Blessed Mother Teresa has been declared Saint Teresa of Calcutta

Mother Teresa has been declared Saint Teresa of Calcutta on September 4, 2016, the eve of her death anniversary by Pope Francis at Vatican City.

Mother Teresa has been declared a saint by Pope Francis on Sunday at a canonization ceremony held in Vatican City. The canonization on September 4 comes on the eve of her 19th death anniversary.

For much of her life, Mother Teresa was known as the "living saint," she will now be known as Saint Teresa of Calcutta.

After winning the Nobel peace prize in 1979 for her work with the poor in Calcutta, India, Mother Teresa built 600 orphanages and shelters around the world. Mother Teresa died on September 5, 1997. On October 19, 2003, Pope John Paul II beatified Mother Teresa of Calcutta.

A symbol of service and compassion, Mother Teresa showed the world the extraordinary power of love. Her life is “an epitome of grace, compassion and love”.

Mother Teresa dedicated her entire life to serving the poorest of the poor as well as the destitute and forsaken. She saw herself as ‘small pencil in the hands of the Lord’ and went about her work quietly, offering smiles and warm human gestures

Mother Teresa inspire many to give their ‘hearts to love and their hands to serve.’ Her saintly life will forever inspire humanity to commit to the cause of those who have no voice, no community, no home and no love.
"Let us imitate Mother Teresa who made works of mercy the guide of her life and the path towards holiness"
- Pope Francis

At the Vatican, a portrait of Mother Teresa is displayed on the facade of St. Peter’s Basilica. Mother Teresa is shown in her signature blue-trimmed white sari. The portrait was commissioned by the Knights of Columbus and painted by American artist Chas Fagan,

Netherlands, Philippines strengthen ties through collaboration

Sustainability through innovations – key to international development

The Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands introduces “Inspire Innovation: Leading Sustainable Innovations toward a Progressive World,” a series of events geared toward the promotion of innovative solutions for international sustainable development.

This year, the Netherlands marks its 65 years of diplomatic ties and 150 years of consular relations with the Philippines through a celebration entitled “Inspire Innovation: Leading Sustainable Innovations toward a Progressive World”. The celebration will focus on promoting innovative solutions to sustain international development, capitalizing on the common interests of Dutch and Filipinos. It will feature a series of lectures, a film festival, and a fashion design exchange programme.

“The Philippines has always been the Netherlands’ partner in pushing for sustainable international development. Our relationship has evolved into a more collaborative form where we both work together to achieve mutually beneficial economic goals. This year’s celebration is a testament to that”, said Netherlands Ambassador to the Philippines Marion Derckx.

The celebration had its official kick off in February and will continue with a lecture by visionary artist Lucas de Man in March. De Man is the founder and artistic leader of Amsterdam-based Company New Heroes, director at Het Zuidelijk Toneel, and presenter of the art television show Kunstuur. His lecture entitled “In Search of Europe” highlights his travels to 17 cities in eight countries within 30 days where he interviewed young artists and creative professionals who are trying to effect positive change.

De Man’s lecture will happen on March 15 in UP Diliman; March 17 in UP Iloilo; and March 18 in UP Cebu.

Succeeding lectures will focus on topics including green design, food security, disaster risk reduction, peace and community building, and sustainable cities and will be held in various locations in the Philippines.

A film festival featuring Dutch and Filipino films will also be held in partnership with DAKILA, an organization of artists and advocates building a movement of heroism towards social transformation. The films will highlight the two nations’ commitment in promoting human rights as well as sustainable innovations that will help resolve global challenges.

Recognizing that creativity can inspire innovation, an exchange programme for Dutch and Filipino fashion students will also take place in partnership with Slim's Fashion and Art School. The students will undergo a collaborative training to come up with a collection of combined Dutch and Filipino artistry by weaving unique fabrics and techniques from Netherlands and the Philippines. The students’ creation will then be featured in a grand culminating fashion show in October.

The celebration will set the stage for deeper and more meaningful collaboration between the Philippines and the Netherlands through creative and innovative means. “We are very excited to travel the Philippines and share this meaningful celebration with every Filipino. We believe that by inspiring innovations, we are able to do our part in promoting a progressive world,” shared Derckx.

Nelson Mandela International Day

Nelson Mandela, former president of South Africa and Nobel Peace Prize winner
(Photo: AFP/Getty Images)
Today we celebrate Nelson Mandela International Day, a global movement to honour the great man’s public service and diplomacy, a day of service celebrated on July 18, Mandela's birthday.

During his long life, Mandela inspired countless individuals. In 2009, the United Nations declared July 18th, his birthday, Nelson Mandela International Day. The day was unanimously approved in 2009 by the U.N. General Assembly. It was created to honor Mandela and inspire others to carry on his efforts to "take responsibility for making the world a better place, one small step at a time," according to a statement from the Nelson Mandela Foundation Initiative.

An Interactive Google Doodle pays tribute to Mandela who has been called both '"The World's Most Famous Political Prisoner" and "South Africa's Great Black Hope"

No one is born hating another person because of the colour of his skin, or his background, or his religion.

People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.

What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.

Education is the most powerful weapon we can use to change the world.

For to be free is not merely to cast off one's chains, but to live in a way that respects and
enhances the freedom of others.

The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time you fall.

During his time in prison, Mandela was restricted to a 2m x 2.5m cell, with nothing but a bedroll on the floor and a bucket for sanitation in it. He was consigned to hard labour and was, at first, only allowed one visitor and one letter every six months.

Nelson Mandela received honorary degrees from more than 50 international universities.

Mandela, the former president of South Africa and Nobel Peace Price recipient, died at the age of 95 on Dec. 5, 2013. This is the first time the day has been celebrated since his death.

Let us honour his memory by doing our part in making a positive change and to work towards making this world a better place.

Happy #MandelaDay

Dubai is building 'Mall of the World'

Dubai, the glitzy emirate known for its love of grandiose projects said it is now planning to build the biggest mall on the planet, the Mall of the World!

The world's first temperature-controlled city, Mall of the World, located along Sheikh Zayed Road in Dubai, occupying 48 million square feet, complete with theme park, theatres, five miles of covered streets and 100 hotels. It will also contain health resorts, a Celebration Steet modelled on the Ramblas boulevard in Barcelona and 'retail streets network' that will stretch over four-and-a-half miles. In fact, the ambitious emirate has dubbed the project a 'temperature-controlled pedestrian city'.

The shopping mall itself will occupy eight million square feet, housed below a glass dome, with other attractions extending beyond the central shopping area. The grand project is part of Dubai's bid to become a year-round tourism destination, despite soaring temperatures in summer that can reach nearly 50C.

The new mall, which will be a city-within-a-city, will be the emirate's chance to attract visitors even in the height of the summer, by providing a completely climate-controlled experience. The plan is to create a cultural area, with theatres hosting shows at West End and Broadway levels, as well as a network of streets that will be entirely climate controlled. The eight million square foot shopping centre will be housed under a dome, while the streets will also be covered so that tourists can shop without getting too hot in the relentless heat of the summer months.

In the cooler winter months, the dome will open, allowing people to shop in the fresh air, closing as the summer heats up.

It will also be a short drive to the world's tallest tower, the Burj Khalifa, which stands at 2,717ft.

Sheikh Mohammad stated: 'Our ambitions are higher than having seasonal tourism - tourism is key driver of our economy and we aim to make the UAE an attractive destination all-year long."

'This is why we will start working on providing pleasant temperature-controlled environments during the summer months.'

Dubai Holding, the developer owned by Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum said that the project "will comprise the largest indoor theme park in the world" under a glass dome that would be opened during winter.

The seven-kilometre (4.35 mile)-long promenades connecting the facilities would also be covered and air-conditioned during summer, it added.

Dubai hopes the "Mall of the World" can attract more than 180 million visitors each year.

United Arab Emirates is known for its numerous malls and many hotels, including the Dubai Mall, touted as the world's largest shopping, leisure and entertainment destination. It is also home to the world's tallest tower, Burj Khalifa.

Dubai has established itself as a global hub for air transport and transit trade, as well as a regional financial centre.

And it beat off opposition from Brazil, Russia and Turkey in November to win the right to host the World Expo trade fair in 2020.

The emirate's economy was hit in 2009 by the global financial crisis, but it has since made a strong comeback, thanks to growth in the trade, transport and tourism sectors.

The Philippines' SM Mall of Asia has 407,000 square meters of total floor area, while SM MegaMall has over 500,000 square meters of total floor area.

SM Prime, the country's largest mall operator, expects to have a network of 50 malls in the Philippines with a gross floor area of 6.6 million square meters by the end of 2014.

It's more fun in the Philippines!

Boracay Photo: Myrns Roman
Rough Guides 2014 edition, cited Philippines’ natural places that are “not to miss” which include the islands of Boracay, the limestone islands El Nido in Palawan, the coasts of Coron that hidesbeautiful beaches and pristine mountain lakes, and Puerto Gallera.

The Rough Guides, known for its travel references, has also recommended a must-visit in Chocolate Hills in Bohol, despite being partly damaged by the 7.2-magnitude earthquake the struck the province last year. It also recommended to visitors to see the tiny primate Tarsiers in the region.

“Soak up the bizarre landscape of Bohol’s iconic Chocolate Hills, conical brown-green mounds said to be the calcified tears of a broken-hearted giant,” Rough Guides said.

Rough Guides also suggest to tourists to also try to explore the country’s beautiful mountains and the majestic top views they offier, including the perfectly-coned Mt. Mayon and mountain lakes in Mt. Pinatubo. Rough Guide describes the crystal-clear waters of Apo Reef Marine Natural Park in Mindoro as a “scuba diver’s dream.”

Aside from places, tourist should also explore the traditions and colorful festivals in the country like the Ati-Atihan Festival on Panay to see the “indigenous dress and learn tribal dances,” the travel advisor said, adding that if one gets exhausted from the heat of the sun, a tall glass of Halo-halo, a local sweet icy dessert, will quench tourist’ thirst.

Rough Guides also encouraged European travelers to visit the Philippines, citing direct flights from London to Manila.

“New direct flights from London to Manila mean that it’s now easier to get there from the UK,” it said.

National Geographic Channel will be broadcasting Comet Of The Century

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC CHANNEL TURNS SPOTLIGHT ON “COMET OF THE CENTURY”

In anticipation of what could be one of the biggest astronomical events in our lifetime, National Geographic Channel will be broadcasting Comet Of The Century, a show that will introduce the world to Comet ISON as it passes near Earth by the end of the month of November this year.

The special will combine CGI and breathtaking images captured by cutting-edge technology to show why the coming of Comet ISON is considered by many astronomers to be a once-in-a-lifetime cosmic event.

Comet ISON is bigger than Australia, its head measuring an impressive 4,900km across and dust trail extending more than 91,000km – more than twice the circumference of planet Earth! It is set to shoot by one of the harshest environments in our solar system, the sun, on November 28th, creating a solar slingshot by passing by Mars and Earth before going around the sun and whizzing back.
What makes this comet’s visit particularly interesting is the fact that our sun may rip it apart, a phenomenon that will provide viewers from Earth with a fantastic display of light. Alternatively, if Comet ISON survives its proximity to the sun, we will be seeing it blazing through our skies for some time after the event.

Comet ISON is over 4 billion years old and is hurtling through space at the speed of 684,000 kilometers per hour, allowing it to cover the distance between New York and Los Angeles in the US in under 20 seconds. It is brighter than other comets seen at the same distance. Besides giving the astronomers and stargazers alike an amazing illusion, Comet ISON is being watched by the most prestigious telescopes in the world in the hopes of providing scientists with crucial scientific data that could help them understand more about comets, the sun and the origin of our solar system.

Comet Of The Century will be featuring experts such as Adam McKay, one of the first astronomers to use spectroscopy with an earth-based telescope to observe the head of ISON, Karl Battams, a scientist from the British Naval Research Laboratory, and Gareth Williams, a scientist working with the Minor Planet Centre, which is responsible for keeping track of asteroids, comets and natural satellites. Scientists will be giving a historical perspective of Comet ISON along with greater insight into the nature of comets and how our understanding of intergalactic phenomena has developed throughout history.

Comet ISON potentially carries a significant amount of information that may answer many questions, such as whether comets brought water to the newly born Earth, or if Comet ISON contains any organic molecules, which are the building blocks of our existence. Comet Of The Century explains these queries to viewers and draws them into the fascinating world of astronomy and how it links to musings on our very existence.

Catch the premiere on November 27, Wednesday at 10pm only on the National Geographic Channel!
