MVP Announces FREE INTERNET for Smart, Sun Cellular and Talk ‘N Text Prepaid!

The much awaited announcement by Manny V. Pangilinan made at the Makati Shangrila Hotel, September 26, 2014. It wasn’t about running for public office but the announcement is for an advocacy and promo they want to give more to people - Smart, Sun Cellular and Talk ‘N Text Prepaid subscribers.

In an unprecedented move, wireless services leader Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) together with Talk ‘N Text and Sun Cellular today announced that they will start providing free Internet access to its prepaid subscriber base via their mobile phones.

Manuel V. Pangilinan, (MVP) chairman of Smart and its parent company PLDT has announced that all subscribers of Smart Prepaid, Sun Prepaid and Talk ‘N Text will be able to use mobile internet for free. He said that these subscribers can post status on Facebook, upload photos on Instagram, listen to streaming music on Spinnr, shopping on Lazada or Zalora, and of course browse your favorite websites.

"We are launching this initiative to provide a much larger number of Filipinos the opportunity to try out and experience the Internet, enjoy its benefits and, as we at Smart like to say, live more," MVP said.

“This special offer is specifically designed to assist our prepaid subscribers who make up the bulk of our population. Many of them have the mobile devices capable of accessing the Internet but have yet to use them to go online,” said MVP.

Through this special offer, all of the 66 million Smart Prepaid, Talk ‘N Text, and Sun Cellular Prepaid subscribers can use their data-enabled cellphones to browse through and post on their Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts, visit their favorites websites, search on Google and Wikipedia, use navigation tools like Waze and Google Maps, book a cab or limo service via Easy Taxi and Uber, or use traffic info sites such as the MMDA's and InterAksyon's.

They can also send and receive emails, read their favorite blogs or update their own blogs, listen to songs via Smart’s Spinnr music service, shop via online stores like Zalora, Lazada, book their travel details through sites like Skyscanner and Expedia, among other things – all without incurring data charges.

Orlando B. Vea, Smart's chief wireless advisor said, "This special offer is in line with our advocacy of 'Internet for All'."

"It complements the affordable mobile Internet packages that Smart has been introducing over the past year. Among the latest of such innovations are PowerApp and PisoNet service which provides 10 minutes of mobile Internet access for one peso."

They’re encouraging prepaid subscribers to go online and experience mobile internet life without having to pay and subscribe for special prepaid data promos.

To avail of this promo, subscribers must:

**  have an available airtime balance of at least PhP 1 or is subscribed to any load bucket or promo

** register each day by sending "FREE" to "9999" (registration is free)

An SMS confirmation will be received upon successful registration.

Once registered, subscribers can enjoy free data of up to 30MB per day. However, data charges apply to peer-to-peer uploads and download, VOIP, and messaging.

Smart, Sun and Talk ‘N Text prepaid subscribers can start using their free mobile data starting today with at least 1 peso in their prepaid balance. Though The Big Boss of PLDT, MVP mentioned and encouraged that mobile browsing and app usage that requires internet connectivity can be used with their free mobile data, accessing streaming videos like YouTube and torrent downloading are not allowed. A paywall would appear and will advise the user to top-up their credits to access those features. “Free” here means no data charges, not unlimited bandwidth.

Smart, Sun Cellular, or Talk ‘n Text prepaid SIM on a data-enabled mobile device, you can enjoy up to 30mb of FREE mobile Internet per day for two months. Subscribers can access the internet either through data-capable feature phones or smartphones running on Android, iOS and Windows operating systems.

The promo is good up to November 30, 2014.

This move complements Smart’s other affordable Internet access innovations, such as PisoNet, which gives users 10 minutes of mobile Internet access for one peso.

Unrivaled network

Smart’s free mobile Internet offer follows the telco leader’s recent announcement that it has stepped up the deployment of its mobile internet network, to meet the growing demand for mobile data services.

Smart recently reported a 73% hike in mobile data traffic, as smartphone prices continue to fall and innovative services like SmartNet and PisoNet allow more and more Filipinos to gain access to the Internet via their mobile phones.

“The strength and resiliency of our mobile data infrastructure enable us to make this special free internet offer available to our prepaid subscribers. Moreover, we continue to expand the reach of our network so that we can bring the internet to more communities all over the country,” said Napoleon L. Nazareno, president and CEO of Smart and PLDT.

The PLDT Group has thus far rolled out about 90,000 kilometers of fiber optic cables all over the country which provides the transmission facilities needed to support internet services. It has also the most extensive international cable systems needed to connect the Philippines to the rest of the world.

Smart now fires up LTE-Advanced, PH goes ‘5G’ !

The Philippines goes ‘5G’ now as wireless services leader Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) fires up LTE-Advanced.

Two years after it pioneered the deployment of Long-Term Evolution (LTE) or 4G technology in the country, Smart announced that 5G wireless technology LTE-Advanced (LTE-A), is now running in the Philippines’ largest and strongest network.

Smart switched on LTE-A at the Smart Jump Center in Mandaluyong City recently, setting the next phase of mobile communication technology beyond 4G LTE standards.

LTE-A, also referred to as ‘5G’ by reports on leading global mobile operators AT&T and T-Mobile, delivers data from between 100 megabits per second (mbps) to 1 gigabit per second (Gbps), or ten times faster than 3G services and more than twice as fast as 4G services.

By firing up LTE-A technology on its network, Smart joins only a handful of carriers around the world with an LTE-A network, along with leading mobile operators in South Korea, United States, Singapore, Australia, and Hong Kong.

Co-founder and Chief Wireless Advisor of Smart Orlando B. Vea (first from left) during the tests of 5G LTE-A in Smart last year, where speeds reaching 209.66 mbps were recorded.

Orlando B. Vea, founder and Chief Wireless Advisor of Smart, said “even as our 3G and 4G networks continue to be unrivaled, Smart becomes the first operator to leap into the future and put the Philippines at par with the world’s most advanced countries in terms of mobile communications technology.”

With LTE-A, a 10MB file takes less than a second to download, YouTube videos no longer have to buffer, and video calls are almost lag-free. But beyond speed, LTE-A’s main feature is also its capability to allocate more network resources to users when the need arises.

Last year, Smart started testing LTE-A across the country delivering results of more than 100Mbps in Makati City, in Boracay, and in Davao City during the Kadayawan festival.

The recent development is part of the company’s multi-pronged approach in addressing the various needs for internet and data services in the market.

“The PLDT Group’s strategy has always been to create solutions that address the varying needs of all segments of our customers, to bring fixed, wireless and mobile broadband services where they really matter. They may be delivered at different speeds and volumes, using a variety of technologies, and meant to respond to a wide range of needs of the market – but all of it is aimed at bringing the benefits of the internet to every Filipino,” explained Ramon Isberto, Public Affairs head for Smart and its parent company the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT).

This strategy meant deploying a combination of Fiber-to-the-Home, Next Generation Network, Time-Division Duplex LTE, Frequency-Division Duplex LTE and vDSL to bring internet to every Filipino home, and 3G, 4G, and 5G or LTE-A for mobile subscribers, according to Isberto.

“We are able to deliver all these high-bandwidth services and applications on the strength of our transmission backbone network, which is the most extensive and most resilient in the country. Aside from allowing us to commit to speed, our unmatched network resources give us the edge in terms of efficiency and reliability,” added Isberto.

Smart’s nationwide coverage is backed by PLDT’s fiber optic cable connection which has now reached nearly 90,000 kilometers, or more than four times than competition. To further strengthen this domestic fiber optic network (DFON), PLDT also set up third legs in its fiber loops in key areas nationwide, the latest of which is the Bohol DFON project that provided redundant links between the Visayas and Mindanao.

Aside from the Social package, users can regularly subscribe to other bundles that include the Email, Chat, and Photo packages which are similarly available through the PowerApp mobile application.

For workaholics who cannot miss a single email, PowerApp’s Email package is available for P10 per day (Email10) or P5 for 3 hours (Email5). Available apps and mobile sites under this e-mail bundle are Gmail, Yahoo! Mail, Outlook.com and Exchange.

Students who love to chat with their friends can now enjoy a wide-range of chat applications from PowerApp’s Chat package. For only P10 a day (Chat10) or P5 for three hours (Chat5), subscribers can have unlimited access to multiple chat applications such as Line, WeChat, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Oist!, Google Hangouts, Chikka Messenger, Viber, and KakaoTalk.

Unlimited #Selfies, #ThrowbackThursdays and #OOTDs are also now possible through PowerApp’s Photo package for P20 for all-day access (Photo20) or P10 for three hours (Photo10). Included apps in the photo bundle are Instagram, Tumblr, Regram, Pinterest, Flickr and Imgur.

For the multi-hyphenated all-around man, PowerApp also has an Unli package which gives them access to all mobile sites and mobile applications. For only P30 for 24 hours (Unli30) or P15 for three hours (Unli15), Powerapp users can enjoy unlimited browsing of all available apps and mobile sites.

While the app is initially available only on Android, iOS and feature phone users can send the corresponding keyword of their desired package to either 5555 (for Smart Prepaid, Postpaid, Infinity and Talk ‘N Text users), 9990 (For Smart Freedom Plan subscribers) or 7577 (For Smart Pospaid All-In users) to avail of the different packages.

“Subscribers can count on Smart to continue to bring these revolutionary mobile innovations to the public as the Internet becomes a vital resource of content and information that enrich their lives and allow them to live more,” Curran added.

Smart, Sun and Easy Taxi help commuters beat the holiday traffic

The convenience of taxi commuting via the Easy Taxi app is best enjoyed with Smart and Sun’s unbeatable mobile Internet surfing offers, currently the most affordable in the country today.

Very stressful and so tired of being turned down by choosy taxi drivers. But here's how to  rid yourself of holiday commuting woes with the mobile taxi-booking service, Easy Taxi.

What’s even better is that up until December 27 this year, all Smart, Sun Cellular and Talk ‘N Text subscribers in Metro Manila can use the service without having to pay the P70 booking fee.

Available on Android and iOS smartphones, the Easy Taxi mobile app offers a convenient way for users to virtually hail a taxi to take them to their destination. By having a cab automatically assigned to them, passengers can avoid choosy cab drivers that tend to run rampant during the month of December.

“We’ve all experienced the headaches of hailing a cab during the holiday season. With this partnership from Smart and Easy Taxi, booking a taxi to take you back to your home or to any shopping mall is now just a few clicks away on your smartphone,” said Michele Curran, Data and International Services Marketing Head at Smart and Sun.

Here's how to book an Easy Taxi cab:

* Simply open the app on your phone and choose your desired pick-up point on the map. After this, provide important details such as landmarks, your desired destination, the amount of tip to give your driver and the type of cab you want to fetch you and take you to your destination.

* After clicking the "Request Taxi” button, users will immediately receive the driver's details including the name, photo, car model, phone number, and plate number. This gives them the peace of mind that should any emergency arise during the trip, they already have the necessary information to give the authorities.

To enjoy unlimited mobile surfing for one day, just text Unli<space>50 to 211 (Smart) or i50 to 247 (Sun) using your mobile phones. For instant Internet access, just turn on your phone’s data connection and use the app for only P5 per 15 mins. of mobile internet usage.

To download the Easy Taxi app, simply proceed to the Apple App Store (https://itunes.apple.com/ph/app/easy-taxi-app/id567264775?mt=8) or the Google Play Store (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=br.com.easytaxi).

“Easy Taxi prioritizes the safety and quality of service offered to its customers by confirming that the passenger has successfully boarded the vehicle through a personal call, all the way to a feedback form after every booking,” explained Mario Berta, Regional CEO of Easy Taxi.

With the traffic rush and safety risks during the holidays, Easy Taxi’s zero booking fee is certainly a pleasant treat for all Smart, Talk ‘N Text and Sun subscribers.
