Samsonite introduces Curv® Technology

Samsonite formally introduces Curv Technology last Tuesday, May 7, 2013 in the Firelite Collection launch held at the Manila Peninsula Hotel, Makati City.

Extra light and strong - Revolutionizing the ease in travel and transforming how a luggage is crafted Samsonite formally introduces Curv® Technology. Making travel easier is an ongoing mission at Samsonite and now they introduce this breakthrough as Curv® Technology allows a luggage to be made unbelievably light yet exceptionally strong as evidenced in their 3 Collections:
Cosmolite; Cubelite and the recently released Firelite.

The Curv® Brought to Life.

Curv® is a revolutionary concept in thermoplastic materials that bridges the gap between commodity plastics and traditional fibre-reinforced materials. Curv® is ‘self reinforced’ because it comprises high performance thermoplastic fibres in a matrix of exactly the same material. It is 100% polypropylene, but yields stiffness and strength values around 5 times those of others. In addition, Curv® has a high strain to failure which in combination with good tensile strength offers tremendously high impact resistance, even at temperatures as low as -189 degrees Celsius! These specific material characteristics, combined with its low density allow for very significant weight savings in final products.

"Curv® is nothing less than a revolution for our market", says Arno de Taeye, Vice President Customer Services Europe and Global Supply Hardside. "It is a magnificent new material for all those applications where impact resistance and lightweight play a key role." Another advantage of the material lies in its attractive optical appearance and the extensive design possibilities.''

The heart of the CURV® patented technology is called ‘selective melting’, where highly drawn fibers are submitted to carefully controlled temperature and pressure conditions so that a thin layer from the skin of each individual fiber is melted, then recrystallised to form a matrix. Most importantly, a very high proportion of the original fibre properties are maintained in the 100% polypropylene sheet, which shows stiffness and strength more commonly associated with traditional fibre-reinforced composites, but has the added benefit of exceptionally high resistance to impact (surprisingly maintained down to cryogenic temperatures).

The Strong & Light Cosmolite.

Winner of the Red Dot Design Award 'Best of the Best 2010’ and the Henry Van De Velde Label 2009, Cosmolite is the innovative result of what seems an impossible challenge –to make a stylish suitcase that combines Samsonite’s unrivalled strength and style with unbelievable lightness. Cosmolite is one of Samsonite’s first luggage collections to feature the exclusive and phenomenal Curv® technology Cosmolite’s specially moulded shell design, inspired by a seashell, is not only strikingly elegant but also acts as a protecting cocoon for a traveller’s treasured possessions. The inventive raised ridges ensure unparalleled strength and remove the need for a thicker and therefore heavier outer layer whilst minimizing the risk of scratches.

The Ultra-Sleek Cubelite.

Up to twice as light as other leading polycarbonate suitcases, Samsonite Black Label Cubelite pampers sophisticated travelers with extreme durability and supreme lightweight. It is thoughtfully crafted with a ‘palladium’ finish shell, exhibiting a gleam of sophistication which is the trademark of Samsonite Black Label. Its ridges design adds strength and minimizes surface contact, hence a low scratch sensitivity. With a highly organized packing system, the Samsonite Black Label Cubelite includes cross straps within the luggage cleverly securing all personal belongings, and a zipper lining made of lightweight Nylon. A separate pocket attached to the luggage interior also ensures swift access to personal accessories and other holiday essentials efficiently. For ultimate comfort and maneuverability, the double tube handle makes it seamless for busy globetrotters while its four wheel hub guarantees maximum stability and effortless rolling. It also proves to be an ultimate travel companion armed with its recessed integrated TSA combination lock and matching palladium zippers.

Pushing Travel Boundaries: Firelite

Coveted by active and vibrant travelers – whether they are discovering Antarctica or diving in the Red Sea –Firelite accompanies their active, fast-paced holidays, filled with adrenaline fuelled activities. The unique, striking design and innovative Curv® material enables a strong and even lighter suitcase; the cabin-size spinner 55 weighs less than a large bottle of water (1.9 kg) and the spinner 76 weighs just 2.9 kg, which helps to avoid excess baggage fees with room to pack that extra wetsuit. Inspired by extreme sports lifestyles, the Firelite shell is eye-catching, modern and effortlessly absorbs heavy shocks during travel. Convenient and comfortable integrated top and side handles blend seamlessly into the lines of the case and the water resistant PU coated zipper adds a sporty look. Silent lightweight wheels, for perfect smooth rolling, are activated with a retractable lightweight pull handle whilst a combination lock accepted by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) allows for additional security when travelling. Meanwhile, a functional interior with colorful details, including a fully lined zipped divider pad in the top compartment with cross ribbons and a pocket on the bottom, provides organized and comfortable packing.

One Life, Long Dream: 10 Filipino lads uplift communities through basketball

Ten Youth rise from 50 VisMin hopefuls as basketball legends culminate Alaxan FR National Galing Mo! Camp (L-R) 1st Row: L-R Ronnie Magsanoc, Benjie Paras, Alvin Patrimonio, Jerry Codinera, and Johnny Abarrientos 2nd Row: Top 10 Winners of Alaxan FR Galing Mo Natonal Camp! L-R John Ballentes, Tyke Bano, Gabriel Dagangon. Dan Audris Lagbas, Carl Soreno, MVP Rhys Jefferson Flores, Rhodelle Nagac, Miguel Plata, Michael Kent Salado,  Josuel Macarines

Hard work paid off for a group of young, aspiring cagers from the Visayas and Mindanao after making heads turn during the Alaxan FR Galing Mo Camp held at the Unilab gymnasium in Mandaluyong City, Metro Manila.

John Ballentes and Tyke Bano of Iloilo; Carl Soreno and Josuel Macarines of Dumaguete; Gabriel Dagangon and Miguel Plata of Davao; and Dan Audris Lagbas, Rhodelle Nagac, Michael Kent Salado, and Rhys Jefferson Flores (MVP) of Cagayan De Oro bested 40 other representatives in the three-day basketball camp through their dazzling display of heart and athleticism.

The young cagers were each awarded a P100,000 infrastructure project for their respective barangays, on top of a P20,000 cash incentive. Their stellar performance got the nod of the camp directors, led by no less than basketball legends Alvin Patrimonio, Jerry Codiñera, Benjie Paras, Jojo Lastimosa, Johnny Abarrientos, and Ronnie Magsanoc.

This is really a tradition of hard work and dedication. Last year, the same basketball legends inaugurated the Courts of Inspiration, which are volunteer-built basketball courts made by the local volunteers from the partner villages in Iloilo, Bacolod, Dumaguete, Tacloban, and Cebu for the Visayas, and Cagayan de Oro, Iligan, Butuan, Davao, and Saranggani for Mindanao. Their aim was to inspire communities to achieve greatness through hard work, after building a basketball court entirely on their own. The legends themselves even left handprints on special concrete markers within the structure, reminding people of what hard work and dedication can bring to a community that works together for a noble cause.

The same hoop icons returned to the partner communities early this year to continue the advocacy—not to build more sports venues, but to see how hard the youth have worked to improve their basketball skills on the Courts of Inspiration. After conducting basketball clinics, the legends handpicked the best players, who then flew to Manila to represent their communities in the national leg of the Alaxan FR Galing Mo Camp.

The aim, this time, was to reward those who trained hard in the Courts of Inspiration to perfect their basketball skills.

Rhys Jefferson Flores of Cagayan de Oro was named as the Most Valuable Player
After winning the tight competition, the winners are now set to return the favor to the communities that hand-built their hometown basketball courts.

“My friends and I plan to help promote the game of basketball further by improving the basketball courts back in our province,” said MVP Rhys Jefferson Flores, who bared his plan to add roofing and proper lighting to existing playing venues.

“What I learned from this experience is something that I will remember from this day forward: always give your 100% not just to improve your character but, more importantly, to help others make their lives better.”

Philips launches LED Promise campaign “The Promise of a Greener World”

Philips guarantees consumers that its LED lighting products offer long lasting and consistent brightness, savings on energy and cost, and guaranteed safety. Partnership with photography club ties Philips efforts in sustainability with environmental awareness.

I enjoyed the wonderful world of Philips. Last Saturday, May 4, 2013, Philips Lighting Philippines kicked off its LED campaign  at the SM Mall of Asia.

Entitled “The Promise of a Greener World”, the campaign emphasized how using LED lighting solutions can help reduce the Philippines’ carbon footprint, and avert the drastic effects of global warming.
The event was hosted by popular TV host Suzi Entrata-Abrera, featured Philips’ latest range of LED lighting products, together with its newest Brand Ambassador, popular TV personality and triathlete Kim Atienza.

Philips Country Manager and General Manager for Lighting Fabia Tetteroo-Bueno said that  Philips LED lighting solutions are not only energy-efficient but also provide a superior quality of light. With this campaign, we hope to share with consumers the facts about LED lighting solutions and encourage them to make the simple switch to sustainable lighting solutions that is environmentally-friendly.”

“Philips Lighting is a strong advocate in environmental sustainability with our commitment to green manufacturing and solutions. That is why we decided to work with Kuya Kim to help spread the sustainability message as he is a strong advocate to make the planet a better place for current and future generations,” he added.

Philips also had an environment-themed photo exhibit run concurrently with its LED product launch, which featured the images captured by the finalists of an online contest that Philips conducted in partnership with the Young Photographers Club (YOPHO).

“Our group is honored to have been chosen by Philips as a partner for this noble initiative. We hope that we were able to underscore the importance of preserving the environment through our photos, and encourage everyone to do their share in conserving our resources,” stated YOPHO president Daniel Formoso.

The World Wide Fund for Nature Philippines (WWF Philippines) also supported Philips in its LED campaign. “For three years, Philips has been supporting Earth Hour and our various energy efficiency initiatives. This new LED campaign helps Pinoys go beyond the hour to save the planet, one LED bulb at a time,” said Jose Ma. Lorenzo Tan, WWF Philippines Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer.

Recognized as a world leader in lighting, Philips strives to educate consumers on the ideal characteristics they should look for in good quality LED lighting products.

“Aside from making consumers aware of the many benefits they can get from using LED lighting solutions, we want them to understand that they need to choose good quality LED lighting products to maximize the product’s potential,” said Tetteroo-Bueno.

Philips listed down three key items that good LED lighting products must possess:
- long lasting and consistent brightness
- savings on energy and cost
- guaranteed safety
In addition, Philips LED lighting solutions are at mainstream prices, to help make the shift from traditional bulbs to LED lights much easier.

Philips will be holding LED fairs in key malls across the Philippines, in order to bring the importance and benefits of using LED lighting solutions closer to consumers.

Warner Music Philippines release debut album of ZENDEE titled “I BELIEVE”

Warner Music Philippines proudly releases the debut album of ZENDEE titled “I BELIEVE.” I attended the launching of Zendee's CD album with the media held at Chef & Brewer Cafe and Restaurant, Ortigas Center last April 30, 2013.

Zendee Rose Japitana Tenerefe, became known as “Random Girl,” “Mystery Karaoke Girl,” “Viral Diva,” and “Supermarket Superstar,” was captured on videowhen she was practicing session in SM Megamall, singing Jennifer Holliday’s “And I Am Telling You” by a passerby (Yuan Juan or youngjay0918), who happened to be a video blogger. The video, posted on July 28 on YouTube with the title “Random Girl,” quickly went viral, garnering over 2 million hits, 14,063 likes and more than 5,000 comments.

Beforehand, Zendee got her first big break when she was brought to Manila to participate in the ABS-CBN talent show X-Factor Philippines, which began on June 23, 2012. Unfortunately, she did not make it past boot camp tryouts; her friend, KZ Tandingan, went on to win. The intrepid Zendee elected to stay in Manila to try out for other singing competitions, including Pinoy Dream Academy Season 3 and Pilipinas Got Talent Season 4, both by ABS-CBN. Again, she didn’t make the final cut.

This astounding video brought her to the attention of Warner Music Philippines, which offered her a recording contract on their 1st visit to their makeshift home in the Fire Station. Zendee also caught the interest of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, where she was regarded as “the next big thing.” The Ellen camp contacted her in August, and together with Warner Music, flew her to Los Angeles for taping.

Her debut on the international stage, a performance of “And I Am Telling You” on Ellen, aired on Oct. 26, 2012. During the show, DeGeneres gave Zendee an iPad 3 made to look like a miniature portable videoke machine, “filled with all the songs” that the singer loved.

Currently recording with Warner Music Philippines, Zendee keeps herself busy with frequent guestings on Party Pilipinas, Manny Many Prizes, to name a few. She will perform as the special guest artist of Jason Mraz on his concert on May 14 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Her album ‘I believe’ is out now and is available at major record bars and on iTunes.

The nine-track album features six original compositions and three cover songs. The complete titles, composers, theme and concept of the songs are as follows:

“ Runaway ” is an upbeat, getting over / moving on love song with a current/new sound written by US-based songwriters and world-class composers Andrew Fromm, Matt Bronleewe, Jordan Pruitt, & Tyler Hayes.

“ The Ones You Love ” - a love song about heartache and “ Completely ” - a ‘couples song’ were both written by Diane Eve Warren. Dianne is a US-based songwriter highly regarded worldwide as a hit maker with hundreds of hit songs under her belt.

“ I Believe ” - an inspirational love song with only the piano and vocals and “ If You Want ” - the only love song in the album that has only a ukulele and vocals as accompaniment. This was written by Lamberto Reyes Jr. who also composed songs for other Warner Music artists.

“ Go The Distance ”
is an inspirational song which best exemplifies the journey of Zendee and at the same time showcasing her vocal prowess. Written by Alan Menken, David Joel Zippel.

“ Hallelujah ” written by Leonard Cohen, is an ‘arena’ inspired sound which focus on Zendee’s vocal prowess.

“ Love Takes Time ” written by Mariah Carey and Ben Margulies is Zendee's version of this classic hit.

“ Runaway ” (acoustic) is a stripped-down version of ‘ Runaway. ’

The artistic and production team of Zendee – “I Believe” is composed of Flerry de Leon (Executive Producer), Neil Gregorio (Album Producer; A&R Direction), Dante Tanedo (Chief Recording Engineer), Dan Tanedo, Angee Rozul, & Efren San Pedro (Additional Recording), Dante Tanedo (Song Mixing @ Bellhaus Entertainment Studio); Neil Gregorio (Song Sequence and Mastering), Arnie Mendaros, Moy Ortiz & Neil Gregorio (Vocal Supervision), Niccolo Cosme (Photography), and Ira Cosme (Cover Layout).

A mall tour, special TV guest appearances and radio interviews will also be conducted to prmote the album. Zendee will perform as the special guest artist of Jason Mraz on his concert on May 14 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
