DepEd issues guidelines on respecting indigenous peoples culture

As a result of consultations with various Indigenous Peoples (IP) communities, educators, and civil society support groups nationwide, the Department of Education (DepEd) has released an order promulgating "Guidelines on the Conduct of Activities and Use of Materials Involving Aspects of Indigenous Peoples Culture.”

Signed by Education Secretary Br. Armin Luistro FSC at the National Indigenous Peoples Education (IPEd) Gathering, the guidelines seek to provide guidance on the ethical assessment of the conduct of learning activities and related engagements of schools, DepEd offices, and other education initiatives that involve various aspects of indigenous peoples culture (e.g., ‘cultural’ presentations, performances, festivals, use of artifacts and indigenous clothing).
Education Secretary Br. Armin Luistro welcomes indigenous peoples community leaders at the signing of DepEd Order 51, s. 2014, "Guidelines on the Conduct of Activities and Use of Materials Involving Aspects of Indigenous Peoples Culture.”
Luistro expressed his gratitude to the IP leaders who continue to engage with DepEd in pursuing IPEd. “Ang lahat po ng mga kwento, mga awitin, at mga ritwal na inyong ipinapadala sa amin ngayon ay isang pagbabalik-tanaw sa kung sino ang Pilipino. Maraming salamat sa mga panahon na pinagtibay ninyo ang inyong mga paniniwala at hindi ninyo pinagpalit ang tunay na diwang Pilipino.”

The signing event was preceded by a consultation with IP community representatives and support groups, who welcomed the order and were instrumental in crafting the guidelines. Luistro emphasized the importance of cultural exchange in the constant effort to better understand and value indigenous culture in education.

Apart from issuing the said guidelines, the DepEd had also begun recognizing private educational institutions serving IP learners in an effort to promote the right of IP communities to cultural integrity and due recognition of "katutubong kaalaman" in the education system.

One of the fastest growing smartphone manufacturers globally, Lenovo opens its third Lenovo Mobile Exclusive Store (LMES) in Davao City.

The newly opened store, which is the third LMES in Davao City alone, is operated by Banana Telecommunications Inc., located at the 3rd floor, Gaisano Mall, Tagum, Davao. The first concept store opened in October last year in Gaisano Mall, Davao and the second store opened middle of this year in Abreeza Mall, Davao.

"Davao continues to be Mindanao's top economy, with a sustained growth in its gross regional domestic product (GRDP) since 2012. We are proud that Lenovo has been one of the first brands to tap this robust market, in lieu with our strong commitment to providing Filipinos powerful smartphones as we strengthen Lenovo's presence in the Mindanao Region," Michael Ngan, Country General Manager of Lenovo Philippines, recognizes the increasing demand for smartphones all over the country since 2011.

The National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) confirms that Davao has landed the fourth in the country in terms of the Philippines' gross domestic product, having 3.5% share. It remains to be one of the richest cities in the Philippines outside of Metro Cebu and Metro Manila. Named by the Foreign Direct Magazine as the 10th "Asian City of the Future," Davao City has been the center of trade, businesses and economic activities in the region, with a lot of investments continuously pouring in.

The demand for affordable smartphones has been increasing because of mobile data and social networking. Based on a report by Tigercub Digital, Internet access grew by over 500% since 2008. Smartphone penetration is expected to hit at 50% next year due to the availability of the Internet according OnDemand Research.

Lenovo Mobile Country Head, Dino Romano said, "The Philippines is an important market for Lenovo because we have seen a significant and steady increase in local smartphone shipments. Through the continuous expansion of our LMES in the country, we are reaching out to Philippine consumers, especially the younger segment of the population, whose lifestyle demands for high-performing and reliable mobile devices.”

The concept store houses a wide range of Lenovo smartphones to address the needs of the region. The Lenovo Vibe Series is currently the brand's top-of-the-line products for executives doing business in Davao. So Fresh, The Best of 2014

2014: A YEAR OF FRESH HITS

Sony Music Entertainment and Universal Music joined forces to cook up the year’s freshest hits compilation release so aptly entitled So Fresh, The Best of 2014, clamping up 20 big-shot songs including Billboard Hot 100 #1s such as Miley Cyrus, Meghan Trainor, John Legend, Pharrell Williams and MAGIC! Now it couldn’t get any fresher than that!

Running for more than 70 minutes, the CD packs in 20 speaker juices including new-world hotness anthem “All About That Bass” from 2014 breakthrough artist Meghan Trainor, as well as girl-power collaborations “Problem” by Ariana Grande feat. Iggy Azalea, “Black Widow” by Iggy Azalea feat. Rita Ora, and the Jessie J- Ariana Grande-Nicki Minaj airwave buster “Bang Bang”. Numbering in more of the dance floor hits, it also features tracks from DJs Calvin Harris with “Summer” and Avicii with EDM-country crossover “Hey Brother”, plus certified dance tracks “Wild Wild Love” (Pitbull feat. G.R.L.), “Do What U Want” (Lady Gaga feat. R. Kelly) and “This Is How We Do” (Katy Perry).

Male musers won’t get disappointed as bands like MAGIC! reel in household staple “Rude” and Maroon 5 with “Maps”. Pop prince Justin Timberlake is also featured with “Not A Bad Thing”, and newcomer Sam Smith with “I’m Not The Only One” from his first album that came out this year. Boybands are also in line as “Story Of My Life” by One Direction and “She Looks So Perfect” by 5 Seconds of Summer are counted on the track list.

So Fresh throws down every now and then too with slow tunes spread all throughout: the overtly heated “Wrecking Ball” by Miley Cyrus, the comeback classic of John Legend “All of Me”, and Begin Again movie theme “Lost Stars” by Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine.

Instant classics such as “Happy (from Despicable Me 2)” by Pharrell Williams and “Love Never Felt So Good”, a posthumous virtual duet by pop legend Michael Jackson with Justin Timberlake, raise the bar for other concurrent various artist releases.

By and large, the bravado of So Fresh is in its qualitative AND quantitative collection. This 20-track assembly is massive enough to stir up anticipation on what could be a really, really good year ahead in music...and what could be a very, very good compilation franchise.
