitute for sour cream in salads.

Meanwhile fruit purees shine in baking and desserts. One quarter cup of pureed apples and pears will replace one egg in a cake recipe. They not only add moisture but a fruity flavour to the cake. If the pureed fruit makes the cake denser than you would like, add half to one teaspoon of baking powder to get a lighter result.

Top up your salad the healthy way

A tablespoon of mayonnaise contains about 100 calories while olive oil has 120. Cheeses like feta and parmesan can add 20 to 50 calories to the total. If you are having salads with bacon or crispy (in other words, fried) chicken, that ratchet up the calorie and fat count. Top if off with dressings like Thousand Island and your salad can weigh in at over 600 calories.

To help make your salads healthier, choose toppings that provide protein instead of fat like tuna, chickpeas and eggs. If you want meat toppings, go for a healthier cooking method, like sautéing, braising or grilling.

Electrolux Design Lab 2014 with the theme Creating Healthy Homes

This 2014 marks Electrolux Design Lab’s 12th year. Electrolux is inviting budding design students from all over the world to join Design Lab 2014, their annual design competition with the theme "Creating Healthy Homes", which aims to promote healthy and sustainable lifestyles to millions of people.

Imagine this: You had an exhausting day at school and you can’t wait to get home and rest. On your way home, the weather was unpredictable and the pollution in the streets was horrible. As you enter your room, you realize that it is not as spotless as you hoped it was. You come in to the kitchen to find good food, but you find nothing on the dining table. You had a draining day and the last thing you would want to do is take care of the household chores.

As you let out a weary sigh, you realize that your home appliances can take care of all these. You see the MAB cleaner scanning your house and deploying its flying mini-robots to the areas in need of cleaning. Meanwhile, an Atonium 3D Food Printer has determined your nutritional needs and is working on a healthy meal for you. At the same time, the Breathing Wall started to purify the air while recreating an environment that will help you relive a happy memory. Imagine this futuristic scenario made possible by you.

This advanced home is the brainchild of the top three winners at last year’s Electrolux Design Lab competition.

This year, Electrolux, a global leader in household appliances, partnered with the University of the Philippines-Diliman, De La Salle-College of St. Benilde, and University of the East-Caloocan to give design students a chance to create a thoughtful, modern home for the rest of the world to enjoy.

Design students around the globe are invited to submit innovative ideas for the future household for a chance to win € 5,000 and a six-month paid internship at an Electrolux Global Design Center.

On its 12th year, Electrolux Design Lab continues to pave the way for future visions of urban household lifestyles, with the theme Creating Healthy Homes. The competition seeks ideas for products, accessories, consumables and services for three focus areas: Culinary Enjoyment, Fabric Care and Air Purification. Through the Design Lab competition, Electrolux sees a creative and sustainable future that projects a healthy well-being and pleasant environment for everyone to live in.

Leading home appliance brand Electrolux introduces its new set of digital brand ambassadors to represent the latest Electrolux campaign, Wear Your Passion.

Celebrity mom Cheska Garcia-Kramer, celebrity chef Rosebud Benitez-Velasco, and mompreneur Janice Villanueva were chosen to be part of the new Electrolux campaign. “Their passion for their craft and credibility in their respective fields made them the perfect choice for Electrolux,” says Andrea Pionilla, Marketing Manager, Electrolux Philippines, Inc.

“The clothes we wear reflect the different hats we put on each day, but taking care of our clothes consume so much of our time and effort. With the help of the new Time Manager Washing Machine, you’ll have more time for your passions without worrying about your laundry,” says Pionilla. She adds, “Through the Electrolux Wear Your Passion campaign, we want to encourage every woman to make time for themselves and to pursue and flaunt their passions through the clothes that best represent them.”

“Being a mom is my ultimate passion in life. My family will always be my first priority,” says Cheska Garcia-Kramer. Having been in the entertainment industry for years, Cheska definitely knows how to balance work and family life. Despite her busy schedule, Cheska is a hands-on mom to her three lovely children, Kendra, Scarlet, and Gavin and a caring wife to PBA player , Doug Kramer.

Chef Rosebud Benitez-Velasco is very passionate about food and cooking. She spends most of her time in the kitchen creating delicious dishes but still makes sure to spend quality time with her children and husband. “Nothing is more rewarding than doing what I love most–being a chef, mother, and wife at home,” shares Chef Rosebud.

Janice Crisostomo-Villanueva joins Chef Rosebud and Cheska in the Wear Your Passion campaign. Janice is not only a entrepreneur but is also a passionate advocate of active parenting and breast-feeding. Janice is the founder of Mommy Mundo, an online portal of family-focused resources comprised of an active community of over 30,000 moms. Janice shares, “Sharing my passions with other moms and helping them in their roles in the family is what I love most about my job.”

“Our digital brand ambassadors will not only share what they are passionate about but also encourage everyone to have guilt-free time doing the things that they love to do with the help of Electrolux home appliances,” adds Pionilla.
