Petron Turbo Diesel Field Test Delivers Outstanding Results

As a fuel innovator, industry leader Petron Corporation is continuously looking for ways to provide Filipino motorists with the best possible products in the market. Having achieved recognition as the best gasoline in the country for its Petron Blaze 100 Euro 6, the company’s R&D team recently enhanced the formulation of its premium Petron Turbo Diesel to be the best diesel in the Philippines. Thus, last January, the Petron TriAction Performance Run – Diesel Edition took off from Manila to Baguio for a week-long series of tests on challenging mountain roads from Baguio to Ambuklao, and then from Baguio to Halsema, the highest elevation in the Philippine highway system, before finishing with a fuel economy run from Baguio back to Manila.

Outstanding Performance Across Vehicle Types

Faced with the challenge of measuring improvements in engine power, engine response, and acceleration, test drivers were asked to rate the performance of different diesel fuels in a stringent double blind procedure. Using a different diesel fuel each day for four days, the drivers drove the same winding, uphill-downhill route from Baguio City to Ambuklao Dam and back. All these while keenly observing whether there was an immediate engine response when going uphill after slowing down on a sharp curve, or if the engine does not feel strained when carrying a full load, or if the vehicle is able to accelerate smoothly even on long uphill climbs.

To ensure that Petron Turbo Diesel is able to deliver optimum performance across vehicle types, different vehicle categories and brands were included in the field test. The test vehicles consisted of a BMW X1, a European luxury subcompact crossover; a Toyota Innova, the market leading utility vehicle; a Honda CR-V Diesel, the 2017 Car of the Year-Philippines; a Nissan Urvan, a popular people-mover; a Ford Everest and Ford Ranger to represent the American brand; Isuzu mu-X and Isuzu D-MAX for the leader in commercial vehicles; and a Ssangyong Tivoli XLV, a Korean SUV model.

When asked to rank the test fuels—designated only by letter codes—in the daily runs, the consolidated results indicated that Petron Turbo Diesel was rated by the drivers as delivering the best performance in terms of power, engine response, and acceleration.

Improved Fuel Economy

Following the test protocol of the Department of Energy (DOE) Fuel Economy Run, the vehicles traversed some 230.7-kilometers from the Petron station on Kisad Road, Baguio City, going through the relatively busy Marcos Highway, then on to the Tarlac-Pangasian-La Union Expressway (TPLEX), the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX), the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX), ending at Petron NLEX Southbound in Bocaue, Bulacan.

All vehicles delivered outstanding results, averaging 20% better than the official Fuel Efficiency Ratings (FER) posted in the 2017 DOE Fuel Economy Run. For example, the BMW X1 achieved 34.08km/L, which is 43% better than the 23.88km/L recorded in the DOE Run. The Honda CR-V’s fuel consumption improved by 19% to 28.52km/L from 23.96km/L. The fuel efficiency results were similarly impressive for the other vehicles, as follows: Ford Everest – 27.21km/L; Toyota Innova – 23.4km/L; Ssangyong Tivoli XLV – 22.6km/L; Isuzu mu-X – 19.97km/L; Isuzu D=MAX – 18.44km/L; Nissan Urvan – 17.22km/L; and Ford Ranger – 17.08km/L.

The Petron TriAction Performance Run – Diesel Edition was observed and certified by representatives from Department of Energy (DOE), Automobile Association of the Philippines (AAP), and the Car Awards Group Inc. (CAGI).

Enhanced Diesel Formulation

Petron Turbo Diesel has been further enhanced as a high-performance, technologically-advanced fuel. With robust multi-functional additives in its improved formulation, this superior diesel fuel has been designed to unleash the full power and optimum performance of the most advanced and sophisticated diesel engines. Petron Turbo Diesel has high ignition quality and combustibility that maximize fuel energy conversion for maximum engine power and efficiency. It has the ability to effectively clean up and keep clean the fuel injection system to deliver exceptional protection and sustained optimum performance.

Like all other Petron fuels, the enhanced formulation of Petron Turbo Diesel allows motorists to enjoy greater benefits from Petron’s TriAction Advantage which are: (1) better engine protection for longer engine life; (2) better mileage for longer drives; and (3) better power.

In real world driving conditions, through the most challenging uphill-downhill and winding terrains, Petron Turbo Diesel has proven that Filipino motorists can enjoy more savings on maintenance and fuel consumption while getting the best driving experience from their vehicle.

Petron Blaze 100 Euro 6 tested and proven in marathon performance run

The 2017 Petron TriAction Performance Run flagged off from the Petron NLEX-Marilao service station on its northward journey to Ilocos Norte before traversing the entire length of Luzon down to Sorsogon and back to Manila. Eighteen vehicles of various makes were tested under hypermiling and normal driving mode. More than 50 participants were involved in the run, including official observers from the Department of Energy (DOE) and Automobile Association Philippines (AAP).

Since 2005, market leader Petron Corporation has tested its cutting-edge fuels in real world driving conditions to validate its laboratory findings. This has resulted in fuel innovations that best match the requirements of Filipino motorists, for all types of vehicles, on all types of terrain.

Following the certifications issued by leading global laboratories which rated Petron’s Blaze 100 Euro 6 as surpassing the most stringent fuel technology and emission benchmark in the world, the Philippines’ most advanced gasoline was field tested in a marathon performance run across the length of Luzon.

Fueled by Petron Blaze 100 Euro 6, hypermilers Raymund Dimapilis (right) and Enrico Mabunay (left) traveled an impressive 33.69 kilometers per liter on a Honda City 1.5 E CVT.

With Honda as the official vehicle partner, test teams were deployed in two driving modes—hypermiling mode to test fuel efficiency, and normal mode to test the overall driving experience. The six-day run saw the test teams driving up to Ilocos Norte and then all the way down to Sorsogon, before turning back to return to Metro Manila. For the hypermilers, the challenge was to see how far they could go on one full tank of Petron Blaze 100 Euro 6. In normal mode, the cars were heavily loaded with luggage and other equipment, and drivers were asked to drive as they saw fit depending on the terrain and traffic conditions.

Driving a Honda City 1.5 E CVT, the hypermiling team of Raymund Dimapilis and Enrico Mabunay were able to travel an impressive 33.69 kilometers for every liter. According to Dimapilis, their team did not expect to go the distance, saying: “There are a lot of write-ups that say there is no need to get a high-octane fuel beyond the manufacturer’s recommendation. However, this run proved that having a high-performance fuel has its benefits—in our case, fuel economy—when used properly. Another factor is that Blaze is 100% gasoline, so we had additional energy available to go farther.”

On another Honda City 1.5 E CVT, hypermilers James Benjamin Gaston and John Abraham Zayco achieved 33.19-km/L. Having participated in previous Petron test runs, Gaston has the following observations: “Blaze had a significant improvement on power. This was clearly felt in the ability of the car and engine to slowly accelerate from 21-kph up to 35-kph using a steady engine rpm of 1,000. This significantly boosted the hypermiling technique of a steady crawl at a thrifty rpm in urban areas where stop-and-go driving and spiking rpms are the greatest factor in losing fuel efficiency.”

Further, he notes that while this was not so obvious to the driver at higher speeds and rpm, the engine computer continued to show good fuel economy. “This can be attributed to the better power delivered by Blaze as the engine does not need as much fuel to achieve the same power necessary to maintain cruising speeds,” he explains.

Meanwhile, Antonio Siddayao and Lester Constantino, on-board a Honda CR-v 2.0 AT were testing the new Blaze formulation in normal driving mode. Over the course of the six-day run, Siddayao reports: “At our first fill-up, we did not notice any significant change. After our second refill, the engine response was noticeable and we took note of our fuel consumption from thereon. From Laoag, Ilocos Norte, to San Fernando, La Union, we only consumed 12-liters, despite some sudden accelerations and averaging highway speeds of 60-90kph.” Driving through the varying terrains and traffic conditions in the southern corridor of Luzon until the finish in Naga, driver logs showed that the team used about 185-liters on 2,367-kilometers. That’s like traveling from Manila to Baguio 9-1/2 times on just three fill-ups of the Honda CRV’s 58-liter fuel tank. “Not bad for a 2.0-liter SUV,” Siddayao concludes.

According to Petron R&D, due to its pure formulation and very high octane, Petron Blaze 100 Euro 6 gives motorists six advantages and benefits, namely: (1) improved fuel efficiency; (2) powerful engine performance and acceleration; (3) guaranteed cleaner engines on just one full tank; (4) improved combustion with its unique fuel and additive formulations; (5) significantly reduced harmful emissions; and (6) reduced maintenance costs (e.g., longer catalyst life for emission system).

Based on the fuel efficiency results and driver feedback, these are tangible benefits that ordinary motorists can experience with Petron Blaze 100 Euro 6. These also confirm the results obtained in tests conducted by leading global laboratories in Singapore, the United Kingdom, and Germany.
The hypermiling team of James Benjamin Gaston (right) and John Abraham Zayco (left) achieved 33.19 km/L with Petron Blaze 100 Euro 6 on another Honda City 1.5 E CVT.

Samples of Blaze 100 Euro 6 were taken from Petron’s Bataan refinery and randomly from its stations by SGS, the world’s leading inspection, verification, testing, and certification company. The samples were then sent to SGS laboratories in the United Kingdom, Singapore and the Philippines. All samples tested met specifications (EN 228:2012) for Euro 6-technology vehicles.

Petron also sent samples of this innovative product to ISP The Testing Institute, a leading engine and vehicle testing laboratory for fuels and lubricants development. ISP conducted a Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) test with Blaze 100 Euro 6 and found it did not cause carbon deposits in GDI engines. GDI is a more advanced engine technology that addresses fuel economy and emissions. It is being used in newer European, American, and Asian car models.

Millbrook Proving Ground, which provides validation and engineering services in the automotive, transport, and defense industries, also tested Blaze 100 Euro 6. It conducted an Intake Valve Deposit (IVD) test and found Blaze 100 Euro 6 cleaned over 70% of engine deposits in 60 hours. Millbrook UK said Blaze 100 Euro 6 passed the “Euro 6b” emission standard— the strictest emission standard in the world. IVD tests apply to Port Fuel Injection engines which are widely used the Philippines.

“We are proud that Blaze 100 Euro 6 meets the world’s best environmental and fuel technology standards. With the highest octane rating but the lowest sulfur content, it is the best gasoline in the market by far in terms of power, efficiency, engine protection, and reduced emissions,” Petron President & CEO Ramon S. Ang said.

“Since our fuels are locally-produced and formulated in our refinery, we can guarantee the quality and consistency of Petron fuels. We will continue to innovate and lead in fuels technology so we can put more savings in our customers’ pockets while improving air quality across the nation,” he concluded.

Petron delivers most advanced fuel to PH market, blazed 100 Euro 6

Market leader Petron Corporation now has the cleanest and most advanced gasoline in the Philippine market that even surpasses Euro 6 standards, the most stringent fuel technology and emission benchmark in the world today.

Petron’s Blaze 100 Euro 6 was rigorously tested and certified by leading global laboratories and engine rating experts namely SGS, Millbrook Proving Ground in the United Kingdom, and ISP The Testing Institute in Germany.

Due to its pure formulation and very high octane, Blaze 100 Euro 6 gives motorists’ six advantages and benefits:

-  Improved fuel efficiency;
- Powerful engine performance and acceleration;
- Guaranteed cleaner engines on just one full tank;
- Improved combustion with its unique fuel and additive formulation;
- Significantly reduced harmful emissions;
- Reduced maintenance costs (e.g. Longer catalyst life for emission system)

Tests showed Blaze 100 Euro 6 contains less than 3 ppm (parts per million) sulfur, compared to the Euro 6 standard of 10 ppm maximum. Euro 4 fuels, which is the mandated standard in the country, contains up to 50 ppm. Blaze 100 Euro 6 is available in nearly 300 Petron service stations nationwide.

The Euro 6 standard is the most stringent global emission standard. To qualify, fuel should have significantly reduced particle numbers, particulate matter, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and hydrocarbons in vehicle emissions. Particle number (PN) is the additional criterion that separates Euro 5 and Euro 6 fuel standards. Blaze 100 Euro 6 passed the PN tests with flying colors as it was three times cleaner than the limit.
Petron is official fuel for 12th BOSS Ironman Challenge 2017

The organizers, the BMW BOSS Club, is the only motorcycle club in the Philippines recognized by the BMW International Council.

Oil industry leader Petron Corporation is continuing its support for the ultimate motorsport endurance event, the BOSS Ironman Challenge. Founded by the BMW Owners Society of Saferiders (BOSS), the challenge is the first of its kind to be organized in the country, debuting in 2005.

Now running on its twelfth consecutive year, the 2017 staging will kick-off at midnight of January 14. The event is open to motorcycles with engine displacement of 400cc and over, and any type of roadworthy vehicle.

Billed as a test of personal endurance and not a race, the BOSS Ironman Challenge will not have any winners or even a published list of finishers. Instead, participants are expected to gain the psychic reward of knowing that they were able to tackle the grueling 24-hour ride across 1,200-kilometers, while testing their road safety and navigation skills and, at the same time, proving their will to endure.

The 1,200-kilometer route kicks off from Clark, Pampanga, traversing the central and northern Luzon provinces of Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Nueva Vizcaya, Isabela, Cagayan, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Benguet, Pangasinan, and Tarlac, to finish in Pampanga. With over 2,000 service stations nationwide, Petron is the ideal strategic partner for this event, as participants are assured of their fuel requirements through the entire run. In fact, due to their strategic sites, four of the five checkpoints will be at Petron service stations.

On the part of Petron, the endurance run is a worthy proving ground of their world class fuels and lubricants, particularly the new Petron Blaze 100 Euro 5 gasoline, the first Euro 5 standard fuel in the country. A breakthrough in fuels technology, Petron Blaze 100 Euro 5 contains significantly less sulfur and is 500% cleaner than standard Euro 4 fuels. It delivers the following benefits: (1) optimal power and acceleration due to extremely high octane and performance additives; (2) exceptional engine cleanliness because of its high quality base fuel and fully synthetic detergent additives; (3) better fuel economy due to its friction modifier and combustion improver additives; and (4) lower emissions and longer catalytic converter life.

Some of the outreach projects and beneficiaries of the BOSS Ironman Challenge, whose advocacies include health care, education, and disaster relief.

While Petron Blaze 100 Euro 5 is recommended for high-end, high-performance vehicles such as the high-displacement big bikes, other vehicles will enjoy the same power and improved fuel economy because of its special formulation. For diesel-powered vehicles, Petron Turbo Diesel offers the tri-action advantages of better engine protection for longer engine life, better mileage for longer drives, and better power.

These are best matched with Petron’s range of world-class engine oils—Petron Ultron for gasoline engines, Petron Rev-X for diesel engines, and Petron Sprint 4T for motorcycle engines—to derive optimum efficiency and reliable performance through the punishing 24-hour non-stop run.

Proceeds of the 12th BOSS Ironman Challenge 2017 will go to worthwhile advocacies in health care, education, and disaster relief. Some of the projects that have already benefited include: (a) clothes and educational materials to the municipality of Balbasan, Kalinga Apayao; (b) refurbished computers, raincoats and slippers in Besao, Mt. Province; (c) medical and dental missions at Bulacao, Mindoro Oriental; San Mateo, Rizal; Calauan, Laguna; Botolan, Zambales; Catbalogan, Samar; San Miguel, Bulacan; Santa Maria, Bulacan; Abatan, Mt. Province, among others; and (d) relief assistance during various calamities.

Petron launches Euro 5 in the Philippines

After successfully launching a full range of locally-produced Euro 4 fuels almost a year ago, the country’s leading oil company Petron Corporation marked another breakthrough in fuels technology with the introduction of the Blaze 100 Euro 5 – the first Euro 5 standard fuel in the country.

Blaze 100 Euro 5 contains has significantly less sulfur, 10 ppm (parts per million) compared to other Euro 4 fuels (50 ppm). It is 500% cleaner than standard Euro 4 fuels. It also has less benzene (less than 1% of volume) – a known carcinogen – compared to the Philippine standard which allows up to 2% by volume in gasoline. It is now available nationwide.

High sulfur levels in fuel, when combined with water vapor, can harm the environment and cause corrosive wear on valve guides and cylinder liners, leading to premature engine failure.

With significantly low sulfur content and advanced additives technology, the high-performance Blaze 100 Euro 5 delivers the following benefits:
  • Optimal power and acceleration due to extremely high octane and performance additives;
  • Exceptional engine cleanliness because of its high quality base fuel and fully synthetic detergent additive;
  • Better fuel economy due to its friction modifier and combustion improver additives; and
  • Lower emissions and longer catalytic converter life.

While Blaze 100 Euro 5 is recommended for high-end, high-performance vehicles, other vehicles will get the same power and improved fuel economy because of its special formulation.

“Petron is proud to introduce another revolutionary fuel specially formulated for Philippine driving conditions,” Petron President and CEO Ramon S. Ang said. “With the highest octane rating but the lowest sulfur content, Petron Blaze 100 Euro 5 is the best gasoline in the market by far in terms of power, efficiency, and reduced emissions.

“We will continue to innovate and lead in fuels technology so we can put more savings in our customers’ pockets while improving air quality across the nation,” Mr. Ang added.

Petron’s Blaze 100 Euro 5 was “road-tested” recently as the official fuel of the Philippine Leg of the 2016 Formula 4 South East Asia (F4/SEA) Championship at the Clark International Speedway in Pampanga.

First introduced back in-late 2010, PETRON BLAZE 100 is the first and only gasoline in the country with a Research Octane Number (RON) of 100. With 100 octane, it has exceptional resistance to "engine knocking" that results in uneven fuel burn, greater fuel consumption, and even engine damage.

Petron Corporation is the largest oil refining and marketing company in the Philippines and is a leading player in the Malaysian market. It has a combined refining capacity of 268,000 barrels-per-day and produces a full range of world-class fuels and petrochemicals. It has over 2,8oo service stations where it retails gasoline and diesel. Petron is dedicated and passionate about its vision to be the leading provider of total customer solutions in the energy sector and its derivative businesses.
