Furthering our safety and privacy commitments for teens on TikTok

People from all walks of life come to TikTok to be entertained, spark joy in their everyday, and share their creativity with others. Be it through viewing the latest book recommendations on #BookTok or showing off their new digs on #renovation, everyone can find their community on TikTok – and our goal is to foster a safe and welcoming platform for these vibrant, diverse communities.

TikTok offers a range of safety and privacy controls to empower people to make decisions about who they share their content with. They also believe it's important to ensure even stronger proactive protections to help keep teenagers safe, and have continually introduced changes to support age-appropriate experiences on their platform. This includes making accounts belonging to those under the age of 16 private by default, reserving features like Direct Messaging to people 16 and older, and enabling parents to guide their teen's TikTok presence with Family Pairing.

Today they are introducing a new set of changes for users aged 13-17 to further enhance these proactive protections. These changes will continue rolling out to their users globally over the coming months.

New changes to Direct Messaging privacy settings

TikTok wants to help teens make active decisions about their privacy settings, so when someone aged 16-17 joins TikTok, their Direct Messaging setting will now be set to 'No One' by default. To message others, they will need to actively switch to a different sharing option. Existing accounts who have never used DMs before will receive a prompt asking them to review and confirm their privacy settings the next time they use this feature. These updates build on their current messaging protections, such as not allowing images or videos to be sent in messages and disabling messaging for accounts under age 16.

Decide who can watch your videos

The process of making a TikTok is fun and creative – choosing music, picking effects, and getting the transitions right – but it is just as important to choose who that video will be shared with. To help teens understand the sharing options available to them, TikTok is now adding a pop-up that appears when teenagers under the age of 16 are ready to publish their first video, asking them to choose who can watch the video. They won't be able to publish their video until they make a selection.

With each video going forward, creators can decide who can watch before they post. Accounts aged 13-15 are set to private by default, and private accounts can choose to share their content with Followers or Friends, as the 'Everyone' setting is turned off. Duet and Stitch are also disabled for accounts under 16.

Choose who can download your public videos

TikTok is also providing additional context to help teens aged 16-17 understand how downloads work, so they can choose the option that's most comfortable for them. If they opt to turn the feature on, they'll now receive a pop-up asking them to confirm that choice before others can download their videos. Note that downloads are permanently disabled on content from accounts under the age of 16.

A mindful approach to push notifications

TikTok prioritizes and supports the well-being of their community members, with features like Screen Time Management that can be enabled both by account holders or by parents as part of Family Pairing. They want to help their younger users in particular develop positive digital habits early on, and they regularly consult with leading pediatric experts and youth well-being advocates to develop their Youth Portal, bullying prevention guide, and other features that support youth-well being. Now, they will be drawing upon this research to make changes that reduce the time period during which their younger teens can receive push notifications. Accounts aged 13-15 will not receive push notifications from 9pm, and accounts aged 16-17 will have push notifications disabled starting at 10pm.

These changes continue to build on their ongoing commitments as there's no finish line when it comes to protecting the safety, privacy, and well-being of their community. They are working with teens, community organizations, parents and creators to further innovate and they're excited to share more over the coming months. To learn more about their efforts to support youth and families, you can read our Guardian's Guide.

Pour Yourself a Cup of Tea and Enjoy Justine Luzares' Funny TikToks

The comedy creator caught the attention of viewers on TikTok because of his impressive British accent.

Manila, Philippines - May 28, 2021 - TikTok has turned out to be the perfect platform for funny guy Justine Luzares to express himself creatively. He always knew that he wanted to write funny skits, but didn't consider becoming a comedian himself, until he started using TikTok. "I realized I can actually act the part," Justine shares. "We're on TikTok to have fun and be entertained. Putting smiles on people's faces is the easiest way to sell your content to people."

Apart from showing off his funny side, his videos also give him the chance to showcase his ability to put on different accents, a talent he learned from watching movies. He first tried it out after seeing the 2004 movie, Troy, which starred Brad Pitt and Eric Bana. He says, "It was a long process. I started learning it when I was still in 7th grade. It didn't happen overnight. It took quite a lot of movies just to somehow master it." Mimicking speech patterns of characters from the popular TV series, Game of Thrones, particularly Viserys Targaryen, also helped Justine refine his accent. Since then, he has learned how to do Indian and Australian accents as well.

Justine responds to a fan's request to do an Indian accent here.

Currently based in Alabang, he works as a process trainer in the BPO industry, and does TikTok for fun. Among his videos, his Marites series has become his most popular, even reaching viral status on the platform. "I have received overwhelming support every time I post a Marites video, especially the ones you can duet," Justine says. "I guess people just found an excuse to showcase or just try a British accent through my videos."

TikTok's Doctor Mom Mirah Borja Finds Balance Between Family and Career

Get to know this inspiring supermom, and learn how she juggles home life and hospital work while dealing with the ongoing pandemic

Manila, Philippines - May 11, 2021 - When you are a wife and a mom, it is easy to lose yourself in the busyness of day-to-day life. But this doesn't mean that having a successful career is impossible when you have a family. The key is to find a balance between home life and work, accept the sacrifices that need to be made, and find fulfillment in all that you do.

All this is what Doctor Mom, Mirah Borja, has done and continues to do, as she juggles family and career.

Known online as @doctormomph, Mirah is also a TikTok creator who shares helpful information on obstetric and gynecologic conditions, the journey from pregnancy to motherhood, and the wonders of parenting. She shares, "In this time of pandemic, access to health care has become limited and this is why I have dedicated majority of my videos to respond to medical inquiries that have been posted on my comments section. I myself went through a pregnancy during this pandemic, and it felt tougher than I had imagined. Like how I felt, I know that there are pregnant mothers out there who wanted to seek consult but fear putting themselves and their babies at risk."

One of Mirah's first videos talks about danger signs to watch out for during pregnancy, a subject that is important to her as a medical professional. "As an Obstetrician, I am very particular about this, and this is what we advise all our patients to watch out for before sending them home. Not only does it assure me that I have well-advised my patients, but it also makes my patients feel empowered that she is able to look after her and her baby’s well-being as well," she says.

Apart from being a doctor, Mirah is also a first-time mom. She says that, while she is devoted to her profession, her top priority will always be her child. But being able to balance family time and work is hard enough, and the COVID-19 pandemic has made things even more difficult. Mirah shares, "Being a devoted mom, being a devoted wife, all the while being a devoted doctor takes practice. It took a whole lot of patience and skill to attune myself to this constantly changing environment that is full of uphill struggles, decisions, and joy. I try to balance work and family by creating a “To do list” for the following day before I go sleep, waking up early every day and being productive as much as I can during the day so that I can spend the night with my family."

One of the biggest hurdles faced by Mirah during the pandemic was having to leave her then two-week old daughter to attend to her patients. "I think it was the hardest moment I had during this motherhood – the first time that I had to leave her side. Imagine not being able to breastfeed, not being able to go home to hold, hug, and kiss your baby because of fear of exposing her to the disease. I longed for her, and knowing that she too was longing for me was the hardest thing to endure at that time," she shares. Despite the sacrifices, Mirah believes that the best thing about being a working mom is being able to continue doing what she loves. Being a physician is, for her, the most fulfilling job.

Mirah's advice to other moms, whether they work or stay at home is, "As moms, we will always somehow tend to put everyone else’s needs before our own – Mommy’s instinct! But this may eventually lead to mommy burnout. So take a break once in a while." She adds, "Do not be ashamed to take a breather. Making time for yourself is a must."

Viral Rico Blanco TikTok gets reimagined by producer/singer-songwriter raven

Rising producer/singer-songwriter raven teams up with indie pop artists Naila and somere on the new single “S.U.K.I.”—released today via Sony Music Philippines.

The lo-fi jam, which was produced by raven and Rico Blanco, takes into account the pain and longing of someone who gave his all, but failed miserably to mend what’s left of the romantic relationship. Collaborators Naila and somere, who also provided their lilting vocals to the insanely catchy bop, are also credited as songwriters for this special project featuring different generations of musicians.

Putting together the entire song is interesting from a production standpoint, as it started from a random challenge posted by alternative rock icon Rico Blanco on TikTok, where he played a piano while beatboxing for others to explore with either a rap verse or a vocal melody with lyrics.

Blanco’s captivating instrumental, which only lasted for a few seconds, has racked up over 2.8 million views on the platform since it was uploaded late last year.

Multi-instrumentalist and singer/rapper raven took the challenge seriously and wrote verses that sting with melancholic thoughts. The genre-bending artist shares in a statement, “S.U.K.I. was actually based from my own personal experience. I wrote it as a tribute to a young love that didn’t end up pretty well, despite trying everything to make it work.”

Up-and-coming singer-songwriters Naila and somere completed the musical narrative by writing and singing their own verse on the rap ballad, giving the material a refreshing perspective that complements raven’s bedroom pop treatment.

According to 15-year-old artist Naila, her verse was lifted from a poem she personally penned when she was in 8th grade. “It was when I finished reading a book about a couple with a very tragic love story, I was so attached to it to the point that I even made a poem using the female protagonist’s point of view. I was scanning my old notebooks that time and saw the poem that I wrote. I really wanted to make it into a song and then eventually, Sir Rico’s video showed on my timeline, which gave me an idea of duetting on his video and posting it in TikTok.”

It took 16-year-old artist somere days to think of the words to “S.U.K.I.,” but ended up with lyrics of her own that reflects an important phase in her life. “Things became unfortunate, I had a very bad mental breakdown and words of pain suddenly came out of my mouth. I decided to duet Sir Rico’s video, thinking that maybe someone out there may be going through the same thing, and maybe I can use my voice to give that person a nice warm virtual hug.”

The collaborative ideas led to the low-key gem that is “S.U.K.I.,” which brought an entirely confessional safe space for the artists to bask in their individual pain and come up with a song that could inspire others to move forward and be better.

Its music video, which was shot in a lush greenery somewhere in Tanay, Rizal, features raven enjoying his sweet time outside of the city.

raven’s “S.U.K.I.” is out now on all digital platforms worldwide via Sony Music Philippines.

5 Women Who Inspire and Empower Other Women Online and in the Real World

TikTok celebrates International Women's Day with #SheShines2021, a webinar showcasing notable female creators who help make the app a positive and inclusive community.

Manila, Philippines - March 5, 2021 - TikTok takes pride in being a positive and inclusive platform, where women are empowered to express themselves creatively and authentically. Female creators on the app have helped transform TikTok into a real, inspiring, fun, and educational space for all, and they continue to do so each time they share creative new content.

Antoinette Taus (@antoinettetaus)

Filipino-American actress, humanitarian, and Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Environment Programme, Antointette Taus, is a long-time fixture in the local entertainment industry. Recognized as one of the most influential role models of the youth of her generation, Antoinette's main mission is to empower the youth to take the lead in the transition toward a future that is centered on the betterment of people and the planet—without leaving anyone behind. She founded the non-profit organization “CORA” (Communities Organized for Resource Allocation) and the purpose-driven business “The Sustainable Planet”, which are dedicated to creating sustainable programs and solutions to help solve global issues focused on hunger, poverty, inequality, mental health, plastic pollution, and climate change.

For Antoinette, in order to be supportive of other women, you must first, be kind.

"Uplifting each other, being kind to each other, not judging each other. Just imagine, you don't even have to look for support if naturally we just always tried to either to be kind or uplift everything around us that women and the girls are doing."      -- Antoinette Taus

Pau Kimberly (@paukimberly)

Self-love advocate, Pau Kimberly, uses TikTok as a platform to make others feel better about themselves. In a lot of her videos, she encourages her followers, the women in particular, to rise up after each fall. In Pau's content, one powerful message that we all need to hear shines through - "You are enough."

"We as a society are not yet used to women standing up for themselves, women that are strong and independent, women that are empowered, women that are not believing in timelines, women that are very career-driven. I use my platform to raise awareness that we shouldn't care about others' opinions. We as women are enough, and are worthy, in our own rights."  -- Pau Kimberly

Veronica Limcaoco (@beloynica)

Veronica "Ron" Limacaoco is an active member of Girls Got Game PH (@girlsgotgameph), a non-profit organization that works to empower young women through sports. The group organizes roving sports camps in underprivileged areas throughout the Philippines. Here, girls can learn how to play different sports, which helps them build self-confidence. As a result, Girls Got Game PH actually helps to build our country's future, one self-reliant woman at a time.

Veronica believes that women must work together to empower one another.

"There's no one perfect way to do things, like we are all after the same goal - Women empowerment. We are just doing it differently, I might be doing it through sports but in the end we only have the same goal, and it's impossible for one person, one organization to do it all. So, the best thing to do is work together."     -- Veronica Limacaoco

Nove-Ann Tan (@ihomeschoolph)

Homeschooling advocate, Nove-Ann Tan, is a hands-on homeschooling mom who also provides support for other homeschoolers. She has also authored two books, "I Homeschool: How to Homeschool Without Losing Your Mind" and "Happy Wife, Happy Life", and hosts a weekly podcast where she shares valuable insights and information about homeschooling.

For Nove-Ann, it is important to make other women feel that they are not alone in whatever they may be going through.

"It's making a message that 'Hey, you are not alone, I am here.' Magtulungan tayo. Never be ashamed of your your weakness, of what you're going through, because you will never know, you'll be a blessing. May isang taong lang na mag-swipe sa TikTok mo, kahit na isang tao lang ang matulungan sa message mo, it would be very valuable."    -- Nove-Ann Tan

Maica Teves

Maica Teves is the Executive Director of Samahan ng mga Pilipina para sa Reporma at Kaunlaran (SPARK!) Philippines. Learn More About the COVID-19 Vaccine in the Philippines Through #VaccineAlamin : TikTok partners with the Manila City Government on this important COVID-19 vaccine education campaign

The COVID-19 vaccine is gradually becoming available around the world, and in the Philippines, preparations are underway for a vaccination program roll-out in the coming months. Vaccination plays a key role in ending the COVID-19 pandemic by preparing a person's immune system to fight the virus, should you be exposed. This potentially helps to reduce its spread within entire communities.

At present, the majority of Filipinos are still unwilling to receive the vaccine due to concerns over its safety, according to the latest Pulse Asia survey. This poses a challenge to the implementation plans of both local and national government units. To address this, the City Government of Manila has partnered with TikTok for #VaccineAlamin, a COVID-19 vaccine education campaign. #VaccineAlamin aims to boost awareness on the health benefits of immunization, and spread accurate information about the COVID-19 vaccine to the public.

The #VaccineAlamin Campaign was launched via TikTok Live last February 22. During the event, Manila Mayor Isko Moreno provided an overview of what local government units are doing to support the nationwide vaccination program. According to him, their goal is not to force people to get vaccinated but instead encourage and help educate them, to enable more Filipinos to make informed decisions once the vaccination program is underway.

Mayor Isko identified fear and misinformation as two of the biggest barriers that need to be broken down. He said,
"Kaya nagkaroon ng doubt ang ating mga kababayan, dahil dun sa nangyaring isang bakuna na medyo nagkaroon ng masamang impresyon ang mga mamamayan. Pangalawa, 'yung mga misinformation about existing vaccines all over the world."

The mayor also stressed the importance of communication, adding that the most effective strategy is to engage people, and make sure that they have access to factual information. He said,
"I think it's more on talking to the people, kaya kami nagpapasalamat sa TikTok, because this is a set of audience, because of its demographics, if we can use this type of outlet, malaking bagay kasi 'yung tao directly makatatanong samin."
He adds,
"Having TikTok nowadays, helps us. People are into it, so why not use it as a form of communication. Sa dami nang binabasa ng mga tao ngayon, sa dami ng pumapasok na impormasyon sa tao ngayon, kailangan maging catchy."

Manila City Health Officer, Dr. Arnold Pangan, also spoke at the launch event. He explained some important things that people need to know about the vaccine. Dr. Pangan clarified that, while the vaccine protects you from suffering from a serious form of COVID-19, it is still possible to get the disease after being vaccinated against it. This is why it is important to still take precautions such as physical distancing and mask-wearing.

According to Dr. Pangan, "You may still be infected with the COVID-19 virus, tuloy-tuloy pa rin dapat ang ating pag-iingat kahit social distancing, kahit wearing of mask, kasi it's not a guarantee. Pag nabakunahan ka na, ang maganda doon, you will be protected from having a severe form of COVID-19 infection."

Whether it is a skit, a song, or a dance video, as long as it helps spread #VaccineAlamin's message, it is sure to make a difference. Mayor Isko himself issued a challenge to TikTok creators to join the hashtag challenge in order to amplify the campaign.
