New breed of racers trained at the Toyota Gazoo Racing Academy Philippines

Motorsports enthusiasts feel the thrill of the tracks with the Vios OMR cars

Continuing its mission of promoting motorsports and igniting a passion for the sport among Filipinos, Toyota Gazoo Racing Academy (TGRA) Philippines is back this year for yet another run. TGRA is part of leading mobility company Toyota Motor Philippines’ motorsports program in conjunction with its one-make-race series, the Toyota Gazoo Racing Vios Cup.

TGRA aims to provide an avenue for race enthusiasts to get started on the sport through practical training led by industry professionals. This 2022, TGRA welcomed a number of neophytes and first-time racers to the tracks.

“What’s very important about having these newcomers join the class is it means that there is really a lot of interest out there to participate,” said JP Tuason, lead instructor for TGRA.

The importance of the race academy

Being the first and only program of its kind in the Philippines, the TGRA aims to offer a platform for aspiring racers and motorsports fans to get a professional training combined with a heart-racing driving experience.

“Through the Toyota Gazoo Racing Academy, we give our students a proper, safer venue instead of them racing on the streets. At the same time, they will learn the proper way of driving. I think it’s a very good program for Toyota to reach out to the young ones,” said Ferdinand Ong, race director for the Toyota GAZOO Racing Vios Cup and one of the instructors during the TGRA class.

TGRA is divided into two levels. The first level teaches racers the basics of driving a car geared for racing. Activities during the level one training include braking, follow-the-leader, and slalom exercises. The level two class is designed to teach more advanced racing skills for those looking to become professional racers. With these specialized lessons, Toyota aims to push the limits of participants for them to become better drivers.

Drawn together by their love for racing, Toyota Gazoo Racing Academy participants gathered to learn and race at the Clark Speedway.

For the love of racing

Drawn together by their love for racing, racing students, both young and young-at-heart, zoomed through the Clark Speedway during the TGRA classes.

“When I got the chance to join the Academy this year, I jumped at that opportunity,” said Carla Lizardo, one of the participants during the 2021 Toyota Gazoo Racing Vios Cup Autocross Challenge. “I love it, I was able to learn so much in a day. I really wanted to dive into the details of racing and I got that today.”

Felvin Gurrea, a participant who took both level 1 and 2 training sessions with TGRA, also shared his thoughts on the experience. “Toyota Gazoo Racing Academy is really helpful because it teaches you the basics before you move to the next step in racing. It’s a very organized racing academy and they take care of you until you learn,” he said.

Felvin, who is set to compete in the upcoming 2022 Toyota Gazoo Racing Vios Cup, recorded the fastest time and was recognized as first placer in the slalom exercise during theTGRA class. When asked why he joined the Academy and why he looks forward to the upcoming Vios Cup, he answered simply: “I love the challenge, the thrill and the adrenaline.”

Felvin Gurrea took both level 1 and 2 training sessions with TGRA and is set to compete in the 2022 Toyota Vios Cup.

The TGRA classes also proved to be a unique shared experience with the family for several participants. Father and son Darwyn and Ethan Mercado both joined the TGRA and raced side-by-side during the classes.

“What I really treasure is the time together,” said Darwyn. “We would like to thank Toyota for bringing this kind of program to the Philippines. For my son and I, this has been a bonding experience.”

Similarly, Jesse and Joshua Marquez also attended the TGRA event at the Clark Speedway together. Joshua is an avid fan and participant of motorsports activities, including cart racing and simulation racing. This year, Joshua has decided to venture into car racing, thus joining the TGRA. Having driven the Clark Speedway via simulator in the past, Joshua says that driving it in real life is at once a new but familiar feeling.

“Experiencing that for the first time is surreal. It’s a pinch-yourself-moment that I’m actually here,” Joshua said.

Jesse, who came to support his son Joshua during the classes, expressed that TGRA was a step towards Joshua’s dreams of joining the Toyota Gazoo Racing Vios Cup.

“I wanted Joshua to try the academy first before transitioning from cart to car,” Jesse shared. “As far as I’m concerned, whatever his dreams are, we support him as a family.

Ready, set, start!

For those looking to jump start their journey towards professional racing, TGRA Philippines continues to accept participants for the 2022 classes.

“We believe that the racing class is not only an experience but also an investment. By coming to the class, they invest in themselves to become better drivers,” said JP Tuason. “Whether you want to become a professional race car driver or you just want to become a better driver on the road – this is the place to start.”

The next session of the Toyota Gazoo Racing Academy Level 1 will once again take place at the Clark Speedway on June 26, 2022. To apply you may register through the following link.

Vince Velasco on building an easy fitness habit at home - Kickstart your fitness journey with the PLDT Home ambassador and one of the metro’s most sought-after fitness instructors!

Rain or shine, now is the best time to start your fitness journey. Whether to feel good about yourself or prepare for your vacation at the beach, getting in shape is always done best when you’re inspired and having fun, says TV/events host, fitness instructor, and PLDT Home ambassador Vince Velasco.

“The key is to do something you find fun so you avoid burning out, and then, to consistently work on one’s weaknesses and integrate them with the exercise that they love,” he shares as his number one workout advice.

Vince spends a lot of time keeping fit at the gym, and as a diehard NBA fan, he takes inspiration from some of the strongest and most athletic basketball players in the league — all of whom, he follows closely on social media and in the games accessed through the NBA League Pass powered by PLDT Home.

Among his fitness inspirations are Michael Jordan and Dwayne Wade and aside from their athleticism, Vince loves the NBA for the intense rivalries and matchups. As the NBA Finals draws closer, he gets to view the games and the play-by-play commentaries on his gadgets anytime of the day through an NBA League Pass powered by PLDT Home.

“The NBA League Pass is a game-changer for us especially if you love stats and data," Vince says. “It offers live stats so you get to track the teams’ standing, and because I’m always on-the-go, the multiple viewing feature makes the experience optimized whether I’m watching from a phone, a tablet, or a laptop.”

Vince also enjoys the interactive features of the NBA League Pass. “The polls and other activities in the app keep the games interesting,” he says. “So aside from witnessing the games live and on-demand, there’s also the entertainment aspect that can be appreciated by die-hard basketball fans and after-hour athletes alike.”

Over time, Vince’s fitness journey led him toward hosting, modeling, and even acting. He is now one the most sought-after fitness instructors in the metro serving as an inspiration to many others! Curious on how Vince reached and maintained his peak form? Read on to know more about his fitness pointers!

1. Draw from your motivation

From his studio work as a boxing and high-intensity workout instructor, Vince eventually took his classes to the digital space because of the pandemic. He later witnessed the rising demand for his Zoom classes and fitness videos, as more people did their workouts at home. Through PLDT Home Fiber’s fastest and strongest connection powering his home, Vince was able to conduct his workout classes with no interruption.

He finds teaching others as his own way of paying it forward to those who are struggling with their own fitness goals and other body issues.

"I was overweight and had body image issues when I was younger. Seeing so many people have the same issues as I did inspired me to help them to achieve their fitness goals," he said.

2. Take it easy

To lose weight, Vince first went through rigorous exercises and put together a calorie deficit program for months. He kept his workouts intense with cardio sessions and strength training sessions. He followed a clean diet, staying away from sweets and other processed foods.

“I used to fall off the wagon from time to time. Later, I learned to take things slow and methodical,” he recalls. “Now, I just eat intuitively, work out consistently, and stay in a calorie deficit diet. There's really no need for you to be averse to desserts and carbs all the time.”

3. Stay inspired!

Vince keeps himself motivated through the support of his family and friends. “My personal fitness journey wasn’t all smooth sailing. I had to work on it, and improve my fitness and career goals from a more realistic and enjoyable perspective,” he says. “Now, I find it extremely exhilarating to pass on that feeling and mindset to others.”

For non-stop basketball action, PLDT Home subscribers can avail of of the monthly NBA League Pass package at PHP 485. The pass provides unlimited access to an entire season of NBA games in high-definition for one whole month.

Gretchen Ho: ‘Meeting NBA legends only humbled me down’

Having had the privilege to meet the likes of Michael Jordan and Stephen Curry once upon a time, PLDT Home Ambassador Gretchen Ho reveals the most important life lessons she’s learned in her career as a sportswoman
Volleyball may have been Gretchen Ho’s ticket to fame as one of the Ateneo Lady Eagles’ Fab Five during the 2010s — the sport that paved her way to being a celebrity athlete and journalist. But catch the PLDT ambassador in a heart-to-heart, and she’ll let you in on her first great love — basketball.

“My dad was a basketball player in his youth, so he would always teach us how to play and keep us abreast with the latest basketball games. My three brothers and I grew up to be basketball lovers! We’re a very sporty family, so enjoying the NBA with them was just one natural way we bonded together,” Gretchen recalls.

From an NBA fangirl to a bona fide sportscaster who has covered the games on location and met the league’s stars in person way back when, Gretchen — like many other basketball fans — has found new ways to enjoy the games despite the pandemic. The TV5 and One News anchor remains updated with the league’s 75th season through the NBA League Pass, the NBA’s premium live game subscription service. Using the League Pass, made more affordable and accessible through PLDT Home Fiber, Gretchen is able to watch the games and other exclusive content with the family — an experience that triggers many childhood memories and even life aspirations.

An NBA fangirl’s dream
One of Gretchen's most memorable NBA moments was watching the historic Chicago Bulls - Utah Jazz Finals Game 6 back in 1998. At eight years old, she saw Michael Jordan steal the ball from Karl Malone, with the Jazz leading 86-85 and with 18.9 seconds left. A young Gretchen found herself sharing the victorious moment as MJ nailed that game-winning jumper to give the Bulls their sixth title.
“When Michael Jordan made his final winning shot, I was jumping up and down the bed in my pajamas! Sabi ko nga nung bata ako, pangarap ko maging NBA player — hindi WNBA, NBA talaga! I don’t know why I said that to my dad as a young girl!” she recalls with a laugh.

While the opportunity to be an NBA player remains a hoop dream, Gretchen was able to experience the next best thing: Covering the NBA All-Star Weekend twice in a row as a sports journalist.

“It was surreal for me and a great privilege. Seeing all the top NBA athletes come together to play felt like being in the Disneyland of basketball. It was great seeing how agile, strong, and flawless they were in their play,” she enthuses.

Among Gretchen’s biggest NBA fangirl moments were in 2018, when she interviewed Chris Bosh who was then set to retire from a blood clot injury; and in 2019, when she saw Michael Jordan himself in the historic Staples Center (now Crypto.com Arena) in Los Angeles.

“I’ve always loved every chance I got to tell these stories. As an athlete and a sports fan myself, I've always made sure to pour my heart into sharing these inspiring journeys to the audiences,” she says of the experience.

Her hardcourt inspiration

It is every sports fan’s dream to meet their idols in person. In Gretchen’s case, not only did she meet Golden State Warrior’s Stephen Curry, she also hosted two events for him during his time in Manila.
“Steph Curry is a phenomenal game changer—the first player in NBA history to make 3,000 career 3-pointers. And yet, he stays humble. I love who he is inside and outside the court. He’s very playful on the court and a great family man off it,” she shares.

Gretchen personally feels drawn to stories of underdogs who had fought through with nothing but perseverance — much like San Francisco’s Golden Boy.

“Beyond the games, what I love about the NBA are the inspiring stories the league's stars carry with them. It’s amazing how much hard work they put into their craft to stand out and make a mark among other great basketball players around the world,” she says.

“What I love the most are stories of players who have been undervalued yet have worked their way up with constant improvement, quality in performance, and commitment so they can be the best they could ever be. I think this is relatable to anybody who aspires to be better in whatever they do.”

A growing NBA community
It’s this underdog arc that Gretchen finds relatable to many Filipinos — known for pulling through adversity in any sport, career, or just about any situation.

“It’s no secret. Everywhere you go in the Philippines, there’s always a basketball court! If not a full one, there’s at least a makeshift one on some post or board,” she muses.

Gretchen especially feels delighted that Filipino athletes are now making it in the league. Take for example Utah Jazz’s Jordan Clarkson and Houston Rockets’ Jalen Green, she says, two Filipino-American athletes now sharing the NBA court for the first time and making a mark in the league.

“This just goes to show that the Filipino can make it. I love it when Jordan and Jalen openly acknowledge that they are Filipinos! It makes the dream to send a full-blooded Filipino even more reachable when you see the two of them doing well in the NBA!”

These days, even with no NBA field assignments, Gretchen stays updated with the league through her devices. As the excitement continuously piles up on the NBA’s historic 75th Anniversary Season, Gretchen remains connected to the world’s biggest basketball league — through the NBA League Pass powered by PLDT Home.
For fans like Gretchen who can get technical about the games, the NBA League Pass offers live stats and multiple viewing options. It also includes the NBA Mobile View, which delivers a closer shot of the action optimized for viewing on smartphones, tablets, and other mobile devices.

“It is a great way to keep up with the jam-packed schedule of games, storylines, and tributes. With NBA League Pass, I’m able to watch the marquee games live and on-demand,” Gretchen says. “I also love that it has many great features — like using different camera angles so I can view every heart-stopping moment the way I want to!”

With NBA League Pass charged to your PLDT Home Fiber bill, Filipino homes can have a virtual front-row seat to a variety of games for as low as P85 a month!

PLDT Home remains the undisputed fastest broadband network in the Philippines after an impressive speed performance for the second half of 2021, dominating its telco rivals with a Speed Score™ of 77.24 at the Ookla® Speedtest Awards. With the brand’s fast and reliable internet connection, NBA fans can enjoy uninterrupted sports action and continue to be updated on the league and its biggest stars this season and beyond!

EJ Obiena joins Alyssa Valdez as Allianz PNB Life Brand Ambassador

  • Filipino Olympian EJ Obiena is the newest Allianz PNB Life ambassador
  • Allianz as the Worldwide Insurance Partner of the Olympic and Paralympic Movements from 2021 to 2022

Elite pole vaulter, world number five, Olympian, and current Asian record holder EJ Obiena is the newest face of Allianz PNB Life.

He joins volleyball star Alyssa Valdez, who officially became part of Allianz PNB Life‘s lineup of brand ambassadors last June.

After reaching the pole vault final in the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, Obiena continued to compete in more events in Europe. This included his latest historic bid in Austria, where he broke his personal record—as well as the Asian mark—when he cleared 5.93m.

Before Austria, Obiena was already able to tally a new personal and national record after clearing the 5.91m mark in a pole vault competion in Paris last August 29, 2021.

In his most recent appearance in a webinar presented by Allianz PNB Life last July, the star pole vaulter shared, “I just put myself into the work that I've been doing, the tasks that I have accepted, and [what] I should be doing.”

But even as he’s high on an international record-breaking streak, Obiena remains grounded.

“If you're open to learning, if you're open to growing, and you can see the small improvements, I think that's a win,” he said.

Obiena, however, wasn’t immune to the toll of the pandemic either.

While being successful from a young age, living away from his family and training in isolation is still difficult for him. With some help from his coach, Obiena was soon enough able to get back on track to Tokyo 2020 and later competitions.

Likewise, Allianz PNB Life joins Obiena’s team in backing the athlete to make more confident leaps and bounds into the future. For Obiena, this is especially important as he prepares himself for future competitions.

“Supporting passionate athletes like E.J. Obiena is part of our mission to be the global insurer of sport and sustainability,” said Alexander Grenz, CEO and President of Allianz PNB Life.

Last January, Allianz officially began its eight-year Worldwide Partner for Olympic and Paralympic Movements until 2028. Allianz has supported the International Paralympic Committee since 2006, most recently as an International Partner.

In 2018, Allianz had the chance to build on more than a decade of success with the Paralympic Movement by becoming the Worldwide Insurance Partner of the Olympic & Paralympic Movements. This served as a big opportunity to drive impact on their strategy along the dimensions of people, business, and brand.

As one of the world’s most sustainable insurers, Allianz integrates waste and carbon emissions reduction, as well as employing a fair and diverse workforce, in its operations. Locally, Allianz PNB Life advocates for green mobility through Ride Safe, an award-winning campaign that promotes cycling among Filipinos.

Ginto: Jollibee and McCann Worldgroup Philippines release special Kwentong Jollibee on Hidilyn Diaz’s inspiring journey

While the whole nation rejoiced and celebrated the historic feat of Hidilyn Diaz during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, not everyone knew of the hardships that she had to overcome to reach her dream of winning the country’s first Olympic Gold medal. Now, her story of “lakas at puso” which made all that possible is immortalized in Jollibee’s latest Kwentong Jollibee, “Ginto”.

Jollibee is one with Filipinos in paying tribute to Hidilyn
through her own Kwentong Jollibee short film

The short film chronicles the life-long journey of Hidilyn in typical Kwentong Jollibee fashion – heartwarming, tugs at the heartstrings and filled with life lessons – while aimed at continuing to inspire Filipinos to reach their own dreams.

“We wanted to pay tribute not just to Hidilyn’s victory, but to her strength, heart and resilience, which truly brought joy and uplifted the nation. And we thought it fitting to produce her own Kwentong Jollibee, not just to thank her for her feat but to somehow share her story so that we Filipinos can continue to be inspired by what she has achieved”, said Arline Adeva, Jollibee Philippines Assistant Vice President and Head of Brand PR, Engagement, and Digital Marketing.

Ginto showed how Hidilyn, despite the lockdown and being away from her family,
persevered to reach her golden dream.

“Ginto” is directed by internationally acclaimed and resident Kwentong Jollibee director Pepe Diokno. The latest Kwentong Jollibee film is centered on how Hidilyn has become a champion and a Filipino icon who proved that hard work and grit pays off. “People can expect an inspiring story about dealing with defeat, and winning with perseverance,” he said. Direk Pepe also added that giving hope and providing inspiration was at the core of this latest Kwentong Jollibee film. “I think with the current situation, many Filipinos feel defeated and divided, but Hidilyn’s win gave us strength and brought us together,” he said.

Hidilyn shared that she is honored to have her own Kwentong Jollibee,
and is proud to be part of a well-loved Filipino brand.

For her part, Hidilyn cherished being part of her own, special Kwentong Jollibee. “Lahat naman tayo kilala ang Kwentong Jollibee. Usually, ito yung tungkol sa love and relationships. Masaya lang ako kasi naipakita dito yung love for sports, love for your dream, and love for your country. Sana naipakita namin yung inspirasyon na maidudulot nung Kwentong Jollibee Ginto,” Hidilyn said.
Hidilyn’s Kwentong Jollibee shows how “lakas at puso” are key to achieving your dreams

While Hidilyn’s rise to become a modern-day icon and the country’s pride and joy was well-documented, Jollibee and McCann worked together to creatively tell her story in a way that would make a lasting impact. “Everyone knows her story by now so the challenge was how to shine a new light on her in a way that would inspire and motivate Filipinos who may also be experiencing struggles and challenges,” explained NJ Mijares, Creative Director of McCann Worldgroup Philippines. “With every Kwentong Jollibee we create, we always ask ourselves ‘is this relatable? Will other people feel the same way?’ More so with this one. Because we're telling a story of a very specific person with a very specific achievement, we tried to tell it in a way that mirrors the dreams, the struggles, and the journey of millions of Filipinos.”

Watch the Kwentong Jollibee Ginto on the official Jollibee Facebook page and on Jollibee Studios YouTube channel, and join the conversation online by using the hashtag #KwentongJollibeeGinto.

Alex Eala victorious in singles and doubles action of J1 Roehampton in London

Alex Eala’s build-up towards Wimbledon is off to a roaring start as the Filipina tennis star beat Darja Vidmanova of Czech Republic in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, in the J1 Roehampton tournament on Thursday morning (Philippine time) in London.

The 16-year old tennis sensation and long-time Globe ambassador is looking to conquer Wimbledon and win her third grand slam tournament in her young but decorated career. But first, she is looking to gain some more experience playing on grass and is using this International Tennis Federation (ITF) Grade 1 tournament to further sharpen her skills heading to the 2021 Wimbledon tournament, which starts on Monday, July 5, 2021.

The no. 3 ranked juniors player in the world had no trouble disposing of the 18-year old Vidmanova, who is currently ranked no. 35 in the ITF juniors rankings.

Eala’s next opponent will be Matilde Paoletti of Italy.

Meanwhile, Eala was also victorious in the doubles tournament as she and 18-year old Indonesian Priska Madelyn Nugroho slipped past Nicole Rivkin of Germany and Hanne Vandewinkel of Belgium, 7-6, 7-5. The Eala-Nugroho tandem has had tremendous success in the past, winning the Australian Open girls’ doubles title back in 2020.

Eala and Nugroho’s opponent in the next round will be the pair of Barbora Palicova of the Czech Republic and Radka Zelnickova of Slovakia.

Allianz PNB Life teams up with United City Football Club

Allianz PNB Life has partnered with United City Football Club (UCFC) for the upcoming AFC Champions League and the 2021 Philippine Football League (PFL), the top football league in the country.

CEO Alex Grenz and CMO Gino Riola proudly show off the jerseys for the Allianz-sponsored UCFC team.

The professional football club based in New Clark City, Tarlac announced its partnership with the major life insurance brand last June 16.

“From football to drone racing, Allianz has long been an active force behind all sorts of athletes across the world. Through this latest partnership with the UCFC, Allianz PNB Life aims to extend that tradition to the Philippines and the Asian region,” said CEO Alexander Grenz.

Globally, Allianz is best known for having seven state-of-the-art stadiums to its name. Among these are Allianz Stadium in Turin, which has seated over 6 million Juventus Football Club fans since 2011, and the Allianz Riviera in Nice, one of its greenest structures to date.

Last January, Allianz officially signed on to be the eight-year Worldwide Insurance Partner for Olympic & Paralympic Movements. It will begin its stint at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, where it will support over 11,000 athletes and their families and continue to champion sustainable development.

As the exclusive jersey partner of the UCFC, Allianz PNB Life will be featured on the home and away versions of the limited edition AFC Champions League kits, as well as in the fan-designed PFL uniforms and all replica merchandise shirts.

Eric Gottschalk holds up the Allianz-sponsored jersey beside the AFC Champions League banner.

“It is a great win to have a leading global brand with a strong reputation engage in long-term sports partnership and that football could receive the same kind of support here in the Philippines–even amidst a pandemic,” said Eric M. Gottschalk, President and Co-founder of United City Football Club.

He hopes that with the steady rise of the sport in the country, Allianz’ sponsorship could get other brands to support local and regional football too.

“Allianz proudly celebrates human achievement through sport and innovation. Inspiring millions with the stories and feats of our athletes sets the pace for a world that is more active, united, and inclusive,“ said Grenz.
