Globe myBusiness helps SMEs become future proof

Globe myBusiness has brought its valuable expertise and tried-and-tested products and solutions to the country’s favorite tourist destination, Boracay, to help small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) become future-proof.

Participants of the Globe myBusiness workshop for Boracay SMEs

The workshop, dubbed as Globe myBusiness Digital Tools to Future-Proof Your Business, centered on the most prominent industries currently flourishing in Boracay such as tourism, hotels and accommodations, restaurants and food establishments, and retail.

In the four-day event, entrepreneurs, managers and various other staff members from all over the island were able to pick up a wealth of knowledge that allowed them to better understand technology and what it can do for them.

Derrick Heng, Senior Advisor for Globe myBusiness said:  “Employing technology in business isn’t instantaneous. Rather, it’s a step-by-step process. It may take years for a business to fully maximize its digital potential, but the results are definitely worth the challenge.  Globe myBusiness is here to assist entrepreneurs every step of the way.”

As a first takeaway from the workshop, the participants learned about the importance of social media which is the simplest way to use technology for business.  Through social media, entrepreneurs can spread word about their business, get feedback, and contact their clients or customers in the blink of an eye.

“Digital marketing was the most important lesson for me, that you really need to make the most out of it through social media,” said Lourdes A. Ramirez of Secret Garden Boracay.

June Myrrh Dueñas and Dane Aldeguer of Isla Chicas Travel Consultancy added:  “We understand that everything’s online, and everything’s on mobile phones, and we need to be a part of everything that’s happening. We have to grow with the changes, with technology.”

At the same time, Globe myBusiness educated the participants about different business solutions that can help them sell online such as Shopify; boost efficiency through the Gsuite online suite of productivity tools that can be used anywhere and on any device; and advertise their business like the Adblast targeted texts to consumers, among others.

“The workshop was very helpful for me. The things discussed were added nutrients for what I need for my business, like customer advocacy, offline tools, online tools … they’re very helpful because I discovered what else I need in order to improve the business,” said Jeyna Azugi of Team Sir George Salon.

Digital technology, however, has to be embraced not only by the decision-makers but the whole team for it to make a bigger impact.

“We learned a lot that could help us with our future plans for the business. We are most interested in the concept of GCash. Our consideration now is how we’ll train our employees, because they’re already doing things a certain way, so it’ll be a [challenge] helping them adapt to technology,” said Flory Jhen and Flory Vhel Alvarez of Shinyou.

However, technology only emphasizes what business owners already know and live by, that it is quality that still gets the customer. Thus, technology has to work side by side with current sales, service and marketing strategies in order for it to work.

CES 2018: LG showcases OLED’s full capabilities

At this year's Consumer Electronics Show (CES), high-tech companies and manufacturers are given the opportunity to showcase their latest upcoming products and concepts, pushing the boundaries of bleeding edge technology. It's only fitting, then, that LG Electronics opted to show off some of the best-ever demonstrations of its flagship OLED technologies.

For CES, LG wowed attendees with its OLED Canyon, a mesmerizing walkway that consists of over 246 LG Open Frame OLED displays. Audiences walked through the Canyon, which was 90 feet in length, flanked on both sides by hundreds of concave and convex displays showing brilliant natural imagery, ranging from waterfalls and caves to glaciers and seascapes.

The rich, vibrant colors of the OLED screens contributed to an unparalleled sense of immersion that had audiences snapping photos at every turn.

Another one of LG’s incredible showcases was a 65-inch rollable OLED display. While it's not the first time LG demonstrated the amazingly flexible properties of OLED panels - in 2016, LG demoed a bendy 18-inch prototype - it's the first time that the technology has been seen scaled up to the size of a typical large TV. When unrolled, the huge 4K display featured all the hallmarks of LG’s best OLED televisions, with incredible contrast and vivid colors, but at the touch of a button, it retracted into its base until it was completely out of sight, rolled up within.

Other options included partly descending into the base, switching from a 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio to a 21:9 ultrawide, allowing you to view movies shot at cinematic aspect ratios without any letterboxing. Another option caused the display to sink almost all the way into the base, revealing only a small strip that displayed updates, controls, and notifications.

While these technologies represent visions of the future that may not be coming to your living room any time soon, LG had more up its sleeve for current customers in the form of the LG Signature OLED W8, its latest flagship TV. The W8 includes further enhancements to the display technology, along with a whole host of new features that highlight it as one of the best TVs you can buy. One feature is the integration of Google Assistant into the webOS Smart TV platform, allowing you to use intuitive voice commands to control the W8, search the Web, control IoT and smart home devices, and more.

Another is the inclusion of a 4.2 Dolby Atmos soundbar that provides incredible sound to match any content that you can throw at it. The soundbar also serves as the input source for the TV, and connects to it via a stunningly thin cable.

As other manufacturers enter the market with their own OLED models, LG’s pioneering efforts and technological leadership in the field are what allow it to stay on top.

These and other demonstrations of LG’s OLED technology truly cement LG’s status as the No. 1 OLED brand.

Globe wins TM Forum Catalyst Award for Innovation, pushes for API standardization

Globe Telecom is taking the lead in setting standards for APIs with Project OAsIS having received the award for Outstanding Catalyst for Innovation in the recently concluded TM Forum Live! Asia 2017 in Singapore.

Project OAsIS Team led by Globe Head of Enterprise Architecture Vincent Seet (5th from left), receives the Outstanding Catalyst for Innovation Award at the recently concluded TM Forum Live!
Short for Open APIs for a vibrant IoT ecosystem, Project OAsIS takes on bridging the fragmented IoT industry. The goal of Project OAsIs is to identify and adopt the best-suited APIs for Telco IoT applications, platforms and connected things to make them interoperable regardless of which protocol or framework they use.

At the TM Forum Live! Asia 2017 event, Globe Telecom demonstrated Project OAsIS through a workflow of working prototypes for a connected home and a connected parking use case. These prototypes included application management systems and mobile apps that were connected to devices including a fan, a lamp, and a motion-sensor for the connected home; and a demonstration parking lot with gantries, proximity sensors, radio-frequency identification (RFID) readers and an LCD screen for the connected parking scenario.

The mobile app for the connected home was also equipped with a security feature. This is an added user experience as the app notifies the user if motion is detected inside the home while the system is in "away" mode. On the other hand, the mobile app for the connected parking makes it easier for the user to search for and reserve parking slots. With the mobile app, it can easily track available parking spaces around the area and do mobile payments when leaving.

“We want to ensure that Globe Telecom can open ways to onboard new connected things and applications with less integration but, with great impact to our users,” Globe Chief Technology and Information Officer Gil Genio said.

The POC project proposed a standardized set of working APIs to interconnect different IoT ecosystems, aiming to bridge gaps in IoT. These OAsIS APIs will facilitate the interconnectivity of IoT applications, platforms and connected things. It will allow customers’ orders to be processed and billed, and devices to be controlled across platforms. “In terms of connected things and IoT applications, Globe through Project OAsIS, could provide more options to our users in making the IoT ecosystem an attractive package to other partners, which in turn could lead to a more comprehensive adoption of the technology,” Genio also said.

He explained that even without the award, the entire OAsIS team, led by the Enterprise Architecture Group, and Emerging Technologies under Solutions Delivery Division, Information Systems Group, is hoping to leverage on TM Forum's reach.  “The award gives more focus on the importance of standardizing APIs as a building block in IoT, and also acknowledges the vision and effort of the OAsIS team. We're hoping that this will further motivate the TM Forum community in the adoption of these IoT APIs,” Genio added.

He further emphasized that device manufacturers, communications service providers (CSPs) and application developers can eventually benefit from the network effect, find ways to expand the IoT as a whole and accelerate the maturity of the market.

The TM Forum Catalyst Award is a rapid-fire innovation project that allows telco operators and solution vendors to participate openly and solve industry challenges. As a digital service provider, Globe Telecom has always aimed for a digital transformation through the power of technology. Earlier this year, Globe Telecom has endorsed TM Forum’s suite of Open APIs. To date, these Open APIs are now being used to enable a range of business scenarios and enable a wide range of revenue growth opportunities for communications service providers (CSPs) and their partners and suppliers.
