WWF-Philippines reinforces battle against unnecessary plastic with “No Plastics in Nature” initiative

In line with the 1st anniversary of World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Philippines’ #AyokoNgPlastik movement, the leading environmental organization launches the ‘No Plastics in Nature’Initiative, a larger approach that seeks to stop the flow of plastic waste in nature by 2030.

The problem with plastics has been escalating for decades, where the Philippines has been identified as the world’s third largest contributor of plastics in the ocean. Plastic pollution has always been a huge issue in the Philippines with the continuous generation of plastic wastes and poor waste management.

In 2016, global plastic production has reached 396 million metric tons, which translates to 53 kilograms of plastic per person on the planet. A third of this number has already become land or marine pollution and with a projected increase of 40% by 2030, an additional 104 million metric tons will leak into nature in a business as usual scenario. This poses harmful effects not only to our environment, but to human health as well. It is estimated that on average, people could be ingesting approximately 5 grams of plastic every week.

Recognizing the threat brought about by plastic pollution, WWF-Philippines rolled out the #AyokoNgPlastik movementlast year in hopes of addressing the issue by creating awareness among Filipinos to reduce dependence on single-use plastics such as straws, bags, bottles, and cups, among others.

This year, WWF-Philippines reinforces their campaign against unnecessary plastics by adopting the ‘No Plastics in Nature’Initiative, a global WWF approach that intends to stop the flow of plastics entering nature by 2030 through elimination of unnecessary plastics, doubling reuse, recycling, and recovery, and ensuring remaining plastic is sourced responsibly.

“With the ‘No Plastics in Nature’ Initiative, we are hoping to make the Philippines free of unnecessary plastic wastes, but we cannot do this alone, we need the help of everyone. Every individual, company, and institution should be mindful of the amount of plastics they produce and use daily, and take action accordingly, to make this goal a reality,'' said Joel Palma, WWF-Philippines President and CEO.

The initiative is a holistic approach consisting of four main strategies such as lobbying for a global legally binding agreement on plastic pollution, Plastic Smart Cities movement for cities and tourism destinations, Plastic Action (PACT) forbusinesses, and #AyokoNgPlastik for the general public.

The WWF network is continually pushing for a new international legally binding agreement to comprehensively address marine plastic pollution throughout the full life cycle from both production to disposal and recovery back into a circular loop. This is the network’s response to the agreement made at the recent 14th Conference of the Parties to the Basel Convention (COP 14) in Geneva, which stresses that the developing world could no longer be a plastic dumping ground and that any trade would require the prior consent from the receiving country.

Plastic Smart Cities, on the other hand, is a global movement of cities and tourism destinations that are fighting plastic pollution through improved collection, recycling, reduction of key waste plastics, and landfill management. Currently, the Philippines is working in six cities including Davao City, Digos City, Tagum City, Manila City, Parañaque City, Island Garden City of Samal, and four municipalities including Lupon, San Isidro, Sta. Cruz, and Donsol.

Meanwhile, WWF-Philippines was able to partner with at least 20 businesses for the sustainable journey movement where programs to reduce or eliminate single-use plastics in their supply chain system, workplace, and business operations were implemented. This program resulted in the prevention of over 1.5 million pieces of plastic waste from leaking into nature. Currently, WWF-Philippines is adopting the Plastic Action (PACT), which is a regional initiative on engaging businesses to take on a circular economy.

Finally, WWF-Philippines’ successful #AyokoNgPlastikmovement will continue to educate the general public about plastic pollution, its impacts, and how people can help in addressing it through the Facebook community and the recently launched AyokoNgPlastik microsite. Members of the movement have also demonstrated their commitment to this cause by signing the petition to support the call for a new legally binding international agreement on plastic pollution.

“The problem on plastic pollution will only continue to worsen if we don’t do anything about it. We are determined to address this issue to ensure that there will be no more plastic pollution in nature by 2030, and we hope to achieve that through the ‘No Plastics in Nature’ Initiative,” Palma reiterated.

WWF-Philippine’s ‘No Plastics in Nature’ Initiative was launched on the 5th of September at Shakey’s Quezon Avenue. Shakey’s Philippines is one of the newest partners and supporters of the #AyokoNgPlastik movement.

2014 Green Retail Agenda: Disaster-proofing firms discussed in SM forum

The 2014 GREEN RETAIL AGENDA The Business Case for Disaster Risk Reduction Manila, Philippines was held at SMX Convention Center in Pasay City, September 18, 2014.

In the past years, the SM Green Retail Agenda has focused more on climate change mitigation and, to a lesser degree, on adaptation. This year, with the increasing strength and frequency of natural disasters, it is important to create shared value within the private sector.

As a member of the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction – Private Sector Partnerships, SM Supermalls seeks to educate, create awareness, and emphasize action points within the private sector and other key stakeholders to ensure disasters will be prepared for and recovered from.

The theme for this year’s conference is The Business Case for Disaster Risk Reduction, emphasizing the need to prepare for the unforeseen to protect our businesses and the community as a whole. Our roster of speakers will focus on disaster risk resilience, preparedness, tools and best practices to strengthen and empower the retail business and community amidst natural disasters.

Dr. Renato Solidum Jr., director of Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS)
Disaster reduction experts discussed disaster preparedness measures to protect businesses and communities from natural calamities, new technologies in disaster management and communicating disaster preparations at the 2014 Green Retail Agenda, an annual symposium on sustainable business practices by SM Supermalls, held at SMX Convention Center in Pasay City.

Dr. Renato Solidum Jr., director of Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) shared his Topic in the symposium - "Earthquake Vulnerability of Metro Manila"

The Green Retail Agenda aims to address the lack of awareness on the relationship between business investment practices and disaster risks. SMPHI President Hans Sy underscored the need for businesses to understand that the growing environmental problem is relevant not just for the business community but for the economy as a whole.

“Trillions of dollars of new investments will pour into hazard-exposed regions. In most economies, the private sector is responsible for 70-85% of these new investments,” said Sy. “Therefore the decisions made by the private sector have far-reaching consequences on disaster risk accumulation and on underlying risk drivers.”
Atom Araullo, TV host and reporter of ABS-CBN

Speakers in the symposium included Dr. Renato Solidum Jr., director of Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS); Dr. Alfredo Mahar Lagmay, director of Project NOAH; Atom Araullo, TV host and reporter of ABS-CBN; Nathaniel Cruz, former director of Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA); Sharon Almanza, Deputy national treasurer of Department of Finance; Vince Rapisura, President and CEO of SEDPI, Inc.; Ramon Isberto, Public Affairs head of Smart Communications; and Lesley Cordero, Undersecretary of Office of the Presidential Adviser for Rehabilitation and Recovery. Mexican Ambassador to the Philippines Julio Camarena-Villaseñor keynoted the event and shared how Mexico's proactive approach on disasters have garnered deep rooted resilience of its people.

The Private Sector and Disaster Risk Reduction

In future, trillions of dollars of new business investment will pour into hazard-exposed regions, largely determining the outlook for disaster risk. In most economies, the private sector is responsible for 70–85 percent of this investment. Therefore, the decisions made by business in this respect have far-reaching consequences on disaster risk accumulation and on underlying risk drivers.

Yet, the relationship between business investment practices and disaster risk are poorly understood despite the issue being a growing problem for the business community and the economy as a whole.

Cosmos: A Space-Time Odyssey Redefines the Universe

National Geographic Channel (NGC) and FOX will be featuring a fantastic new series in March 2014 that will change the way human beings think of astronomical events and our place in the universe. Cosmos: A Space-Time Odyssey is a long-awaited sequel to the landmark series Cosmos: A Personal Voyage, written and hosted by renowned space visionary Carl Sagan in the 1980s.
The new show will premiere simultaneously on NGC and FOX on March 12 at 10 PM.

Cosmos: A Space-Time Odyssey tells us how human beings developed their concept of the laws of nature and their place in the universe. It offers a grand view of the cosmos as it covers their pursuit of knowledge and the ever-expanding boundaries of astrophysics.
Besides re-inventing elements of the original series, such as the Cosmic Calendar and the Ship of the Imagination, the show will use new modes of scientific storytelling to communicate the ideas that have helped build our identity within the vastness of space. Cosmos: A Space-Time Odyssey unfurls each scientific discovery in the fields of astrophysics and cosmology to reveal a bloom of knowledge that has allowed us to behold the grandeur of the universe.

This television event was spearheaded by Seth MacFarlane, creator of the animated series Family Guy, who may be considered by most an unlikely champion for such a project. An enthusiast of astronomy and astrophysics, MacFarlane proved he was dead serious about the project by teaming up with Sagan’s original collaborators on Cosmos: A Personal Voyage, Ann Druyan and Steven Soter. Fans of Sagan’s Cosmos can rest assured that his closest collaborators have made certain that the update stayed true to Sagan’s vision while revealing new insights about the universe in which we live.
Cosmos: A Space-Time Odyssey will be hosted by popular astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, author of New York Times bestsellers Death By Black Hole and Space Chronicles: Facing the Ultimate Frontier. Tyson has the power to make the most profound secrets of the universe understandable in the simplest terms while remaining a firm and credible authority over the subject matter.

Confident that Cosmos: A Space-Time Odyssey would become as celebrated as the Emmy Award and Peabody Award winning series from the ‘80s, both NGC and FOX in the US aired the show, and this rare occurrence will happen again in Asia on March 12. The Asian premiere of Cosmos: A Space-Time Odyssey will happen simultaneously on NGC and FOX, reaching a far wider audience and inspiring a whole new generation of astrophysicists.

Tune in to Cosmos: A Space-Time Odyssey on March 12, 2014 at 10 PM on National Geographic Channel and FOX to witness a groundbreaking television event!

Puerto Princesa Officially one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature

Puerto Princesa Underground River (PPUR) has been basically inaugurated as one of the New7Wonders of Nature and  was welcomed across the entire spectrum of the media in the Philippines. N7WN president Dr. Bernard Weber made the formal announcement during a press briefing at the Heritage Hotel in Pasay City last Saturday. Weber thanked Puerto Princesa City Mayor Edward S. Hagedorn for marshalling the active participation of Filipinos in ensuring the victory of PPUR in the tightly-contested race among unique places in all regions of the world.

Weber has predicted to convert over a commemorative plaque to the Philippine government which will be set up at a particular website in the metro. Another plaque will be set up in Palawan, near the PPUR access.

“Confirmation that the Puerto Princesa Underground River is one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature is welcome news indeed. Throughout the competition, Filipinos from all walks of life have given time, energy, and resources to this campaign,” said Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda.

Puerto Princesa Bishop Pedro Arigo, who said the PPUR’s status stresses the need to conserve and protect the environment. ‘We don’t need mining because tourism alone, using the pristine beauty of nature of Palawan creates livelihood for the people without destroying the environment,’ Arigo said at the sidelines of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines’ ongoing plenary assembly in Manila.”

This news might boost Philippine tourism and comes just weeks after the Department of Tourism unveiled its new tourism slogan ‘It’s more fun in the Philippines,’ to attract more foreign travelers.”

The PPUR was declared as one of the    New Seven Wonders of Nature  on November 11, 2011. The other six winners were Halong Bay in Vietnam; the Amazon of South America; Iguazu Falls between Argentina and Brazil; Jeju Island in South Korea; Komodo in Indonesia; and Table Mountain in South Africa.

Puerto Princesa Underground River is now confirmed as one of the New7Wonders of Nature!

It's now official! Puerto Princesa Underground River (PPUR) is now confirmed as one of the New7Wonders of Nature! Bernard Weber, Founder-President of New7Wonders, made the grand announcement.

He congratulated the people of the Philippines for supporting their national finalist in the global campaign.

“Fans of PPUR all over the world responded to his call for action by voting in record numbers and today’s confirmation is the well-earned reward for this extraordinary display of enthusiasm," said by Weber.

“When your very own President Aquino came out in support of the PPUR campaign, I knew that this country was taking the New7Wonders of Nature seriously,” said Weber.”

According to Edward Hagedorn, Mayor of Puerto Princesa,  this confirmation is wonderful news for Puerto Princesa, and a great example of how now its more fun to be in the Philippines,  in reference to the Department of Tourism’s “It’s more fun in the Philippines” slogan.

“World-wide exposure of our natural beauty on this level is critical both for tourism and for our image nationally and internationally,” said Mayor Hagedorn.

Puerto Princesa Underground River is located some 50km north of the city of Puerto Princesa, on Palawan island in the Philippines. It consists of a limestone karst mountain landscape, several large chambers containing significant formations of stalactites and stalagmites, and an 8.2 km. navigable underground river that winds through a cave before flowing directly into the West Philippine Sea. At the exit, a flawless lagoon is framed by ancient trees growing right to the water’s edge.

Beauty Stylist Celebrity Fanny Serrano for Novuhair: Nature's Answer to Hair Loss

A well known beauty stylist, hair care expert and celebrity Fanny Serrano shares the discovering proper and healthy caring for the hair, the best hair solution to help solve hair thinning and hair loss.

He said that he had a problem with hair loss and falling hair. While every morning as he see on his pillow lots of hair falls. He used to wear a small wig on top of his hair he called as "topper"  to hide his slowly receding hairline.

After tried many products , Fanny has found the solution to hair fall, NOVUHAIR. He said that he is blessed to discover NOVUHAIR Topical Scalp Lotion and NOVUHAIR Herbal Shampoo. He realized that this is not an ordinary beauty product but the real solution to hair problems., the natures's answer to hair loss.

Fanny also shares that caring with passion is his philosophy. He personally endorses the healthy hair formula based on his personal experiences of using the product.  He’s endorsing products only those that he believe and trust.

Aside from it helps stop hair fall, it nourishes the scalp, eliminates and prevents dandruff and scalp itchiness. It stimulate hair growth.

An advice to those who want to try NOVUHAIR products is to use it twice a day, in the morning and at night.

Here’s more, the myths, truths, and untruths, as detailed by medical expert for us to understand hair fall.

Hair fall: truths and untruths

Aside from old age, what’s one thing we enjoy noticing in others but wholly deny when it happens to ourselves? Old age’s sister: hair loss.

That’s right: that patch of space somewhere on your scalp, usually characterized by an unwelcome sheen and the threat of more of it to come.

Yet fear not, for every problem – perceived or otherwise – comes with it a solution. Before jumping over to that however, let us understand a couple of things about hair loss – the myths, truths, and how our proposed solution busts all the untruths, as detailed by  a hair and scalp medical expert in one of the leading hospitals in the Philippines.

Myth No. 1: Wearing hats can cause hair loss
This is untrue, unless the hats you wear – ever so often, and every day – are so tight, they cut off blood circulation to your scalp.

Myth No. 2: I suffer from hair loss – my hair falls out every day!
It’s natural to have your hair fall out every day. While it differs for everyone, a person loses an average of 50-100 hairs a day. Such only becomes a problem when the hair loss is frequent and in great volumes: upon waking from bed and noticing a handful of hair on your pillow, and during baths and showers when your tub gets clogged, for instance.

Myth No. 3: Shampooing every day causes hair loss
Again, each person differs when it comes to hair care and maintenance, so some may require everyday washing, while for others, once every two days is enough. Generally however, there is nothing about shampoos that may make it a cause for going bald.

Myth No. 4: Balding genes primarily come from the mother’s side of the family
Hair loss is genetic. Theoretically, you have an equal chance of getting it from your father’s side just as much as your mother’s side, even if science suggests a generally stronger inheritance of traits from the mother’s side.

Myth No. 5: There is no solution to hair loss
This may have been true in the past, but such is no longer the case today. Take it from beauty icon and hair care expert Fanny Serrano, who’s had the privilege not of suffering the problem himself, but of discovering the solution during a time when nothing seemed to be working.

Having built a name for himself in the beauty industry, losing hair was the last thing Fanny wanted to endure. Trying out every treatment at his disposable, then, was the most natural thing to do. When none of them worked, going to all the trouble of commissioning a wig was the next most sensible step to maintaining his image as an image doctor.

Fortunately for him, though, it was only a matter of time before fate revealed itself to be on his side. Stumbling upon Novuhair Topical Scalp Lotion one day, Fanny thought it worth another try. After all, by that point, the only thing he had to lose was his wig.

And sure enough, that was all he lost. Novuhair worked.

Made with natural, herbal ingredients including biotin, panax ginseng, moringa oleifera, and lavender, rosemary, peppermint, lemon grass, and virgin coconut oils, Novuhair contains chemically compatible properties that detoxify the scalp, limit hair fall, and stimulate hair growth by improving blood circulation to the scalp and increasing nutrition to hair follicles. All these ingredients are the real thing, effectively combined to remedy the true causes of hair fall. Studies have shown 100% of the respondents revealed no adverse side effects with continuous use. The lotion is clinically safe to use for 12-year-olds up.

Today, the myths and misconceptions have been busted. And yet they remain secondary. After all, what’s important is what everyone wants, and needs: a solution to their problem. And for a year now, that solution has been around for them to find: Novuhair Topical Scalp Lotion, nature’s answer to hair loss.

Novuhair is available at all Mercury Drug, Watsons, Rose Pharmacy, South Star, Manson and Cory Quirino World of Wellness stores, and online on www.regaloservice.com. Visit www.novuhair.com or call 413-6570 or 0922-883-0575 for more details.
