Celebrating Earth Day With A Showcase of OPPO’s Innovation on Green Data Center

Earth Day is a significant occasion for people worldwide to raise awareness about the importance of protecting our planet. This year's theme, "Invest in Our Planet," resonates with OPPO’s long-term investment in sustainable development.

Aligned with its mission “Technology for Mankind, Kindness for the World”, OPPO pledged to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 across its operations. The OPPO AndesBrain (Binhaiwan Bay) IDC, OPPO's first self-built data center, exemplifies its dedication to integrating infrastructure and business innovations to reduce carbon emissions and make a long-term investment in preserving the Earth.

Using 100% renewable energy

In today's digital age, the demand for data storage, artificial intelligence, and high-performance computing is constantly growing. The OPPO AndesBrain (Binhaiwan Bay) IDC, which commenced operations in late 2022, serves as OPPO's center for data security, computing, and algorithm innovation.

To minimize carbon emissions, the data center relies on 100% renewable energy sources. Since 2022, it has utilized 6.176 gigawatt-hours of renewable power, equivalent to a reduction of 3,600 tCO2e in emissions. Additionally, with the rainwater harvesting system for cooling circulation applied in the data center, about 30,000 tons of water will be saved annually.

Applying immersion cooling technology to enhance energy efficiency

Besides utilizing 100% renewable energy, the OPPO AndesBrain (Binhaiwan Bay) IDC continuously explores and adopts cutting-edge, low-carbon technologies to improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions. A key breakthrough of this exploration is the research and implementation of immersion cooling technology for GPU server clusters.

Current data centers are estimated to consume up to 3% of the world’s total electricityand one of the key culprits of this consumption is cooling systems[1] which is a significant amount of energy consumption. Efficient heat dissipation method has long been a challenge in the industry. Traditional data centers typically rely on mechanical cooling devices like fans and air conditioners, which consume extra energy and emit higher levels of CO2.

Immersion cooling technology for GPU server clusters is an innovation solution that OPPO employs to improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions. This technology entails submerging servers directly in a non-conductive liquid, which removes heat generated during operation without requiring active cooling from equipment like fans and air conditioners. The heated liquid circulates, cools, and returns to continue absorbing the heat. The reclaimed heat can be then repurposed in other areas, such as heating in the dormitory and hot water provision, substantially increasing energy efficiency. The adoption of immersion cooling technology leads to a 45% improvement in energy efficiency and an industry-leading data center power usage efficiency (PUE) as low as 1.15.

Digitalization Carbon Emission Management

As a global technology company operating in over 60 countries and regions, OPPO has also developed a carbon emission data platform, to analyze the data of carbon emission from OPPO’s self-build clouds services and servers worldwide.

Starting from Chinese market in July 2022, OPPO began issuing monthly Carbon Emission Bills caused by OPPO Cloud service to customers as part of a broader effort to foster a green intelligent engine.

Model of OPPO Cloud Carbon Emission Data Platform

OPPO continuously explores innovative solutions to contribute to sustainable development and green data centers are just one of them. Protecting this Earth requires long-term strategy and commitment, and OPPO is doing our part as a global citizen to work towards a greener future.

SNAP celebrates Earth Day with simultaneous clean-up drive and tree-planting

Renewable energy solutions provider SN Aboitiz Power (SNAP) Group joins the rest of the world in celebrating Earth Day 2021 through activities that align with the 2021 Earth Day theme, “Restore Our Earth.”

SNAP team members and volunteers participated in the worldwide celebration of Earth Day 2021 with the theme “Restore Our Earth.”

On April 22, SNAP conducted a clean-up drive simultaneous with tree-planting activities in areas surrounding their Magat hydroelectric power plant in Ramon, Isabela; Ambuklao hydroelectric power plant in Bokod, Benguet; and in Binga hydroelectric power plant in Itogon, Benguet.

Despite the controlled number of participants due to COVID-19 safety measures, this year’s clean-up drives were joined by a total of 49 volunteers composed of SNAP employees mostly on lockdown duty, contractors, and local workers/residents of Magat, Ambuklao, and Binga hydroelectric power plant facilities. Members of the Philippine National Police (PNP) also took part in the clean-up drive in Benguet. Safety protocols were strictly observed throughout the activity.

Around 250 kilograms of mixed wastes were collected at the Magat crest in Isabela, along the Agno River Estero below the Binga powerhouse in Benguet, and other areas surrounding SNAP facilities. The SNAP-Magat volunteers capped the day with tree-planting and gardening activities as a commemoration of Earth Day 2021. Earlier on March 27, SNAP Group likewise switched off non-essential lights for one hour in observance of Earth Hour.

These annual activities are observed consistently to signify SNAP’s support for better environmental practices as part of its overall environmental sustainability program. “Not despite the pandemic but precisely because of the pandemic, we continue to do as much as we can to promote not only environment-supportive practices but also develop long-term sustainability projects with our host communities. Sooner is better, but it is always a good time to get engaged and do something for our environment to benefit not only the current generation but also the next,” said Mike C. Hosillos, SNAP chief corporate services officer.

SN Aboitiz Power (SNAP) is a joint venture of Scatec Solar and Aboitiz Power Corporation (AP). Scatec is a Norway-based leading renewable power producer that delivers affordable and clean energy worldwide. As a long-term player, Scatec develops, builds, owns, and operates solar, wind, and hydro power plants and storage solutions. AP is the holding company of the Philippines-based Aboitiz Group’s investments in power generation, distribution, and retail electricity services. It advances business and communities by providing reliable and ample power supply at a reasonable and competitive price, and with the least adverse effects on the environment and host communities.

SNAP owns and operates the 105-MW Ambuklao and 140-MW Binga hydroelectric power plants in Benguet; the 388-MW Magat hydroelectric power plant on the border of Isabela and Ifugao; and the 8.5-MW Maris hydroelectric power plant in Isabela.

Century Pacific plant-based brands allow consumers to help plant trees for Mother Earth

How would you like to buy your favorite plant-based products and help the environment by having a coconut tree planted on your behalf?

To celebrate Earth Week 2021, Century Pacific Food Inc (CNPF), one of the largest branded food companies in the Philippines is enjoining consumers to join its mission to give back to Mother Earth  and to Philippine coconut farmers by planting trees to increase coconut supply, help the environment, and minimize carbon emissions.

CNPF, in partnership with non-profit organization HOPE, encourages and challenges its customers to plant a tree, support our local farmers, and minimize carbon emissions through its portfolio of healthy brands – Coco Mama, Vita Coco, and unMeat.

Coco Mama and Vita Coco offer consumers a convenient way to enjoy the goodness of coconuts – rich in potassium, high in antioxidants, and with healthy benefits for  the heart, kidney, and blood sugar. UnMeat, a 100% plant-based brand,  is a healthy meat alternative made with non-GMO plant-based ingredients, zero cholesterol and trans-fat, while remaining a good source of protein and fiber.

The company is offering special product bundles of these brands, and each bundle comes with a guarantee that one tree will be planted on behalf of the customers.  Proceeds for the promo will go to the coconut farmers of Sarangani.

The bundle offerings are in line with CNPF’s broader sustainability program, specifically a long-term commitment to provide Philippine farmers 100,000 free coconut seedlings to farmers every year, over the next 5 to 8 years.

On top of expanding coconut supply in South Central Mindanao and helping augment the income of 16,000 farmers and their families, the new trees are expected to offset about 416,680 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions, allowing CNPF’s coconut business to be “carbon neutral” by 2028.

To join and support this project, consumers simply need to purchase bundles of Coco Mama, Vita Coco, and unMeat at Century Pacific’s food stores in Shopee and Lazada. The bundles are available from April 19 to 25.

Coco Mama Fresh Gata, the coconut cream that has first pressed quality, joins this campaign to help protect our environment.  For every purchase of 5 pieces Coco Mama 200 mL, CNPF guarantees one tree will be planted on behalf of the customer.

Hydrate naturally with the coconut goodness of Vita Coco as it offers 11+1 Coconut Water 330ml Promo Pack which entitles customers to one tree to be planted on their behalf. With this offer, you are not only boosting and loading your body with electrolytes but also protecting and nourishing Mother Earth.

Flexitarians, and fans of plant-based meals can choose from two bundles of unMeat: Pack 1 – Burger, Nuggets, and Giniling; and Pack 2 – Sausage, Nuggets, and Giniling.  For every purchase of one bundle, a tree will be planted by CNPF.

So have a meaningful Earth Week celebration by shopping with these healthy brands that are not just good for you, but good for the planet too.

The Coco Mama, Vita Coco, and unMeat bundle offers are available until April 25 on the Century Food Store and SWIFT Official Store in Shopee, Lazada, and Swift Meat E-tindahan.

Small Steps You Can Take to Help Save Mother Earth

This Earth Day, learn to protect our planet and live more sustainably by purchasing products from Shopee's Shop Green sale

While not a major contributor to the global climate crisis, the Philippines is still part of the top 25% of low and middle income countries that produce significant greenhouse gas emissions. With Earth Day right around the corner—and carbon dioxide levels hitting an all-time high—it’s time to make a change.

Though there are larger entities that create a wider-scale impact, that doesn’t mean you can’t do your part to help curb the damage! The planet still needs a global solution in order to significantly reduce carbon emissions, but there are things that you can do on your own to lessen your ecological footprint.

First things first, educate yourself. They say knowledge is power. Before we can change the way we live, we need to understand why we need to do so. Read up and educate yourself on the consequences of the climate crisis on future generations and our individual and collective responsibilities. Share your knowledge when you can. This simple act can help us improve our relationship with Mother Earth.

Here are other tips that you can easily do at home:

Eat low on the food chain.

Red meat is one of the biggest contributors to harmful emissions. We know giving up steak forever is hard, but once in a while, try swapping out red meat and processed food for plant-based meat. Even better, consider alternatives such as fish, fruits, and vegetables. Aside from reducing your personal carbon footprint, you can enjoy a healthier diet! It’s also a great way to support our local farmers and fishermen.

Use eco-friendly household products.

Since most of us are quarantining at home, our household product consumption has increased. Unfortunately, many of these daily essentials, such as toothbrushes, shampoos, and cleaning materials, are made with toxic chemicals that harm the environment. Luckily, more brands have developed sustainable products that we can use as alternatives.

Plant your own garden

Many of us recently unleashed our inner plantitos and plantitas. It’s fun, therapeutic, and one of the best ways we can practice environmental stewardship! Your plant babies can help get rid of toxic air released by furniture and electronics. Growing an urban garden and eating your own vegetables can also help reduce the impact of transporting produce, which takes up a lot of energy. Growing and caring for your plants will benefit your overall physical and mental well-being, all while helping fight climate change.

Reduce consumption of single-use plastics.

Disposable utensils, straws, and plastic water bottles are convenient when you’re on the go, but they’re also bad for the environment. These single-use plastics all end up in landfills and waterways. However, the simple act of substituting these items with more sustainable options is already a big step towards positive change. Avoid using them and instead, purchase reusable products that can last you for years to come.

Shopee Supports Eco-Friendly Brands in Time for Earth Day

Shopee shares how Messy Bessy, Unilever, and Klean Kanteen Philippines advocate for a sustainable future through different initiatives

Every year, people celebrate Earth Day to raise global awareness and inspire millions of individuals to take action to protect the environment. As part of the international efforts to drive action among the community, Shopee, the leading e-commerce platform in Southeast Asia and Taiwan, launched Shop Green to encourage Filipinos to support sustainable products through Shop Green, an online sale from April 19 to 25.

In 2015, the General Assembly adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which listed responsible consumption and production, climate action, and sustainable cities and communities as part of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). However, most nations are still far from reaching these goals, with the Philippines ranked 99th out of the 166 countries in terms of progress towards achieving these objectives.

Committed to creating a sustainable future, brands like Klean Kanteen Philippines, Messy Bessy, and Unilever are pushing for sustainable operations and actively choosing to  use organic materials as steps towards building a better and healthier planet. Therefore, Shopee launched its Shop Green campaign to support these brands in their advocacy for a more sustainable and eco-friendly lifestyle.

Klean Kanteen Philippines

At Klean Kanteen Philippines, environmental responsibility is an ongoing journey that involves constant research on how to source better and more eco-friendly materials. The brand’s mission is to create durable, versatile, and affordable products for its consumers, and encourage the switch to drinking bottles that are more environmentally sustainable. Klean Kanteen Philippines saw Shopee’s extensive growth as a testament to the platform’s commitment to innovate and adapt to changing consumer needs. Through Shopee,  consumers can easily purchase their favorite Klean Kanteen bottles and join the movement to stop single-use habits.

According to Klean Kanteen Philippines, “We don't just make bottles. We create solutions for social change.  We work hard to design durable, versatile and affordable products that can last a lifetime and replace mountains of single-use waste. Our partnership with Shopee allows us to tell our story and start important conversations with more consumers.”

Klean Kanteen Philippines is committed to donating 1% of their annual sales to organizations they believe in every single year.

Messy Bessy

Messy Bessy is a line of plant-derived home and personal care products. The social enterprise aims to change the world, one sustainable product at a time. By developing eco-friendly products made from organic ingredients, the brand creates sustainable livelihoods for Filipino students, at-risk youths, and abused young adults to help stop the cycle of poverty. All of their products make use of cleaning agents that are found in nature, such as deriving ethyl alcohol from sugar cane. Their surface cleaners, all-purpose scrubs, and liquid detergents also do not have harmful chemicals.

The company is growing at a rapid pace and there is a demand for more convenient access to their products. By partnering with Shopee, Messy Bessy was able to reach more buyers nationwide, especially those looking for affordable, easily accessible, and effective environmentally friendly products.

Krie Reyes-Lopez, CEO and Founder of Messy Bessy, said, “We believe that being mindful of the environment and its sustainability is important. Partnering with Shopee truly helped us expand our e-commerce business and allowed us to reach people nationwide. With Shopee’s coin cashback and free shipping promotions, our clients find it easier to purchase our refill bottles and this allows us to use less plastic bottles. Currently, we have collection points in our Metro Manila kiosks for these bottles since we are able to recycle and reuse them.”

Unilever’s Love Beauty & Planet
In 2019, Unilever brought its Love Beauty & Planet initiative to the Philippines, in line with its commitment to do small acts of love to make consumers and the planet a little more beautiful, everyday. With Shopee, Unilever could reach more consumers, convincing them to be more eco-friendly and pro-planet with their products. Shop Green is aligned with Love Beauty & Planet’s purpose of enabling consumers to do more for themselves and the planet by providing a convenient platform to make more sustainable choices when purchasing products.

Isab Galang, Assistant Brand Manager for Love Beauty & Planet, Unilever Philippines, said, “Shop Green sheds light on how easy it can be to do more for the planet. Being a part of this campaign solidifies our brand’s commitment for a better, greener and more sustainable planet. Through this initiative, Love Beauty & Planet can reach more Filipinos and help them create #smallactsoflove with just one click.”

Shoppers can also look forward to brands like Forever 21, P&G’s Herbal Essences, and Colgate-Palmolive. To find out more about the campaign and to show your support for sustainable brands, visit  https://shopee.ph/m/shop-green from April 19 to 25, 2021.

5 common household items you can turn into cash
at any of the 60 SM malls nationwide especially on Earth Day

The challenges of climate change can only be addressed through the collective will and collaboration of every individual. Earth Day (not to be mistaken with Earth Hour) is upon us on Saturday, April 22, and SM Supermalls joins this worldwide celebration by inviting everyone to bring recylables or trash in exchange for cash at any of the 60 SM malls across the country.

While the Trash-to-Cash (TTC) campaign is observed every first Friday and Saturday of the month since 2007, being part of Earth Day will help raise much more awareness for this green program initiated by SM Cares on responsible solid waste management, especially in local communities.

Here is a list of recyclables that mall-goers can bring to their favorite SM mall’s Trash-to-Cash Recycling Market on April 22, 2017, Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and on every first Friday and Saturday of the month.

5 PET or plastic bottles

PET (polyethylene terephthalate) bottles are those made of plastic resin. These are commonly used for both food and non-food items because of their light weight, resilience, and recyclability. Examples are empty softdrinks and water bottles, shampoo or fabric conditioner containers, motor oil gallons, medicine/pills canisters, peanut butter PET jars, and any other recyclable plastic container.

4 Aluminum or tin cans

These are usually the containers of sardines, milk, softdrinks, fruit juices, pork and beans, and other canned food and drinks that we regularly buy from the grocery and supermarkets.

3 Old paper materials

These include worn-out books that are rendered unreadable, old newspapers, used carton boxes, magazines, brown paper bags, and other paper materials that you no longer need.

2 Glassware

These are drinking glasses, liquor and beer bottles, dinnerware, mason jars, food containers, as well as clear and colored bottles.

1 Metalware

These are pre-loved metal cookware and kitchen items, such as pots, pans, utensils, pie plates and trays, food containers, and metal beverage containers.

Prior to bringing used and unwanted recyclables to SM, interested environmental warriors and participants must make sure that all items are washed or clean.

ABOUT TRASH-TO-CASH

The Trash-to-Cash (TTC) is one of SM Cares’ environmental programs that aims to increase awareness on the importance of practicing proper waste disposal by minimizing or managing solid wastes with the engagement of the community/households.
