Citizen journalism right at users’ fingertips with BMPM in ABS-CBN NEWS APPS

Filipinos are again called upon to be vigilant and to serve as citizen journalists for the coming 2013 polls by reporting election-related anomalies using the Bayan Mo, iPatrol Mo: Tayo Na (BMPM) reporting mechanism in ABS-CBN News’ apps.

It’s citizen journalism right at users’ fingertips through the abs-cbnNEWS.com and COMELEC Halalan 2013 mobile applications, which can be downloaded to iPhones, iPads, and Android smartphones and tablets.

This is the latest digital innovation of ABS-CBN’s award-winning and pioneering citizen journalism movement that started in 2005 and enabled ordinary people to patrol their votes and report wrongdoing in their localities. It was via phone calls and text message in the beginning and later through emails, Facebook, and Twitter.

As the country prepares for the forthcoming midterm elections, the BMPM feature in ABS-CBN News’ mobile apps make it easy and convenient for digital citizens to serve as watchdogs of society and to look out for possible election-related violations such as posting of campaign materials on unauthorized areas, vote buying, and carrying or use of firearms by private individuals while the gun ban is in effect.

In recent elections, BMPM has helped tell some of the biggest news stories such as the Maguindanao Massacre on November 2009, when the first photo from the crime scene was sent to BMPM only minutes after the gruesome crime occurred.

In 2007, it was through BMPM that the nation learned about the burning of a poll precinct in Batangas, which claimed the lives of two teachers.
The trailblazing BMPM, which had stood for “BotoMo, iPatrol Mo” in previous elections, has brought home various awards from prestigious international and local award-giving bodies as the International Gold Quill Awards, Asia Pacific PR Awards, the Philippine Quill Awards, the Anvil Awards, and the Tambuli Awards.
Download the abs-cbnNEWS.com and the COMELEC Halalan 2013 apps on your smartphones and other mobile devices to report to BMPM.
Reports may also be made by calling 412-3781, by posting on Twitter via @bayanmo, or on  Facebook viawww.facebook.com/bayanmoipatrolmo.akoangsimula, and by emailing  ireport@abs-cbn.com.

Things have been so good for the Tri-kada as they have been receiving awards and recognition in the past years. The UNTV family has another reason to celebrate as Bread n’ Butter won its second, yes its second Best Livelihood-Oriented Program Gandingan ng Kabuhayan award at the recently held 7th Gandingan Awards.
The Gandingan awards are a yearly event hosted by the UP Community Broadcasters Society of the University of the Philippines Los Baños, Laguna. The UP students were tasked to carefully select and vote for the winners. It pays tribute to the excellent works of broadcasters, programs and related materials in the country. Mr. Rodel Flordeliz one of the host of the show Bread n’ Butter, personally received the coveted award and thanked the UP students for voting and choosing the program:
Alam ko yung pagpili nila rito talagang pinanood ng mga estudyante tsaka dumaan sya sa voting, so masasabi ko na talagang valid yung magwawagi sa parangal na ito kaya maraming maraming salamat sa tumangkilik, sa lahat ng mga bumoto at syempre sa mga estudante ng UPLB, – Rodel Flordeliz, Executive Producer and Bread n’ Butter Program Host.

It wasn’t a real surprise especially for regular viewers as the show consistently produces quality content features with such technical clarity worthy of awards of the highest degree. Such praises and accolades are only reserved for top-notch shows in which Bread n’ Butter easily qualifies.

One Billion Rising will be on February 14 !

On February 14, 2013, one billion women from different countries will Strike, Dance, and Rise as part of a global effort to free women from all forms of oppression.

Eve Ensler, the Tony-award winning playwright of The Vagina Monologues, who spearheaded the campaign, shares that One Billion Rising was inspired by her time in the Congo where women who have been through the worst were channelling their pain into dance.

“They turn it, they transform it into this strength and I just thought, ‘Oh my God, what if we got a billion survivors on the planet—all of these women who have survived violence—to dance and transform their pain on the same day, you know?’ And it’s happening!” she shares.

“We’ve had so many One Billion Rising launches around the Philippines: Negros, Dumaguete, Bicol, Baguio, Cordilleras, Davao, Iloilo, Cebu—it’s really all over the Philippines and in so many schools they’ve had their launches, so the response has really been overwhelming which kind of just tells me na talagang siguro hinihintay talaga ng tao ang opportunityna ito (... so the response has really been overwhelming which kind of just tells me that maybe the people have really been waiting for this opportunity.)
Here in the Philippines, women from near and far have started learning the One Billion Rising song and dance by heart thanks to the efforts of Gabriela, The New Voice Company, Gabriela Women's Party and other women's groups. Stage actress Monique Wilson, one of the driving forces in the One Billion Campaign, says that the response has been astounding.

I think we heard it then earlier as Eve said that dance is really, can be a collective action. Everybody can move if you just allow your bodies to move, you don’t even have to move so well, you just have to listen to your body and listen to its rhythm. And to also break free from, because you know oppression and silence and pain restricts your body diba, if you notice, it goes like this, instead of it being free. So I think dance is really, not just a form of protest, but it’s a form of celebration really, to celebrate and honor women. -  Monique Wilson

On February 14, 2013, Valentine’s Day, thousands of women and men in factories, schools, farms, market places and communities all over the country will be mobilized. In Quezon City, Tomas Morato is set to be the stage.

“Dance is like prayer, it’s like all the great forms of meditation. It’s sexy, it’s daring. I hope you dance with all your spirit on February 14.” Eve said
