Renowned Fashion Visionary John Herrera and Epson team up for an Aguila-inspired collection printed on Digital Textile Printers

Fashion Visionary and Designer John Herrera
Global technology leader Epson Philippines has officially partnered with renowned fashion designer John Herrera to showcase a 30-piece collection digitally printed with Epson’s next generation textile dye-sublimation transfer printers.

The preview of John Herrera’s latest collection was held at the Shangri-La Mall Grand Atrium on 1 February 2017.

Together with Epson Philippines, John showcased his runway collection that takes inspiration from the Philippine Protected Animal – Aguila (Great Philippine Eagle). The transition of this specific collection was from black and white to coloured designs.

#JohnHerreraXEpson Fashion Show

Fresh from his most recent award as the top designer in the 2015 London Emerging Designers (LED) Awards, John Herrera, together with Epson is at the forefront of taking fashion to the next level through digital textile printing.

The collection is printed with Epson’s SureColor F-series dye-sublimation digital textile printers, the SureColor SC-F9270 and SC-6270.
“This partnership with Epson is very exciting. There are so many things you can do with printing compared to just buying fabric. Before, all collections by designers were done painstakingly by hand. Many of the outfits such as 3D items that are worn by the models can only be attached by hand, so what was presented on the runway cannot be worn again and again. With digital printing, the actual clothes in the collection can really be worn in real life,”, said John Herrera.
“The collection I will be presenting will be impossible to do without the Epson digital textile printer. I would have to paint the designs myself if there was no Epson printer, and with only a month to prepare, it could not have been done,” he added.
John adopts a “no-waste, no plastic” approach and puts a lot of importance on lessening wastage in his work. “With digital textile printing, we only use the exact volume of fabric. Instead of wasting 5 yards of fabric to do a lay out for a dress, we use only one and a half yards of digitally printed fabric to create one. Digital textile printing significantly lessens fabric wastage.

“Faster, more intelligent, almost zero wastage - that’s what Epson brings to the table,” he said.

“Epson is happy to officially introduce John Herrera as the Brand Ambassador of Epson Philippines’ Commercial and Industrial Printers segment. He’s very passionate about digital textile printing which makes him a great Brand Ambassador for us to educate more people about this technology,” said Ed Bonoan, Senior General Manager and Marketing Head, Epson Philippines.

Epson’s digital textile printing technology enables designers such as John Herrera to help them achieve their artistic vision.

Through this innovation, their ideas are translated onto high quality digital textile prints driven by Epson’s PrecisionCore printhead technology, one of the fastest inkjet delivery technologies in the world. Its print nozzles deliver ultra-precise control of ink droplets for superior image sharpness across a wide range of ink and media producing outstandingly vivid and unique prints.

“We are certain that this collaboration will help us bring our digital textile printers closer to our customers especially those in the creative industry. Digital textile printing technology will definitely inspire more designers, to make their own prints for their world-class designs. Now, designers are only limited by their imagination,” shared Pamela Albar, Department Head for Commercial and Industrial Printers, Epson Philippines.

Epson’s in Style! Textile Printers Are Transforming the Fashion Scene

There’s a revolution going on in the world of fashion.

Avel Bacudio in Print Your Passion

Style trends come and go, but this revolution is so far-reaching, it’s set to rock the foundations of the fashion world for good.

The game-changing development that is shaking up the industry is digital textile printing. Digital textile printing is pushing the boundaries and opening up new possibilities in the fashion world for apparel, accessories and furnishing. With this, designers are given free rein to pursue their creative vision, and are limited only by their imagination in their design, and to translate their ideas to fabric.

This process unleashes design creativity, enables savvy brands to boost their image and helps retailers to meet their customers’ expectations, bringing the latest fashion wear designs from catwalk to the stores in a shorter time. And digital textile printing delivers the distinctive personal styles that today’s individualistic customers want.

Limited only by the imagination

In the traditional industry model, designs are printed on fabric using silk-screen printing – a costly and labour-intensive process that can take weeks to produce a single order. Designers are heavily constrained in their ability to translate ideas into finished fabric, since the process requires the design to be engraved on mesh screens by highly skilled craftsmen, and then demands large minimum yardages before a rotary or flatbed printing job can get under way.

In contrast, digital textile printing allows for fabric to be printed in remarkably small runs. And designs need not be just the stripes, dots or flowers we’re used to seeing, repeated across the garment in a limited number of colours. Textile designers today have absolutely no barriers to their creativity. Already using digital photography and technology such as Photoshop in the creative process, designers are working with source materials like original photography, copyrighted images and paintings, or even creating new designs to produce unique, breathtaking designs that can even be considered works of art.

And there are no constraints on colors – screen-printed textiles typically average six to eight colors at most. With digital textile printing, there is literally no limit to the number of colours that can be used. The digital process is also giving designers the freedom to work with a wider range of fabrics, from the polyester family, as well as cotton blends, lycra, silk, nylon and other materials.

Recent season’s runway shows and major store displays demonstrate how high-end brands have embraced digital printing technology. For example, Helmut Lang’s designers have used their own photographs of unlikely-sounding inspirations like subway walls and peeling paint, to create unique, abstract designs for the brand’s collection of tops and dresses.

Apart from its enthusiastic take-up by the major fashion brands, digital textile printing is also enabling new designers to spread their wings and bring their ideas to market. The technology provides an exciting opportunity for talented designers in our region and around the world to showcase their creativity – and printing technology leader Epson is offering them significant support.

Epson in style

Renowned fashion designer Kansai Yamamoto has collaborated with Epson on many instances to showcase his creations combining traditional Japanese designs and ultra-modern styles. Commenting on his spectacular “HELLO ISTANBUL” fashion show in 2014, he said, "Recently, a number of new technologies have presented valid alternatives to the traditional Japanese crafts of dyeing, weaving and sewing. I would include Epson's textile printing in the top class of these technologies.”

“Hello Istanbul” fashion show by Kansai Yamamoto

Working to exacting standards, Epson spent four weeks reproducing the designs with specialist Genesta inks on the Monna Lisa textile printing system developed by Epson-owned Robustelli of Italy, and on Epson's SureColor SC-F7170 series and SurePress FP-30160 textile printers.

Last year, Epson staged its second Digital Couture event in advance of Fashion Week in New York City, showcasing collections from 11 North and Latin American designers created using Epson’s state-of-the-art SureColor F-Series dye-sublimation printing solutions. In Taiwan last November, Epson collaborated with designer Isabelle Wen to launch her new collection of couture clothing, with a segment of it printed by Epson’s digital textile printers powered by its PrecisionCore technology.

Within Southeast Asia, we have internationally acclaimed designer Avel Bacudio from Philippines, who has collaborated with Epson on a collection that pays homage to the beauty of the Philippines last year. He says of printing with digital printers, “Digital prints really make a difference; I am no longer constrained by physical limitations. I can do a lot to express myself in new ways.”

Unleashing the possibilities in production

Improvements in quality have been key to today’s widespread adoption of digital textile printing technology by the fashion industry. Incremental improvements in printers and inks have led to the longer-lasting, crisper prints we see today. From a production point of view, digital textile printing is often cheaper than screen printing – and it definitely facilitates faster turn-round, whether to enable stores to delight their customers with short run designs that are less tied to the traditional seasons, or to fulfil a one-off commission from a celebrity with an impossible deadline.

For the manufacturer, digital textile printing brings greater business opportunity and agility, in enabling production across segments to meet the market demands – from apparel, furnishing and accessories, to providing a sample print preview to a brand before going mass production. A manufacturer can now produce everyday wearables alongside high end fashion in customised quantities; from interior furnishings such as curtains and sofa covers, to accessories such as tote bags and shoes. Production possibilities are only limited by the designers’ imagination.

Epson is committed to strengthening its presence in textile printing and aims to provide products and services that surprise and delight customers in this market. Their advanced dye sublimation technology is helping designers create their own textile patterns in the exact design they want, when they need it, and in just the quantity required. Their new range of industrial textile printers offers maximum versatility for customised products on-demand – from stunning fashion items to creative interior dĂ©cor.

From the producer’s point of view, affordability is crucial; the Epson digital textile printer’s low cost of ownership and optimised performance put advanced production technology within the reach of visionary designers, helping them bring their designs to commercial reality in a constantly changing fashion world.

Akita Epson Completes New Printhead Factory - New Plant to Triple Inkjet Printhead Production Capacity

Akita Epson Corporation, a group company of Seiko Epson Corporation (TSE: 6724, "Epson"), has held a ceremony to celebrate the completion of a new factory. Epson invested approximately 3.4 billion yen on the construction of the plant, which will triple Akita Epson's current printhead production capacity. Construction began in October 2015 and the new plant went online earlier this month.

Epson provides printers and services based on original Micro Piezo inkjet technology to customers in the home, office, commercial, and industrial markets. The printheads produced at the new Akita Epson factory will be the core devices to be used in Epson's high-capacity ink tank printers and business inkjet printers.

Epson’s high-capacity ink tank printers meet the needs of customers for low-cost prints with genuine Epson print quality. Initially launched in October 2010, sales of these products had reached as many as 15 million units worldwide as of June 2016. The office market is also seeing annual growth in demand for high-speed business inkjet printers that produce outstanding image quality at a lower cost per print and lower energy consumption than laser printers.

"Akita Epson is an important domestic production site with advanced technological capability and a close working relationship with Epson's corporate R&D function," said Takashi Mitsui, president of Akita Epson. "We make a significant contribution to the manufacturing capability of the entire Epson Group, sharing with Epson's overseas manufacturing plants the technical expertise we have gained from manufacturing core devices. By using Epson's original production equipment and automating and rationalizing production lines, the new plant will further raise our production capability."

Epson is committed to advancing its original technologies and to delighting customers by exceeding their expectations with products and services based on original core devices.

Inkjet printer printheads

Micro Piezo printheads eject droplets of ink via mechanical pressure. This mechanical pressure is created when piezoelectric elements in the print heads contract in response to an applied voltage. Two main characteristics set Epson's technology apart from other inkjet printing systems. The first is that Micro Piezo printing systems do not use heat to eject the ink droplets. The second is that they precisely control the volume of ink contained in each ink droplet.

With Singapore Tourism Board and Epson Singapore, TANGS and Taff present ĺş„Zhuang – Home of Singapore Designers, a retail pop-up infusing fashion, technology and art

With the support of the Singapore Tourism Board and Epson Singapore, this first-of-its-kind retail experience showcases local brands across multiple product categories

Singapore – In support of Singapore’s brands and fashion designers, and to better showcase them to a broader audience, Taff (Textile and Fashion Federation Singapore) has collaborated with local retailer, TANGS, a clear choice given their legacy of supporting local talent.

The resulting collaboration isĺş„Zhuang – Home of Singapore Designers, a pop up supported by the Singapore Tourism Board and Epson Singapore, bringing fashion, art and technology together to create a unique and engaging retail experience.

Multi-disciplinary artist, Daryl Goh, was commissioned to create Installation Lucid, an art installation that is a celebration of light, color, visuals and design incorporating projection mapping. Materials chosen for the art installation embody translucency, a celebration of light, color and clarity, but with consideration for other elements in its environment, while the projection mapping of moving images are a dynamic display symbolic of fluidity, adaptation and excellence – key conditions of production in design.

Epson launches new 6-axis industrial robots, C8 series robots with advanced force sensor and vision system options as part of its technology features

Epson announced the launch of its new 6-axis industrial robot, the C8 series robots. Along with the robots, Epson also provides advanced force sensor and vision system options as part of its technology features.

The new force sensors enable the robots to execute complex manufacturing tasks requiring high precision. With the force sensors, the robots are now able to ‘feel’ forces as limited as 0.1 Newton, and can perform tasks such as assembling delicate components. The sensors can also be used on tasks requiring human sensory perception such as polishing and deburring, freeing people from repetitive manual work.

The C8 series robots carry the highest payloads in Epson’s robot range, handling up to 8kg at high speeds with minimal vibration. Its advanced residual vibration control technology utilizing Epson’s Quartz Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (QMEMS) senses angular velocity and feedback to help significantly reduce vibration during motion.

One of the lightest robots in its class, the C8 series robots delivers high speed and precision in a compact space with maximum flexibility – its compact wrist and slim body design provides a wide range of motion for tight spaces.

The industrial robots can also be equipped with Epson Vision Guide software as an option – advanced machine vision and image processing systems that provide an interface for developing robot vision applications. With this, the robots are able to ‘see’ and identify objects intelligently during the production process, enabling it to pick randomly positioned products for high precision placing and assembly.
“The launch of our C8 series robots along with the force sensors has greatly expanded the applications we are able to offer to customers and is a significant innovative development in the industry. With the strong demand for industrial robots in Southeast Asia, we are excited about the expanded possibilities that come with the force sensors for our customers. As we take the next step forward in the development of our robots, we envision robots that can work alongside and support humans across industries, from manufacturing to service sectors,” said Ng Ngee Khiang, Regional General Manager (SE Asia), Epson Singapore.
Globally, it is estimated that from 2016 to 2018, robot installations will increase, at least by 15% on average per year (CAGR), with about 18% in Asia and Australia. Between 2015 and 2018, it is estimated that about 1.3 million new industrial robots will be installed in factories around the world (Source: International Federation of Robotics).
