‘There’s Something Primal About Water and Rebirth’: Lead Writer Peter McTighe on The Rising’s Powerful Opening Scene

What would it be like to live in a different plane of existence? Watch Neve Kelly (Clara Rugaard) navigate through this exact horrifying predicament in The Rising, an 8-part British crime drama with a supernatural twist. Neve uses her newfound paranormal abilities to seek justice and catch her killer. But as she digs deeper into her life, buried secrets start to rise, and Neve — along with the audience — starts to piece together clues to the puzzle of her murder.

Dive into the world of The Rising as its creators and actors talk more about filming the supernatural murder mystery series

Buzzing with excitement for the whole world to enjoy their masterpiece, the show’s lead writer and executive producer share why they chose to film in the chilly mountains of England’s Lake District and what made them decide on the show’s powerful opening scene.

Talking about why they picked the Lake District as the show’s setting, Julian Stevens, executive producer, said, The Lake District is this ancient space that has this sense of isolation that we wanted to portray in this. The exterior locations are a combination of the Lake District and the Peak District. It gives us this sense of epic scale and enclosure, that sense of the mountains surrounding you and you feeling very tiny in that landscape. That’s what we tried to capture in that opening scene how much of a little dot Neve would be in the lake and how terrifying it would be to find yourself in that situation.

Asked if the story’s powerful opening sequence of Neve floating in the lake was planned from the beginning, lead writer and executive producer Peter McTighe said, “Yes, it was there from the beginning. There is something primal about water and rebirth. I wanted the show to be anchored by the environment and the elements. The Lake District and the Peak District where we shot play a huge part in setting the mood and tone much like Twin Peaks did back in the day – the way that David Lynch and Mark Frost used that landscape is so evocative.”

Looking back to when they filmed the show, The Rising’s lead cast recall filming in the freezing water and how the show’s setting made an impact on them as actors.

Lead actress Clara Rugaard who plays Neve Kelly and who spent the most time submerged in the lake, recounts her experience and said, “Ooh, bit nippy. I mean it was fun. It’s fun to complain in the moment because it was freezing and my lips were blue but you come away with such amazing experiences. I would never have done that had I not had to. It was invigorating. I do take cold showers from time to time now after that because of the whole Wim Hof idea. But it was freezing.”

Solly McLeod who plays Joseph Wyatt, Neve Kelly’s boyfriend, also talked about his fair share of wading in the freezing water: “It was really good fun, but it was cold. It was the first day of filming for me. I was literally thrown in the deep end of a 50 ft to100 ft deep lake. That was probably just what I needed. Any nervousness I had was washed away by this ice cold water. It was super-hard-hitting, super-emotional. So to get that out of the way and be around all the other cast was really good. I was so immersed in it.”

-----------------------------------------------------------

Official synopsis: Neve Kelly (Clara Rugaard) is dead. Understandably, she’s scared and confused by this new (non) existence, but moreover, when she realizes she has been murdered, she’s furious. Determined to find her killer and get justice, she takes advantage of her new supernatural abilities to investigate her own death. In doing so, she uncovers deeply buried secrets and is forced to re-examine everything about her life and the people she cared about.

The World Loves K-Romance And We Have Six New Series to Make Your Heart Beat Faster

If you have been swept off your feet by the unconventional love story in Crash Landing on You, or melted at the first stirrings of connection in Extraordinary Attorney Woo and Business Proposal, then brace yourselves for a heartbeat-skipping announcement.

Audiences worldwide have been growing fonder of K-Romance, and this affection shows no signs of fading. Between 2018 to 2022, global viewership of Netflix’s K-Romance titles tripled. In 2022 alone, more than 90 per cent of this viewing came from outside South Korea.

We’re moved by the affection, and we’re eager to return it in kind. As the home for compelling K-Romance, Netflix will be introducing six new Korean romance series over the upcoming five months.

For decades, this genre has captivated audiences in Korea and throughout Asia, a testament to the storytelling prowess and production expertise of gifted Korean content creators, observes Don Kang, Vice President of Content (Korea). “We’re genuinely humbled by how our emotive Korean shows have found a home in the hearts of global audiences through Netflix, stretching from the U.S., Europe, South America, and beyond. Our stories touch on the universal aspects of life - love, heartbreak, and tenderness, while also providing a peek into the unique facets of Korean culture. Netflix's commitment to forging this profound global connection is something we're truly excited about.”

“Creators have dedicated themselves to painting the delicate dynamics and evolving emotions of our characters,” adds Wooyeon Yang, Director of Content (Korea). The crafting of the hallmark slow-burning intensity of K-romances, along with their wholesome appeal, shapes an undeniably “endearing genre that strikes a chord with global viewers”, she believes.

Netflix’s investment in subtitling and dubbing has been instrumental in expanding the K-Romance audiences. “The impact has been more profound than we ever imagined,” shares Yang. “Despite the diversity of languages, the common thread of understanding and accessing Korean content seems to be a key strength that has set Netflix as a trendsetter.” Yang underscores the value of dubbing, noting that “listening to dialogues in their own languages helps K-Romance resonate more deeply with viewers worldwide”.

Continuing the world's love for this genre, Netflix’s upcoming K-Romance shows will each have their own distinct features. Here’s a sneak peek at what these new shows have to tell.

See You in My 19th Life (premiering June 17)
Enchanting Heroine Meets Heart-stirring Rom-com Saga

In this spinoff from a hit webtoon, Shin Hye-sun stars as a heroine who can remember all her past lives. As a young girl in her 18th life, she falls for a thoughtful boy next door. In her 19th life, she tries to make her way back to him, only to find he has become a cold man who doesn’t want to get close to anyone. Can love triumph across lifetimes?

King the Land (premiering June 17)

He immediately dislikes her, writing her off as someone who hides her true self behind a fake smile. Former global K-Pop idols Jun-ho and Yoona team up for the first time as actors in this much-anticipated “enemies to lovers” K-Romance.

Behind Your Touch
Comedy meets Suspense with a Dash of Romance

Destined with You
The Most Spellbinding K-Couple meets in a Classic K-Romance
K-Romance powerhouses Cho Boa and Rowoon (also a K-Pop idol) combine their star wattage in this sweeping saga. Rowoon plays a hotshot lawyer who has it all, but is haunted by a family curse. A Time Called You (Premiering in third quarter of 2023)
Stars from Business Proposal and Vincenzo in a time-slip romance
Ahn Hyo-seop (from Business Proposal) and Jeon Yeo-been (from Vincenzo) star in this remake of classic Taiwanese romance Someday or One Day. Jeon’s character travels back in time to 1998 and meets a man played by Ahn, who bears an uncanny resemblance to her late boyfriend. In fact, each lead takes on the challenge of playing two characters who look identical, but have completely different personalities — and all the complications that create when it comes to love.

Doona! (Premiering in fourth quarter of 2023)
K-romance meets K-pop
A college student (Yang Se-jong) navigates life and school while dealing with a unique predicament — he's living with a former K-Pop sensation, played by real-life former K-Pop star Suzy. 5 classic shows to satisfy your kilig fix this summer

The hot season keeps getting hotter with these binge-worthy romantic movies and series you can watch with no interruption with your PLDT Home connection

With so much content available for streaming these days, it’s easy to miss out on good movies and series. Two must-watch categories on our list are classics and modern romance that give us the feels to be in love. More than any other time of the year, summer is the best season to catch the love bug, whether it’s the kilig we’re looking for or the wistfulness over passions that didn’t work out.

The lazy days, especially when we’re on break, might as well give us enough free time to catch up and binge on titles that inspire these emotions. Here are five shows and films tackling love in all its forms: obsessive, cute, romantic, challenging, and ever-changing — all of which you can stream without interruption especially if you’ve got PLDT Home’s blazing fast and super reliable internet connection.

1. Letters to Juliet (2010)

This movie expertly weaves people’s notions of love from the Elizabethan era with the 21st century. Letters to Juliet is set in Verona, Italy, where Shakespeare located three of his plays including Romeo and Juliet in 1594. There is a tourist attraction in Verona called Juliet’s House that features a balcony much like in the play, where letters that people write to Juliet are taped.

The New Yorker fact checker Sophie (Amanda Seyfried, Mean Girls) visits the place with her fiancé chef Victor (Gael Garcia Bernal, The Motorcycle Diaries). One day, she finds a letter tucked behind a brick in the wall written 50 years ago by the then teenage English girl Claire (Vanessa Redgrave, Girl, Interrupted) to Lorenzo, whom she leaves behind in Italy. Claire writes an impassioned letter to Claire who, now widowed, comes to Verona with her short-tempered but protective grandson Charlie (Christopher Egan, The Prince). What follows is a story of fateful love and romance involving Sophie, Claire, and Charlie that you’ll need to follow and see through to the end.

2. Endless Love (1981)

Starring Brooke Shields (The Bachelor) as Jade and Martin Hewitt (Secret Games) as David, this romantic drama directed by Franco Zeffirelli was based on the eponymous book by Scott Spencer.

In Endless Love, Jade lives in suburban Chicago with her bohemian, counter-culture family and falls in love with David. The two begin a sexually intense relationship that affects the 15-year-old Jade’s schooling, leading her father to ban David from their house for 30 days. This results in a chain of events that leads to tragedy and, ultimately, love.

3. Summer Guys (2021)

The web drama series was filmed on Jeju island, South Korea, in the summer of 2020, starring Lee Jung Shin, Kang Mi Na, Kwon Hyun Bin, Lee Jung Shik, and Lim Na Young.

The title is derived from the beachfront bar Summer Guys, which is failing despite the popularity of the resort where it’s located. The barkeeper (Kang Mi Na) is determined to revive its glory days before summer begins and enlists the help of three friends who could be bartenders. One is an Ivy League graduate from a wealthy family, another is a devout Buddhist who wants to help people, and the third is a baseball player. It’s a summer to remember on an island known for its beaches, food, holidaymakers, and romance.
Stream Summer Guys on Viu.

4. My Summer Prince (2016)

My Summer Prince takes the Shakespearean literary device of mistaken identity that leads to love but in the very modern context of crisis management and public relations. Rebellious royal Prince Colin of Edgemere (Jack Turner, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow) is in small town Greenbriar in Idaho on a state visit when gets into mischief, for which he is arrested by the sheriff. His mother, Queen Rosalind, hires cutthroat PR boss Deidre Kelly (Lauren Holly, Crank: High Voltage) for damage control and she brings her assistant Mandy Cooper (Taylor Cole, 12 Rounds) along with her.

Unfortunately for Deidre, she gets chickenpox when they land in Greenbriar. She is then forced to send her younger assistant Mandy to deal with the crisis. When Mandy is mistaken for Deidre by the Queen’s assistant Penelope and by extension the Prince, she doesn’t correct them until the deception gets too deep to walk back. Mandy and Prince Colin get to know each other as they strike a deal with the sheriff for him to do community work. The Prince, who is set to be engaged to Lady Isabella as soon as he gets back to Edgemere, falls in love with “Deidre” and finds that duty and what his heart desires don’t always have to be in conflict with each other.
Stream My Summer Prince on Lionsgate Play.

5. Rush to the Dead Summer (2017)

The Chinese TV series spans a period of 10 years for a group of friends, starting in summer when they are in high school. Starring Chen Xuedong, Zheng Shuang and Bai Jingting, the 2017 series is about friendship and betrayal between a quiet artist, a kind and sincere girl, and a protective friend who goes to prison for defending a friend.

The story follows them through graduation and after they go their separate ways and live their own lives. Like in real life, people grow and change — and not always for the better. The summer of their youth fades away and in comes reality with its lessons and hard-fought wins.

6 Nostalgic Lines from movies on Disney+ that Make Sense as an Adult

Rewatch your favorite movies all over again on Disney+ when you #PayWithGCash

We all had our favorite movies when we were kids, along with scenes and characters we will never forget. But sometimes, even stories meant for kids hide a few lines that may not have made sense before but hit harder as an adult.

Rewatching all your favorite movies from your childhood on Disney+ is now made convenient and easy when you #PayWithGCash. From iconic Walt Disney Animation Studio movies like Beauty and the Beast or Disney and Pixar’s Toy Story to the original Star Wars trilogy, you can enjoy these favorites on Disney+ without having to use a credit card or a mobile plan.

If you’re in the mood to walk down memory lane while picking up some pearls of wisdom, here are some lines from movies on Disney+ that really make sense after hearing them again:

“Oh yes, the past can hurt. But the way I see it, you can either run from it, or learn from it.” - Rafiki, The Lion King (1994)

The Lion King (1994) had a lot of lessons on growing up and acceptance, especially the concept of ‘Hakuna Matata’ or as translated from Swahili, “there are no problems.” But perhaps, this is one of the greatest pieces of advice from Rafiki and applies to many challenges in life you might have had.

From getting over a heartbreak to unresolved arguments with loved ones, it’s up to you to avoid and forget these memories or to examine what you can learn from them and move on.

“Well there’s the usual things: flowers, chocolates… promises you don’t intend to keep.” - Cogsworth, Beauty and the Beast (1991)

Cogsworth had a funny reply to the Beast asking him what he could do for Belle, but in hindsight, this is an interesting take on romance and relationships in general. As you grow old, you might have realized that people might make promises they don’t intend to keep because they want to impress or woo others.

This line is both a warning for you to be wary about grand statements people make but also a reminder for you to only make promises you know you can fulfill.

“You never forget kids like Emily or Andy, but they forget you.” - Jessie, Toy Story 2 (1999)

Have you ever thought about how much you might have impacted someone’s life? When Jessie mulled about how her owner Emily eventually forgot her, it feels just the same with people you lost contact with over the years.

You might have met a teacher or a random stranger who left a big impression on you only for them to fade away, but there are people too, who you’ve greatly touched that you might not even remember. It’s times like these when it’s important to hold onto our memories rather than dwell on the person we’ve lost.

“Do or do not. There is no try.” - Yoda, Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

You may have written it off as a funny figure of speech after hearing Yoda say this for the first time but Yoda is wise in his own ways. Success and failure are realities of the world, and all you can do is your best to have more successes than failures.

“Trying” implies that you doubt you can do something and that you aren’t wholly committed to it. Here Yoda reminds us that there will be failures in life but that should not stop you from committing to your goals rather than always keeping one foot out the door.

“Your overconfidence is your weakness.” - Luke Skywalker, Star Wars: Return of the Jedi (1983)

Similar to Yoda’s famous phrase, Luke’s reply to the Emperor during the finale of Return of the Jedi, might have appeared as a simple retort but has a lot of meaning when you look back on it.

Confidence  is important to prevent doubts from clouding your ability to do things but being too confident can also lead to failure. You may miss out on details, like important instructions or extra requirements, refuse to accept further knowledge or fail to see the harm your choices are causing others.

“Don’t be ridiculous, Andrea. Everybody wants this.” - Miranda Priestly,  The Devil Wears Prada (2006)

If you’ve watched The Devil Wears Prada, Miranda Priestly tells Andrea how privileged she should feel about living such a charmed life. However, living a life of luxury where everyone does whatever it takes to get ahead is not everyone’s cup of tea.

Success can have an ugly side at times, and some people will do anything to meet their goals at the expense of others. However, seeing Andrea walkaway after getting out of the car, we realize not everyone wants to have to drag others down to get what they want and you shouldn’t have to go down that path to find your fulfillment.

Hopefully, with time comes a little bit of wisdom and you can find it in the most unexpected places. With Disney+ now available in the Philippines, easily pay for your subscription with GCash and revisit all-time favorites with a different perspective.
