SAVE ME HOLLYWOOD : Coming Together

Changes are coming soon! Save Me Hollywood is a Filipino rock/alternative band based in Quezon City, Philippines. Formed only in 2011, the band is a collaboration between members of influential rock acts Chicosci and Typecast. Bassist Carlos Calderon of Chicosci and drummer Melvin Macatiag of Typecast are joined by April Morning Skies guitarists Aaron Corvera and Kenneth Aranza. Former MYX VJ and model Julz Savard is the lead singer of the group.
Having been friends in the local music scene, the members of Chicosci, Typecast, and April Morning Skies have always discussed the prospect of forming a new band together. Calderon, Macatiag, Corvera and Aranza who have, at one point, jammed together and entertained the idea of working on a new project with each other. Savard was the missing piece the boys were looking for.

Despite only being together for a couple of years, the band has already achieved modest success in both the local and international music scene. Save Me Hollywood has been featured in several publications such as Pulp, Chalk and Meg Magazine. Apart from the usual gigs in Manila’s rock dives and schools, Save Me Hollywood has already performed for various events and concerts by ABS-CBN, MYX and Channel V and several international clothing companies such as Vans and Dr. Martens. Most notably, the band was part of Bazooka Rocks festival last August 2013. They performed alongside popular American acts like All Time Low, Red Jumpsuit Apparatus and Anberlin. In June 2013, Save Me Hollywood was given the chance to share the stage with Southeast Asia’s biggest artists as part of the Baybeats festival in Singapore.

Behind The Curtain

Bassist Calde Calderon is among the founding members of local rock group, Chicosci. Formed back in 2000 as an after-school get-together, the band has enjoyed continued success in the music scene - releasing 6 studio albums, garnering several music awards and ceaselessly touring the Philippines and the Southeast Asia. His successes with Chicosci include 2 NU 107 Rock Awards Bassist of the Year nominations, several MYX Music Awards for Best Video and Best Rock Videos as well as NU Rock Awards for Song of the Year and Listener’s Choice. Perhaps his biggest accolade is winning the Favorite Artist - Philippines award with Chicosci in the 2008 MTV Asia Awards in Malaysia. Calde was also part of another supergroup, Project One, which spawned the hit single and Coke anthem “Ang Sarap Dito”.

Drummer Melvin Macatiag is another seasoned veteran in the local rock scene. As part of the Laguna-bred Typecast, he is among the country’s premiere drummers with 3 NU Rock Awards Drummer of the Year Nominations. As MySpace’s Top Artist in Southeast Asia, Typecast has toured countries like Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia. After releasing their second studio album, Every Moss and Cobweb in 2007, the band broke into the local mainstream with the single, "Will You Ever Learn". Winning Best Song of the Year at the 2007 NU Rock Awards, their success eventually led to the opportunity to open for American bands such as Thursday, Good Charlotte, Saosin, Anberlin, All Time Low, Dashboard Confessional, The Used, Cobra Starship and Taking Back Sunday. Fresh from their 2012 US Tour, the band is still touring and promoting their latest release, “How Your Influence Betrays You”.

Guitarist (and chief songwriter) Aaron Corvera and Kenneth Aranza are part of underground heavyweights, April Morning Skies. Among the country’s top up-and-coming rock bands, AMS is a product of metal, punk, melodic-post hardcore music. Their debut release, “In Darker Days Ahead”, has impressed critics and earned them Best New Artist nomination in the 2009 MYX Music Awards. AMS has consistently wowed crowds all over the country, as well as those from Singapore and Malaysia. Recently making a comeback after a year-long hiatus, the band has begun touring again and has also returned to their roots as pioneers of the revered Moshpit Sundays production.

Singer (and lyricist) Julz Savard is the youngest, not just of actual age, but of experience in the music industry. Working as a model at a very young age, she has only the heart of a musician and is dead-set on making a mark in the local music industry. Previously trying out her luck with local bands in her hometown of Mabalacat, Pampanga, Julz has always wanted to sing and perform. When she won the 2010 MYX VJ Search, Savard met Calderon during his work at the music channel. That’s when Save Me Hollywood found its final piece: the doe-eyed 21-year-old with a powerful voice and a commanding stage presence. She still continues with her modeling career, having been named the MEG Magazine Style Ambassador in 2012. She briefly had a stint on a radio as DJ at JAM 88.3 and host of the daily morning show, “The Morning Breath”.

Now

The band released their debut record, Your Story To Tell, under 12 Stone Records in June 2013 at Eastwood Central Plaza. The latest single, “High”, broken into the Top 10 of both radio and music channel charts, peaking at number 7 of the MYX Countdown. The earlier single, “Reckless”, also reached the music channel’s Top 20 countdown.

The band is currently on tour, promoting their latest single, “Changes”. Check them out on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Social Networks as Facebook and Youtube ban OPM band’s video for being “inappropriate”

TEEN BAND Line of 7 has created a stir on various social media channels this week after it released online a music video that did not leave anything to the imagination.

The risqué promotional video for the group’s debut single “Langit” has been banned a few times on Facebook and Youtube after concerned netizens reported the video for being “inappropriate” because of its frontal nudity and breasts exposure contents.
“Langit” instantly became the trending subject on the Facebook and Twitter only hours after its release. While many found the music video entertaining because of its sex-comedy genre, some found it offensive.
“Our music video depicts the sexual fantasies of male Filipino teens on their remedial class teacher. It is the first of its kind in the Philippines,” says Line of 7 lead guitarist and second vocalist Alex Dieudonne.
“We wanted to be truthful and realistic in showing what really goes on in the minds of our fellow male teens. It isn’t intended to be pornographic—perhaps, just a little naughty—that’s why we think that it doesn’t deserve to be taken out of Facebook and Youtube,” he adds.
Composed of vocalist Argee Golding, bassist Seth Torralba, and drummer Matt Ong, and Dieudonne, Line of 7 represents the sentiments of the free-spirited, fun-loving and carefree Filipino youths of today. The band’s name, Line of 7, cleverly appeals to students who receive barely passing grades.

Independent actress Lang Sky took the challenge as the seductive high school teacher in the music video directed by Ace Villena and produced by the band manager Chris Cahilig. Meanwhile, the song “Langit” was composed by Urie Tesorio. It became the “Most Wanted Song” in 97.1 Barangay LS.

According to Ong, the “more wholesome” version of the controversial music video can still be viewed on Youtube while the censored version found its way to various sexually charged websites, including popular porn sites.

Line of 7 is managed by Chris Cahilig.

Silent Sanctuary's new album “MONODRAMATIC” transcend emotions of love, loss and everything in between

Silent Sanctuary is a 5-member Filipino band have entered the OPM (Original Pilipino Music) scene in 2006 with their songs “Rebound”, “Ikaw Lamang”, “Summer Song”, “Kundiman”, and “Ingat ka”. From this band that gave you these hit songs comes their 4th studio album “MONODRAMATIC”.
Released by Ivory Music  & Video, Silent Sanctuary maintain their classically-influenced-rock sound with their new single “BUMALIK KA NA SA’KIN” and their previously released single “PAALAM” which could well be anthems for ex-lovers and hopeless romantics.

As a growing band, they experimented in their music by mixing in classical instruments to make a unique sound, “Gusto namin maramdaman ng listeners yung kung ano din ang mga naramdaman namin sa mga kanta.”

Composed of Sarkie Sarangay on vocals and guitars, Chino David on violin, Anjo Inacay on cello, Jason Rondero on bass and Allen Calixto on drums, Silent Sanctuary spices up their signature “classical music meets rock music” sound with the release of their new album called “Monodramatic”.
The group’s previous studio albums, Fuschiang Pag-ibig and Mistaken for Granted, proved to be a success as it both spawned hits, which dominated radio, TV, online and various music charts. For this album, Silent Sanctuary delivers a more flavorful spice without deviating much from the distinct, classic sound which was loved by many, “Marami kaming ginamit na instruments sound, and elements na di pa namin ginagamit sa mga dating album,” explains vocalist Sarkie Sarangay.
“We always want to top our previous work. Yung habang mas tumatagal mas gumaganda yung mga kanta,” adding, “gusto namin lagi masulit ng listeners yung album kaya di pedeng basta-bastang output lang,” shares bassist Jason Rondero. For drummer Allen Calixto, the whole album was a way to be able to evolve and develop their sound rather than sticking with the same traditional formulas for songwriting, “Lumawak pa yung isip ko sa music, kasama dun re-learning yung drums.”

The current hit single “Bumalik Ka Na Sa ‘Kin” gives us a sneak peak of what’s in-store for everyone who’ll get a copy of album. This upbeat pop-rock song with a captivating chorus will surely occupy your mind incessantly and leave you subconsciously humming which gives a perfect balance as the lyrics express an earnest desire to get back together with a significant other. The album also features an interesting collaboration with Ashley Gosiengfiao of Midnight Meetings entitled “Meron Nang Iba”.
Violinist Chino David has pointed out that they’ve worked extensively on the songwriting and production to deliver a worthwhile listening experience to their fans, “Iba yung treatment namin sa album nato. Maraming dinaanang revisions at pagpili sa material.” With strong melodic hooks as well as harmonic surprises, listeners will surely be glued to their speakers. “Yung vision, mag-enjoy yung mga listeners tulad ng pagka-enjoy namin habang ginagawa yung album,” shares cellist Anjo Inacay.

‘Monodramatic’ pushes the boundaries of what Silent Sanctuary has done previously and will surely transcend emotions of love, loss and everything in between.

Jason Fernandez makes TV acting debut

Former Rivermaya frontman Jason Fernandez makes TV acting debut.

In previous interviews, former Rivermaya frontman Jason Fernandez admitted being abandoned by his Cypriot father at a young age. In fact, after his stint in the band, he flew to Cyprus to meet his father.

This Holy Week, Jason was tapped by CBN Asia to be one of the lead stars of their Good Friday presentation – Tanikala presents Ama Namin, which also stars Mike Tan, Diva Montalba, and Tricia Amper. It will air this March 29, 5 p.m., on GMA 7.
Jason can very well relate to his role Arthur, an artist whose father had to leave him to work abroad when he was very young.

“The role is something very close to home,” adds Jason. “I hope people will be blessed, and inspired with this special Lenten Presentation.”

The episode talks about the lives of three friends whose lives were greatly affected by their respective relationships with their fathers.
Ama Namin is written by Icko Gonzales, Don Gonzales and Gin Sardea and is directed by Icko Gonzales, John Valdez-Tan, and Derrek Adapon.

Rivermaya returns in the local recording scene with Panatang Makabanda

Iconic and multi-platinum-selling band Rivermaya makes a local recording scene comeback with the much-awaited release of their album Panatang Makabanda, under Universal Records. The album is their first in four years and their first with Universal Records.

Rivermaya is now composed of Mark Escueta, Norby David, Mike Elgar and Ryan Peralta.
Rivermaya joins the label’s elite roster of bands – Parokya Ni Edgar, Kamikazee, Sponge Cola, Calla Lily, among others.

“It's really a great honor for us, not only to become part of such a high-calibre roster, but to be given the chance to work with a company that has always championed the Filipino artist. It took a few weeks for it to really sink in. Di kami makapaniwala,”says Mark. “Finally, we're ‘home.’”

The album’s single Pilipinas, Kailan Ka Magigising, penned by founding Rivermaya member Mark Escueta, is reminder to everyone to go against crab mentality, and selfishness, especially now that another elections is within the horizon once again.

When asked how the single was chosen among the tracks recorded for the forthcoming Panatang Makabanda album, drummer-turned-guitarist Mark quips, “In the early stages of recording, this song became the initial favorite of the group. It's also a fun song to play live. Maganda yung message ng kanta and very timely rin since election time nanaman tayo."

Norby adds, "Hopefully our new record can take the fans to a whole new level and attract more new listeners to our songs and stories. We are all excited for what each of us can bring to the table, and soon to your ears."

When asked to sum up his Rivermaya journey from 1993 to 2013 founding member Mark says:

“One of my firm beliefs is that the best part about being a musician is the PROCESS. If you enjoy the process then all your gigs, songs and albums will be celebrations after a great day at the ‘dream office.’ If the process is messed up, many things can go wrong and it can even end up as a painful experience. It has to be good for everybody, not just one or two. Few people know, and I’m sure a lot of my fellow musicians will agree, that one of the most important things that keeps a band going is something that is not so musical in nature. It’s called laughter. A band that laughs together, stays together. Diyan mayaman ang Rivermaya ngayon, tawanan, pagkakaibigan at bagong musika.”

This is one of my favorite songs of The Fray!

Step one you say we need to talk

He walks you say sit down it's just a talk
He smiles politely back at you
You stare politely right on through
Some sort of window to your right
As he goes left and you stay right
Between the lines of fear and blame
And you begin to wonder why you came

Where did I go wrong, I lost a friend
Somewhere along in the bitterness
And I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life

Let him know that you know best
Cause after all you do know best
Try to slip past his defense
Without granting innocence
Lay down a list of what is wrong
The things you've told him all along
And pray to God, he hears you
And pray to God, he hears you

Where did I go wrong, I lost a friend
Somewhere along in the bitterness
And I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life

As he begins to raise his voice
You lower yours and grant him one last choice
Drive until you lose the road
Or break with the ones you've followed
He will do one of two things
He will admit to everything
Or he'll say he's just not the same
And you begin to wonder why you came

Where did I go wrong, I lost a friend
Somewhere along in the bitterness
And I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life

Where did I go wrong, I lost a friend
Somewhere along in the bitterness
And I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life

How to save a life

How to save a life

Where did I go wrong, I lost a friend
Somewhere along in the bitterness
And I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life

Where did I go wrong, I lost a friend
Somewhere along in the bitterness
And I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life
How to save a life

How to save a life

This band knew how to save a life; with genuinely written songs that tug at every heart string, they were able to connect with people and on a few occasions might have saved someone’s life through their heartfelt songs. Prepare for a celebration of love, sorrow and life asTHE FRAY gives Manila a one night of auditory pleasure.
Formed in 2002, American pop rock band from Denver, Colorado started as a worship band and was initially composed of Isaac Slade and Joe King then joined later on by Dave Welsh and Ben Wysocki. They made waves in 2005 with their breakthrough single “How To Save A Life”. The single reached Top 3 in the Billboards Hot 100 and was certified double platinum by RIAA. The album,How To Save A Life, where the same titled song came from also brought forth the hit “Over My Head (Cable Car)”. The band was then nominated for Grammy Awards for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or a Group and Best Rock Performance by a Duo or a Group in 2007. These singles propelled the band into commercial success and international recognition.
“How To Save a Life” was featured in the hit TV Series Grey’s Anatomy and Scrubs, making it one of the most played and widely recognized song in that 2006-2007. The song’s inspired lyrics came from an encounter Isaac Slade had with a boy with drug problems and realizing that all the boy need was support from his friends and family.  People related so well with the song it opened up variety of interpretations, all in all, the song was able to touched the hearts of many and thus solidify The Fray’s ability to reach out to their audiences at a deeper level.
Their single “You Found Me” from their self titled sophomore album The Fray, debuted at #28 at the Hot 100 and peaked at #7. “Never Say Never” also from their second album was featured in the movie Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen, allowing them to increase their loyal fan following worldwide. With the release of their latest single the upbeat and ear friendly “Heartbeat” from their latest album Scars and Stories, The Fray once again displayed   the emotional side of rock and their ability to connect to people.
The Fray’s musical approach is composed of piano driven, mid tempo tunes with a laidback feel. Their music is easy to listen to and the lyrics are highly relatable and heartfelt. Some compared the band to the likes of Coldplay and Keane primarily because of the piano driven tracks that leads into power ballads, though they cited The Wallflowers, Counting Crows and U2 as few of their influences.  Isaac Slade vocal style gave The Fray the distinction it deserves.  The band’s ability to render poetic, moving and sincere words into their songs is their strongest point, that and never lacking in melody and catchy hooks.
