John Ford Coley Performs in Santa Rosa

American singer John Ford Coley will be performing at the Santa Rosa Sports Coliseum is Santa Rosa, Laguna on August 11, 2018 produced by Ovation Productions.  John is a classically trained pianist, guitarist, actor and author most known for his partnership in the musical duo England Dan & John Ford Coley.

John is not new to Filipinos as he has frequently visited the Philippines due to the massive popularity here of England Dan & John Ford Coley music.  His first visit to Manila was via a three night Valentines weekend concert at the Folk Arts Theater in 2000  where he appeared with the late Jimi Jamison of Survivor, David Pack, and Ambrosia. Rupert Holmes who was initially in the bill was a no-show. Working together in Manila enabled John and Ambrosia to do more frequent appearances and collaborations together in the U.S. on many occasions.  The Valentines concerts were produced by Ovation Productions who brought them back together after a few years to open for the band America at the Araneta Coliseum.

At 16, Coley, along with schoolmate Dan Seals formed an acoustic act simply named England Dan & John Ford Coley. The duo was signed by A&M Records. In 1971, the two moved from Dallas, Texas to Los Angeles where they opened for numerous bands. Their first break came in 1972 with the song Simone. It became a number one hit in Japan and was popular in France. However, Simone did not fare as well in the United States, and the two were released from their contract with A&M after three albums.

Two years later, they acquired another record deal from Atlantic Records and released the song I'd Really Love to See You Tonight. Overall they had four top-ten hits and two top-twenty hits. They were nominated for a Grammy Award and received triple-platinum and gold records and released eight albums; additionally, other recordings were released abroad.

The duo disbanded in 1980. After the passing of England Dan (Danny Seals, brother of Jim Seals of 1970s soft rock duo Seals and Crofts), John’s solo performances have gotten more attention and have given John renewed purpose to continue performing the hits that the duo have been known for (John fondly referred to their act as ‘Mutt & Jeff’ due to their height difference). One  major issue for the disbanding of England Dan and John Ford Coley was change of musical direction as England Dan wanted to pursue country music.

England Dan and John Coley classic hits which John continues to perform in his solo concerts include It's Sad To Belong, Soldier In The Rain, Gone Too Far, Love Is The Answer, What's Forever For, Broken Hearted Me, I’d Really Like to See You Tonight, Nights are Forever Without You, We’ll Never Have to Say Goodbye Again, What Can I Do With this Broken Heart, Just Tell Me You Love Me. John also does great covers of The Bread’s Make It With You, Dan Fogelberg’s Longer and Leader of the Band, Dan Hill’s Sometimes When We Touch, among many others. In his Santa Rosa Laguna concert, John Ford Coley will have popular OPM singer-songwriter Noel Cabangon as front act.

(John Ford Coley concert tickets are available at SM and online through www.smtickets.com. Ticket prices are P3300, 2800, 1800, 800 plus ticketing charges. For info call 02-4702222 or 0917-1495950, 0956-0922765, 049-5113376.)

Art Auction

“Samantha” will consist of around 40 artworks, some on fabric to be used as fashion accessories and others on canvas for wall hangings.

“Samantha uses a wide variety of media for her work and we wanted to show the gamut of her abilities. She works primarily on piƱa silk using silk paints. She also uses acrylic paint on canvas sometimes,” explains Samantha’s mother, Mitzi.

“She has a consistent style with a lot of edges and lines, her artworks can be very linear. She also has this certain way of giving shapes to her images which aren’t necessarily realistic but are more cartoonish,” describes Samantha’s father, Martin.

While half-Swiss, Samantha always tries to tap into her Filipino roots, coming up with Filipino-themed artworks. She will be promoting some of that local culture when she heads to the Philippine Center in New York for the Fashion Arts Autism Benefit (FAAB) on April 7.

Samantha Kaspar with art coach Kenn Sioson

FAAB is meant to showcase the artistic talents of children with special needs. Samantha, diagnosed with Autism when she was one and a half years old, is one of eight artists chosen to present their paintings on piƱa silk to be translated into clothing by featured designers for the fashion show, Patis Tesoro and Anthony Legarda. Master weaver India Legaspi is credited for teaching the artists the technique of piƱa silk painting.

Samantha hopes to fund her trip with the proceeds of her auction.

Manila Symphony Orchestra

Concert

The Manila Symphony Orchestra’s “Soundtracks and Symphonies” will be conducted by Prof. Arturo Molina and annotated by Jeffrey Solares. Included in their repertoire is a John Williams tribute as well as pieces from greats such as Beethoven, Mozart, and Bach.

The concert is for the benefit of Special Education (SPED) Centers that have been the focus of the Center for Possibilities’ recent efforts. To act as a venue for learning of indigent persons with special needs, each SPED Center is operated by a teacher trained in the SPED division of Reach International School.

Samantha w art coach Kenn, parents Martin & Mitzi and members of the CFP

The Sagada SPED Center has been up and running and will be enhanced with a series of livelihood and vocational programs that will be teaching skills for income-generating activities. “Caring for special kids is very taxing because it’s usually just a one-income household so we also need to help the parents improve their finances,” explains CFP founder, Dolores Cheng.

In Norzagaray, what they have right now is just the building itself. A fence, a water tank, and a playground are still needed. “We are also in the process of doing our due diligence by determining the number of special children in all the barangays relevant to Norzagaray. Next will be an orientation for all the parents within the community. We are subsequently planning for the provision of testing, diagnosis, and analysis for the children with special needs,” Cheng adds.

Enrolment in the SPED Centers is free so it helps alleviate the family’s cost of taking care of special children. If you would like to extend assistance, you may reach CFP at http://centerforpossibilities.asia/ or (02) 723-1242 / (0918) 888-1759.

“Samantha” and “Soundtracks and Symphonies” will be on January 28, 2016, 5:30pm at the Carlos P. Auditorium of the RCBC Plaza, Makati.
