Good news from Meralco: Lower energy rates this June!

Typhoon season is upon us, but don’t expect sweater or blanket weather soon. It’s still hot and humid! What’s hotter is Meralco’s good news: lower electricity rates this June!

The country’s largest power distributor has announced that residential rates would go down by around Php 0.13 per kWh this month. Meralco says the rate reduction is due to lower generation charges, which is the cost of producing electricity collected by Meralco in behalf of generation companies. In fact, this June’s generation charge is the lowest since October 2004.

Aside from the reduced generation charge, taxes and other charges were also lower at Php 0.033 per kWh. Meralco’s distribution, supply, and metering charges have remained unchanged for nearly a year now.

For an average Filipino household consuming around 200 kWh every month, the new rates mean a reduction of around Php 25 in their June bill.

Meanwhile, typhoon season also brings floods to many areas in Metro Manila. We can avoid accidents at home by keeping in mind these safety reminders from Meralco:

·      Turn off the circuit breaker or main power switch when it’s starting to flood.

·      Unscrew the light bulbs and unplug appliances.

·      When cleaning your circuit breaker, fuse and main power switch, wear rubber gloves and rubber-soled shoes to prevent electrocution.

·      Always hire a licensed electrician to check the electrical wiring. Don’t do it on your own!

·      Bring in your flood-submerged appliances to a professional before turning them on or using them again.

Meralco Power Tech Launch: When innovation meets vision

The Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) is known as the country’s largest distribution utility with over a hundred years in service. Meralco has always been discovering means on how to improve not only its services and products to consumers but also new techniques and methods on enhancing the skills of its employees.

Now visualize this, what if there is a state of the art facility wherein engineers can “work, play and train”? A facility that can really give you an actual feel of the concept or situation you are studying about.
Meralco Chairman Manny V. Pangilinan (2nd from left) and Meralco President & CEO Oscar S. Reyes (3rd from right) lead partners to look at the scale model of PowerTech—the Philippine’s first innovation, R&D, and technical training facility featuring the grid of the future. It will be an incubator for agile and globally competent energy talents capable of supporting advancements in the power and energy ecosystem.
Welcome the Power Tech.

Being one of the most enduring and dynamic enterprises in the Philippines, Meralco once again breaks new ground with the development of the Power Tech. Power Tech will be the country’s first innovation, Research and Development (R&D), and technical training facility that will feature the use of Smart Grid. Gone are the days that the trainings will just be relying on audio visual presentations because Power Tech will act as a simulator. Meralco’s engineers will now have the chance to not only see the lesson but to actually have an “actual feel” of it. This will also serve as a vehicle for bridging the gap between the existing and the evolving technologies.

Meralco’s Vice President and Head of Networks, Ronnie L. Aperocho said, “The Grid Enterprise will allow you to immerse on emerging technologies under a simulated network even before we apply these to the entire system”. He also added, “The Grid Inspiration will ignite the imagination and expand one’s perspective with insights from industry experts and luminaries”.

The primary objectives of Power Tech are identified into three groups. First, to serve as a facility that will rapidly accelerate competency upgrade of both Meralco engineers and other industry players. Second, to provide a test-bed for Smart Grid and as a testing area for new equipment and devices wherein different suppliers can partake. Lastly, to drive innovation and R&D in the Philippine power industry through partnerships with the academe and other power utilities.

As Meralco President and CEO Oscar Reyes said, “In Meralco, we believe that a true center of excellence is ultimately defined by the interplay of best in class hardware, software and most important, highly competent and innovative professionals.”

Meralco President and CEO Oscar Reyes
The Power Tech is set to be fully operational early 2017. This will be a 2-storey, green architecture structure which will be occupying a total floor area of 3,139 sqm in Meralco, Ortigas. Power Tech will be powered by renewable energy sources (solar and wind) and will also be utilizing natural lighting and ventilation. This will also feature different state-of-the art facilities such as the following: The Grid Adventure, Endeavor, Pathfinder and Resolution (Training Labs); the Grid Enterprise (Test Area), the Grid Discovery (Innovation Center) and the Grid Inspiration (Auditorium).

One good thing with the development of Power Tech is that it will strengthen the backbone of knowledge initiatives of Meralco’s engineers. It will be an incubator for agile and globally competent technical professionals who are capable of supporting advancements in the power and energy ecosystem.

Speaking of good things, there are also other benefits of Power Tech to the Academe world, its suppliers and the different power utilities.

In the Academe world, Power Tech will be the partner of different schools, universities and other centers of excellence in ensuring the development of globally competitive professionals in the power industry, with the University of the Philippines–College of Engineering as one of its primary partners. As for the suppliers, Power Tech will serve as a test-bed for Smart Grid and developing technologies. Also, it will serve as an avenue wherein new equipment and devices will be tested. When it comes to power utilities, Power Tech targets to uphold close relations, synergy and continuous interactions with the existing local and international utilities. These utilities are those whose goals regarding the form of training and education initiatives are the same.

Power Tech is a facility with a vision. This is place where our engineers can further hone their skills. A facility where they can unleash their potentials. Meralco is working hard to make this vision a reality so as to be part of the solution –– because it is always a privilege to be able to contribute to the development and advancement of the power and energy ecosystem.

“The heart and soul of the company is creativity and innovation” – Bob Iger

Meralco electricity bills down for the second straight month Lowest generation charge in 56 months

Here's the latest news from Manila Electric Company (Meralco):

After registering a reduction of PhP 0.70 per kilowatthour (kWh) in overall rates last month, the Manila Electric Company (Meralco) said that electricity rates will go down again this month by PhP 0.58 per kWh. This brings the total reduction to PhP 1.28 per kWh over the past two months. This month’s reduction marks the fourth time this year that rates have gone down.

For a typical household consuming 200 kWh, the overall electricity bill will go down by PhP 116 compared to last month. At PhP 9.40 per kWh, this month’s overall rate is lower by PhP 1.21 compared to June 2014’s PhP 10.61 per kWh.

Lower generation costs from IPPs and PSAs

The biggest reduction in the overall rates was due to the generation charge which decreased by PhP 0.36 per kWh from PhP 4.81 per kWh in May to PhP 4.45 per kWh this month. This is its lowest level since October 2010.

The reduction was mainly driven by lower charges from plants under the Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and Power Supply Agreements (PSAs) due to lower fuel costs and higher dispatch of the plants. After running for 19 days on alternate liquid fuel (while the Malampaya natural gas facility was on shutdown) during the April supply month, the natural gas power plants, namely, Ilijan, First Gas-Sta. Rita, and First Gas-San Lorenzo, operated on less expensive Malampaya natural gas this May.

IPPs and PSAs registered reductions of PhP 0.67 and PhP 0.59 per kWh, respectively.

The reductions in IPP and PSA rates more than offset a PhP 2.85 per kWh increase in charges from the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM). It will be recalled that WESM exhibited noticeable price spikes particularly beginning the week of May 11, as a number of plants went on forced outages or reduced their output. The high WESM clearing prices, which at times approached PhP 30 per kWh, were sustained for the rest of the supply month. According to the Philippine Electricity Market Corp. (PEMC), the operator of the WESM, the Secondary Price Cap was not triggered last May.

The share of IPPs, PSAs, and WESM to Meralco’s total power requirements stood at 45, 48, and 7 percent, respectively.

Adjustments in other bill components

In addition to the generation charge, transmission charge also registered a reduction of PhP 0.09 per kWh. Taxes and other charges also went down by PhP 0.06 and PhP 0.07 per kWh, respectively.

Meralco has consistently reiterated that it does not earn from the generation and transmission charges as these are pass-through costs. Payment for the generation charge goes to the power suppliers, while payment for the transmission charge goes to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP). Of the total bill, only the distribution charge accrues to Meralco.

Meralco’s distribution charge has not registered any adjustment or change and has remained at the same level for almost a year or since July 2014 when it reflected a lower rate compared to June of the same year.

Meralco offers free trimming service

In time for the upcoming rainy season, Meralco advises its customers to report cases of tree branches near or touching power lines as these may cause localized power interruptions. They may call Meralco’s Call Center at 16211 to avail of free tree-trimming service.

Power rates down this month

Lower spot market charges and cheaper fuel prices lead to generation charge reduction

OVERALL DECREASE MAY 2015 05.05.15 – May 2015 overall rate decrease infographic

The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) said that overall rates went down by PhP 0.70 per kilowatthour (kWh) this May. Said decrease is due to lower generation costs from all power suppliers of Meralco.

For a typical household consuming 200 kWh, the overall electricity bill will go down by PhP 140. At PhP 9.98 per kWh, this month’s rate is lower by PhP 1.46 compared to May 2014’s PhP 11.44 per kWh.

Lower generation costs from all suppliers

Generation charge decreased by PhP 0.60 per kWh from PhP 5.41 per kWh in April to PhP 4.81 per kWh this month. The reduction was mainly driven by lower charges from the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM) and Independent Power Producers (IPPs), as well as a reduction in the National Power Corporation’s (NPC’s) Generation Rate Adjustment Mechanism (GRAM) collections.

Cost of power obtained from the WESM decreased by PhP 4.19 per kWh due to less occurrences and shorter duration of power plant outages. The Luzon Grid remained on “normal” state throughout the period of the Malampaya shutdown.

Meanwhile, average cost of the Independent Power Producers (IPP) was lower by PhP 0.75 per kWh due to the improved utilization level of the QPPL power plant and cheaper fuel prices obtained by the First Gas plants. The effect of the Malampaya shutdown was moderated by lower prices of condensate and natural gas in the April supply month versus March. Malampaya natural gas underwent its quarterly repricing to reflect the lower cost of fuel. From $10.39 per gigajoule (GJ) the previous period, price of natural gas has been reduced by 19% to $8.44 per GJ.

Average rates of plants under the Power Supply Agreements (PSAs) also decreased this month by PhP 0.06 per kWh. Finally, NPC’s collections of its GRAM similarly went down by PhP 0.06 per kWh.

The share of IPPs, PSAs, and WESM to Meralco’s total power requirements stood at 47, 43, and 10 percent respectively.

Adjustments in other bill components

In addition to the generation charge, taxes and other charges registered reductions of PhP 0.07 and PhP 0.08 per kWh, respectively. These offset a PhP 0.05 per kWh increase in the transmission charge.

Meralco reiterated that it does not earn from the pass-through charges, such as the generation and transmission charges. Payment for the generation charge goes to the power suppliers, while payment for the transmission charge goes to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP). Of the total bill, only the distribution, supply, and metering charges accrue to Meralco.

Meralco’s distribution charge has not registered any adjustment and has remained at the same level for 10 months now or since July 2014.
