James Hardie: Living Without Compromise

Many people, when faced with time or budget constraints, or a decision between old and new ways of doing things, are forced to accept standards that are lower than desirable. Yet there is one aspect in life where there should be no room for compromise: the building of spaces where we live, work, play, and enjoy life to the fullest.

James Hardie—a highly respected, admired innovator and world leader in the building materials industry—espouses elevating standards and prioritizing quality. As a result, its products, especially the HardieFlex brand of durable fiber cement boards, have become the top choice among discerning architects, engineers, contractors, developers, and homeowners since the brand’s introduction to the local market in 1996.

The brand trusted by the experts, James Hardie products, provide durability and design flexibility. And this is enhanced by James Hardie guidelines on how not to compromise when it comes to safety, sustainability and cost-efficiency.

1. Put stock in things that last a long time

Founded in Australia in 1888, the company that pioneered state-of-the-art fiber cement technology in the 1980s has invested much in research and development for its cornerstone Philippines product range, HardieFlex.

Now, the most trusted fiber cement brand by architects in the country, HardieFlex is the go-to material for withstanding the test of time and resisting a host of problems. Unlike plywood, HardieFlex is resistant to moisture damage, fire, termites, rotting, and impact.

This durable product has also been tested on a variety of landscapes and weather conditions. The Philippines, in particular, is a tricky place in which to build homes and buildings, given its varying weather which ranges from hot and humid to cold and wet. HardieFlex® fiber cement products are specifically manufactured to perform superbly in the face of these unique factors affecting Philippine construction. It protects against moisture damage and rotting all year round, for many years to come.

2. Think cost-efficient instead of cheap

When local homeowners economize on construction materials, are they truly saving their money or just compromising on quality? Some materials like wood and plywood may be less expensive initially, but since they’re not as durable, they need to be repaired and replaced more often. Result: they’re more expensive in the long run.

Built to last, HardieFlex® is more pocket-friendly. It can be installed in various applications with minimal labor costs for homeowners. With HardieFlex®, construction can be cost-efficient without skimping on safety and structural integrity.

3. Choose both form and function

There are endless design possibilities with HardieFlex®. Initially marketed and known as material for ceilings and walls, the durable fiber cement boards has expanded its line, offering several applications such as eaves, fascia, flooring, wet areas, and external cladding.

HardieFlex Ceilings, HardieFlex Walls, HardieFlex Wet Area Solution, HardieFlex® Senepa, HardieFlex Eaves, HardiePlank Siding, and HardieFlex Flooring all allow for a wide variety of sizes and applications to fit your design and decorative taste.

4. Go for sustainable and health friendly

Years of experience, research and development, and knowledge from across the globe have made James Hardie products the ideal tool, not only because of their quality and durability. It aims to deliver an ideal and cost-efficient way of building spaces without forgetting two important elements: the people and the environment. With HardieFlex®, James Hardie delivers products that are both health- and eco-friendly.

First, its products are low in volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are chemicals emitted in the air which may be harmful to people and the environment. Secondly, asbestos, a common additive found in other fiber board products, are 100% absent from HardieFlex® products. Research shows that VOCs can cause serious respiratory problems in children and the elderly. Without these harmful compounds threatening to pollute the air people breathe, it is much easier to enjoy life without worry.

HardieFlex® products are also energy-efficient and designed to provide thermal comfort. Moreover, the products use sustainable raw materials and goes through a manufacturing process which minimizes the impact on the environment.

5. Always go the extra mile

Confident of the top-notch quality of its products, James Hardie provides a ten-year warranty on all HardieFlex fiber cement boards. This winner of 3 out of 4 feature awards at the Architects’ Choice Awards Philippines 2014 by BCI Asia, including Most Trusted Brand for cement boards, also comes with excellent after-sales service. The company has dedicated hotlines for customer and technical support (toll-free 1-800-1-888-5427; or (02) 895-5427.

Living life without compromise seems like a very difficult undertaking. But with HardieFlex®, you won’t need to settle for anything but the best.

Power rates down this month

Lower spot market charges and cheaper fuel prices lead to generation charge reduction

OVERALL DECREASE MAY 2015 05.05.15 – May 2015 overall rate decrease infographic

The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) said that overall rates went down by PhP 0.70 per kilowatthour (kWh) this May. Said decrease is due to lower generation costs from all power suppliers of Meralco.

For a typical household consuming 200 kWh, the overall electricity bill will go down by PhP 140. At PhP 9.98 per kWh, this month’s rate is lower by PhP 1.46 compared to May 2014’s PhP 11.44 per kWh.

Lower generation costs from all suppliers

Generation charge decreased by PhP 0.60 per kWh from PhP 5.41 per kWh in April to PhP 4.81 per kWh this month. The reduction was mainly driven by lower charges from the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM) and Independent Power Producers (IPPs), as well as a reduction in the National Power Corporation’s (NPC’s) Generation Rate Adjustment Mechanism (GRAM) collections.

Cost of power obtained from the WESM decreased by PhP 4.19 per kWh due to less occurrences and shorter duration of power plant outages. The Luzon Grid remained on “normal” state throughout the period of the Malampaya shutdown.

Meanwhile, average cost of the Independent Power Producers (IPP) was lower by PhP 0.75 per kWh due to the improved utilization level of the QPPL power plant and cheaper fuel prices obtained by the First Gas plants. The effect of the Malampaya shutdown was moderated by lower prices of condensate and natural gas in the April supply month versus March. Malampaya natural gas underwent its quarterly repricing to reflect the lower cost of fuel. From $10.39 per gigajoule (GJ) the previous period, price of natural gas has been reduced by 19% to $8.44 per GJ.

Average rates of plants under the Power Supply Agreements (PSAs) also decreased this month by PhP 0.06 per kWh. Finally, NPC’s collections of its GRAM similarly went down by PhP 0.06 per kWh.

The share of IPPs, PSAs, and WESM to Meralco’s total power requirements stood at 47, 43, and 10 percent respectively.

Adjustments in other bill components

In addition to the generation charge, taxes and other charges registered reductions of PhP 0.07 and PhP 0.08 per kWh, respectively. These offset a PhP 0.05 per kWh increase in the transmission charge.

Meralco reiterated that it does not earn from the pass-through charges, such as the generation and transmission charges. Payment for the generation charge goes to the power suppliers, while payment for the transmission charge goes to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP). Of the total bill, only the distribution, supply, and metering charges accrue to Meralco.

Meralco’s distribution charge has not registered any adjustment and has remained at the same level for 10 months now or since July 2014.

Meralco supports Electrical Safety Month

Meralco also reminded its customers to observe electrical safety in line with its initiatives to support Electrical Safety Month.

The government has declared the month of May of every year as Electrical Safety Month. Meralco said it fully supports initiatives that raise public awareness and educate electricity consumers on the proper use of electrical appliances and gadgets so as to prevent and avoid electricity-related accidents.

James Hardie is the world leader in fiber cement technology. We have been in the building materials industry since 1888. Our company is founded on new developments and discoveries through our steadfast commitment to research. In the 1980s, we pioneered the development of asbestos-free cement boards. Since then, we have become the highly respected innovator and leader of fiber cement building materials. James Hardie boasts of 127 years of global knowledge and 19 years of local edge. We established our business initially in Australia, then we have expanded to New Zealand, the United States and in 1996, the Philippines. The manufacturing facility in Laguna does not only supply cement boards locally but all throughout the Asia Pacific region straight from our plant in Cabuyao. To add to that, the factory creates sustainable jobs for Filipinos.

Utilizing our global research team and with our experience in the Philippine market, it is apparent that the realities of a tropical country are much different from where we started. Keeping in mind the Philippines' notorious extreme weather swings, James Hardie building products have been designed and developed to withstand the local climate. The high temperature and high pressure treatment we enforce in our cement boards increases the durability of our products and minimizes movement due to temperature variations. From our ceilings, walls and flooring to our senepa, eaves and siding, if it has the HardieFlex® or HardiePlank trademark, it was designed exactly for the needs of the Filipinos.

Based in the Philippines for almost two decades now, it is obvious that plywood and concrete hollow blocks are still being predominantly used in the construction of homes and this often leads to rapid deterioration. Whether it be due to water damage, fire, impact, or termites, houses quickly lose their initial sheen. If you have become a victim of these perennial damages, James Hardie would like to help you. We will prove to you the premium quality of HardieFlex backed by its resistance to moisture damage, fire, termites, and impact.

Amaia Land celebrates 5th year of providing quality homes to more Filipinos

Aiming to help hardworking Filipino families have a house they can call their own, Amaia Land continues making those dreams come true as the company celebrates its 5th year in the industry.

Amaia celebrates its fifth year of providing Filipino families quality yet affordable homes in an event last Feb. 6 at the Acacia Hotel Manila.

Amaia was borne out of the vision of its mother company, Ayala Land (ALI), to broaden its residential product line to cater to the wider Philippine population. In 2010, this came into fruition with the incorporation of Amaia Land and its subsequent launch of the first Amaia Scapes economic housing project, thereby reinforcing ALI’s thrust of “enhancing land, enriching lives for more people.”

The company’s maiden project, Amaia Scapes Laguna established Amaia as a competitive brand in the real estate industry. Amaia’s “Scapes” house-and-lot product line, which now consists of 16 communities, has revolutionized the economic housing segment. Some features that homeowners love about the community are its cluster type development, patio greens and full complement of shared amenities. Meanwhile, housing units are sought after for their attractive facades, modern design and efficient space planning.

In 2011, Amaia launched its condominium product lines: the mid-rise Amaia “Steps” and high-rise Amaia “Skies”. Amaia Steps now boasts a total of nine communities. These homes are ideal for those who aspire for bigger living spaces within city limits. Meanwhile, there are now four Amaia Skies developments, which offer private abodes for urban dwellers and on-the-go working individuals desiring a balanced work-play lifestyle.

Amaia Scapes San Fernando promises a dream home within your reach.

Last year, Amaia introduced Amaia “Series”, a pure townhouse development designed for families with growing need for space, and Amaia “Square”, shophouses made for entrepreneurs who want their home and store in one convenient address.

The village patio of Amaia Scapes San Fernando is where families can do recreational activities.

So far, Amaia has served over 12,000 families across the country. The brand is present in key locations in North Luzon (Bulacan, Pampanga, Tarlac, Urdaneta), Metro Manila (Quezon City, Paranaque, Manila, Caloocan, Pasig, Mandaluyong and soon Las Pinas), South Luzon (Laguna, Cavite, Batangas, Quezon and soon Bicol) and the Visayas (Bacolod, Cebu and soon Iloilo). This year, it will venture to CDO, Mindanao. Homes are made affordable by easy-on-the-pocket paying options such as cash, deferred, bank financing, Pag-ibig and in-house financing.

Amaia Scapes San Pablo offers an affordable yet picturesque home in Laguna.

The company opened a significant numer of jobs for Filipinos including a 17,000-man sales force in 18 growth centers and sales offices nationwide. Its online followers has soared and includes over 500,000 facebook fans, propelling the brand’s dominance in the digital platform.

Amaia Scapes San Pablo is a horizontal development situated in Brgy. San Lucas 2—a site that gives homeowners a picturesque environment.
“Our fifth year anniversary marks Amaia’s success over the years and the company’s mission in the years to come,” says Amaia Land president Ricky Celis. “We will continue to contribute to nation building by serving thousands of families with quality yet affordable homes in more locations nationwide.”

Pipelining Sustainability by Neltex, showcase their precise state-of-the-art, health-safe pipes, joints and seals at the Worldbex 2015

Neltex Development Co. Inc., the biggest PVC Pipe Manufacturer in the Philippines with the state of the art plant, showcase their precise state-of-the-art, durable and reliable, 100% leak-free, yet environmentally-friendly and health-safe pipes, joints and seals, during the biggest construction show exhibit last March 14- 15, 2015 at Worlbex, World Trade Center Pasay City, with the theme of “Pipelining Sustainability”.

Neltex is one of the most-visited brands at the Worldbex 2015. Many curious visitors have seen eye-catching exhibit of Neltex.

Neltex offers solutions to major pipeline problems.

One of the most common problems is leakage caused by poor jointing and loose gasket resulting to non-revenue water and system loss. Pipe leak is highly caused by improper pipe fitting due to conventional installation and non-secure working condition.

For this, NELTEX offers the use of its PVC NELTEX PRESSURELINE PIPE with machine-installed fixed seal solution that leaves no margin for error.

Major infrastructures constructed decades ago can no longer adapt to climate and environmental changes. Floods and waste water still go through reinforced concrete pipes that are corroded by the hydrogen sulfide present in waste water. These should be changed to the chemically-resistant PVC PIPES of NELTEX.

Road construction is often slowed down due to pipe laying of reinforced concrete pipes. Concrete pipes are only one meter in length and heavy. Jointing these pipes are tedious and could be inaccurate, thus difficult to form long, straight pipes. With concrete pipes jointed in unevent slopes, water could not flow as fast as in smoothly straight pipes, and clogging often occurs.

NELTEX suggests the use of flexible, lightweight, six-meter long PVC NELTEX SEWERGUARD PIPE with SEWERLOCK SEAL that ensures fast installation and less jointing.

Urbanization requires that electrical cables should be contained in pipes and installed underground. Since electrical pipes are installed beside water pipes, it is a must for these pipes to be highly durable, non-corrosive, water tight and air tight. NELTEX meets these requirements with its impact modified PVC POWERGUARD PIPES joined together by means of a fixed seal technology called the POWERLOCK that renders the pipes to be 100% waterproof and air tight.

Climate change and urbanization have certainly affected the requirements expected form the pipeline industry.

Typhoons, averaging 20 times per year, and storm surges cause heavy flooding in thoroughfares and these put unnecessary pressure on water pipes and underground electrical pipes. Environmental wastes seep through the sewers at accelerated speeds and amounts as a result of the ever increasing population. Seemingly endless road construction and repairs that bring about heavy traffic in the metropolis and suburbs have become part of our daily lives. Then, there are also skyscrapers, buildings and houses sprouting like mushrooms almost everywhere.

Without a doubt, much is expected from Neltex. Neltex Development Corporation never stops to develop pipes that respond to the needs of the times because a pipe, after all, is an important component of life in the modern society.
