STI’s 31st Anniversary Celebration

From Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, over 20,000 students from various STI campuses, academic personnel, officers, employees, and special guests gathered last September 26, 2014 at Enchanted Kingdom in Sta. Rosa, Laguna to celebrate the institution’s 31st year.

STIers had a blast as they continue to rock at the Enchanted Kingdom at he whole-day celebration of talents, skills, and achievements of STI Heroes.

“Be the hero. Be STI!” is this year’s call to action as STI challenges the whole community to be the hero they can be by encouraging them to thrive to reach their dreams, honor their work, and to become responsible members of society. STI also honors its alumni as model heroes who paved the way to achieve their personal triumphs in life, and continue to empower others to be heroes in their own rights—heroes who are ready to take action and enact positive change.

STI’s 31st anniversary will kick off a grand year-long celebration with the annually anticipated showcase of talents and wit and exciting fun-filled activities. Promoting the prowess of STIers, the event staged the finest talents in different fields emerging from all over the country. Gifted singers sang in the Singing Idol competition, while young master musicians grouped together to contend in Battle of the Bands. Agile dancers stomped to the beat in Hataw Sayaw, and the brightest, most charming STI personalities competed for the titles of Mr. & Ms. STI 2014. Following this occasion, there will be more events in the following months that are focused in academic, co-curricular, and extra-curricular activities such as the STI National Youth Convention (STI NYC) to provide vitals lessons outside their classrooms, and the Tagisan ng Talino and Tagisan ng Sining competitions to showcase the aptitude of STI’s most skilled students.

“In this event, STI does not only honor the heroic feats STIers have done in the past, but we also aim to motivate the students to be heroes in their own rights. Successful alumni from different batches help us inspire our current students to be the best that they can be. Likewise, this event is more than just a traditional celebration of our anniversary; we aim to advocate the well-rounded development of young individuals. More importantly, we’ve ensured that these activities instil the necessary positive values as part of our learning systems,” says STI’s President Monico V. Jacob in a statement.

STI celebrates its foundation day every year in a joyous event where members of the STI community participate in the showcase of talents and skills in different fields. In this festive gathering, STI proudly upholds the achievements of its students who were trained and nurtured with the holistic education the institution provides as it continues to realize its thrust towards excellence and real life education.

DepEd ensures safe and learner-centered Palarong Pambansa

For Education Secretary Br Armin Luistro FSC, the Palarong Pambansa is more than just an annual sports meet. “It is the culmination of all sports and physical development programs of DepEd from Kinder to Grade 12. Nakapaloob ito sa K to 12 curriculum,” he explains prior to meeting Department of Education (DepEd) regional directors.

Reminding everyone to exercise the “same level of care we give our students in our schools” Luistro says that the Department’s strength is in developing the curriculum, which is why they have crafted a senior high school (SHS) track focused on sports. “This is not just a program for developing star athletes,” he says. “Our goal is to create a curriculum that will allow athletically-inclined learners to develop skills and knowledge that will allow them to be productive in the field even beyond their peak years.”

“We want them to be able to make a living out of what they know and love.”

While competitors in the games focus on ‘the moment,’ Luistro and his team are looking to the future. DepEd’s Management Committee (MANCOM) chooses from among different bidders (cities or provinces) the next Palaro hosts.

“One of our criteria is what they will do after the games are done. The host invests in facilities and equipment and we want to know if they will be able to maximize these when their Palaro is over.”

“We envision each province to specialize in particular sports,” Luistro says, adding that like the academic and tech-voc tracks, senior high schools cannot offer specializations in all sports.

DepEd’s vision puts the learner first when crafting policy, and this is what anchors the reforms DepEd instituted in recent games. Luistro and Palaro Secretary General and DepEd Assistant Secretary Tonisito Umali ensured insurance coverage participants and worked towards better screening for athletes.

“We have special awards for the most organized delegations and a ‘clean and green’ policy that ensures that we leave the host the way we found it. Or even better.”

As billeting areas for athletes and delegation officials, public schools undergo a “makeover” months before the games – toilets are upgraded, shower areas installed, and classrooms spruced up to serve as sleeping quarters. “Serving as quarters for delegations means an early ‘Brigada Eskwela’ for these schools,” Luistro adds, referring to DepEd’s yearly school maintenance activity.

DepEd and the local government unit have ensured a safe and learner-centered Palarong Pambansa. With the installation of mobile clinics and medical first-aids in every game venue, DepEd and the LGU are able to provide medical assistance to those who need it.

“The Department is working towards improving the safety of our athletes,” Umali said. He added that this starts with the teachers and school administrators who make sure that the schools are safe for the students.

DepEd finalizing details of 2014 Palarong Pambansa

Top Department of Education (DepEd) officials met Wednesday to finalize details of the 2014 Palarong Pambansa (National Games) to be held May 4 – 10 at Sta Rosa, Laguna. Items discussed are logistical requirements for regional delegates such as food and billeting quarters.

“I am reminding everyone to be sensitive to cultural and religious needs as this is a national event,” Education Secretary Br Armin Luistro FSC said. “Halal food, for example, must be made available to those who require it. “

The Palaro will be participated by almost 10,000 athletes from 17 regions, who will stay in Laguna for one week. The student athletes will be billeted in public schools near the venue, which were inspected Wednesday by the directors and sports coordinators of each region. The schools will be upgraded with the help of the host local government unit (LGU).

“The usual improvements that our schools undergo for Palaro are the installation of screens in classroom windows as well as a renovation of the bathroom facilities,” Assistant Secretary Tonisito Umali, Palarong Pambansa Secretary General, explained. “For schools in the host province, this is a quick ‘Brigada Eskwela’ that results in an upgrade of their physical facilities.”

Luistro, meanwhile, reistated the coaches and chaperones about the DepEd’s Child Protection Policy: “From the time they leave your province, through Palaro, and until they return they are under our care. Make sure that an adult is always present to supervise them,” adding that any decision regional officials make must take into consideration the welfare of the students, especially the younger ones.

The DepEd Secretary also asked everyone to continue the “Clean as you go” and garbage segregation policy for delegates. “Leave the host school cleaner than when you arrived.”

Palarong Pambansa is an annual event showcasing and promoting sportsmanship of Filipino learners. In May 2013, President Benigno Aquino III signed Republic Act No. 10588 or Palarong Pambansa Law institutionalizing the said event. This year’s Palaro is the first Palarong Pambansa under RA 10588.

DepEd, Laguna, ink agreement on 2014 Palarong Pambansa

Laguna will host the Palarong Pambansa 2014. Yesterday, January 13, the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Provincial Government of Laguna solidified their partnership to conduct the 2014 Palarong Pambansa through a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed by Laguna Governor Emilio Ramon “ER” Ejercito Jr. and Education Secretary Br Armin. A. Luistro FSC.

The MOU stipulated the duties and responsibilities of both parties to ensure a well- managed and professionally run Palaro.

According by DepEd Assistant Secretary for legal and legislative affairs Tonisito Umali, “the Province of Laguna will be the first host to the first Palarong Pambansa, which started in 1948, under the recently passed Palarong Pambansa Institutionalization Law or Republic Act 10588.”
Governor Ejercito expressed his excitement in hosting the Palarong Pambansa. “Today with the signing with the Department of Education, Laguna is set to host the country’s largest and premier sporting event.”

Ejercito explained that upon winning the bid, the Province had initiated ground work in preparing its nine-hectare Sports Complex in Sta. Cruz, rehabilitating 60 surrounding schools as billeting quarters, and approaching every major stakeholder to get on board.

“The Palarong Pambansa in Laguna will be the benchmark for future Palarong Pambansa,” Ejercito added.
Luistro thanked Ejercito for his support. “Masaya ako dahil sa pagpapakita ng suporta ng buong bayan ng Laguna.” He also expressed his desire for a “clean and green” Palaro, reiterating the Clean and Green Policy that had been in place since 2011.

The Secretary who had very fond memories in visiting Laguna, expressed his desire for a clean and green Palaro, reiterating the Clean and Green Policy that had been in place since the 2011 Palarong Pambansa. “May pangarap ako para sa Palarong Pambansa na naipasok namin sa mga nakaraang Palaro -- ang  pangangalaga sa kalikasan, an eco- friendly Palaro. Alam po namin na maraming basura pagkatapos ng bawat Palaro at ang kalikasan at kalinisan ng bawat bayan ay kailangang panatilihin."

The 2014 Palaro will also feature new spectacles such as the demonstration sports Wushu for Secondary boys and girls and Billiards for Secondary boys. This year will also see Olympic Wrestling make its debut.

DepEd is the lead agency in the conduct of the annual Palarong Pambansa in coordination with the Philippines Sports Commission and its National Sports Associations.

The program aims to promote physical education and sports as an integral part of learning, and hopes to develop and to mold a holistic youth who are socially responsible and globally-competitive.
