Coca-Cola Philippines and partners mobilize over 400 volunteers to join coastal cleanup

Despite rain, volunteers from over 30 organizations join International Coastal Cleanup activation at Subic Bay

Over 30 organizations gathered last September 17 at Subic Bay to pluck away debris and trash along its coastline and waters. Armed with cleaning kits provided by Coca-Cola Philippines and taught to properly segregate waste collected from the cleanup by the Lighthouse Legacy Foundation, some 430 volunteers were undeterred by the rain and joined many other groups and organizations in the country who participated in the annual International Coastal Cleanup (ICC). Employees of Coca-Cola Philippines from Bonifacio Global City, Taguig City, and Coca-Cola Beverages Philippines’ (CCBPI) North Luzon Commercial Unit also joined this year’s ICC at Subic.

Organized by Coca-Cola Philippines in partnership with Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority and the Lighthouse Legacy Foundation, this year’s ICC activity at Subic Bay helped to deliver on the ongoing commitment of Coca-Cola Philippines to create partnerships that promote a debris-free environment, consistent with the World Without Waste vision of the company.

“At Coca-Cola, we recognize our responsibility to help solve the global plastic waste problem. To help create a World Without Waste, we have a global goal to help collect and recycle the equivalent of every bottle and can we sell by 2030. This is an ambitious goal that we cannot achieve alone, which is why we collaborate with like-minded organizations to help drive collective action,” said Jonah de Lumen-Pernia, Director for the Philippines Franchise, Coca-Cola ASEAN & South Pacific.

“We are grateful to all the volunteers who traveled to Subic, brought their family and friends, and chose to spend their Saturday with us doing coastal cleanup. It feels great to see the sense of volunteerism for the environment alive through this ICC event, especially after a two-year hiatus,” said Atty. Cashmer Dirampaten, Director for Public Affairs, Communications, and Sustainability, Coca-Cola Franchise East Region, Coca-Cola ASEAN & South Pacific.

The ICC is a global movement where volunteers from more than 90 countries simultaneously remove debris from shorelines, rivers, lakes, and waterways; raise environmental awareness; and provide information that will guide and influence decision-making bodies and industries in developing smart solutions to the persisting marine debris problem.

Addressing a persisting challenge

SBMA Chair Rolen Paulino emphasized the importance of working together to ensure a sustainable future and healthy environment for the next generation. “Mga bata, makinig kayo. Para sa inyo itong ginagawa namin. Sana may maiwan pa kami na environment [para sa inyo]. Sana ‘yung ilog natin malinis pa, sana ‘yung beaches natin [ay] pwede pang paliguan. Request ko lang [na] huwag na tayong makadagdag [ng basura]. Be conscious, sa atin lang [galing] ito lahat,” he said, addressing the volunteers. “Nagpapasalamat ako [na] merong Lighthouse [Legacy Foundation] at Coca-Cola na gustong maging maganda pa ‘yung titirhan ng mga bata, ng mga next generation."

(Kids, listen. We are doing these cleanup initiatives for your generation. I truly hope that we can leave a clean, healthy environment for you. I hope we can keep our rivers clean, and our beaches safe for swimming. I ask you all to please avoid throwing away trash into the environment. Let’s manage it properly. Be conscious because this pollution was also caused by us. I thank the Lighthouse Legacy Foundation and Coca-Cola for undertaking programs that address the roots of plastic pollution for our children and their next generation.)

“Joining the coastal cleanup, I learned a lot about proper waste collection, segregation, and recycling, which I plan to share with my loved ones. We all need to help reduce waste, and this initiative is an opportunity to get everyone to realize that safeguarding the environment is a shared responsibility,” shares a volunteer from Alon at Araw organization, which had the largest delegation of volunteers during the cleanup.

The annual ICC event is an opportunity to reinvigorate the spirit of volunteerism among Filipinos by enlisting their participation in helping reduce marine litter. “It is important for the Philippines to act quickly on the matter because failure to do so would mean irreparable damage to our marine resources,” said Zed Avecilla, Executive Director, Lighthouse Legacy Foundation. “The annual ICC is always a good opportunity to raise awareness on marine pollution and the importance of proper waste segregation and disposal.”

This ICC activity in Subic this year was able to divert 733.46 kilos of marine debris, equivalent to 295 sacks of waste. Recyclable plastics will be brought to partner recycling organizations such as Precious Plastics Philippines and Sentinel Upcycling Technologies, while the rest will be considered for waste to energy or will be brought to landfills.

ICC activity in other areas

CCBPI—the bottling arm of Coca-Cola in the Philippines—also activated 20 of its sites to participate in ICC activity in other parts of the country from September 16 to 17, and 19. Across its vast footprint in the country, CCBPI aim to refresh the Philippines and make a difference as it strives to operate its business with the highest sustainability standards.

“CCBPI’s yearly participation in the International Coastal Cleanup is just one of the many ways we ensure that we remain an integral part in supporting a debris-free environment for the communities we operate in. As we help reduce marine litter, we unceasingly accelerate our used clear PET plastic bottle collection efforts nationwide — helping to turn our World Without Waste commitment into reality through the collaboration of our employees and partners across the Philippines,” said Atty. Juan Lorenzo TaƱada, Corporate and Regulatory Affairs Director of Coca-Cola Beverages Philippines Inc.

Commitment to a World Without Waste

In 2018, Coca-Cola announced its global vision of a World Without Waste including the ambitious goals of helping collect a bottle or can for every one it sells by 2030 and using at least 50% recycled content in its packaging by 2025.

To encourage recycling and promote a circular economy, in 2019, the beverage company introduced the Philippines’ first beverage bottles made from 100% recycled plastic material (excluding the cap and label) with the launch of its Viva! Mineralized water and Sprite 500ml clear bottles made from 100% recycled plastic.

Moreover, Coca-Cola also placed “Recycle Me” on all of its package labels across Coca-Cola brands in the Philippines to promote and remind consumers about the value of recycling and how everyone can take part in the recycling process.

Coca-Cola Philippines, and its community partners nationwide, also made its accessible for consumers to know where to drop off their used PET bottles through the Coca-Cola Philippines website.

“We recognize that there continues to be too much plastic in the world ending up where it shouldn’t be. Nobody wants to see that. At Coca-Cola, we’re fully committed to making our vision of a World Without Waste come to life,” said Tony Del Rosario, Coca-Cola Philippines President and VP for Franchise Operations for the ASEAN and South Pacific Unit-East Asia Region.

Huawei: building up digital ecosystems to promote economy

[Bangkok, Thailand, September 19, 2022] HUAWEI CONNECT 2022, Huawei's 7th annual flagship event for the global ICT industry, began on Monday in Bangkok. Huawei brought industry leaders, experts, and partners from around the world together to explore how to more effectively unleash digital productivity.

Initiatives to help all industries go digital

Ken Hu, Huawei's Rotating Chairman, delivered a keynote outlining three ways the ICT ecosystem can help break through common barriers in digital transformation:

**   Boost digital infrastructure, including more robust connectivity and stronger, more diverse computing resources.

**   Help organizations go beyond simple cloud adoption and truly make the most of cloud, focusing on advanced technology services that drive leapfrog development.

**   Build out local digital ecosystems, including partner development, strengthening the digital talent pool, and providing more support for SMEs.
Ken Hu, Rotating Chairman at Huawei, speaking at
HUAWEI CONNECT 2022

GDP growth has been unstable over the past two years. However, the digital economy has seen consistent growth on a global scale – more than 15% in 2021. This has prompted many organizations to transform their operations and service offerings with next-generation digital technology.

"Going digital is clearly the right choice," said Hu. "The demand is there, and so are the technologies. The world is unleashing digital productivity, and it's happening right now."

H.E. David Almirol, Usec of DICT in the Philippines, speaking at
HUAWEI CONNECT 2022

H.E. David Almirol, Undersecretary of Department of Information and Communications Technology in the Philippines, gave a speech during the event. He stated, “the Philippines are bringing and launching government cloud soon. Not only to unify what we have but to build more government cloud services in the country and the government cannot do it without a very good partner. We need to unify whatever we have and we need to ask for help from a lot of private entities. So our main intention is to find ways to build a foundation to invite everyone to build on top of that foundation, so that the government will become an enabler to everyone."

Building out local ecosystems for shared success

At the event, Huawei reinforced its commitment to open collaboration and shared success. The company called for governments and enterprises to work more closely together to cultivate local digital ecosystems that build up innovation partners, strengthen the talent pool, and support startups.

Simon Lin, the President of Huawei Asia-Pacific Region, released the Digital First Economy whitepaper that delves into targeted policy suggestions for digital infrastructure construction and digital economy development in the Asia-Pacific region.

"The Asia-Pacific region is standing at the forefront of the global digital landscape," said Lin. "Huawei is committed to becoming a key contributor to the digital economy in the region. We will keep supporting its digitalization and sustainable development efforts, and building out the industry ecosystem." “As countries in the region are empowering ICT talents to boost digital economy, Huawei will keep strengthening the talent ecosystem through leadership, skill, and knowledge.”

Speaking from the perspective of a tech provider, Mr. Jeff Wang, President of Huawei Public Affairs and Communications said: “Connecting people and building the next generation of talent is more important than ever for driving forward digital transformation. For more than 20 years, we’ve worked closely with our partners in Asia Pacific to provide Internet access to the unconnected. Meanwhile, we are on track to meet our goal of training 500,000 ICT talents in the region by 2026.”

New Huawei Cloud Region in Indonesia, and 15+ new services

At the event, Zhang Ping'an, the CEO of Huawei Cloud, announced the launch of new Huawei Cloud Regions in Indonesia and Ireland. By the end of 2022, Huawei Cloud will operate 75 availability zones in 29 regions around the world, boosting services for more than 170 countries and regions.

Huawei Cloud and its partners also took this opportunity to launch the "Go Cloud, Go Global" ecosystem plan. Focusing on Everything as a Service, Huawei Cloud is committed to building the industry-leading platform for innovations on the cloud. As part of these efforts, Huawei announced the global launch of 15+ new advanced services.

The three-day conference in Bangkok is the first stop on HUAWEI CONNECT's global tour in 2022. Featuring two keynote sessions, six summits, as well as multiple breakout sessions and demos, this year's event dives into the challenges that governments and enterprises face at all stages of their digital transformation journey, Huawei's advancements in digital infrastructure, as well as the company's latest cloud services and ecosystem partner solutions.

Warns sellers of verified accounts may face jail time
As it continues to intensify its crackdown against cybercrime, leading fintech firm GCash, in coordination with Globe Group and the Philippine National Police-Anti Cybercrime Group (PNP-ACG) arrested an online seller of SIM cards with verified e-wallet accounts.

The Globe Security and Cyber Response Unit and the PNP-ACG conducted an entrapment operation of the illegal seller in Quezon City. The 34-year-old suspect was found selling 556 pieces of SIM cards with verified GCash accounts for P350 each. He has been selling SIM cards to individuals who use them to circumvent wallet limits for online gaming.

“GCash and the wider Globe Group continue to be solid partners of PNP-ACG and other authorities in proactive efforts and response against cybercrime. As we make more arrests, may it serve as a stern warning to fraudsters that we are vigilant and adamant in making sure perpetrators are put behind bars,” said Ingrid BeroƱa, GCash Chief Risk Officer. “Through these combined efforts, our users can rest assured that their funds and data remain safe and secure with GCash.”

The suspect is facing charges for violating the Access Devices Regulation Act of 1998 in relation to the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012. PNP-ACG Cyber Response Unit head Lt. Col. Jay Guillermo also warned, persons whose identity were used in scams may also face jail time.

“If we can prove that a person voluntarily sells their accounts, they can also be liable for violating the law,” Guillermo said. “We are currently investigating where illegal sellers are getting their SIM cards with verified e-wallet accounts.”

GCash is also ready to assist in the prosecution of the arrested fraudster by helping provide evidence.

Aside from the PNP-ACG, GCash has also been in close coordination with other authorities like the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG), the National Bureau of Investigation Cybercrime Division (NBI-CCD), the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), and the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) to strengthen the campaign against various scammers and fraudsters.

On top of these partnerships, GCash protects the personal data and funds of its customers through various security measures like cyber threat detection and analytics, vulnerability scanning, as well as incident response and forensics.

Thanks to these world-class tools, the company has been able to detect and take down phishing sites and malicious social media sites that impersonate GCash, with 900 phishing sites and 400,000 social media accounts already taken down.

With the help of authorities, GCash has also been able to block 1.37 Million fraudulent accounts from January 2021 to July 2022, on top of those blocked by its security systems.

The fintech company has been relentless in its drive fraudsters and scammers through its #SafeWithGCash campaign, as it also educated its users to be extra vigilant when making transactions.
