Shopee seller couple proves how love, teamwork, and trust fuel their successful business and strengthen their relationship

Having your life partner by your side through the good times and the bad is one of life’s greatest delights. While many believe that it’s not a good idea to start a business with your partner, the young couple behind the Shopee store BuyMore_Ph proves it can work. Rommel and Ajima’s inspirational love story and Shopee journey are testaments to how teamwork, trust, and communication can lead to success in their personal and professional lives.

Rommel and Ajima’s goal of funding their dream wedding and honeymoon turned out to be the start of a full-scale business that transformed their lives

Blossoming of the relationship and the beginning of their Shopee journey

Rommel and Ajima started selling on Shopee in 2017 as a newly-engaged couple looking for a side hustle to fund their wedding and honeymoon. In their early days on Shopee, they would sell trendy items such as lip tints and ready-to-wear clothes for men and women.

They admit that it was not easy at first but what helped their business succeed was to tap into the current trends. The couple explained, “sumasabay kami sa uso para maka-attract ng customers at nagiging open kami to more variety sa shop namin para mas marami talaga bumili.” [“We had to ride on the trends during that time to offer customers with a wide variety of items that they would be interested in.”]

The turning point of their business happened in 2018 as their shop continued to perform well and more Filipinos began to embrace e-commerce. Rommel, then an IT specialist, and Ajima, a licensed tax consultant, made the crucial decision to quit their jobs and become full-time Shopee sellers. It was daunting, but the couple remained optimistic. After all, now they have more time together as they run their business. “Parang cheesy siya pero sa totoo lang mas masarap talaga mag work kung may goals kayo hanggang pagtanda,” shared Ajima. [“It’s quite cheesy but honestly it really feels so good to work with your partner when you have shared goals until you grow old together.”]

Growing together as husband and wife and business partners in life

When asked what their secret was, the couple says it’s learning how to manage their emotions, in and out of work. Rommel shares “Natutunan namin ihiwalay ang emotions sa trabaho as much as possible [“we learned to compartmentalize our emotions when it comes to the business], and we’re still learning everyday how to improve that. Hindi namin hinahayaan na mangibabaw ang emotions” [“we don’t let emotions get the best of us”], to which Ajima agreed and said, “More than husband and wife, we’re partners in everything”

Their relationship wasn’t the only thing that grew due to their business. They also grew as individuals, becoming more empathetic and decisive in handling their employees was something new to the both of them. With their success, BuyMore_Ph has been able to grant invaluable opportunities to working students and individuals who lost their jobs due to the pandemic, and even some who were unable to finish their studies, especially during these more challenging times.

Rommel, who is more soft-spoken one among the couple, learned to go out of his comfort zone and lead his employees. “Hindi talaga ako masyado makausap sa tao, pero kailangan kong kausapin sila isa-isa para alamin kung ano ang problema.” [I’m not a very talkative and outspoken person but I had to learn how to talk to different kinds of people to resolve issues.]

The couple recognizes the huge role their employees have in the success they’ve achieved. “Super thankful din kami sa kanila kasi nakahanap kami ng tao na may concern din sa kung paano namin pinahalagahan yung business namin,” [“we’re very grateful to have found people who value our business the way we do”] Rommel said.

Inspiring other couples to be persevering and entrepreneurial

The seller couple advises other Shopee sellers to not give up and to trust the process. There may be times when certain strategies don’t always work, but Rommel and Ajima believe that sticking together and enjoying the journey will ultimately reap rewards. Ajima reminds couples who also dream of becoming entrepreneurs to play to each other’s strengths and complement each other’s weaknesses,“kung ano kulang ng isa, napupunan ng isa.” [“whatever one lacks, the other will make up for”]

Rommel and Ajima never expected their once small goal of earning extra income to become a life-changing opportunity for them, their family, and their employees. BuyMore_Ph is now one of the top-selling stores on Shopee with over 1.9M followers. In a few months, Rommel, Ajima, and their almost one-year-old baby (who was born during the 5.5 rush of 2021, no less) will move into their dream house. They continue to oversee more than 40 employees and the operations of their warehouse, as they venture into more ways to expand their business this 2022.

Moms overcome "nutri-problems" for their kids by giving them “Lakas at Talas”

Nutrition has always been a pressing issue, especially now when families are becoming more vulnerable to health and economic problems. During these trying times, the resiliency shown by moms has inspired Alaska Fortified Powdered Milk Drink team in conducting a survey to better understand their nutrition needs and issues encountered by their families during the pandemic.

The survey was conducted among members of the MOMs of Alaska (MOMAs) Facebook community, a group for moms who are dedicated in providing their children proper nutrition. And while providing nutrition remains one of their priorities, the survey has found that it has taken a back seat to more urgent concerns like supporting the family’s finances, budgeting limited earnings for food, health and safety necessities, juggling family responsibilities, and the like.

The survey received responses from nearly 300 moms from different walks of life such as housewives, call center agents, online sellers, teachers, vendors and many more. Majority of the respondents shared that budgeting concerns regarding groceries, health essentials and bills have made it harder to provide nutrition for their families. Half of the respondents have struggled with losing their jobs and a fifth of them struggle with balancing their family responsibilities.

In these trying times, Jenevev, a street food vendor and mother of two described her priorities. “Kahit na sa panahon ng pandemya, dapat hindi kaligtaan ang kalusugan ng pamilya. Kaya sinisigurado ko po na palaging wasto ang sustansyang nakukuha ng mga anak ko” (“Even during the pandemic, we shouldn’t neglect our family’s health. That’s why I make sure that my children receive the nutrition they need”), Jenevev shared.

She isn't the only one from the MOMAs community that feels this way. In these exceptional circumstances, Jonalene, a housewife and mother of two struggles to provide sufficient nutrition for her children due to lack of financial capability.

“Kahit mahirap i-budget ang PHP 100 a day, sinusubukan ko pa din bigyan ang mga anak ko ng masusustansyang pagkain tulad ng gulay. Simpleng ginisang gulay ay ayos na” (“Even though it’s difficult to budget PHP 100 a day, I still try to find ways to give my children healthy food like vegetables. A simple stir-fried vegetable dish is enough”), says Jonalene.

Most of the respondents agree with this sentiment. Out of the 94% of respondents who consider providing proper nutrition for their families a top priority, 66.3% don’t have the means to afford the nutritional meals they aspire for. On top of these problems, the pandemic continues to change the lifestyles and consumer habits of families everywhere. 81.3% of respondents prioritize pandemic essentials like face masks and alcohol in their spending over other products, making it even harder for moms to allocate time and budget for nutrition.

Regardless of these challenges, moms want their children to be healthy and grow properly, understanding how vital it is to take care of their health in today's world. As moms, they always want what’s best for their kids, giving their all to nurture and nourish them, and providing them with the proper guidance to live a healthy life. As a result, moms are finding ways to put their children's health and development first.

Moms from the MOMAs community try their best to create a healthy environment at home. More than half of the respondents (68.2%) have made it a habit to prepare nutritious meals within their budget, while others (66.3%) have started doing family exercises together. And luckily, more moms (79.8%) have found a way to solve their nutri-problems by buying affordable nutritional drinks like milk to help give their children the added nutrition they need on top of healthy meals.

As a mom, I always prioritize providing proper nutrition to my children, so part of what I do for them is giving healthy food and vitamins with many nutritional benefits. This is why affordable milk like Alaska is a big help to me, as it is filled with nutrients and health benefits for my kids”).
Alaska Fortified Powdered Milk Drink has been continuously nourishing Filipino families, and with the findings from this survey and the determination shown by moms all over the country to provide what’s best for their children, the brand aims to bring nutrition even closer to every Filipino.

The survey has made it clear that children’s health and nutrition is a concern that has become more pronounced with the pandemic. In line with its mission to make quality nutrition more affordable, Alaska Fortified Powdered Milk Drink wants to continue providing “Alagang Alaska” and nourishing every Filipino family to help them through these trying times.

To assist moms in providing nutrition to their families, Alaska Fortified Powdered Milk Drink is launching its most affordable pack to date, with “Lakas at Talas” benefits to help with body and brain development. The Alaska Fortified Powdered Milk Drink “Super Sulit Pack” is available at 300g for PHP 70 and contains protein, calcium, and vitamin D for “lakas” which helps with healthy body development, and choline and iodine for “talas” which helps with brain development and growth. Paired with a healthy and well-balanced morning meal, Alaska Fortified Powdered Milk Drink provides nourishment in a delicious drink that kids can enjoy during breakfast.

With the launch of the ‘Super Sulit Pack’, Alaska Fortified Powdered Milk Drink shows its commitment to providing affordable yet quality nutrition to Filipino families. For just the price of PHP 70, Alaska continues to nourish our children through a tasty and nutritious drink in the morning.

The 4 best parenting hacks you should try

Try these tips for better parenting in the new normal

Whether we’re ready for it or not, parenting definitely changed during the pandemic. As everyone has to work or take classes at home for their health and safety, the needs of a parent have evolved.

If you’ve been struggling a little to match the demands of parenting in the new normal, worry not—here are a few tips to help you adapt to these times.

Set a schedule

Make a plan for yourself and help your kids plan their day. First, organize your day so you can focus better on your necessary tasks. Then, help your kids organize their day so that the important things during their online classes are prioritized. This will allow them to look forward to relaxing and unwinding after all the schoolwork is done. When kids know they have some rest and recreation time to look forward to, they’ll be able to participate better in their remote learning.

Encourage healthy routines in the household

Maintaining a proper and healthy lifestyle is considered to be one of the most important things you can do to achieve good physical, mental, and social well-being — especially in the new normal. A fun activity you can do with your kids is exercising regularly. To make it more interesting, instead of the usual exercises, try exploring games that’ll make them break a sweat such as DIY obstacle courses, treasure hunts, and many more. Be creative!

Take a midday shower

One good way to refresh your kids and keep them going is to have them take a quick shower in the middle of the day, preferably after lunch. You can do it too! It gets rid of the midday fatigue that’s built up from staring at a screen all morning, and it will energize them (and you) for the rest of the day.

Bond over activities and food

There are many moments in this pandemic where your kids will need you to be there for them. You need to set aside time in the day to give them your complete and undivided attention. Try playing fun activities and games with your kids and see how much stress can be lifted every day. Bond over mealtimes with food that will make them happy, such as Jollibee’s Jolly Spaghetti! The meatiest, cheesiest, and sweet-sarap na walang katulad taste of Jolly Spaghetti will make these moments truly memorable! It’s always better to put a smile on their face with their favorite food while spending time at home.

Get the Jolly Spaghetti from your nearest Jollibee store for only PHP 50.00 solo, and PHP 200.00 for a Family Pan! Have them safely delivered to you via the Jollibee Delivery App, JollibeeDelivery.com, #87000, GrabFood, and foodpanda! Also available in Drive-Thru and Take Out!

Tackling motherhood’s hard and unspoken realities at MommaCon 2021

MommaCon takes on how to mom online in this digital age and more for its second year

MANILA, Philippines -- Created and organized by award-winning integrated marketing experience agency TeamAsia, MommaCon continues to give women and moms a safe and collaborative space to share best practices and learn about topics on womanhood and motherhood. Following its successful and intimate premiere at the height of the pandemic in 2020, MommaCon is gearing up for its second year as it redefines what it means to be a mom in todays time, happening virtually on September 11 and 18, 2021.

Last years MommaCon talked about the glorious tasks of motherhood and uncovered meaningful topics -- ones that are usually swept under the rug. This year, times are changing and mothers are facing new challenges, opportunities and discoveries brought about by the rapidly-growing online world. To better navigate this, women and mothers from all walks of life are invited once again to MommaCon so they can engage in these meaningful discussions.

MommaCon 2021 will dive deeper into what it really takes to be a MOM Online'' in an evidently complex world. This year, MommaCon highlights the beauty of motherhood as moms are courageous, independent, resilient, and many more. The ideas and the stories of each mom varies in so many ways and if you want to uncover, be inspired, and listen to a colourful roster of moms then MommaCon is certainly the place for you.

Similar to last year's event, featured discussions are not only limited to usual mom topics like mom-preneurship, health and well-being, and modern-day parenting. Instead, MommaCon explores and provokes different themes and subjects that will empower mothers to speak freely and openly because these issues also matter. This includes the hard and unspoken conversations about motherhood including: dealing with trauma, single and same-sex parenting, writing your will, meeting your significant other during COVID, and so much more!

Apart from this, MommaCon will also feature some of the most globally and locally recognized women leaders who have inspired and empowered women, and they also happen to give a unique perspective on what it means to raise the next generation. Some of the speakers that are headlining the event are Global Woman Club CEO and founder Mirela Sula, Richwell Trading Corporation president and CEO Myrna Yao, and Asia CEO Events president and CEO Rebecca Bustamante. World Vision concerned by trending Covid-19 cases among children, urges more priority to their well-being

With the latest health reports of an increasing number of COVID-19 infections among children, World Vision urges family members especially the parents and adult caregivers to be mindful of the prescribed minimum health standards even while at home to also protect children and prevent viral transmission amidst the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ).

World Vision, an international child-focused NGO, also expressed its support to all stakeholders in upholding everyone’s welfare especially of children amidst the ECQ, and heightened restrictions in selected areas threatened by the more contagious Delta variant.

World Vision National Director Rommel V. Fuerte raised the need for adults to take this development seriously and be aware of children's risks if they remain complacent.

As of August 12, the Department of Health (DOH) records 87,663 active COVID-19 cases, making the overall total number of cases in the Philippines since last year to 1,700,363. Infected children nine years old and below comprise 4% or 65,558 cases while those between 10 to 19 years old represent 7% or 116,035.

Nationwide, the top six most affected regions are the National Capital Region, Region II Cagayan Valley, Region III Central Luzon, Region IV-A CALABARZON, Region VI Western VIsayas and Region VII Central Visayas.

“While there is urgency for adults to be vaccinated, we also call for the government to hasten the testing and immediate availability of safe and effective vaccines for children,” he added.

“Together with our partners, we pray that the global milestones in fighting this pandemic can be realized here in our country as well,” hopes Fuerte, who is also a Board Member of the Council for the Welfare of Children (CWC) under the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

Recently, a study by World Vision revealed that during lockdowns, children and their households suffer from a significant lack of access to basic health care services, increasing the risk of maternal and child morbidity.

During this pandemic, the child development agency also stressed the need to ensure babies' proper nutrition. World Vision technical program manager for health and nutrition Carleneth San Valentin, underscores the need to promote, protect and uphold exclusive breastfeeding among mothers, as a practical defense for infants zero to six months old against dreaded and preventable diseases

“The Implementing Rules and Regulations of laws that support breastfeeding are clearly provided in Executive Order No. 51 or the Philippine Milk Code and Republic Act 11148 or the “Kalusugan at Nutrisyon ng Mag-nanay Act”, the Health and Nutrition expert said while warning that breastmilk substitutes that undermine breastfeeding should not be included in the general distribution of emergency food packs.

San Valentin also added that everyone complies with guidelines from DOH Nutrition Cluster Advisory No. 1, Series 2020 which states that family food packs should contain age-and culturally appropriate, clean and nutritious food items to promote proper nutrition of children.

As stricter community quarantine protocols are implemented, children, based on the same Rapid Assessment, have expressed negative emotions such as sadness, fear and worry. It stated that almost half of the respondent parents and caregivers admitted that they have used physical or psychological punishment to children.

“A number of children are unaware or unsure about child protection services in their communities,” shared World Vision Technical Program Manager for Child Protection Jezreel Domingo, “so we urge the government to activate and ensure the functionality of Violence against Women and Children Desks and Barangay Councils for the Protection of Children, as stated in the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Advisory of April 2020.”

She also said that ensuring the continued functioning of child-friendly reporting mechanisms such as SOS hotlines allow concerned citizens to report any incident of abuse or exploitation.

The Child Protection Expert also reminded community stakeholders to enforce and monitor the DILG-CWC Joint Memorandum Circular No. 2020-001, which provides for the reiteration of protocols on reaching out to children in street situations, in need of special protection, at risk, and in conflict with the law during the Enhanced Community Quarantine.

One of the recommendations of the said study is to also assist families in ensuring children are “in school”, which, for World Vision Technical Program Manager of Education Geomel Jetonzo, is crucial to all Filipino learners’ safe, impactful and sustained education. As most school-aged children and students are now adapting to distance learning mode, it remains imperative that parents and children are made aware of the risks and measures to protect themselves from Covid-19 even while studying at home.

Model, TV host Kelly Misa-Fernandez talks about loyalty and creating long-lasting relationships

Kelly Misa-Fernandez, model, TV host, and one of the most recognized faces in the Philippines is one whose life is made complete and beautiful by people closest to her heart helping and teaching her every step of the way.

“Everything in my life that I have accomplished has never been done alone and I have been very fortunate to have met people who supported me, taught me, and enabled me to experience many things and become the best version of myself,” Kelly shared.

Long-lasting and genuine friendship

One of those people who has been intimately involved in her growth is her best friend, stylist, and former fashion editor Bianca Santiago-Reinoso who has been her rock and a constant in her life for many years. “We met in college and very early on we knew that we would be best of friends. I remember when she’d book styling gigs--she’d always recommend me and that opened a lot of doors for me. Bianca has seen me through a lot of my ups and downs and through it all she never left and pushed me to become better,” she said. “We’ve come a long way and I’m so glad that we remain close until now,” Kelly added, sharing how from fashion and work, they now bond over motherhood. “We’re at a different stage in our lives, but we still talk very often, to exchange stories and advice as we are raising our kids.”

The value of finding a good mentor

Her career that started when she was 19 was something born out of hard work and sheer determination and no one knows the lengths she went through more than her former manager Luis Espiritu. “Luis pushed me beyond my comfort zone and has always believed in me more than I believed in myself. And it was a very powerful feeling—having someone who had that much faith in me and tells me whenever I feel I’m not there yet that I’m already there. That was really inspiring for me and I will be forever grateful to Luis,” she said. Her manager’s unwavering support and loyalty motivated her to make the most of new and better opportunities, including projects that brought her to Hong Kong and different parts of Asia. “I wouldn’t have done them if it weren’t for Luis,” Kelly added.

Kelly said it feels rewarding to have the people who love and believe in her. This helped her gain confidence to pursue other aspirations. She became a fashion editor; a host of a travel lifestyle show and a noontime program and dabbled in acting. At present, she is also building her channel as a content creator and is a wife to Carlos Fernandez and mother to their son, Tristan Antonio.

A lifetime and reliable partner

For Kelly, loyalty is something she cherishes and is important in her daily life. “I really value loyalty because it is the cornerstone of the relationships I have with the most important people in my life—the fact that I feel safe and secure knowing that I have people I can rely on and that I can extend the same to them is a special thing to have,” she shared.

“The same applies to other facets of my life. As a consumer, having a trusted ally gives me less things to worry about and I can focus on doing things better because of reliable partners like PLDT Home.”

Kelly added how rewarding it is to become a loyal PLDT Home subscriber, thanks to their PLDT Home Rewards program. “I have been a PLDT Home subscriber for years and with the PLDT Home Rewards program, it’s gratifying to know that my loyalty is valued. I get to earn crystals for every transaction or activity, like when I pay my bills in full and on-time, when I enroll for my paperless billing, or when I purchase a PLDT Home gadget,” she shared. “And then I can use these crystals to get discounts from my favorite online shopping sites like Lazada, well-loved food and dining brands and even rebates to pay for PLDT and Smart products and services. But my most favorite of all is that I get to earn raffle entries to the PLDT Home Grand Giveaway where I can win as much as Php5 million!”

Indeed, loyalty and valuable partnerships open doors to rewarding opportunities. To learn more about the PLDT Home Rewards program, visit https://pldthome.info/KellyForHomeRewards.
