Escaping the city this Christmas? Five Roadtrip ideas for your Holiday Getaway

Christmas season means a lot of parties and reunions for many. The holiday gatherings may be hectic and the best way to unwind during the busy season is some quality R&R with families and loved ones.

If you’re still looking for ideas, PLDT Home and Caltex got you more reasons to hit the road for your next Christmas celebration.

PLDT Home and Caltex are making your family roadtrips more rewarding with the Fuel your Fiber Promo, where you can get a one-time P150 fuel discount at Caltex and even a chance to win P10,000 worth of fuel vouchers.

If you haven’t got plans to travel this Christmas, here are five easy roadtrip destinations for your friends and family:

1. North: Vigan, Ilocos Sur
Paoay Sand Dunes

The usual mountain options for the cool-weather season are nice, but since everyone wants to enjoy the cold, they’ll also be packed full of tourists. Why not take it all the way up north to Ilocos and bask in the colonial history and heritage of Vigan?

If you’ve never been or haven’t been in a while, it’s a great place to visit. Enjoy the old-school vibe at Calle Crisologo and the city’s old town, see historic destinations like the Baluarte, and even go on an adventure a little farther north at the Paoay Sand Dunes.

2. South: San Pablo, Laguna
Pandin Lake in San Pablo, Laguna

If you’re only willing to travel a couple of hours outside the Metro for your roadtrip, consider heading south into the province of Laguna – specifically, the city of San Pablo, also known as the City of Seven Lakes.

This charming destination offers a tranquil retreat for nature lovers and history enthusiasts alike. Explore the breathtaking namesake seven crater lakes, each with its unique allure, from the serene waters of Lake Sampaloc to the picturesque Lake Pandin. For a taste of history, step into Sulyap Gallery Cafe, housed in a beautifully preserved Spanish-era house that offers a glimpse into the past. The food scene in the city is also vibrant, making it a fun destination to go on a food trip with family and friends.

3. West: The island coves of Zambales

Nagsasa Cove, Zambales

If you’re thinking of the beach, it’s likely that most people will be headed to La Union in the north or Batangas in the south, if they’re not flying to the Visayas. There’s another direction you can take, though: drive west to the Zambales coastline facing the West Philippine Sea, and take a mesmerizing boat ride to any of its popular coves.

There’s the well-known Anawangin and Nagsasa Coves, which take around an hour to get to by motorboat from the shores of San Antonio, Zambales. You can spend a few days camping on its tranquil land while enjoying the pure, untouched wonders of nature.

4. East: The province of Aurora

Ditumabo Falls, Baler, Aurora

From the Northern Luzon Expressway, you can also choose to head east to visit the province of Aurora. While the most well-known spot in the area is the surfing town of Baler, there are also a number of gems waiting to be discovered.

You’ll reach Aurora after driving through the stunning mountain landscape of Nueva Vizcaya, and from there you can choose to visit places like the grand Ditumabo Falls, better known as the Mother Falls, the Millennium Balete tree which stands as an ancient natural wonder, and the Dinalungan River, where you can hike and take in the rare wildlife. And you can also head to and chill at Baler after everything!

5. The Metro: Antipolo

Pinto Art Museum

Fancy a drive but don’t want to pass through an expressway? There’s always nearby Antipolo just east of the main Metro Manila.

Antipolo, as well as the nearby towns and cities in the closer parts of Rizal province, has quite the number of attractions within reach. There’s the popular HinulugangTaktak waterfalls, the MasungiGeoreserve for hiking and adventure enthusiasts, and the Antipolo Cathedral and the Pinto Art Museum for those who want to take in some culture.

No matter where you choose to drive to this Christmas, make sure to enjoy your exclusive rewards from PLDT Home and Caltex. PLDT Home subscribers can get a one-time P150 fuel discount at Caltex. Chevron sponsors AmCham Foundation ScholaRun to help send youths to school

To help send disadvantaged youths to school, Chevron Philippines Inc. (CPI), marketer of the Caltex brand of fuels and lubricants, together with its shared services center, Chevron Holdings Inc., sponsored the recent 9th AmCham Eat and Run ScholaRUN at the Liwasang Ulalim, CCP Complex, Pasay City.

The run-for-a-cause is an annual event by the American Chamber Foundation Philippines, Inc. (ACFPI) to help raise funds for its scholarship program. ACFPI supports underprivileged youth through various development and education initiatives.

The scholarship enables students in high school, college, and vocational courses to fund their tuition fees and school supplies and provides allowance and guidance all to way to their on-the-job training. At least 2,000 former AmCham scholars were able to finish their studies since the program started which Chevron has always supported.

About 175 employees from CHI and CPI joined the run in support of the AmCham Foundation's cause. The event registered over 3,000 runners.

“We have been a long-time partner of AmCham and its initiatives and programs. Through this activity, we were able to further strengthen our relationship and commitment to the foundation as well as our support to their scholars. We trust that through our collective efforts, students get a chance to have a better life and more opportunities to succeed,” shared Chevron Human Resources Regional Manager Mark Quebral.

“It’s a great feeling knowing that your mere presence and participation is already helping underprivileged students in their studies. As added bonus, you also get to do something good for yourself through exercising and staying active. Chevron believes in AmCham’s cause of contributing to the community and helping people in need, and we look forward to continuing our partnership with them and supporting their other events and activities,” CHI General Manager Ethan Flowers shared.

At the awards ceremony after the run, CHI Corporate Affairs Manager Arlita Narag accepted a plaque of appreciation as AmCham’s co-presenter of the 9th ScholaRUN. Hammering on its unique eat-and-run concept, participants got to taste American favorites such as pizza, burgers and donuts upon reaching the pit stop. The 9th Eat and Run ScholaRUN featured categories in 200M, 3K, 5K, 10K and 21K.

“We are very happy with the turnout and the general mood of the run. We are, after all, doing this for students and youth in need, so we are beyond grateful to all who participated. Currently, we have 50 scholars studying vocational technology at Don Bosco Makati. All the proceeds from our fundraising events, including the ScholaRUN - Eat & Run, go to our scholarship programs. So as always, we appreciate our sponsors, partners and participants who made this event possible,” said Edwin Feist, President of ACFPI.

At least 3,000 highest need PHS students in MM receive STEM equipment, materials from Caltex Fuel Your School

Manila, Philippines – About 3,000 students from the highest-need, senior-ready public high schools in Metro Manila are now learning science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) with the help of brand new equipment received recently from the Caltex Fuel Your School (FYS) program of Chevron Philippines Inc. (CPI), marketer of high-quality brand of Caltex fuels and lubricants.

A global Chevron social investment program that was first introduced in the country this year, Caltex FYS involved motorists and the public who supported the said campaign during the donation period wherein every 4-liter fuel purchase in any of the 153 Caltex stations in Metro Manila, Rizal, and Cavite generated one peso donation to fund the projects.

Chevron aims to reach a P5M donation fund or at least P150,000 per target beneficiary school. This amount was met during the fuel-up drive and social media campaign from June 15 to July 15, 2015. This funded the 28 STEM classroom proposals that were shortlisted by program partner American Chamber Foundation as submitted by 27 of the 33 schools pre-selected by DepEd as schools most in need of support in Metro Manila.

The delivery of the STEM teaching tools such as laboratory equipment, engineering kits, scientific calculators, laptops, tablets and multi-media projectors to the schools were received with both delight and tears by the teacher-proponents, most of whom were still having a hard time believing their wishes had come true.

Kalayaan High School in Pasay City, teacher/project proponent Reynaldo Cordova said that “[These] brand new electronics and technical apparatus will help realize the dreams of the poorest of the poor students [of Kalayaan High School] of becoming free from poverty”. In Pasay City South High School, on the other hand, teacher/project proponent Jonalyn Suzara requested 303 units of brand new scientific calculators. “I can vividly remember how my students use palengke-style calculators in computing. They were complaining, ‘Ma’am, we cannot make logarithmic computations here.’ That will not be a problem anymore with these scientific calculators,” added Suzara.

Some of the teachers got emotional upon receiving their requested STEM equipment and materials. In Carlos L. Albert High School in Quezon City where most students have limited or no access to the Internet, teachers vouched that the state-of-the-art multimedia materials from Caltex FYS will help students learn faster through interactive participation. Said a teary-eyed Cecilia Biapo, the school’s science department head, “In the past, storms and typhoons forms were discussed through ‘MP3’ or ‘Manila Paper 1, 2, 3’. Now, we have 48-inch flat screen TV! Who wouldn’t want to see animations of cyclogenesis with that?” she relayed.

Other schools took a step closer to their specific academic visions after receiving the STEM equipment. Imelda Quiban, the STEM department head of Pitogo High School in Makati City, shared, “To craft the finest biochemistry research, our student-researchers used to rent an autoclave – or sterilizer machine in a university in Laguna for PhP5,000. But now, we have our own! Whereas we were forced to use ‘vintage’ equipment, now our autoclave is shiny and brand new. Thanks to Caltex, our school will soon be the ‘center of science research’ in Makati.”

To help spread awareness and thus enable more people to donate and like the projects posted in the FYS website, the Caltex campaign also ran a Facebook component, prompting several of the schools to devise gimmicks and strategies to rack up votes. Caloocan National Science and Technology High School, the smallest school among the shortlisted schools in terms of student population, emerged as the victor after getting the most number of votes. Teacher/project proponent Fel Rose Ignacio despite their relatively small school population campaigned to the students through a daily “Facebook voting hour” and had the students view the instructional video she and her co-teachers created exclusively for Caltex FYS. She recalled, “We uploaded this video and shared the link to the dedicated Facebook page in which all of our students were members, then they utilized the ‘web-of-mouth’ strategy and shared with their network.”

Also in the top three based on the Facebook voting rank are Culiat High School in Quezon City and Pasay City East High School. All three schools received a new laptop each as a bonus prize in addition to the STEM materials they asked for, for the untiring but fruitful campaigning both in social media and fuel-up drive.

Motorists and the social media community played a significant role in the Caltex FYS program. Entrepreneur Mich Mori said, “I supported the campaign because I wanted to do my part in helping these kids have a bright future. Who would’ve thought that a portion of my weekly gas expense can turn into something beneficial?” Blogger Andy Nieva meanwhile relayed, “When you see, read, and like the [Caltex FYS] projects on Facebook, you somehow turn a leisure [activity] into valuable support for the beneficiary children. In this little way, I fueled up the dreams of these students to become a reality.”

According to Olivia Dagdag, the principal of Camp Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo High School in Quezon City, “I set the direction of our school and that is to achieve our Caltex FYS project. Unity is the key to success. That is why I believe the Caltex FYS program became successful not only because of our school initiative, but also with the collaboration of the motorists, the community, and the private sector.”

Raissa Bautista, manager for CPI’s Policy, Government, and Public Affairs, explained that the company believes that “Education is the greatest equalizer. The combination of quality school equipment provided by Caltex FYS, passionate teachers, and motivated students will make education a very powerful tool for economic growth and sustainability.”

Caltex Fuel Your School is part of CPI’s Energy for Learning Initiative which supports educational programs that create opportunities for individuals to acquire new knowledge, gain new skills, and be exposed to different ways of thinking. Chevron celebrates going 80 years and further with Delo

Chevron Lubricants, maker of the Delo brand of technologically advanced engine oils, lubricants and coolants, celebrated its 80th year of Delo brand.

Delo (Diesel Engine Lubricating Oil) has been established since 1935. In the 1950s, the Delo brand pioneered the first successful multi-grade engine oil and delivered one of the first two oils approved for Caterpillar Series 3 – RPM Delo Supercharged-3 Oil.

In 1971, Chevron Delo 400 was introduced and became the first product in the industry to meet the diesel and gasoline service applications. In 1984, Chevron introduced the first all-hydro processed base oils, which set the standard for performance in the base oil industry. Later in the decade, Chevron was the first to extend a big diesel engine (CAT 3406B) life to 1.6 million kilometers without overhaul.

Chevron introduced Delo with ISOSYNTM Technology based on our ISODEWAXING process, resulting in mineral base oils with synthetic-like capabilities in 1993. In 1996, Delo became the first brand to demonstrate 1.6 million kilometers to overhaul in Detroit Diesel Series 60, Cummins NTC400/N-14 and Caterpillar 3406B engines and the first to meet the oil performance requirements of PC-7 (which later became API CH-4) without having to reformulate. Delo 400 Multigrade SAE 15W-40 became the first heavy duty diesel engine oil to meet the API CH-4, Cummins CES 20076 and Mack EO-M Plus extended drain specifications in 1998.

Today, Chevron’s Delo product family includes lubricants, coolants and greases. Delo products are found in all major industries including commercial transportation, construction, mining, agriculture and power generation. These performance benefits can be seen through the experiences of our customers in a variety of markets.

“We are truly proud of Delo for successfully and continuously providing supreme protection to diesel engines for 80 years now. Like what we always say, we want smooth and worry-free drive and operation for our clients that’s why we constantly find ways to improve our products in order to deliver that promise,” shared Michelle Sayat, Chevron Philippines Marketing Manager for Lubricants. “We’ve done it for the last eight decades, and we will go further than that. We’re looking forward to servicing the Philippines for the next 80 years and more.”

Delo is a global brand, distributed by Chevron under Caltex master brand in Asia Pacific. More information on Delo products can be found at: www.DeloPerformance.com

Chevron stresses maintenance of Metro Weather Project automated weather stations during rainy season

The near-real time weather information transmittal for the Metro Weather Project with the sustained maintenance of the Automated Weather Systems unit strategically areas including 18 Caltex Stations, is important for the public most especially during the rainy season.

This project is aimed at providing the public with weather information that may aid them with necessary preparation.

Chevron Philippines Inc. (CPI), marketer of the high quality Caltex brand of fuels, including Havoline and Delo lubricants, assured that the 18 Metro Weather Project automated weather systems (AWS) under its supervision are properly functioning after the continuous and intensive maintenance procedures the company conducts to ensure the units are up to the task as the rainy season starts.

The Metro Weather project, implemented in 2013, is created from a successful collaboration between Chevron companies in the Philippines as an enterprise effort, the Manila Observatory (MO), and other organizations such as Globe Telecom, and MMDA.

The project provides near-real time weather information that is integrated to the MMDA Traffic mobile app and can also be accessed online through http://www.panahon.observatory.ph.

The data comes from the project’s 30 AWS units which collect and store weather data that show, among others, the rainfall intensity which can indicate flooding. These AWS units, placed in strategic areas including in 18 Caltex stations within Metro Manila, covers up to 12 million people.

“The public always needs to be informed about the weather especially during the rainy season, so that they can do the necessary preparations. So we are always making sure that the 18 Caltex-hosted AWS units are regularly calibrated, checked, and cleaned up so that weather data is correctly gathered and transmitted to the MO for analysis and interpretation,” said Raissa Bautista, manager of Policy, Government, and Public Affairs, CPI.

The Metro Weather project is very effective in creating environmental consciousness to the public. According to Antonia Loyzaga, MO executive director, “The data collected by the AWS assists in refining the identified flooding thresholds that the Metro Manila LGUs, MMDA, and DENR-Mines and Geosciences Bureau are monitoring. The data and analysis can be used as part of the evidence-based decision support system for evacuation planning, class cancellations, preparedness planning and zoning, and land-use planning.” Several caveats from project, with data coming from all 18 Caltex-hosted units, are recognized especially during the southwest monsoon months. In 2013, the project identified more than 50 flooded areas in Metro Manila due to monsoon rains intensified by Tropical Storm “Maring”. While in the wake of Tropical Storm “Mario” in September 2014, AWS satellite images indicated strong rainfall activity that caused flooding.

The Metro Weather project has recently been expanded outside Metro Manila. “Similar projects are being deployed in areas including Iloilo City and Iloilo province, Davao City and Davao Oriental and Cagayan de Oro City,” said Loyzaga.
Bautista added, “Chevron Philippines remains supportive and highly interested in this collaboration. Our continued commitment to public safety and environmental awareness keeps us motivated to support initiatives that address issues and educate the general public on the impact of severe weather changes.”

Engineers calibrate one of the 18 AWS units that Caltex stations host in various points across Metro Manila.  The near-real time weather information details may be accessed through the MMDA Traffic mobile app and http://www.panahon.observatory.ph.
