World Vision Inks Partnerships with Corporate Donors to Support Children’s Programs

World Vision Philippines together with several corporations continues to help thousands of Filipino children in need through partnerships aimed to support the organization’s child-focused projects in the Philippines.

In line with the back-to-school season, World Vision and Procter & Gamble (P&G) Philippines launched the “Pag-asa sa Basura” campaign, a sustainable waste collection and recycling system targeting several areas in Metro Manila. The pilot implementation of the project will be done in 25 schools in Malabon and Quezon City.

The participating schools will be outfitted with school-based materials recovery facilities (MRF) for various solid waste materials including sachet packaging. The students who will be participating in the campaign are encouraged to bring a certain number of sachets to receive incentives such as school supplies. Furthermore, the profits that will be collected from the MRF will be used for Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WaSH) programs like improvements in their handwashing facilities and WaSH education.

This initiative will not only be benefiting the children but also saving the environment with the goal of preventing at least one million pieces of sachets going to the ocean. Educators and students will also be trained on the principles of solid waste management specifically recycling.

Earlier this month, World Vision together with Elev8 Media Inc., an out-of-home advertising company, signed an agreement to support the NGO’s (non-government organization) awareness drive for child sponsorship. Elev8 Media Inc. donated 90 lamp post banners in key areas of Makati City, Taguig City and Paranaque City featuring photos and testimonials from former sponsored children and donors of World Vision.

The partnership aims to increase public awareness about World Vision’s Child Sponsorship Program, an initiative where donors commit to give monthly sponsorship to provide the basic needs of a child supported by World Vision.

Another partnership forged by World Vision is with Domescape, a private glamping vacation home in Nasugbu, Batangas. They recently conducted the “A Star of Something Good”, a stargazing event for the benefit of World Vision.

Domescape's willingness to support the children thru World Vision and the owners’ generosity as seen during the launch resulted to one child being sponsored by the corporate partner and two sponsorship pledges from the guests who attended the event. They look forward to doing more of these events that will help increase awareness and move people to support for World Vision’s children’s programs.

”World Vision Philippines is so blessed with the success of all of our initiatives with our partners and on behalf of our organization, I would like to thank them for their unwavering support to our advocacy. Let’s continue to work together for the Filipino children,” said World Vision Philippines Executive Director Rommel Fuerte.

Our Lady of Fatima University Rises in the South with New Laguna Campus

OLFU enters another milestone after 50 years of quality education

Breaking ground for another milestone. Together with the University Chaplain, OLFU executives set a time capsule in the four-hectare Macabling property in Santa Rosa, Laguna, for the groundbreaking of a new campus.

From left: Yvonne S. Guevara, Chairman of the Board of Trustees; Enrico O. Santos, Member of the Board of Trustees; Don August O. Santos, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer; Fr. Lito Caliwag, University Chaplain; Dr. Caroline Marian S. Enriquez, University President; Dr. Mylene S. Abad Santos, Vice President for Student Affairs; and Robert Bjorn O. Santos, Alumni Affairs Director.

Our Lady of Fatima University (OLFU) takes its first foray to the south following 50 years of providing quality education in and around Metro Manila as well as Central Luzon with the groundbreaking of a sixth campus set to rise in Santa Rosa, Laguna.

“When we open a campus, the first and foremost that we have in mind are the students coming in,” said Don August O. Santos, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of OLFU. “With any person who goes through Fatima, and graduates with a degree from Fatima, there’s a sense of achievement that we were able to mold that person to the best that he or she could be.”

The new campus is set on a spacious four-hectare property in Macabling and will initially house a five-story building complete with school facilities and amenities for holistic student learning. Like in OLFU’s other locations, the Laguna campus will offer business courses together with the university’s trademark healthcare programs to meet the demands of the Santa Rosa community.

“We’ll offer both medical and business programs so we are able to address current needs. If there’s a strong calling for business programs, we’ll include them in our offerings,” OLFU President Dr. Caroline Marian S. Enriquez said. “Because we are known for our medical programs, we’ll include those as well. We’re delivering the best for each program.”

A nod to heritage, this milestone reflects a return to the humble beginnings of one of OLFU’s founders, Professor Jose Olivares. In 1967, Professor Olivares founded a 25-bed general hospital in Valenzuela City to convince his son-in-law, Dr. Vicente Santos, to cancel migration plans to the United States. Soon the hospital grew to a nursing training center in 1973 and then to a medical college in 1979. Further expansion led to a second campus as well as a more diversified academic program in the 1990s. In 2002, Our Lady of Fatima College was granted university status by the Commission on Higher Education.

“It’s like coming full circle. When we were kids, we would go to the Olivares ancestral house in Santa Cruz, Laguna, and we would always pass along this path (the new campus site),” Santos said. Santos and Dr. Enriquez are among Professor Olivares’ seven grandchildren who are part of the university leadership.

“We thought it would be a good idea to come back to where we came from. Our roots are from Laguna,” Dr. Enriquez explained regarding why the university chose Santa Rosa for its latest campus.

The Laguna campus adds to Our Lady of Fatima University’s roster of educational institutions located in Valenzuela City, Quezon City, Antipolo City, City of San Fernando (Pampanga), and Cabanatuan City (Nueva Ecija). The university offers several courses including Hotel and Restaurant Management, Information Technology, Accounting, Education, Civil Engineering, Criminology, Psychology, and Maritime Education, as well as its heritage healthcare programs, namely Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Physical Therapy, Medical Laboratory Science, and Dentistry. OLFU is currently home to about 45,000 students across all campuses.

STI opens August Batch for college freshmen

Manila, Philippines – Committed to providing students with relevant education and world-class opportunities, STI College opens its doors for a new batch of incoming college freshmen in August this school year.

While the majority of colleges and universities in the Philippines follow the June to March academic calendar, “STI will open classes in August to match pace with educational institutions internationally and better prepare our students for opportunities here and abroad,” said Peter K. Fernandez, President and COO of STI Education Services Group, Inc.

He also noted that many distinguished state universities and colleges have already shifted their semester intake in an effort to internationalize the institutions. According to the 2016-2017 data of the Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges, thirty four universities and colleges had already adopted the August to May calendar.

This initiative further supports the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) integration whose vision is ‘to narrow the development gaps, to prepare youth for regional leadership, and to increase the competitiveness of the people.’

As one of the last two countries in the ASEAN region with a predominantly June-March academic calendar (the other one being Thailand), the main advantage for students enrolling in the August semester is the opportunity to qualify for student exchange and research programs abroad. Their qualifications will also be recognized by foreign countries, expanding their reach to more global opportunities.

The new batch intake will also pave the way for more collaborations and partnerships with foreign institutions. Subject to the need of the students, this can eventually lead to new programs, specializing on knowledge formation and skills enhancement.

Extending time to prepare

With the new option of enrolling at a later date, STI provides a longer period for students to prepare for higher education mentally and financially. Most senior high school graduates are often pressured to decide on their course and school of choice right after graduation.

Students can take advantage of the extra time to pursue their interests and passion to help them decide on their higher studies, and further evaluate more options to pursue a certain program. STI understands the importance of making the right choice for college as it upholds that passion is essential to succeed in life.

Along with this, families who are financially challenged to send their children to school can prepare for the financial requirements with the opening of the new batch for incoming college freshmen in August.

Less class suspensions

STI further recognizes how environmental factors can potentially impact the learning experience of its students. By adjusting the semester schedule, the effects of the rainy season which begins in the month of June is mitigated.

The traditional academic calendar starts in the month of June, which is regularly affected by heavy rainfalls that lead to class suspensions. These cancellations often cause a delay in curriculum delivery and execution of school programs.

Cancellation of classes breaks the momentum especially when caused by bad weather. Research shows that weather is also linked to school performance, as lack of exposure to sunlight affects hormones in a way that increases the urge to sleep.

The adjustment of the schedule with the implementation of August to May school calendar will cover fewer months of the rainy season, reducing cancellation of classes due to tropical cyclones.

True to its promise of delivering quality education, STI constantly innovates to better prepare its students for opportunities locally and abroad. STI takes pride in its modern and superior facilities, highly qualified professors, and new advancements that further improve the learning experience of its students. With the new academic scheme, STI takes a leap in internationalizing the institution to keep up and align with the rest of the world.

Kick-start the Learning Experience with Licealiz

Back-to-school season is finally here. While it’s time to say goodbye to beach trips and playdates under the sun, there is no need to say adiĂłs to clean, lice-free hair. Although it is a challenge for mommies, children could still maintain good hair hygiene despite spending most of their time with classmates and friends.

Lamoiyan Corporation’s Licealiz Head Lice Treatment Shampoo recently addressed this challenge and provided an easy solution for concerned mothers through its Kick-starting the Learning Experience workshop. Through this learning session, moms and daughters were given a fun bonding experience while at the same time picking up tips on how to keep those tresses flawless and expressing their personality and creativity.

There was a lecture on basic hair care, including ways on preventing head lice infestation, to teach the mothers on how to prepare well for the school season, especially in ensuring that their child’s health remains uncompromised by threats such as pediculosis or head lice infestation.

For school girls, fashionable hairstyles are the definite hype which is why there was a hairstyle tutorial that instructed mommies how to style preppy, easy-to-do hairstyles that their kids can pull off at school.

To ensure that the day was one that both the moms and kids enjoyed, they were also treated to an educational tour at The Mind Museum to feed the kids with new learnings and experiences.

Licealiz Head Lice Treatment Shampoo, an affordable, non-toxic formula that is clinically-proven to kill lice and nits, hopes to not only help mothers maintain their children’s head lice-free, but to also provide the children with the opportunity to satisfy their thirst for learning.

EQuilibrium Leads to Success. Heart balances Smart

Last year, an 11-year-old boy made headlines in the UK when he scored 162 in a MENSA IQ test. According to a number of news outlets, he outscored the late theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking, and even Albert Einstein himself.

Such scores are indicative of a child’s capability to understand and learn advanced concepts; a measure of what we would call “genius”. However, being a genius is just half of the equation. Ideally, a high Intelligence Quotient (IQ) needs to be complemented with Emotional Intelligence, or as it’s more popularly known, Emotional Quotient (EQ).

“Academically speaking, the ability to retain and apply information can be tested and tracked through schoolwork, but grades are only one aspect of a student’s development,” noted Sandy Arellano, who has a Masters Degree in Education and is passionate about integrated learning. “Students need real-life social skills that are adaptable and constructive, and will allow them to use their knowledge in a big-picture manner to benefit others,” she added.

EQ, in a nutshell, is a person’s ability to recognize their emotions, whether of others or their own, and how it affects themselves and others. Arellano, who is also the principal of the Montessori De San Juan school (MDS), further added that “combining IQ with EQ will create a very well-rounded individual. Character building must go hand-in-hand with intellectual growth.”

Individuals with high EQ are more sensitive to how others feel (either as individuals or within a group setting), better at regulating their behavior, and work better within a team. While these skills are undoubtedly useful in daily social interactions, they can also be used to improve critical thinking, systems thinking/learning, and public engagement skills.

Accordingly, schools like MDS offer EQ-centric short course such as personality development, etiquette, problem solving and decision making, and communications to students. Those who need more focused instruction, especially professionals, may also improve their EQ and systems thinking knowledge with courses on business writing, effective presentations, and basic leadership.

For more information on the EQ and Systems Learning courses in Montessori De San Juan, you may contact 725-6306 or 239-1102, or visit http://montessoridesanjuan.com.ph
