Out of the net and into the surf

The olive ridley turtle release was spearheaded by the Chairman of SM Prime Henry Sy Jr.’s eldest daughter, Jan Catherine Sy (4th from right), with mom, Jasmin T. Sy (3rd from right).

A real-world turtle tale borne out of Hamilo Coast’s conservation efforts to protect marine wildlife. On one early November Sunday morning, an olive ridley turtle (lepidochelys olivacea) that accidentally got entangled in the snares of a fisherman’s net was turned over to Hamilo Coast’s Sustainability Team. Named for the olive color of its heart-shaped carapace, olive ridley sea turtles contribute to the health of coral reefs, which is the first line of defense against storm surges.

Later that same day, after some recovery time from the stressful experience, the albeit healthy 1.5-foot long juvenile olive ridley turtle safely was released as it flippered its way through the warm sands of Pico Beach towards the cerulean waters of the West Philippine Sea.

The albeit healthy 1.5-foot long juvenile olive ridley turtle safely flippered its way through the warm sands of Pico Beach, all the way to the cerulean waters of the West Philippine Sea.

The turtle release was spearheaded by Jan Catherine Sy, a staunch animal welfare advocate and eldest daughter of the Chairman of SM Prime Henry Sy, Jr., accompanied by the Chairman’s wife, Jasmin T. Sy. Consistent with Jan’s love for animals, the accomplished equestrienne is an integral voice in the various environmental conservancy measures that Hamilo Coast implements.

The turtle release is part of various marine sustainable and environmental initiatives that Hamilo Coast implements, in partnership with WWF and Bantay Dagat.

The active protection of olive ridley sea turtles at Pico de Loro Cove, one of only five turtle species found in the Philippines, is an initiative of the Bantay Dagat community-based volunteer program, which engages fisher folk in coastal villages to safeguard Marine Protected Areas. Since 2008, Hamilo Coast has been a proud partner of the World Wide Fund (WWF) for Nature Philippines and this turtle release is a simple yet significant testament to Hamilo Coast’s unwavering commitment to practice environmental sustainability and preservation in its operations.

Recreate Gift-Giving

What is Christmas without presents? Gift-giving is a tradition that goes back to the wise men that visited the nativity. And while everyone loves presents from family and friends, some of the best gifts come when people share their blessings with those they may not know well but who need help.

To help vulnerable communities during the pandemic, Globe Platinum has partnered with World Vision to create the #ForFutureHeroes program. It consists of virtual experiences in collaboration with BGC Arts Center, Electric Studio, and others that allow Globe Platinum customers to pursue their passions at home while making an impact on others. Participation in every activity is matched by Globe Platinum with World Vision school kits filled with DepEd approved learning modules and supplies, so the children of Baseco Compound, Manila can continue their education.

On top of this, Globe Platinum customers have been delighting frontliners, who have worked so tirelessly to keep Filipinos safe all these months, through the Thank-A-Hero program. Apart from sending them treats from Auntie Anne’s, Coco, The Cookie Bar, and JCo Donuts, Globe Platinum is also preparing a Noche Buena feast for our frontliners, to thank those who will be hard at work all throughout Christmas Eve, keeping Filipinos safe.

Recognizing the pressing demand of educators for a fast, reliable, and affordable internet connection, Globe At Home initiated WiFi2Teach which supports the DepEd’s Distance Learning program through the donation of Globe Prepaid WiFi modems. Modems have been donated to the DepEd to equip selected public school teachers and ensure that education remains unhampered. The program continues as it now works towards raising funds to provide free WiFi modems for public school students. In partnership with Ayala Foundation, for every Globe At Home Prepaid Wifi sold, P100 will be donated to help fund internet connectivity of selected public school students at home.

To give small and medium enterprises the much-needed boost, Globe myBusiness' Gift Local campaign encourages everyone to patronize local products for their Christmas gift-giving.

GCash brings to life our beloved Christmas traditions with ChristMAS KAYA with GCASH, where celebrations and gift-giving are made possible thru innovations like GCash Send Aguinaldo, enabling users to send digital gift envelopes as aguinaldos to their inaanaks and pamangkins, and even gifting insurance thru the app's GInsure service. In the same spirit of giving and bayanihan, our customers may also donate to typhoon victims using GCash and their Globe Rewards points.

GLife, the newest GCash app feature, likewise, provides more gift and handaan options across different brands and e-commerce platforms, ranging from Lazada, Puregold, DataBlitz, Purego, Boozy, Goldilocks, Goama Games, and more.

It is indeed ‘Merry GCash!’ this Christmas, as GCash is also giving up to 30 million pesos worth of prizes just by using the app. Leading up to a few days to Christmas, consumers can get gifts just by buying load, or using GCredit to pay when they shop on their favorite online platforms. They will also get a chance to win a gift of their choice in the grand raffle.

Recreate Local Traditions

In the past, many Filipino families would look forward to the well-loved tradition on Christmas Day of watching the annual Metro Manila Film Festival which showcases local filmmakers and artists. This year, Globe and GMovies has partnered with the MMFF and UPSTREAM to recreate the MMFF tradition and bring this year’s nominated films online to Filipino homes around the nation and all over the world.

WWG also banners Filipino talents supported by Globe, celebrating the athletic achievements of such stars as 12-time 8-division boxing world champion and global icon Manny Pacquiao, Tennis child prodigy and Australian Open doubles champion Alex Eala, PH rep to FIBA 3X3 World Tour, Manila Chooks TM Team, ONE Championship’s martial arts stable Team Lakay. Globe also supports a roster of amazing local music artists and local greats with tremendous fan bases like December Avenue, Ben&Ben, SB19, The Juans, and Donnalyn Bartolome.

“We are looking forward to these exciting events that Globe has lined up for year-end and for 2021. Our commitment to our customers remains as we usher in a digital Philippines in the near future. Thank you for the support and for being with us in this journey.” said Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala, Chairman of Globe.

Sean de Guzman, Acting Prince On The Rise

Getting to know Sean de Guzman, the lead actor in ‘Anak Ng Macho Dancer’ film.

Who is he? That is the question on the lips of people this side of Tinsel Town after it was announced that a relative newcomer, Sean De Guzman bagged the lead role in Joel Lamangan’s “Anak ng Macho Dancer.”

The film, produced by Godfather Productions is written by Henry King Quitain, a top notch screenplay writer for ABS-CBN drama series. A special screening is being planned this December and an actual movie playdate might commence next year.

The 20-year old member of the boyband Clique V does not hide his excitement with regard to getting the plum role:

“Until now I cannot believe what is happening. You know, all I do now are baby steps, dahan-dahan lang. Careful as I inch my way to this new career of becoming an actor. All the surprises I get because of this break, I embrace and welcome. Ang daming natutunan. Ang sarap sa pakiramdam.”

“A part of me is a little awkward with all the attention but at the same time I am very happy.” Sean declares. “Thank you very much to director Joel Lamagan and my producers for the trust.“

He talks about his character, Inno:

“He happens to be the son of Alan Paule, the original Macho Dancer in the film by director Lino Brocka. It was a delight to work with Sir Alan, he is a very kind and giving actor. As my father in the movie, he was strict with me, always scolding me. He wants me to just follow his orders and do what he thinks is the right thing so it always ends in have a conflict.”

“Not all of us are blessed with the opportunities that come our way so we have no right to dismiss or judge someone because of their choices,” Sean states. “I am not telling that these macho dancers are saints but all of them fight for their life and loved ones.”

Adds Sean: “Inno, as a young man, does not deviate from my own personality. We are somewhat similar in being a risk-taker. When we have a goal, we dedicate our energies to the goal or cause and focused on it until it comes to fruition.”

“He became a macho dancer because he wanted his father's life to be fine, for him to experience the good life,” continues Dela Cruz. Portraying the role of a macho dancer opened the eyes of this protagonist to the excruciating facts and givens of life.

Emphatically, the young upstart says: “Akala lagi na porke lalaki sila, walang mawawala, ililigo lang. Mag-alcohol. Take vitamins and make sure you practice safe sex. What people do not get is that their self-worth decreases, especially when a patron asks a macho dancer to do something that is not natural to him. You lose your dignity and manhood because of the money you need for survival.”

He continues: “They all have a story that we should understand and respect. When you hear their stories, if people only take their time to really listen, it will hit you big time. For others, they already made a conclusion that their choice is easy.”

How did you prepare yourself to do all the daring and sexy requirements? Sean’s swift reply:

“I really studied the script and listened to the instructions of director Joel. I always feel in my heart that I am Ino. That Ino's truth should be shown in the movie. I want to believe that I did well and I leave the judgment to our future audiences.”

In conclusion, Sean de Guzman wishes: “That many will watch and love the movie. And that many better opportunities follow. I am a young man who is still surprised to all the things that are happening. All of these I really enjoy and I am thankful. The pleasure of feeling that I had a dream that came true is priceless.”

Life lessons that viewers will take home from Anak ng Macho Dancer, avers Sean:

“How he overcame the consequences of his actions and choices, are the biggest take home from the movie. What to me is important here is that he fought for his life. He didn't just sulk. What he thinks is right for the people he loves, he did it head-on. We all sometimes have choices that are not good, but as long as you know the consequences of that choice, there is still a lesson to be learned. Mistakes and struggles, also triumphs are part and parcel of all our lives.”
