All set for Black Nazarene Traslacion

The Black Nazarene (Poong itim na Nazareno)

More than 12 million devotees are expected to join the annual “traslacion” procession of the Black Nazarene from Luneta to Quiapo Church this Tuesday.

San Sebastian, Recoletos St. - January 9, 2014, TraslaciĆ³n of the Black Nazarene (myrns.roman)

Every year on January 9 during Fiesta in Quiapo, millions of Filipino devotees gather in Manila for a procession of the Black Nazarene, a life-sized statue of a suffering Jesus fallen under the weight of the cross, along a 6.5 km route from Rizal (Luneta) Park to the minor basilica in Quiapo.

The procession reenacts a seemingly minor historical event, the 1787 solemn Translacion, or transfer, of the image from its original home, where Rizal Park is now located, to its present home at the basilica in Quiapo. With the namamasan, the barefoot rope bearers who pull the carriage bearing the Black Nazarene statue, push their way through the crowds.

Most Filipino Catholics consider the Nazarene statue to be miraculous, able to heal terminal cancers and other sicknesses, to grant petitions, and to help those in need.

Schedule of 2018 activities of Feast of the Black Nazarene of Quiapo

The official Facebook Page of the Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene in Quiapo released the list of activities for the upcoming Traslacion.

Last December 31, 2 am – Thanksgiving Procession and  December 31 to January 8, 6 pm – Novena Mass

January 7, 1:30 pm – Replica procession

January 9, 12 mn – Eucharistic Celebration at Quirino Grandstand. Fr Hernando Coronel is the presider of the mass while Archbishop of Manila Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle will give the homily.

January 9, 5 am – After the morning prayer at 5 am, Traslacion starts from Luneta to Quiapo Church.

Historical background

An image of the Black Nazarene, carved of mesquite wood by an anonymous Mexican sculptor, arrived in Manila in the mid 1600s. The statue was partially destroyed in 1945 during the liberation of Manila in World War II. The Archdiocese of Manila commissioned a renowned Filipino santero, or saint carver, Gener Manlaqui, to sculpt the present day replica, using the original head.

The Black Nazarene statue was brought to Manila by the first group of Augustinian Recollect friars on May 31, 1606. The image was originally housed in the first Recollect church in Bagumbayan (now part of the Rizal Park), which was established on September 10, 1606, and placed under the patronage of Saint Juan Bautista Saint John the Baptist.

In 1608, the image of the "Nazareno" was transferred to the second, bigger Recollect church dedicated to San Nicolas de Tolentino (Saint Nicholas of Tolentine). The Recollect Fathers dynamically promoted devotion to the Suffering of Our Lord represented by the image that in fifteen short years, the Cofradia de Santo Cristo JesĆŗs Nazareno was established on April 21, 1621. The confraternity obtained Papal approval on April 20, 1650, from Pope Innocent X.

In the year 1787, then Archbishop of Manila, Basilio Sancho de Santas Junta y Rufina, ordered the transfer of the image of the Nazareno to the church in Quiapo, again providently placed under the patronage of Saint John the Baptist.

The Black Nazarene made a lot of miraculous things. These are the survival of the image from the great fires that destroyed Quiapo Church in 1791 and 1929, the great earthquakes of 1645 and 1863, and the destructive Bombing of Manila in 1945 during World War II. Today the head and the cross stay on the Altar Mayor of the Minor Basilica, and the original body image of the Black Nazarene is used in the processions. Other, even smaller replica can be found in other churches.

The Quiapo church uses a main hymn to the Black Nazarene that has been composed by Lucio San Pedro

Nuestro Padre Jesus Nazareno

Nuestro Padre Jesus Nazareno,
(Our Father Jesus Nazarene)
Sinasamba ka namin (We worship you)
Pinipintuho ka namin (we admire you)
Aral mo ang aming buhay (Your lessons are our life)
at Kaligtasan (and our salvation)

Nuestro Padre Jesus Nazareno
(Our Father Jesus Nazarene)
Iligtas mo kami sa Kasalanan
(Please save us from our sins)
Ang Krus mong Kinamatayan ay
(Your cross from which you died on)
Sagisag ng aming Kaligtasan
(is the sign of our Salvation)

Chorus:

Nuestro Padre Jesus Nazareno
(Our Father Jesus Nazarene)
Dinarangal ka namin (We honor you)
Nuestro Padre Jesus Nazareno
(Our Father Jesus Nazarene)
Nilul'walhati ka namin (We glorify you)
Nuestro Padre Jesus Nazareno
(Our Father Jesus Nazarene)
Dinarangal ka namin (We honor you)
Nuestro Padre Jesus Nazareno
(Our Father Jesus Nazarene)
Nilul'walhati ka namin (We glorify you)

There are religious celebrations anywhere in the world can match this feast in terms of the number and fervor of devotees surrounding the procession.

Health Talks: Merck Philippines on its 5th year of Fertility Awareness Campaign presents “Bridging Baby Steps" program to give means and ways to combat infertility

Merck Philippines remains true to its legacy of its continuous advocacy on fertility awareness. On its 5th year of Fertility Awareness Campaign, Merck remains committed to changing lives of couples with fertility problems.

The local arm of the world’s oldest pharmaceutical and chemical company, Merck Philippines has been proactive in their fertility awareness campaign since year 2013.

This year, the campaign, which is aptly named “Bridging Baby Steps,” aims to continue education on infertility and raise awareness about the in-vitro fertilization (IVF) methods available in the country through seminars and information dissemination.
World Health Organization (WHO), defined Infertility as “a disease of the reproductive system defined by the failure to achieve a clinical pregnancy after 12 months or more of regular unprotected sexual intercourse.”

Turning Dreams to Reality

Infertility is related to a person’s socio-cultural practices, including the marrying age, educational status, and professional goals. Data from a Synovate survey in 2011 shows that one out of 10 Filipinos are suffering from infertility.

Dr. Virgilio M. Novero Jr., head of St. Luke’s flagship Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine and Infertility (CARMI) said that a couple’s fertility can also be affected by issues in the female and male reproductive systems, as well as various medical conditions that can affect the quality of the egg and sperm cells.

The ART of Procreation

Infertility should not be the be-all and end-all for couples, as there are means and ways to this.

One available method for childless couples is Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART). This treatment procedure enables multiplication of ovarian follicles and facilitates egg cell retrieval. During the process, embryos will be formed outside the body of a female patient and will be transferred once the “cultures” are successfully formed. Patients who are suffering from severe sperm deficits, blocked fallopian tubes, unexplained infertility, mild endometriosis, and ovulation disorders can be candidates for this treatment.

With regards to IVF being risky, Dr. Novero shared that the success rate of such procedure has grown tremendously over the past years. He said that about six million children around the world were born via IVF.

Dess Cartaįæ†o, Sales & Marketing Manager for Fertility, Merck Philippines said:  “As they say, ‘where there’s life, there’s hope.’ We, at Merck Philippines, understand the heartaches of couples who can’t conceive a child. We want to let them know that there are means and ways to combat infertility.

World Vision and DOH partner to strengthen implementation of Philippine Milk Code

Carleneth San Valentin, World Vision Health and Nutrition Technical Manager
The international humanitarian organization World Vision and the Department of Health signed a memorandum of agreement that formalized their partnership in the Mother-Baby Friendly Philippines (MBFP) project. The Ceremonial Contract Signing, World Vision aims to strengthen the monitoring and compliance to Executive Order 51 (Philippine Milk Code of 1986) by officially launching reporting channels in partnership with Department of Health.

This October 6, 2017 held at Luxent Hotel, Quezon City,  the simple ceremony were attended by DOH Sec. Paulyn Jean Rosell-Ubial, DOH undersecretaries and assistant secretaries, World Vision National Director Rommel Fuertes and World Vision Health and Nutrition Technical Manager Carleneth San Valentin. The local chief executives of the project’s pilot sites – Malabon, Manila, and Quezon City – also graced the event with their presence.

World Vision launched the Crowd-Based Monitoring of Milk Code Compliance (CMMCC) project, otherwise known as Mother-Baby Friendly Philippines last November 2016.

The project aims to improve the implementation of Executive Order (EO) 51, also known as the Philippine Milk Code of 1986, and its revised Implementing Rules and Regulations and Republic Act (RA) No. 10028, by encouraging crowd-sourced monitoring and by developing reporting channels where the public can report non-compliance to the mentioned laws.

EO 51 seeks to protect, promote, and support breastfeeding, and to regulate the marketing of breast milk substitutes, breast milk supplements, and other related products. RA No. 10028 or the Expanded Breastfeeding Promotion Act of 2009, on the other hand, aims to uphold breastfeeding in the workplace by requiring companies and establishments to put up lactation stations and to provide breastfeeding breaks to lactating moms.

The MBFP project committee, recognizing accessibility as a necessity in achieving its goal, officially launched three new reporting channels for the public:
  • Mother-Baby Friendly Philippines website
  • Mother-Baby Friendly Philippines mobile application
  • Mother-Baby Friendly Philippines SMS or texting mechanism

As a breastfeeding advocate, World Vision supports and promotes exclusive breastfeeding (a steady diet of breast milk only) for the first six months of an infant’s life, and then continued breastfeeding with complementary food until the child reaches at least two years of age, to ensure healthy growth and development.

Finally, Solenn and Nico appeared once the blindfolds were removed as a surprise to the guests. As the photo op and media Q&A happened, guests were then served the delicious chicken complemented by some of Kenny’s well-loved sidings.

Hizon’s Catering Presents Way of Throwing All Kinds of Party Like No Other

An event like no other. At a recent 4-in-1 event for bloggers, Hizon’s Catering provided a sneak peek of what they can do. A different party occupied each of the four corners of Oasis Manila’s Pavilion - Wedding, children's party, awards night and corporate seminar settings.

The wedding, all formal and elegant, with a heavy buffet of soup, salad, main course, and a carving station.

Then there was a children’s party with a circus concept. We had fun partaking the fare which was a more sophisticated version of the kiddie meals we grew up with.

The glamorous corner was meant to be an awards night. We walked the red carpet, smiled for the paparazzis, and enjoyed the hor d’oeuvres being passed around before heading to the dessert bar.

Quite stark was the section assigned to the corporate seminar. It was supposed to be a morning affair so the set up had an omelette cooking station with a gamut of fillings to choose from.

All the dishes were whipped up by the kitchen team headed by chef Simon Dayrit, event styling was by Drew Menor. The event planning group is led by Cheska Pineda.

We enjoyed all the event stations and are more convinced that it is definitely more convenient to be a guest than the party organizer. If you feel the same way but would still like to play host, just call Hizon’s Catering and they will take care of making your dream event happen.
"Hizon's Catering is an off-premise caterer specializing in weddings, debut, private parties and corporate events. They offer a diverse menu featuring Asian, Latin, American, Carribean and European Cuisines. Hizon's offer different serving styles, plated service, buffet banqueting and family style lauriat. Whatever the occasion, Hizon's can tailor a custom menu that will suit your taste.

Since 1989 Hizon’s Catering has been busy behind the scenes of baptisms, graduations, weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, seminars, Christmas parties, product launches, yada yada yada. Name it and they’ve done it.

From simple and casual to lavish and formal. They’ve provided food, service, and amenities.

Amenities refer to those little things that can add up to a big headache -- the dĆ©cor, the hotel, the bridal car, the entertainment, the sound system, the cake. “We take care of everything. We assign an event planner to every client to coordinate all the details,” says Hizon’s Catering General Manager, Joseph Hizon. “We don’t mark-up on it, it’s like an added service. We’ve always been known for giving good value,” he shares. Their packages start at P450.

They’re also famous for serving consistently good food. “There is no secret recipe, we just make everything from scratch. As part of our culture, we don’t allow instant food and flavorings in our kitchens,” he reveals.

Hizon’s Catering can accommodate anywhere between 50 and 15,000 guests. While based in Metro Manila, they’ve gone as far as Subic, Batangas, and Rizal.

The event was made possible with the support of Oasis Manila, Advent Light & Sounds, Sentimental Groove Band, Bars Datiles Design Props, Star Balloon, Enzuno Cakes, The Photoman, Keon Salon, Jerome Yu LED Projector, and Myra Lorenzo who emceed the program.
