“The Last Mile Photo Exhibition” – A message of hope and solidarity in the face of disasters

Exhibition open for viewing until 30 November

The Last Mile Photo Exhibit is anchored on creating awareness of the impact brought by Typhoon Odette (Rai) one year after it hit the country, and EU’s and humanitarian organizations’ relief efforts and ongoing programs to help rebuild communities.

The Delegation of the European Union to the Philippines and its humanitarian aid partners, together with S Maison and SM, are bringing “The Last Mile” photo exhibition to S Maison, SM Mall of Asia, Pasay City. It was inaugurated on 24 November at S Maison, SM Mall of Asia by H. E. Luc Véron, European Union Ambassador to the Philippines and Mr Hans Sy Jr, President, SM Engineering Design and Development and Ms Millie Dizon Senior VP of Marketing & Communications of SM and EU’s humanitarian aid partners.
Mr. Hans Sy Jr., President of SM Engineering Design and Development; Millie Dizon, SM senior VP of Marketing & Communications, and H.E., Luc Véron, European Union Ambassador to the Philippines during the ribbon cutting ceremony.

The exhibition offers snapshots of the different phases of the EU’s relief and early recovery operations following the passage of typhoon Odette over Surigao Del Norte, Dinagat Islands, Bohol, Southern Leyte, Cebu, Negros Occidental and Palawan, in December 2021.

Highly destructive typhoons and other extreme weather phenomena such as super typhoon Odette are expected to become more frequent due to global warming, as it was made very clear by the scientists and UN and country representatives gathered at the COP27 in Sharm el-Sheikh just a few days ago.

Ambassador Véron said “The Philippines is highly vulnerable to natural disasters such as typhoons, flooding and earthquakes. The exhibition wants to be a message of hope, a reminder of our humanitarian obligation to save lives and help communities recover from natural disasters like Odette.”

In the parlance of humanitarians, the “last mile” is the final stage of the humanitarian relief chain, in which we make sure that we reach those most vulnerable wherever they are.
EU Ambassador Luc Véron, with Erika Geronimo and Rhoda Avila of Oxfam Pilipinas.

The exhibition pays homage of the work of humanitarian workers in providing live-saving assistance in the aftermath of disasters and in helping communities recover. It also highlights the importance of preparedness, which was crucial in limiting the number of fatalities of a super typhoon such as Odette. Lastly, the exhibition is an expression of sympathy towards the victims of Odette and other disasters.

The exhibition features images captured by organizations who implemented the European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (EU-ECHO) emergency response for the survivors of Typhoon Odette: ACCORD, Action Against Hunger, Care Philippines, Humanity & Inclusion, Initiatives for Dialogue and Empowerment through Alternative Legal Services (IDEALS) Inc., National Rural Women’s Coalition, Oxfam Pilipinas, Plan International, Save the Children Philippines, Sentro para sa Ikauunlad ng Katutubong Agham at Teknolohiya (SIKAT) Inc, Community Organizers Multiversity, and United Youth of the Philippines-Women.

The exhibition was first presented in Siargao in August 2022. It will be open for viewing at S Maison, SM Mall of Asia until 30 November 2022.

‘Rule of Two-Thirds Underwater Photo Exhibit’ for marine conservation opens at Solaire

In celebration of World Oceans Day, captivating underwater photos of multi-awarded photographers Anna Varona and Danny Ocampo presents ‘Rule of Two-Thirds Underwater Photo Exhibit’ for marine conservation opens at Solaire.

The exhibit is to highlight the beauty of the Philippine oceans and the urgent need to protect them and also to help the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Philippines in their continuous efforts to conserve Philippine oceans and the communities that greatly depend on them.

WWF-Philippines’ work in protecting the Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park inspired the declaration of a one million hectare of MPA by the Municipal Government of Cagayancillo through a municipal ordinance covering its entire municipal waters and surrounding open sea.

The exhibit showcases a visual spectacle that will allow the public to see the beauty of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) such as the Marine Sanctuary in Tingloy, Batangas, Apo Island in Negros Oriental, Cagayancillo and Tubbataha in Palawan, and Tañon Strait in the Visayas
Anna Varona and Danny Ocampo presents ‘Rule of Two-Thirds Underwater Photo Exhibit

Anna Varona, who is a responsible tourism advocate and a marine warrior on top of being a professional photographer, believes that this endeavor is very much aligned with the 2017 World Oceans Day’s theme ‘Our Ocean, Our Future’ because it aims to spread awareness on the role of MPAs in long-term food security.
“MPAs ensure that our coastal resources are given the chance to regenerate and provide us food now and in the future. Aside from that, our fishermen are given much more stable and sustainable livelihood,” she said.
One of the featured photographs in the Rule of 2/3rd Exhibit.

Danny Ocampo, who also campaigns for ethical and responsible diving and photography, hopes to influence tourists to be more responsible when they visit MPAs, especially since Apo Island has been instrumental in his journey towards marine conservation work.
“Apo Island continues to inspire not only me but hundreds of individuals, organizations and policy makers here and abroad who have been there. Sadly, its popularity is beginning to be its bane and measures have to be taken to ensure that tourism and conservation complement each other,” he stated.

Canon Philippines sponsored the printing of all portraits including the postcard versions of select photos that will be sold to help the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Philippines.

The exhibit, which is supported by the Department of Tourism, is open to the public until June 22, 2017.

Globe-Pusod, Inc. partnership boosts Taal Volcano's ecotourism

Taal’s ecotourism has received a big boost from the partnership between Globe Telecom and the nonprofit environmental organization Pusod Taal Lake Conservation Center (TLCC).

The collaboration of Globe and Pusod Inc. is working together to empower communities around the lake through environment education and sustainable enterprises.

Pusod is an environmental non-profit organization which works with small fisher folk communities in Batangas and Cavite to conserve ecosystems and empower them through environment education and sustainable enterprises.

A member of Taal Volcano Protected Landscape Protected Area Management Board, in 2012, Pusod tapped Globe for the use of ICT to enhance implementation of the Taal Volcano Protected Landscape (TVPL) Management Plan designed to ensure the economic and environmental sustainability of the Taal Lake ecosystem which covers 13 municipalities and 3 cities in Batangas and Cavite.

One of the key programs implemented by Globe and Pusod to address the area’s environmental issues is the promotion of ecotourism which gives a low-impact alternative to commercial tourism. This not only helps protect the environment but also provides livelihood to communities around the lake.

As the result of the partnership,  the Pusod Taal Lake Conservation Center (TLCC) has increased earnings by 1400% from P40,000 upon its establishment in 2011 to P600,000 in 2015. It now provides sustainable livelihood opportunities to the local communities surrounding the Taal Volcano Protected Landscape (TVPL). The earnings came from various sustainable tourism initiatives such as Knowledge Tours, Kayak rentals, and sales from honey, coffee, and vinegar.

Globe creates positive societal impact by fostering connectivity for families, businesses, and the nation, providing jobs across our value chain and by developing partnerships that support sustainable livelihood and conservation as part of our sustainability strategies,” said Fernando Esguerra, Director, Globe Citizenship.

“Lakes take a long time to respond to conservation measures. Those that are still connected deeply with the livelihood that the lake provides are less and less reliant on it. It prompted us to take action because a lot of people really depend on the lake for livelihood. The goals of all protected areas should be sustainable development, preserving the characteristics and the life forms in an ecosystem,” said Atty. Ipat Luna, Executive Trustee and Founding Member of Pusod, Inc.

“The only way we can really save the lake is if they take pride in it: I live in a protected area source of pride,” said Atty. Luna.

A photo exhibit entitled “Pusod: Ang Pagkakaisa ng Pamayanan at Kalikasan”, will give you a glimpse of the Taal community through endearing snapshots of the scenic views of Taal Volcano and Lake, as well as its natural beauty.

Photos of the TAAL Ecosystem  displayed at the Globe Art Gallery from August 3 to 31. Photos were taken by Globe Employee Volunteers (DRMHWS). Proceeds of the exhibit will support Pusod’s conservation work in TVPL.

Together with Globe, our work entails us to work with communities and tell them more about the ecosystem where they are and to eventually help them to protect it and create enterprises around them,” said Ann Hazel Javier, Executive Director, Pusod, Inc.

We started with the eco-tourism program. We have built capacities for the people in the volcano island, the tour guides and the boat guides, our local caterer and the community volunteers. Their main motivation is really to help conserve and protect the ecosystem,” said Javier.

“As an organization, we hope to connect humans to nature and vice versa. Aside from the conservation work, we work a lot with communities and we see the need of the communities to have economic activities so that they can participate in the conservation activities as well,” she added.

Here are Globe-Pusod Inc. Partnership Highlights

Since 2012, Globe:
- Established a monitoring system involving 5,000 fisherfolks of the Kilusan ng Maliliit na Mangingisda ng Lawa ng Taal through the TxtConnect facility for the E-Governance Program. TxtConnect, a web-based platform that enables them to broadcast messages critical to the implementation of the TVPL Management Plan.
- Paved the way for mobile financial services to reach almost fisher folk communities across the 13 municipalities and 3 cities in Batangas and Cavite under the TVPL by distributing 5,000 SIM cards with discounted call and SMS rates.
- Improved productivity of 276 households in Barangay Calawit, Balete, Batangas with the provision of solar lams through the Stiftung Solarenergie collaboration
- Helped provide employment for 131 community-based tour guides, boat operators, horse guides and hospitality practitioners for the Sustainable Tourism Program
- Sparked citizens’ and employees’ participation through the Boat Building Activities and Knowledge Tours
Pusod, Inc. established Taal Lake Conservation Center (TLCC) in Sitio Lipute, Barangay Kinalaglagan, Mataasnakahoy, Batangas which is the central knowledge hub of the TVPL.

It operates the Taal Ecotourism Program which highlights the Taal Knowledge Tour. includes Briefing on the lake region; eruption history of the volcano;  Boat Ride from TLCC to Calauit, Balete on Volcano Island and back; Horse Ride or Trek to the crater view deck with local tour guides; Snacks and lunch of Batangas fusion cuisine and local refreshments; Conservation contribution; Boat Sailing; Kayak and Stand Up Paddle Board.

Articles of Disagreements exhibition at Lopez Museum

Arts, the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.

The Lopez Museum and Library opens its second major exhibition for 2014, Articles of Disagreements, starts September 19, and will run until 20 December 2014.

Guest curated by Lian Ladia and Sidd Perez of Planting Rice, this exhibition features works by guest contemporary artists Tito and Tita (Film Collective), Nilo Ilarde, Buen Calubayan, and Maria Cruz.

Articles of Disagreement is a generative exhibition on art languages that will unearth different forms of art writing/ anecdotes of criticism in Philippine art history, our own historiography, the local art education infrastructure, and how we position ourselves in western critical languages. Though Articles of Disagreements was born out of a specific pool of articles and association towards critical inquiry in the local context, reflexive practices of contemporary artists are also put into focus, as diverse occupations in the Arts and other strategies an archive could take are explored to unburden itself from established institutional forms.

The Articles of Disagreements exhibition focuses on art forms that will unearth the different forms of art writing and anecdotes of criticism in Philippine art history.

Articles of Disagreements was born out of a specific pool of major texts found in the Lopez Library archives and focuses on the reflexive practices of contemporary artists, as diverse occupations in the Arts are explored to unburden itself from established institutional forms.

Featured artists include the collective of young filmmakers Tito and Tita, conceptual artist-curator Nilo Ilarde, Germany-based artist Maria Cruz, and 2013 Ateneo Art Awardee Buen Calubayan. The exhibition will revolve around the archives of the library, along with the museum’s collection of works by Raymundo Albano, Fernando Zobel, Nena Saguil, Roberto Chabet and more; including the ever present masters Juan Luna and Felix Resurreccion Hidalgo.

The exhibition is curated by Sidd Perez and Lian Ladia of the alternative contemporary art platform ‘Planting Rice’.

An interesting feature of the exhibition is the reading laboratory cum coffee shop, named 'Café of Letters,' which aims to elicit discussion and written contributions that will zoom in on the generation of narratives that make up the body of texts of Philippine art history, art criticism, and broad art writing.

Don Eugenio Lopez, Sr, who founded and built the Lopez Museum and Library in order to provide scholars and students access to his personal collection of rare Filipiniana books, manuscripts, maps, archeological artifacts, and fine art.

The museum’s collection includes paintings by 19th century Filipino masters, Juan Luna y Novicio and Felix Resurreccion Hidalgo. Luna and Hidalgo garnered honors for their country when the paintings they submitted to the 1884 Esposicion National de Bellas Artes in Madrid won the Filipino some international recognition in the field of fine arts. Luna’s Spoliarium received one of the three gold medals awarded. Hidalgo’s entry, Las Virgenes Cristianas Expuestas al Populacho, was awarded the first silver out of a total of fifteen that were given out.

If Luna’s canvasses depict drama and a certain bravura, Hidalgo’s portray a delicate sensibility, which a critic has described as “more pure, more serene in feeling”.

You will enjoy The Articles of Disagreements exhibition. Registration fee is P120 (P100 for students and members of the museum’s membership program) and comes with a free admission to the current exhibition.

The Lopez Museum and Library is at the ground floor, Benpres Building, Exchange Road corner Meralco Avenue, Pasig City. Museum days and hours are Mondays to Saturdays, except holidays, 8am to 5pm. For inquiries, call Tina Modrigo at 631-2417.

“Protect the Goal” kicks off in the Philippines

Global football-based HIV prevention campaign headlined by the Philippine football national team, Azkals, targets youth at risk.

Protect the Goal, the football-based HIV prevention campaign will officially be launched on June 22, 2014 during the opening of the LoveYourself Anglo, a new free HIV testing community center along Shaw Boulevard, Ortigas.

Protect the Goal, the football-based HIV prevention campaign that has swept the world with its sports-oriented approach to promoting HIV testing and safer sex behavior, has kicked off in the Philippines.

The campaign ultimately seeks to help lower the risk of HIV transmission among the Filipino youth, specifically among young Filipino men. In the Philippines, 71% of new infections since 1984 were in young people and that two-thirds of high risk young people actually do not know their HIV status.

First launched at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, the campaign has since been replicated in other Southeast Asian countries, and has now been launched in the Philippines led by Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and local partner, the Philippine Football Federation. The campaign also draws multi-sectoral support from partners such as the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV and AIDS (UNAIDS), the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and advocacy group LoveYourself.

Azkals campaign

Protect the Goal hopes to reach out to young Filipino men through football, one of the fastest-growing sports in the country, and through role models they can look up to, professional football players.

“Protect the Goal wants to tap into the convening power of football and the positive influence of the Azkals to promote HIV testing in the Philippines. Football has grown tremendously in the Philippines for the last few years and the AFC sees this as a good opportunity to help promote relevant causes such as HIV prevention,” says Urs Zanitti, regional coordinator for the Protect the Goal campaign in Asia.

“In the Philippines, most of the people who get infected are young men and we feel that many young men look up football players. We hope that through the example of the Azkals, we can encourage young Filipinos to take a more proactive stance in their health, especially in relation to HIV.”

Protect the Goal promotional materials will be visible during Azkals games. These should help encourage young football fans to take the HIV test through free clinics such as the new LoveYourself Anglo community center along Shaw Boulevard near Ortigas, or any other HIV testing centers.

Organizers partnered with LoveYourself to launch the campaign during the opening of the advocacy’s second community center, LoveYourself Anglo, which provides free and confidential HIV testing and counseling services primarily for young Filipino men. A 3-minute walk away from Starmall in Ortigas, LoveYourself Anglo is accessible to young people living in the center of Metro Manila who would want to take an HIV test, and will be serviced by trained volunteer counselors and government-funded medical professionals

Youth at risk

ADB says the Protect the Goal campaign comes at a critical juncture in curbing the rise of HIV/AIDS infection among the youth in the Philippines and the region.

“While today’s generation of young people in the region is generally healthier and better educated than in the past, sexual and reproductive health and HIV are often overlooked aspects of their well-being. Added to this is that HIV/AIDS prevention and control programs often don’t reach young people,” says Dr. Susan Roth, senior social development specialist at ADB.

She says the Protect the Goal campaign will increase awareness among young men on risky behavior that will put them in danger of contracting HIV/AIDS. It will also educate them on prevention and testing options that are available to them.

UNAIDS says that while the world has made great leaps in fighting the spread of HIV, certain countries like the Philippines require special attention due to their alarming rate of new infections.

"Globally, progress has made in reducing the number of new HIV infections, getting people living with HIV on treatment and reducing stigma and discrimination. However, much still has to be done, including for the Philippines, one of nine countries reporting a disturbing trend of over 25% reported new infections since 2009,” says Bali Bagasao, country director at UNAIDS Philippines.

“We welcome the partnership with ADB and PFF to raise HIV awareness, encourage young people in particular to commit to HIV prevention; and to underscore the need to ensure that all people living with HIV who are eligible for life-saving antiretroviral treatment can access it by 2015."

Bagasao says the Philippine campaign is aligned with the Global campaign to ‘Protect the Goal’ launched by UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sdibe to get to zero new HIV infections, zero discrimination, and zero AIDS-related deaths, through the power of football.

“There is something about the sport that brings people together. Football inspires camaraderie and teamwork. Getting a goal through in football is a huge challenge, but it can be done if players work together as a team. This is the same in the HIV prevention campaign. Preventing the spread of HIV is a big challenge, but if we all work together as a team, we can protect the goal of bringing new infections down to zero,” adds Zanitti.

Positive peer influence

The campaign is also hoping to gain traction by tapping into the deep community bonds that form the fabric of Filipino society. Supporters who want to get involved in the campaign can take the HIV test and then use positive peer influence to encourage their friends to do the same.

“Young people influence each other and we hope to influence them through messages delivered by their peers, like the players of the national football team. If we can get them to get tested, we can give them advice on how to protect themselves from getting infected with HIV through the counseling process.”

“If people get tested, they can share their experience with their friends and peers and encourage them to get tested as well,” says Zanitti.

About AFC

AFC is the governing body of football in Asia. AFC and its 47 football associations in Asia care about football but at the same time also AFC wants to use the power of football to contribute to the social development of people. In the Philippines, AFC works with the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) to launch the Protect the Goal campaign and other initiatives.

About ADB

Over the past decade, ADB has invested more than 50 million USD in projects which address the issues of HIV/AIDS in Asia Pacific, with the focus on tackling HIV and AIDS risks and vulnerabilities along economic corridors.

The Government of Sweden provided around 19 million USD through the “Cooperation fund for fighting HIV/AIDS in Asia Pacific” trust fund. The objectives were to produce more data on the extent and nature of HIV/AIDS in Asia Pacific, to support policy dialogue, and fund innovative solutions to promote HIV/AIDS awareness.

ADB co-financed the Protect the Goal campaign in the amount of 250,000 USD, guided the overall implementation strategy, brought together NGOs with the AFC and UNAIDS, and facilitated the partnership.

“Breton Houses” Exhibition of New Juvenal Sanso Works

Sanso's “Breton Houses” Exhibition of New Juvenal Sanso Works runs from July 27 to August 3, 2012 at the  Powerplant.

The oeuvre in the current works of renowned painter and Modernist icon Juvenal Sanso can be seen as a new high point in the artist’s event filled life.
His latest exhibit,"Breton Houses" is a logical emotional progression in Sanso's creative journey which started from the darkness of his Black Periodpaintings, his strong expressionist paintings that arose from the trauma he experienced during the horrors of World War II. It was only starting in the 1960s and not after spending twenty-four of the most meaningful summers in his life (from 1960-1984) at the home of Yves le Dantec and Agnes Roualt in the Brittany seacoast that Sanso, tortured as he had been from the pain of war, learned to calm his soul. From that tranquil period, Sanso moved on to paint another phase in his artistic career, or the period that art historians refer to as the artist's joyous period. Just when the art community thought that Sanso had exhausted his inspiration, a little less than a decade ago, he presented a new series of works and introduced to the world his Moderno series.
Moderno meant a return to his strong modernist roots, In these works, most of them revisiting vistas and landscapes he had seen in the past or places he had traveled to, Sanso gives a refreshing and much vitalized visual interpretation using highly exaggerated colors and compositions. Always succeeding in being several steps ahead even of himself, Sanso never fails to surprise everyone. "Breton Houses" which starts on the 27th of July and runs until the 3rd of August 2012, will have an artist’s reception on the 31st of July, Tuesday, 6:30 P.M. at the Archaeology Wing, 2nd Floor of the Power Plant Mall. He brings his Moderno series to a much higher level, preparing works that, with their stark honesty, bordering almost on the spiritual. "Breton Houses" is presented by Galerie Joaquin, www.galeriejoaquin.com Tel:723-9418 or 723-9253.
The landscapes he creates and presents in "Breton Houses" are not to be viewed as specific paintings of particular houses in Brittany specially since Sanso is now painting mainly from his imagination and memory. "Breton Houses" are thus metaphors for the peace and tranquility he experienced during his stay on the northern coast of France. The landscapes he paints today are part of his search for the idyllic, a soothing balm for the restless and tired spirit not only of artists but of the human psyche. In "Breton Houses", Sanso paints the essence of calmness, painting what every man's dream of the perfect place should be. Sanso re-explores the meaning of warmth and comfort that those twenty-four summers have meant for him, creating works based more on those feelings than any actual location. Thus his new works conform to these emotions – of the idyllic place in one’s mind where one goes to relax – rather than a mere photocopy of an existing landscape. In this way, Sanso remains true to his expressionist ideals—relying on feeling and emotion to guide his steady, gifted hand. The landscapes on display show just how far the artist has come in his practice.
While elements of his earlier works are certainly there – Breton architecture, the affinity towards the coast, the famous Sanso moon – the calm his newer paintings in this series invokes is reminiscent of his experiments in color that stems from the Moderno series. This makes the new entries of the Breton Houses series more nuanced and complex than Sanso’s earlier works. The search for the idyllic is ever present, but Sanso has injected his experiences since into this series. Paradoxically, the series that initiated his rebirth as an artist was itself reawakened.
