Top Talents to Tech Leaders: The Key to Sustained E-Commerce Growth

Shopee invites all aspiring tech leaders to join the Global Leaders Program to experience in-depth training and mentorship to help drive the growth of e-commerce in the Philippines

E-commerce platforms continue to strengthen their foundation in the global retail market with constant innovation and improvements in the consumers’ overall online shopping experience. Along with the immense demand for quality products and services, there is also a great need for tech talents who will drive the growth of e-commerce locally and internationally. The value of e-commerce in Southeast Asia is projected to reach US$132 billion by the end of 2021, and in five years, the Philippines’ e-commerce value will grow by 3.8X.

Shopee, the leading e-commerce platform in Southeast Asia and Taiwan, equips young and high-potential talent with immersive training and in-depth mentorships through its Global Leaders Program (GLP).

The Shopee Global Leaders Program is a 2-year graduate program consisting of four 6-month local and overseas rotations designed for highly enthusiastic and ambitious young Filipino talents. Participants will help drive Shopee’s campaigns and new initiatives by working with local and overseas teams. They will gain eye-opening experiences, regional exposure and contribute to the expansion of Shopee across the region. Outstanding final-year students or fresh graduates with up to 2-years of working experience can qualify for GLP and will be part of a structured learning and development program. They will also receive dedicated mentorship from Shopee leaders.

Martin Yu, Director at Shopee Philippines, said, “With the demand for tech talents significantly rising, Shopee will continue to equip and nurture aspiring tech leaders through various training and internships like the Global Leaders Program. With this, Shopee is inviting those who are eager to learn to join the program. We are looking forward to the next batch of participants who will greatly contribute to the future of e-commerce in the region and in the international landscape.”

Participants of GLP shared how they gained significant professional and personal growth, which will help them excel in their careers in the e-commerce industry.

For Jan, the GLP is a holistic learning experience. “I love how diverse the possible rotations are and the opportunity for regional exposure is definitely a bonus. The program definitely builds your business acumen and widens your perspective on e-commerce as a whole. GLP is a great training ground to become a better problem solver. Not only do we get to analyze and solve real business problems, there are also many resources available to us. I personally enjoy the GLP training and gatherings wherein we get to hear from GLPs from other countries,” Jan shared.

Lance, on the other hand, sees GLP as an informative learning experience that opened his eyes to the industry’s broader spectrum. “I’ve always been interested in technology and startups, especially startups that create a new business model and innovation that is grounded on a new perspective or set of values. I wanted to join GLP because I felt it was a great opportunity to develop key leadership and problem-solving skills, while also getting exposure to tech-related businesses and the world of startups,” Lance added.

Both Jan and Lance are still currently enrolled in the program and consider it as an opportunity to hone their skills and understand the industry better. “If you are looking for strategic exposure and impactful work, apply to Shopee’s GLP. It is definitely a unique training experience that exposes you to highly skilled mentors, all the way to challenging and enriching projects,” Jan explained.

“If you find yourself interested and excited with roles that require business and problem-solving skills, then GLP is a great choice. Read up on the program details on the Shopee website and if you find yourself excited or curious about the rotations and challenges in e-commerce, then you should give it a shot,” Lance shared.

Are you an aspiring tech leader and interested in learning about the e-commerce industry? The application is open until October 30, 2021.

According to Linkedin, tech roles make up the majority of “emerging jobs” in the region, with robotics engineer, cyber security specialist, and javascript developer roles making the job trend list.

Shopee, the leading e-commerce platform in Southeast Asia and Taiwan, prepares and nurtures students and professionals for the digital landscape through its various talent development initiatives.  “Even though the entire program was held virtually, Shopee translated their work culture online which is a great factor in my whole experience as an apprentice. I learned a lot from my mentors and also improved my skills in terms of presentation, time management, and communication. The program encouraged me to step up and be more confident to drive better results with what I do. I am glad a lot of people supported me throughout my whole Shopee journey,” Kyla shared.

Lance, another Shopee Apprentice Program participant, said that his experience was eye-opening, improved his problem-solving skills, and helped him understand the industry better. He worked with the People Team and displayed exemplary standing not only when it comes to his studies but also with his work at Shopee. “With Shopee, I learned how to look at a multifaceted problem, break it down into its constituent parts, and build it back together to form a comprehensive, results-driven strategy. With this mindset, I was able to drive concrete impact by implementing workable solutions that will help drive the business forward.”

After finishing the program, Kyla highly recommends other individuals check out the program for growth and new learnings. “For those who want a career in e-commerce and tech, the Shopee Apprentice Program can definitely equip you with the necessary skills through their mentorships, training, and projects. Shopee Launches Shopee Thursdays with the Department of Trade and Industry to Help MSMEs Thrive in the E-commerce Space

As e-commerce takes on greater importance for both consumers and sellers, Shopee, the leading e-commerce platform in Southeast Asia and Taiwan, partners with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to offer in-depth discussions about online selling to support the growth of online businesses through Shopee Thursdays. These masterclass sessions aim to equip existing and aspiring online entrepreneurs with the right tools and information on how to use data to operate effectively in the e-commerce space.

E-commerce is considered a crucial part of the global retail framework. When the pandemic hit, its role became even more critical as physical businesses closed and people were encouraged to stay at home for safety reasons. With the implementation of lockdown measures, more than 65 percent of business establishments had to close temporarily, and only 29 percent of enterprises remained open with limited operations. This led to people turning to online platforms to shop for their needs and entrepreneurs to shift to digital platforms to sustain their businesses

Martin Yu, Director at Shopee Philippines, said, “Shopee is excited to partner with the Department of Trade and Industry to equip MSMEs with proper knowledge and skills to thrive in the e-commerce space through Shopee Thursdays. As many entrepreneurs transition to online platforms like Shopee, it is important that they learn the basics of online selling and to maximize the e-commerce space to its full potential. We will continue to collaborate with DTI to support MSMEs in their e-commerce journey to success.”

Jean Pacheco, Assistant Secretary at the Department of Trade and Industry, said, “At DTI, we believe that every business is essential for the Philippine economy to prosper, and that is why it is our goal to support them in any way possible. With leading marketplace platforms like Shopee, we can reach more people who want to expand their business and learn more about e-commerce. It is an honor for us to work with a company that prioritizes the local community and we will keep on partnering with organizations like Shopee, to uplift Filipino entrepreneurs.”

Sellers can learn essential tips on how they can expand their businesses on Shopee in the upcoming sessions. On June 17, entrepreneurs will understand and learn how to better manage shop operations, inventory, warehouse processes, and employees. On June 24, the masterclass session will focus on the potential of data and how entrepreneurs can use it to improve their shop’s performance.

Shopee, the leading e-commerce platform in Southeast Asia and Taiwan, launches its annual 11.11 - 12.12 Big Christmas Sale. It comes off the back of its successful 9.9 and 10.10 shopping events, reflecting the continued growth of e-commerce in the region. This 11.11 - 12.12, Shopee further commits to uplifting communities, generating new opportunities for sellers and brands, and designing stronger shared experiences for shoppers, all as part of its broader vision to make e-commerce for everyone.

Shopee sets out to create impact, opportunities, and shared experiences, as part of its efforts to ensure that all consumers and businesses benefit from e-commerce growth

Here’s how Shopee plans to step up its support for communities, businesses, and consumers this 11.11 - 12.12 and beyond.

1. Creating impact for communitie

Leveraging the digital ecosystem to support those in need

Shopee deepens its commitment to uplifting local communities with the launch of the 11.11 Big Charity Drive. This will occur in each of Shopee’s Southeast Asian markets, supported by trusted social organizations, top celebrities, and the biggest brands in Southeast Asia. The charity drive aims to raise awareness and donations for underprivileged children in the region. Shopee believes that all individuals, particularly the youth, should have the opportunity to succeed in the future digital economy.

In the Philippines, Shopee launches Shopee Bayanihan: Pamaskong Pambata with 11 of the most trusted foundations in the country, including Mano Amiga Philippines; World Vision Philippines; Young Focus for Education and Development Foundation, Inc.; Fundlife International, Inc.; GMA Kapuso Foundation, Inc.; Save the Children Philippines; Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Philippines, Inc.; Project Pearls, Inc.; Project Smile Philippines; Kythe Foundation, Inc.; and PGH Medical Foundation, Inc. Users can donate by purchasing donation vouchers and goods from partner brands’ CSR collections and co-branded live streams. Participating brands will donate a percentage of their sales to their foundation of choice.

2. Creating opportunities for all businesses

Unlocking e-commerce for sellers, small and medium enterprises (SMEs), and brands

The growth of e-commerce in Southeast Asia and Taiwan has created new opportunities for sellers, SMEs, and brands. This trend is reflected in Shopee, as the number of sellers on the platform increased by 60% year-on-year .

This has created greater diversity in the region’s e-commerce landscape, with aspiring and experienced sellers alike seeking to grow their businesses online. This means that there is no one-size-fits-all approach, as sellers face unique challenges at different stages of their digital journey. Shopee has widened its spectrum of support measures to help all sellers succeed, regardless of experience and size:

Helping new and existing sellers cope with a global pandemic: Over 300,000 sellers, SMEs, and entrepreneurs in the region signed up for Shopee’s Seller Support Package within the first month of launch in April. New sellers also enjoyed 6x sales growth during Shopee’s 9.9 Super Shopping Day in September.

Upgrading Shopee University to empower diverse groups of local sellers: Shopee has enhanced its Shopee University program, including digitalizing the curriculum and widening its online Seller Education Hub so that all sellers can level up their e-commerce skills. Recently, Shopee also partnered with Visa, USAID, Globe myBusiness, and the Quezon City local government unit to equip sellers with the financial, marketing, and e-commerce knowledge needed to succeed in the digital economy.

Seller Masterclasses drive sellers to adopt new tools, adapt to new trends: In the Philippines, Shopee introduced its Seller Masterclass to help sellers leverage the benefits of livestreaming better. Popular streamers such as ClosetbyNikka2600, MyOutfitGallery, and cilebritee_shop shared exclusive tips for reaching more customers on Shopee Live.

Shopee also helped local and international brands connect and engage with the region’s digital-first shoppers. In 2020, Shopee co-created 600 Super Brand Days with top companies such as Disney, Samsung, and L’Oreal, who looked forward to growing their online presence and sales. The recent 10.10 Brands Festival also generated strong traction for brand partners, as traffic on Shopee Mall surged 2.5x the daily average.

3. Creating shared experiences

Forging communities, reinventing social shopping on Shopee

Shopee will continue to connect, inform, and inspire consumers across the region. Users can explore similar interests and discover better deals through Shopee’s shopping communities, while enjoying a more social shopping experience with Shopee’s enhanced in-app features.

Shopee connects like-minded consumers and caters to their online needs through communities such as Shopee’s Mom’s Club. Its over 1.5 million members enjoy one-stop access to top global brands for baby products, including Pampers, Enfa, and Nestle, as well as exclusive parenting content from mothers and experts.

For the new generation of digital luxury consumers, Shopee recently launched Shopee Premium, an exclusive destination offering direct access to authentic premium products, while allowing consumers to understand the brands more.

Shopee also enhanced its collection of popular in-app features to make online shopping even more social, fun, and rewarding:

Enhanced social features: Shopee has upgraded its iconic in-app features to better connect sellers, brands, and users during the 11.11 - 12.12 Big Christmas Sale. New auction and polling features on Shopee Live will make the live shopping experience even more engaging. Shopee Feed has also been upgraded with live video “Stories” for real-time engagement between users.

Yu closed, “Shopee 11.11 Big Sale is our way of transforming a global phenomenon into one that truly belongs to our region. It continues the strong momentum of our successful 9.9 and 10.10 events, and builds on our long-term vision to transform the lives of people and businesses we serve. Toby’s Sports Launches “We Got This” Campaign and E-commerce Site

Philippine Sports Heritage Brand Strengthens Customer Relationship with New Rally Cry and 24/7 Online Store

Complementing its new “We Got This” campaign, Toby’s Sports also launched its e-commerce site in support of every individual, athlete or not, in their goal to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle.

Toby’s Sports, the largest multi-brand sports retailer in the Philippines, today unveiled a national campaign that underlines its aggressive pursuit to promote sports and an active lifestyle. The retail chain also officially launched its e-commerce site, a testament to its commitment to providing the best shopping experience to its customers, further solidifying its place as the sports retailer of choice for Filipinos.

With its new “We Got This” campaign, Toby’s Sports enjoins everyone to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle whatever sports you are into.

The new campaign, titled “We Got This,” highlights an individual’s journey to achieve success in whatever sport or fitness activity he takes on. This journey is made visual in the campaign’s centerpiece, a video that examines the mental and physical hardships—from an aching, calloused body to a state of frustration and self-doubt—upon which every success story is written. The compelling video, which has already broken through digital channels and can be viewed at https://t.co/6tslkwXypK, provides inspiration to anyone who is planning to take on a similar journey.

It takes a great deal of work in achieving that perfect body and active lifestyle, but Toby’s Sports “We Got This” campaign wants every individual to know that rest, focus, and dedication are just as important.

“When you take on a new challenge or set a new goal for yourself in the realm of sports and fitness, you undergo several hurdles that make you want to give up. #WeGotThis is our rally cry to keep them going; to let them know that as the leader in the sports industry, Toby’s Sports is not just here to provide them with the right gear, but to also give them the support they need to succeed. Simply put, we have their backs every step of the way,” said Toby Claudio, President of Quorum International Inc., the parent company of Toby’s Sports.

Nearing its 40th year in business, Toby’s Sports has become more than just a store, continuously building itself as an ally in fitness and sports for its millions of customers. It prides itself in having the widest selection of products in the industry, carrying a well-curated line-up of the latest footwear, apparel and equipment from the world's best brands, plus a wide portfolio of its own in-house brands that combine performance with value. This is complemented by a team of sports enthusiasts and specialists that are more than willing to share their expertise to anyone who walks inside any of its stores. Toby’s Sports also plans to actively provide its customers with opportunities where they can achieve their sports and fitness aspirations by partnering with other organizations, coaches and trainers that are dedicated to improving people’s lives through fitness.

The new “We Got This” campaign takes everyone—not just sports enthusiasts—to task to set new goals for themselves in the field of health and fitness.

Rest if you must but never quit—this is one of the core messages of Toby’s Sports new “We Got This” campaign.

Whether into basketball or not, Toby’s Sports “We Got This” campaign will make one realize that there is no excuse not to get physically fit and healthy.

New e-commerce site brings Toby’s Sports closer to its customers

True to its commitment to strengthening the relationship with its customers, Toby’s Sports is extending the shopping experience well beyond mall hours with www.tobys.com – the retail chain’s e-commerce store. The new online store adds dimension to Toby’s Sports’ retail presence and distribution strategy in the country, serving as an online storefront for its ever-expanding range of products and brands, offering deals that may not be available in the physical stores. Customers can browse through product information and photos, and shop unique sizes without having to go from store to store. Customers can also enjoy the convenience of dropping off return packages via the nearest Toby’s Sports store or LBC branch.

Boxing is one of the most tedious sports, but Toby’s Sports “We Got This” campaign encourages boxers, athletes, and every individual out there to pursue a healthy and active lifestyle no matter how exhausting it can be.

Toby’s Sports new “We Got This” video campaign highlight not only one’s physical hardships but also examines one’s mental journey to a hard-earned fitness.

With its new “We Got This” campaign, Toby’s Sports encourages everyone to hold on to that rope a little tighter and not give up on their goals of achieving an active and healthy lifestyle.

“Our e-commerce platform was completely revamped in October 2016, and we have since added multiple services to allow for a more convenient shopping experience. Officially introducing the site at the same time as the new campaign really brings the message home for us—that our dedication to our customers is unparalleled,” Claudio quipped.

“With this new online store, we can now cater to their sports and fitness needs 24/7, and expand our reach to consumers located in areas in the Philippines that currently have no access to a Toby’s Sports physical store,” he concluded.

Toby’s Sports “We Got This” campaign tells that it takes a great deal of focus, willingness, and persistence to achieve that coveted fitness and healthy lifestyle.

There is no such thing as a great roadblock if one’s mind is set in swimming one’s way to greatness and fitness—this is one of the core messages of Toby’s Sports “We Got This” campaign.

In line with the new campaign, Toby’s Sports’ online store will be giving away limited edition #WeGotThis statement shirts to its first 100 customers today. The new campaign will be rolled out in phases with several planned activations throughout the year, with the #WeGotThis storytelling continuing at brand events, retail touch points, and various digital channels.

According to Undersecretary Louis Casambre of the DOST-ICT Office, with the new project Terms of Reference, free Wi-Fi will be made available to public parks, public schools and libraries, government hospitals and rural health units, transport terminals, national and local government offices.

“Any increase in Internet connectivity through Free Wi-Fi Internet Access in Public Places will jump start economic development by giving access to e-Commerce, e-Learning, and e-Government tools to beneficiaries…” Casambre said.

These can increase their incomes and pushing their economic status upwards across the nation, especially those belonging in the countryside.

The DOST-ICT Office release also cited the World Bank study that indicated every 10 percent increase in broadband connectivity results in a 1.38 percent increase in Gross Domestic Product.
