Shell's RestART aims to rebuild dreams through art, Shell's long-running student art competition call for entries nationwide

From last year's "Hope in Our Art" creations that depict hope through art, Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation's Shell National Students Art Competition (NSAC) takes on an equally relevant theme this year – restART, which encourages young artists to come up with art works that inspire and contribute to a stronger and better country.

As Pilipinas Shell’s unwavering commitment to Philippine art, we introduce Juan Art Nation, a campaign that aims to broaden programs for our growing community of artists, through the 54th edition of Shell NSAC, one of the most prestigious art competitions in the Philippines for more than five decades. The 54th Shell National Students Art Competition (NSAC) is one of the longest-running student art competitions in the country. It is one of the programs under JUAN ART NATION which enables the youth and art community to convey their imagination into a tangible art form and serve as inspiration for Filipinos.

Recognizing the importance of art as a guide to the future, PSPC President and CEO Cesar Romero, said that “we encourage the youth to actively take part in shaping the future of the Philippines, using art as tool and guide. Shell is committed to help shape the country’s leaders of tomorrow; we therefore ask the youth to continue to bring inspiration through art and use that as a platform to keep the Philippines moving forward.”

Participants need to bring forth their dreams, ideas, unique perspectives, and novel insights and foresights through art.

They get to choose from various art categories, including: Oil/Acrylic, Watercolor, Sculpture, and Digital Fine Arts.

Shell's NSAC, which last year saw the participation of 1,500 art hopefuls, has been an enabler for artists to showcase their talent and vision, producing established artists like abstract National Artist of the Philippines awardee Jose Joya, expressionist painter Ang Kiukok, applied sculpture practitioner Leeroy New, realistic oil painter Ivan Roxas., and National Artist for Visual Arts Benedicto "BenCab" Cabrera.

Winners of the 54th Shell NSAC can win these prizes:

  • FIRST PRIZE: Php60,000 cash, a limited Shell NSAC shirt and jacket, a gold medal, and a plaque
  • SECOND PRIZE: Php40,000 cash, a limited Shell NSAC shirt and jacket, a silver medal, and a plaque
  • THIRD PRIZE: Php30,000 cash, a limited Shell NSAC shirt and jacket, a bronze medal, and a plaque.

The deadline for entries is on October 1, 2021. Winners will be announced through a virtual awarding ceremony via Zoom on November 24, 2021.

ABS-CBN acquires rights to produce local adaptation of South Korea's "Flower of Evil", stars with Piolo Pascual and Lovi Poe

Ultimate heartthrob Piolo Pascual and new Kapamilya star Lovi Poe will play husband and wife in the local adaptation of the hit Korean thriller romance drama series.

ABS-CBN Entertainment will produce the local adaptation of South Korean thriller drama "Flower of Evil” after acquiring the rights from content production companies CJ ENM Co., Ltd. and Studio Dragon Corporation to adapt the hit series for Filipino viewers.

The Philippine version will feature multi-awarded actors Piolo Pascual and Lovi Poe in the lead roles as husband and wife, who were originally played by Lee Joon Gi and Moon Chae Won.

An irresistible mix of drama, romance, thrill, and action, “Flower of Evil” follows a man who changes his identity in order to hide his dark past, successfully maintaining his disguise by building a happy family with his police detective wife. But when she starts investigating an unsolved serial murder case that might be tied to him, she must deal with the reality that her perfect husband might not be who she thinks he is.

“Flower of Evil” enjoyed high ratings in South Korea when it premiered on tvN, CJ ENM's leading total entertainment channel, in 2020. The series continued to gain popularity in other countries for its nail-biting plot twists and remarkable performances after becoming available internationally through various streaming platforms.

The local adaptation of “Flower of Evil” will be Lovi’s first Kapamilya teleserye after signing with ABS-CBN this week, and Piolo’s first after 2018’s “Since I Found You.”

Watch out for Piolo and Lovi in the Philippine adaptation of “Flower of Evil,” which will be produced by Dreamscape Entertainment, soon on ABS-CBN platforms.

WRITE UP ON ART PIECES

Paalam Anak II
Egai Talusan Fernandez, 2020
Soft pastel on paper

Paalam, Anak II
Executed by noted social realist Egay Talusan Fernandez, at the inception of the pandemic in 2020, at a time when mystery surrounded the Corona virus. Many doctors and nurses caught the virus from their patients and surroundings. Many died.

Paalam Anak II depicts a mother, tucking in her daughter in bed, shortly before going off to her nightly hospital duties, not knowing whether this goodbye is for now or for all time.

CELESTE
by Impy Pilapil
1984

Painted during that historical interlude between the assassination of Ninoy Aquino in 1983 and the Edsa Revolution in 1986. The economy was in shambles and people were getting restless. Pilapil's silkscreens on double glass call to mind the confetti floating down in protest from buildings on Ayala Avenue, a prelude to the overthrow of the government.

Per noted art critic Eric Torres:

“Tension occurs between symmetrical static vertical stripes and tiny vertical flakes, fluttering across them…..As one shifts his point of view from one side of the work to the other, he experiences optical illusions of lines blending, expanding and contracting, of linear and spatial transmutations, working on him. All this illusionism is but another aspect of Pilapil’s penchant for beguiling the eye…..”

Exhibit brochure 1986, featuring “Celeste” accompanies the painting

LA JOTA
NA Carlos V. Francisco
1948
Watercolor on paper

National Artist Carlos “Botong” Francisco’s LA JOTA captures the elegance and refinement of this Philippine dance. In this extraordinary work, Francisco portrays not only a dance routine; he also gracefully depicts the characters’ playful spirit.

With a certificate of authenticity signed by Beatriz Ventoza

BEADED HEADDRESS

Hand-beaded headdress from the Kuchi nomads of Afghanistan. There aren't very many of them left practicing their traditional nomadic lifestyle since some have become farmers or settled in towns and cities, and with the present situation, they will probably be dispersed further, making this piece a prized cultural and artisanal relic.
