“2017 is truly vital for the company as we continue to focus on making lives simpler and tasks easier with our innovations. These are what make Epson a trusted brand in many parts of the world”, concludes Mr. Toshimitsu Tanaka.

The annual Epson Media thanksgiving event dubbed as Fusion 8 was held in Apulit Island, El Nido Resorts in Palawan with members of the press and tech and lifestyle bloggers, Epson shared an overview of what is next for the leading digital imaging pioneer.

In a series of presentations, Epson imparted how it has been using its core technologies to boost innovations on its varied product categories, including inkjet printers, projectors, point-of-sale printers, signage printers and digital textile printers to support Epson’s vision for the next succeeding years.

“Epson 2025”

With the company’s Vision Statement, “Epson 2025” first unveiled last 2016, the company has since strengthened its focus on its four key areas of innovation, Inkjet innovation, Visual innovation, Wearables innovation and Robotics innovation.

During the Fusion 8, the most innovative gadget presented was Epson’s BT-300 Moverio smart glasses. The wearable is setting the standard in Augmented Reality (AR) with the smallest, most comfortable smart eyewear on the market. Combined with a growing ecosystem of partners and hardware, the company recently inked a deal with drone maker DJI to equip specific models of drones with the Moverio as standard equipment. The Moverio will cost upwards of P43,000 at select Epson stores in the Philippines.

The Epson Vision Statement 2025 is the next phase of development for the company worldwide, with Epson companies all over the world working to expand the scope of its efficient, compact and precision technologies to help free people from repetitive manual work and from unnecessary waste of time and effort.

Epson’s continuous success in its varying product categories is supported by its leading figures in the market.

  • For Inkjet innovations, Epson gained a 51% market share, which made 1 out of 2 printers sold last year an Epson printer.
  • The Professional Printers category continues to dominate and reported a 41% market share.
  • Epson has also been the No. 1 POS Receipt Printer for 7 years running.
  • For Visual Innovations, with education becoming more and more advanced and interactive, Epson shared that it has gained a 67% market share.
Mr. Ed Bonoan, Senior General Manager and Marketing Head, Epson Philippines.

“Simply put, Epson’s goal is to heighten people’s creativity, and to create a sustainable society in which people enjoy safe and healthy lifestyles. The long-term successes in Epson inkjet printer, projector and point-of-sale printer categories have paved the way towards this direction, as much as the recent successes of Epson products in Commercial & Industrial Printing and Wearable Technology” says Mr. Ed Bonoan, Senior General Manager and Marketing Head, Epson Philippines.
The Seiko Epson Corporation, with a long legacy of innovations in its 75 years of existence, has continued to expand on its long-established strengths as a manufacturing company. Refining the company's super-microprocessing and precision processing technologies in the development of its watches, and then expanding those technologies into other fields, is what led to its rapid progress. With an ever-increasing portfolio of innovative products, the digital imaging pioneer vows to make the next decades even better.

The Epson Story on Innovation Continues

Epson is a global technology leader dedicated to connecting people, things and information with its original efficient, compact and precision technologies. With a lineup that ranges from inkjet printers and digital printing systems to 3LCD projectors, smart glasses, sensing systems and industrial robots, the company is focused on driving innovations and exceeding customer expectations in inkjet, visual communications, wearables and robotics.

PRINTING INNOVATIONS

Business Inkjet Printers:

Epson has transformed the way people look at printers when the company pioneered the World’s first genuine Ink Tank System printers - an innovation that stemmed from the customers’ drive for high volume printing and affordable supplies cost without sacrificing quality and reliability. Combining the best of both worlds - an inkjet printer that significantly lowered total ownership costs while producing Epson-quality prints—the Epson L-Series was born, revolutionizing the landscape of printing.

Epson Philippines’ continuous success in the Business Inkjet Printers segment was proven as the company’s market share grew through the years and quickly gained market leadership.

“Epson has changed the market with the introduction of the Genuine Ink Tank and we have become the brand of choice here in the country and the whole of Southeast Asia as well. Since the launch of the first Epson L-Series printers, we have sold over 15 million units, and we are glad to say that 1 out of 2 printers sold last year was an Epson inkjet printer”, says Russer Cabrera, Product Manager for Business Inkjet Printers, Epson Philippines.

From 2017 onwards, Epson Philippines will continue to expand its line-up of its business segment with more features to address the printing needs of corporations and big enterprises. With Epson’s PrecisionCore technology, the new business printers can offer more options on duplex printing, A3 printing and monochrome printing, as well as high-speed Inkjet Multi-Function Printers in the A3, 45ppm & above domain, where laser copiers predominated.

The newest Epson technology also addresses its environmental objectives by lowering power consumption, with fewer parts for maintenance and enhanced document security.

Professional Printers:

Epson also achieved the No.1 Position for 7 consecutive years in POS (Point-of-Sale) printers, not a small feat for the small printer category. The intelligent range of Epson POS printers connect seamlessly with tablet POS solutions, operating connectivity via Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Ethernet—which creates new opportunities of growth and mobility for retail businesses.

“Epson delivers unmatched ease-of-use, exceptional connectivity and legendary quality for customers, with all the technical resources they need,” says Thea Austria, Product Manager for Professional Printers Group, Epson Philippines.

Epson’s small printer category also includes label printers, which have been developed for industrial and commercial use, addressing the new wave of printing on-demand in color.

Commercial & Industrial Printers:

From the smallest counter top POS printer to a 64-inch commercial printer, Epson has a wide range of products that are built for the changing needs of the customer.

The large-format printers under the Commercial & Industrial Printers category have created significant changes in work processes in various industries, such as shortening production processes, improving workflow, and tasks more economical all while being environmentally-sound. Moreover, signage printing has transformed applications that include car wraps, tarpaulin banners, wallpapers, standees and backlit posters.

Another Epson professional printing product, the breakthrough digital textile printer, also helped put the country on the map once again, when Filipino avant-garde designer John Herrera won “Britain’s Top Designer Competition” for a collection digitally printed by the Epson dye sublimation printer.

“Digital textile printing offers unrivaled creative freedom, reduces time to create new designs that are more sustainable and environmentally-friendly,” adds Ms. Chu Bacsal-Pajarito, Product Manager for Commercial & Industrial Printers, Epson Philippines.

VISUAL IMAGING INNOVATIONS

Epson has achieved what no other projector brand has done --- be on top as World’s No. 1 for 16 consecutive years.

In Southeast Asia, Epson projectors also claim top spots in most countries, including in the Philippines. With a 55% market share, it surpasses all other projector brands combined.

In 2017, Epson aims even higher, with new models addressing new applications like interactive learning for the education sector, high-brightness requirements for large venues, rental and staging, and the increased demand for offices and the corporate sector. The past years have seen Epson Philippines launch projectors catering to business usage, as well as the World’s 1st 25,000 lumens laser projector. The interactive features of Epson projectors have also been highly commended for enhancing Video Conference Systems, an ideal solution for concept-sharing and corporate trainings for participants are situated in different locations.

In past years, entry-level models continue to dominate the projector market in the Philippines, but recently, there is an increasing adoption of high brightness projectors in event usage, as well as laser-based projectors. Home projectors are also in-demand as a niche market rises to cater to hobbyists who require large-screen images.

“The future of Epson projectors remains bright as we continue to refine original microdisplay and projection technologies, and create outstanding visual experiences and a natural visual communications environment for every aspect of business and lifestyles,” explains Ms. Lyn Lizarondo, Product Manager for Visual Imaging Systems, Epson Philippines.

WEARABLES INNOVATION

The champion product in Epson’s range of wearable technology is the Epson Moverio. As early as 2011, Epson introduced the first Moverio, the BT-100. The technology behind Moverio is rooted in the same world-leading 3LCD technology used in Epson projectors for projecting the images on the lenses of the smart glass.

Just last 2016, Epson announced the launch of the latest addition to its Moverio line, the Moverio BT-300. The Moverio BT-300 features Epson’s own cutting edge silicon-based OLED (organic light emitting diode) digital display technology, enabling the device to be the lightest see-through binocular smart glasses on the market, thus setting the new standard for augmented reality smart eyewear.

The Epson Moverio is about Augmented Reality or seeing the actual world, with computer generated graphics augmented on it, much like what the Pokémon Go craze was all about.

But the development of the Epson Moverio is not just for games. Leveraging Epson’s precision engineering capabilities, Epson specifically designed the Moverio to work well in enterprise and industrial environments.

“The Moverio BT-300 continues Epson’s commitment to binocular smart eyewear and real optical see-through overlay. Moreover, the Moverio BT-300 adds a new dimension to professionals for improving their efficiency and accuracy at work, enabling workers to share their experience virtually or provide hands-free movement for hands-on work,” elaborates Mr. Jester Cruz, Department Head for Product Management Division and Product Manager for Moverio, Epson Philippines.

ROBOTICS INNOVATION

At Epson, robots are no longer a future dream. Robotics is already part and parcel of how Epson operates and manufactures. With Epson being named SCARA robot market share leader for 6 successive years, Epson goes forward by expanding applications which robots support people in a wide variety of situations through efficient, compact, precision technologies refined over the years.

“Epson intends to lower the barriers to automation, expand the market and build a competitive advantage. Globally, Epson has already started by advancing the company’s robotic vision, force sensor, and accelerometer technologies. The long-term goal is to sell robots packaged with software that control robot motion and operations. Such packages will dramatically reduce the amount of time it takes users to install robots,” explains Mr. Ng Ngee Khiang, Regional General Manager (SE Asia), Robotics Division, Epson Singapore.

Epson Philippines provided technical training to the Family Life Missions and the Lantern Vision Learning Center to help the custodians utilize the Epson products donated under the Epson Gift of Brightness (GoB) program.

These training sessions were put into place to enable the school faculty and students to be equipped in using the Technology Package. Through the GoB program, Epson Philippines aspires to help enrich the learning experience for students of select public elementary and high schools.

Each beneficiary school had earlier received an Epson Technology package that includes the L220 Multifunction Color Printers and L Series Inks; M100 Single Function Monochrome Printers and Inks; an LQ310 Dot Matrix Printer and SIDM Ribbons, LW400 Label Printers and LW Ribbons, Epson projectors and a document camera.

  • “These technical training sessions for all schools that received the Epson GoB Technology Package ensure that we also provide relevant assistance to the custodians and students on the proper usage and maintenance, so that they can have confidence in deploying the use of these products for teaching and learning,” shared Mr. Ed Bonoan, Senior General Manager and Head of Marketing, Epson Philippines.
Since the launch of the Epson Gift of Brightness, Epson has partnered with key media and government institutions to select the most-deserving and in-need schools that can benefit from the technologically advanced equipment including high-volume printers, high brightness projectors and user-friendly scanners.

“Thanks to Epson Gift of Brightness program, the students of Lantern Vision Learning Center under Family Life Missions will be provided with free printed school materials and a very nice projector for the lessons. This donation will be a big help to us and our young pupils,” said Carlos Terry, the principal missionary who leads Family Life Missions.
Family Life Missions is a non-profit organization that helps poor communities in the Las Pinas area through providing free pre-school education through its Lantern Vision Learning Center. The center also provides free meals to its young students, as well as free school supplies. Most of the materials come from various donations to the NGO.

The Gift of Brightness advocacy of Epson Philippines was launched in December 2013, and has to date, benefited a total of 30 schools nationwide. Epson Philippines is currently selecting another batch of beneficiary schools with the help of DepEd and other partners.

“The Epson Gift of Brightness program is our advocacy for education and the Filipino youth. After our first partnership with the Department of Education last year, we are now embarking on another batch of beneficiaries of the Epson-DepEd Gift of Brightness, and some other schools that have directly asked Epson for help. Epson Wins Prestigious Red Dot Award for Moverio BT-300 Smart Glasses

MoverioBT-300smart glasses

Seiko Epson Corporation has won the Red Dot Award in the Product Design category (Red Dot Award: Product Design 2017)* for its Moverio BT-300 smart glasses with silicon organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays.

Created in 1955 in Germany, the Red Dot Design Award is recognized around the world as one of the most prestigious awards in the design field. A jury of experts evaluates products announced during the past two years and selects the best designs based on nine criteria, including degree of innovation, functionality, ergonomics, ecological compatibility, and durability.

The Moverio BT-300 features Epson’s own silicon OLED displays. It is compact and lightweight yet delivers amazing brightness, contrast, resolution, and image quality. Images are rendered in realistic color and without a distracting frame around the edges of the display. These features mean that Moverio images and information are displayed seamlessly in the user’s field of view for a realistic augmented reality (AR) experience.

“We always want our product designs to exceed customer expectations, but the Moverio BT-300 is more streamlined than our previous model. I think the judges recognized that the design achieves comfort and looks natural. We want to continue to make strides toward even better designs in the future,” says Hiroaki Sakai, general manager of the design department in Epson’s Visual Products Operations Division.

An awards ceremony was held in Essen, Germany on April 3.

John Herrera and Epson team up for Eagle-inspired haute couture collection at London Fashion Week

John Herrera, winner of Britain’s Top Designer 2017,
uses Epson digital printing technology to open up new creative possibilities

At the John Herrera x Epson Preview Showcase in Manila

Fashion designer John Herrera (www.johnherreracouture.com) has partnered with Epson to produce a 30-piece collection digitally printed with Epson’s digital textile dye-sublimation printers. The collection for men and women is inspired by the Aguila, the protected Great Philippine Eagle, and was showcased at the recent London Fashion Week 2017.

The collection won John the position of Britain’s Top Designer 2017, a competition organised by Fashion’s Finest and held during London Fashion Week. John, based in Manila, Philippines, was also previously a winner at the London Emerging Designers (LED) Awards in 2015.

John works closely with Epson in the Philippines and is at the forefront of taking fashion to the next level through digital textile printing using Epson’s SureColor F-series dye-sublimation digital textile printers.
“This partnership with Epson is very exciting. There are so many things you can do with printing compared to just buying fabric. Before, all collections by designers were created painstakingly by hand. Many of the outfits, such as 3D items that are worn by the models can only be attached by hand, so what was presented on the runway cannot be worn again and again. With digital printing, the clothes in the collection can be worn in real life,” said John Herrera. “The collection I will be presenting will be impossible to create without the Epson digital textile printer. Without them I would have had to paint the designs myself and, with only a month to prepare, it could not have been done,” he added.

On his win at Britain’s Top Designer 2017 competition, he said, “The feedback from the judges was fantastic – particularly about the incredible quality of the fabric. One said that the eagle designs that I had drawn and printed were so clear and crisp they appeared almost 3D. Digital printing with Epson technology has enabled me to experiment with fabrics and choose the very best for my designs. It’s been a dream of mine – and most designers in fact - to be in control of the whole design process: from producing the fabric design, to choosing the fabric and printing it and creating the finished outfit. Epson has enabled me to realize this dream and I’m not going back now.”

John adopts a “no-waste, no plastic” approach and puts a lot of importance on reducing waste in his work. “With digital textile printing, we only use the exact volume of fabric. Instead of wasting five yards of fabric to do a lay out for a dress, we use only one and a half yards of digitally printed fabric. Digital textile printing significantly cuts fabric wastage. Faster, more intelligent, almost zero wastage - that’s what Epson brings to the table,” he said.

Epson’s digital textile printing technology is driven by the company’s Precision Core printhead technology, one of the fastest inkjet delivery technologies in the world. Its print nozzles deliver ultra-precise control of ink droplets for superior image sharpness across a wide range of ink and media producing outstandingly vivid and unique prints.

Digital printing shortens turnaround time and enables printing in small volumes for customized prints, compared to traditional printing techniques, which require high volumes and long lead times. As a result, digital printing helps designers such as John Herrera to achieve their artistic vision by translating their ideas to a range of fabrics quickly, easily and in the highest quality.

“Epson digital textile printing is inspiring more and more fashion designers to explore the creative and production potential that this technology enables. There is much potential in the region for digital textile technology to revolutionize the way designers work and create. With this, the designers are only limited by their imagination,” said Shuji Hamaguchi, Regional General Manager (SE Asia), Professional Printing Division, Epson Singapore.

“We would also like to congratulate John on his recent at Britain’s Top Designer competition. We are delighted to have the opportunity to support his achievement, and we hope that this inspires more fashion designers to make their vision into a reality,” he added.

Epson has been selected for the list largely in recognition of its success rate, a metric that indicates the ratio of patents granted to the number of applications filed.

Intellectual property at Epson
Epson files about 4,000 patent applications a year. It holds and maintains about 50,000 patents globally and is working with patent agencies in 20 countries or more at any given time. In the patent rankings for the 2015 fiscal year, Epson ranked 7th in Japan for the number of patents awarded, 16th in the United States, and 15th in China (among foreign companies). Epson possesses world-class IP capabilities and is an industry leader in patent quantity and quality in product categories such as inkjet printers and projectors.

Comments from Toshiya Takahata, executive officer and general administrative manager of Epson’s Intellectual Property Division

“I am extremely pleased and proud that Epson has once again been honored with inclusion on the Top 100 Global Innovators list. Epson’s business strategies and intellectual property strategies are closely linked under the Epson 25 Corporate Vision. The acquisition of high-quality patents that contribute to our business is a high priority for us. I think Clarivate Analytics was able to see and appreciate what we have been doing, and that’s why we again made the Top 100 Global Innovators list. Intellectual property expands the potential of Epson’s current businesses as well as our future businesses. The Intellectual Property Division will continue to work closely with research and development departments to achieve Epson’s aim of becoming a truly indispensable company by creating products and services that help to make the world a better place.”

John Herrera wins Britain’s Top Designer Competition for a collection digitally-printed by Epson

Epson congratulates fashion visionary and designer John Herrera for his win at Britain’s Top Designer 2017 at London Fashion Week.

We would like to congratulate John on his recent win at Britain’s Top Designer competition. Epson is truly happy to have supported this achievement through digital textile printing. We hope that this inspires more fashion designers to make their vision into a reality,” shared Ed Bonoan, Senior General Manager and Marketing Head, Epson Philippines.

The winning collection, a result of the collaboration between John and Epson, is inspired by the Aguila, the protected Great Philippine Eagle.

Fashion Visionary and Designer John Herrera
“The feedback from the judges was fantastic – particularly about the incredible quality of the fabric. Epson has enabled me to realize this dream and I’m not going back now,” said John Herrera.

John’s runway collection was first unveiled in the Philippines last 1 February 2017 for an exclusive show for local journalists, Epson executives, partners, celebrities and several representatives from the fashion industry.
