Shakey’s 45-year strong in the Philippines! Through THIN and THICK

Most of the industries threatened by the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, few have felt the impact as deeply and immediately.

The restaurant industry worldwide is currently facing the worst crisis ever. Never in history have people seen businesses being disrupted in a way that can make many brands irrelevant and at risk of permanent closure.

Yet amid this very volatile time, a few brands still endure.

Shakey’s Pizza celebrates its 45th year of continued operation in the Philippines and is now a strong leader in the family casual dining restaurant category in the country. This is a milestone for the brand known for its Thin-Crust Pizzas and Chicken ‘N’ Mojos, but the way to the top has not been easy.

Before going back to being a family-friendly brand that it is today, Shakey’s underwent several changes that had caused some worries for the brand. At one time, it was known as a beer joint, a place where people enjoyed live band music as they have some beer and pizzas. Even popular rock bands of that time could be found playing in different Shakey’s branches. When the popularity of this business model faded, the brand switched to being a quick-service restaurant and tried to compete with the bigger fast-food brands in the market.

Adapting to a quick-service model became a failure because the core of Shakey’s are high-quality, made-to-order products that are best shared with family and friends. The brand could not provide these products at the same quality in one or two minutes and at low prices. The food quality, service and store ambiance of Shakey’s deteriorated as well, and many guests started to abandon the brand. By the early 2000s, the brand was financially in trouble and the future for Shakey’s became bleak.

In 2003, the Shakey’s board saw the need for a major reorganization and to undergo a serious change management process to survive and redeem its once lofty image to the market. A new executive team was put in place with the current President and CEO Vicente Gregorio as head of the company. The idea to revitalize the Shakey’s brand by bringing it back to its core DNA came from Mr. Gregorio.

The brand position of “Fun, Family, Pizza” was introduced and it became Shakey’s focus. Being a product of the Shakey’s brand, Mr. Gregorio saw this as a logical strategy. His career at Shakey’s started in the mid-80s when he worked as a crew. During this time, the brand was number one. Mr. Gregorio brought with him a strong understanding of the brand and what made it tick for its chosen market. He also brought back with him 12 years of rich experience after leading other local and foreign restaurant brands.

Mr. Gregorio also introduced the Shakey’s Wow Culture, which emphasizes the need to always be better than before, better than others, and better than expected. He made it clear that the new Shakey’s Mission was to “WOW the Guests.” Under the new Shakey’s Executive and Management team. the need to be truly guest-centric was considered very crucial.

Because of the changes since 2003, Shakey’s and the company has delivered 16 consecutive years of double-digit growth in sales and profits. This is a feat that has never been done by any brand in the country before. Now, after 45 years, Shakey’s has remained to be a brand that is well-loved and trusted.

A change in majority ownership in April 2016 and the subsequent IPO in December 2016 has allowed Shakey’s and the company to have access to bigger and better resources, further improving the brand’s position to sustain business growth and relevance.

The year 2020 has started with a bang for Shakey’s. In the first two months, the company was on track to achieve its 17th consecutive year of high growth until this Covid-19 struck. Despite the crisis and the tough ECQ conditions, Shakey’s has managed to adjust quickly and adopt the necessary changes.

To date, almost all of Shakey’s stores have reopened and have performed relatively well compared with others. It is proof that the Shakey’s brand is truly resilient and it remains relevant to its guests even in a time of crisis.

Shakey’s recognizes that the path to full recovery will be slow. But the company remains confident and ready to take advantage of any opportunities that will come. The game plan is to bring back the brand to its familiar growth mode as soon as possible.

Since partial dine-in has been allowed. Shakey’s is excited to welcome its guests back and reintroduce them to the wowing restaurant experience that they were most fond of. A lot of changes are implemented to ensure the safety of the guests and staff. Health and Safety has always been a commitment of the brand, and now, it has put an even higher standard of safety protocols to make sure that the guests will know, feel and see that everything is safe in Shakey’s.

And as a way of thanking its very loyal guests, Shakey’s is celebrating its 45th anniversary with 45% off on Solo and Buddy Pack orders of Chicken ‘N’ Mojos when guests present a valid SuperCard. This is available until June 30, 2020 for Dine-in, Carry-out and Delivery.

Strong as ever, after 45 years of business in the Philippines, Shakey’s has proven that through earthquakes, coup d'états, typhoons, volcano eruptions, economic crisis and other adversities— through thin and thick, the brand has got what it takes to survive and grow. This can be attributed to our very supportive shareholders, very dedicated and capable employees, franchise partners, valued suppliers, and of course, our very important guests.

Sarap-In-A-Bun: Savor Max’s All-Time Favorite Chicken, Now In A Sandwich

Max’s Restaurant has done it again with a classic reinvention of its all-time favorite Sarap-To-The-Bones® fried chicken: introducing Max’s Fried Chicken Sandwich!

The classic Max’s fried chicken is undoubtedly well-loved by Filipinos across all generations. Although, not a lot of people know that the truly original way that this Filipino classic was first consumed all the way back in 1945 was with fresh, hot rolls on the side. As a throwback to its roots, you can now treat your taste buds to a Sarap-In-A-Bun chicken sandwich.

What’s inside?

A filleted version of Max’s iconic juicy, no-frills fried chicken seasoned and spiced the signature Max’s way. Now, it wouldn’t be a true Max’s experience without the trademark blend of banana ketchup and Worcestershire sauce, and that’s what’s drizzled over the chicken meat to add tang. Pickled cucumbers and shredded cabbage are then generously spread from top to bottom in between two buttery brioche buns to complete this flavorful and filling experience.

“Creatively re-engineering our Sarap-To-The-Bones® fried chicken to a sandwich puts us forward in providing our customers with more delightful ways to feast over classic local dishes that have stood the test of time,” says Max’s Restaurant Head Culinary R&D Chef Adrian Azurin.

“It’s Sarap-In-A-Bun, literally, with our hero fried chicken, now in a format that’s perfect for today’s adventurous, mobile consumers. We specially curated the blend of banana ketchup and Worcestershire sauce to stay true to the authentic Max’s experience. The pickled cucumbers are not something usually associated with our fried chicken, but we love how their tartness makes each bit surprisingly fresh and zesty.”

With the new Max’s fried chicken sandwich, you’ll be surprised by just how filling one bite can be. It’s also served with a side of Max’s sweet potato fries and a garlic mayo dip, making it even more satisfying for every diner’s appetites.

“Just one plate is an explosion of flavors. We’re proud to turn an everyday snack into every diner’s main course with the perfect meat-to-bun ratio, and toppings and condiments that make the whole dish shine,” adds Chef Adrian.

For 75 years, Max’s has continuously catered to the changing appetites of its diners with its product innovations, while also staying true to its culinary heritage built on Filipino values.

“Since 1945, Max’s has become the tradition and institution that it’s known to be now because of our founders Maximo Gimenez and Ruby Trota’s humble beginnings of befriending American occupation troops stationed in Quezon City and serving our Sarap-To-The-Bones® fried chicken with hot, fresh dinner rolls,” says Max’s Restaurant Marketing Director Mark De Joya.

“Our new fried chicken sandwich is a loving, respectful tribute to that. We believe this demonstrates the ability of our brand to balance both its history and heritage with new formats, flavors, and experiences that make Max’s forever relevant across generations.”

Indeed, everyone will come running to their nearest store and savor a massive bite of Max’s Fried Chicken Sandwich, available starting March 9 for only PHP249.

Teriyaki Boy and Sizzlin’ Steak Champions More Employment Opportunities for the Deaf

Beyond delivering a variety of delicious and value-friendly dishes, Teriyaki Boy and Sizzlin’ Steak have strengthened their advocacy of inclusion, diversity, and respect in the workplace through their partnership with communities and organizations such as CSB-SDEAS (College of Saint Benilde-School of Deaf Education and Advanced Studies) and LCDPFI (Leonard Cheshire Disability Philippines Foundation, Inc.), empowering deaf Filipinos with employment opportunities in their stores across the country.

Teriyaki Boy and Sizzlin’ Steak, both well-loved casual dining brands under Max’s Group, Inc., began extending relevant work openings to deaf individuals in 2018, starting with 10 employees who’ve been working as back of house staff handling the bar and sushi stations across several branches in the country. They look to provide even more members of the community the same opportunity with their renowned local partners aiding in the screening and training of qualified, capable members of the deaf community.

“We believe in the positive impact our advocacy carries not just for the deaf community, but also for our employees and customers. “Our pilot program of 10 employees last year proved to be successful based on very encouraging feedback from our staff and diners, and most importantly from the very uplifting experiences of our deaf employees. We look to expand this with the assistance of our gracious partners, the CSB-SDEAS and the LCDPFI,” shared Teriyaki Boy and Sizzlin’ Steak Chief Operating Officer John S. Amante.

The College of Saint Benilde-School of Deaf Education and Advanced Studies is at the forefront of building the Filipino Deaf identity and culture through its academic programs, formation programs, and role in brokering meaningful partnerships between the Hearing and the Deaf communities. Students are offered a holistic academic experience which revolves around personal development, faith formation, volunteerism, and self-expression. There is also continued support post-graduation for advocacy, employment, and social entrepreneurship through personal and professional development programs.

The Leonard Cheshire Disability Philippines Foundation, Inc. aims to protect and promote the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities (PWD) and access to equal opportunities to education, employment, and inclusion in society. LCDPFI is a part of a global alliance of more than 250 partners from 54 countries providing services and programs for PWDs.

The increase in employment opportunities is complemented by simple sign language guides to be implemented in select Teriyaki Boy and Sizzlin’ Steak stores for customers and staff to use in communicating with the deaf staff working there.

“Moving forward, it is our goal to continue bannering inclusivity and diversity in our workforce in our stores and ensure that Teriyaki Boy and Sizzlin’ Steak stores are safe spaces for the deaf and other persons with disabilities,” said Amante.
