PH mobile internet ranks 6th in APAC in latest Akamai report

Globe network stimulates higher mobile speed experience

For the first time in many years, Akamai Technologies included the Philippines in the country ranking for mobile internet speeds. And the results did not disappoint Filipino consumers.

With an average speed of 8.5 Mbps, the Philippines ranked 6th in the average mobile internet connection speed according to the 2nd Akamai State of Internet Report. The latest Akamai report also reveals that the Philippines also achieved 105.1 Mbps peak mobile speed which in the third highest in Asia Pacific next to Australia and Thailand.

Globe Telecom’s efforts to improve internet experience of its customers advanced significantly in the first 100 days of the Duterte administration, as the company managed to drive the mobile internet speed ranking of the Philippines with its 1st world internet campaign.

Globe President & CEO Ernest Cu reiterated the company’s commitment to improve the state of internet in the Philippines in order to make the nation admired globally.
“More and more Filipinos are becoming dependent on fast and reliable internet connectivity, it is imperative that telco operators like Globe work closely with the government in expanding and improving telecommunication services,” Cu said.
Cu emphasized Globe is maximizing the use of additional frequency assets it obtained from the sellout of San Miguel’s telco assets in line with its commitment to the National Telecommunications Commission to deploy about 4,500 multiband, multimode software defined radio base station equipment to 95% of total municipalities and cities in the country, intended to improve overall customer experience in terms of speed and reliability of mobile internet services.

To date, Globe has already completed deployment of LTE 700 in 200 sites, mostly in Metro Manila as well as LTE 2600 in 900 sites, mostly in Visayas and Mindanao. According to Cu, sites where the LTE 700 and LTE 2600 have been deployed cover major business districts and highly-urbanized and populated areas in the country.

Cu further disclosed that Globe also expanded its GoWiFi network as it recently completed deployment of the service in close to 500 sites that include Ayala Malls, fast food chains, bus terminals, convenience stores and other public places. He added that Globe is working on widening its WiFi coverage and plan to deploy GoWiFi services in close to 1,000 sites across the country. This will provide WiFi coverage not only Metro Manila but also in Davao, Cebu, Bulacan, Cavite, Cagayan Valley, Cagayan de Oro, Nueva Vizcaya, Dumaguete, Zamboanga and Boracay.

Launched in 2015, GoWiFi, the company’ premium open national WiFi network, is now serving close to 3 million customers per month. The company’s national WiFi network is open to any customer with a WiFi enabled device. While customers are able to access the service for free for 30 minutes a day, customers can easily purchase GoWiFi credits which they can use in any GoWiFi hotspot.

According to Cu, the company is also about to complete deployment of free Wi-Fi services in all MRT Line 3 stations, enabling Globe customers riding the MRT to efficiently make use of their transit time as they are now able to access the internet for free.

The deployment of free Wi-Fi services is expected to benefit around 350,000 daily passengers of MRT Line 3. Each passenger will be given free Wi-Fi access for 30 minutes daily, said Cu, emphasizing that provision of free WiFi services in all MRT3 stations is part of the company’s initiative to enhance network capacities.

Aside from MRT Line 3, Globe also signed an agreement to provide free Wi-Fi services in all 20 LRT stations. In addition to deployment of WiFi services, Globe will also provide fiber optic cable system that will extend the length of the entire LRT 1 and cover all LRT stations and LRMC’s depot in Pasay City. Globe also recently signed with the Metro Manila Development Authority a similar agreement that will allow the telco provider to deploy wireless infrastructure in MMDA controlled areas as part of its efforts to enhance network coverage and capacities.

The 2Q Akamai report also showed the Philippines has average internet speed of 4.3 Mbps in fixed broadband, up by 24% QoQ and 27% YoY. The country registered the strongest growth in Asia Pacific region in terms of “above 4Mbps connectivity adoption” at 33% adoption rate, growing 79% QoQ and 116% YoY.

For above 10 Mbps connectivity adopted, the country showed a 5% adoption, growing by 86% QoQ and 683% YoY. For 15Mbps connectivity adoption rate, the country is at a nascent 2.1% adoption, up 109% QoQ and 872% YoY.

PH scores high among Starters category of Global Connectivity Index ; Aspires to be in Adopters, Frontrunners

Despite the absence of public investments in enhancing broadband access and speed, the Philippines scored high among Starters category of the Global Connectivity Index (GCI), published by Huawei Technologies, which measures how 50 nations are progressing with digital transformation using information and communications technology. Starters are countries in the early stage of ICT infrastructure build-out.

The Philippines garnered a score of 33, the highest score given among countries classified as Starters, which are economies with an average GDP of US$3,000 and have GCI range of 20-34. The country advanced two notches from its previous score in 2015 at 31. According to GCI, countries classified as Starters focus on increasing ICT supply to give more people access to the digital world.

According to the GCI report, economies classified as Starters show the following characteristics: ICT investment is less than 2 percent of GDP; E-commerce is low at US$5,000 per capita per year; and about 40% of the population uses the Internet. “Starters are not fully benefiting from the digital economy and its potential to raise incomes and overall quality of life. Policy makers need to ensure ICT maturity enters the second stage, Internet Innovation, so e-commerce can create economic growth. Faster broadband expansion is necessary to increase supply scores so that most businesses and citizens have affordable broadband access,” the report said.

To enter the next category called Adopters, Starters should adopt several strategies that include increase in ICT investment as a percentage of GDP to accelerate nationwide broadband coverage; reduce tariffs and provide subsidies for smartphones to get more smart devices into homes; start planning for high-speed broadband with 4G and fiber-to-the-home rollout.

Globe has been at the forefront of providing the digital lifestyle for Filipinos. The company persistently called on the government to help develop broadband access by investing in internet infrastructure in rural and far-flung areas. Globe President & CEO Ernest Cu has emphasized that broadband development is particularly relevant in communities where even basic infrastructure services such as roads and bridges are lacking, pointing out that broadband access creates significant impact on the development of marginal areas as this allows the community to conduct business with people all over the world, get information on education, health and government services. According to Cu, mobile operators like Globe are unable to deploy infrastructure in rural areas due to business viability issues. He said the government should build infrastructure, such as submarine cables, and then rent these facilities out to telco operators instead.

He stressed the entire country would not be able to optimize the benefits of broadband connectivity unless the government is willing to invest in developing internet infrastructure in “missionary routes”. Globe itself launched early this year a nationwide infrastructure program that would enhance the country's internet experience within homes and across businesses.

The company has already invested $2.2 billion since 2011 to build a modern network and IT infrastructure. For 2016, bulk of its $750 million capital expenditure will be devoted in expanding network capacities with the additional frequencies that it gained access to from the sellout of San Miguel’s telco assets. The company is also aggressively investing in the deployment of a nationwide fiber optic cable system.

In the GCI report, Adopters are rated higher. These are economies with average GDP of US$15,000 and with GCI score ranging between35-55. Countries in this group see the biggestGDP growth from GCI. Their focus is on increasing ICT demand to facilitate industry digitization and high-quality economic growth. Asian countries under the Adopters category include China and Malaysia both with a GCI score of 44 and Thailand with 37.

Meanwhile, Frontrunners are countries with average GDP of US$50,000 and GCI score ranging from 56-85. These nations are mainly developed economies and they continually boost user experience, and use big data analytics and IoT to develop a smarter, more efficient society. United States lead the Frontrunners with a GCI score of 74, followed by Singapore with a GCI score 72 and Sweden at 70.

To improve their GCI scores, all governments should lead by example in digital transformation for enterprises and citizens, and increase spending on ICT infrastructure to benefit the public. Also, countries need to introduce and train a skilled ICT workforce to unleash the full potential of a digital economy and should partner with more stakeholders to lay a solid digital foundation, encourage cross-domain cooperation, and collaborate with the private sector and financial institutions like the World Bank to create an ecosystem for digital transformation. “Starters need to worry about broadening access. Adopters need to raise the quality of that access, and Frontrunners need to increase the business value created by access,” the report said.

According to the GCI report, the global digital economy has emerged as an unstoppable giant that’s growing at 10% or more than triple the rate of overall global economic growth. The worldwide digital economy generated US$24 trillion in e-commerce in 2015 and accounted for 30 percent of all global transactions. Such transactions were on 2.5 billion smart devices spread among the world’s 7.4 billion people.

Globe launched the first online film festival in the Philippines - Globe Independent Film Festival, or GIFF.

Through its film productions arm Globe Studios, Globe's GIFF sets the bar for film festivals by maximizing the online platform to reach a wider audience.

Veering from traditional film fests, and advocating Filipino talent and championing original content,
GIFF adds a whole new dimension to digital entertainment by bringing the film entries online. This way, more people will be able to access and watch on demand, right on their device.

Open to all amateur filmmakers, GIFF will be accepting entries for any of these 5 genres: Narrative, Documentary, Animated, Experimental, Music Video, and Webisode.

Film submissions will be evaluated by an esteemed panel of judges from the entertainment industry namely, Antoinette Jadaone, Bianca Gonzalez,Philbert Dy, and Sid Maderazo.

Dan Horan, Globe Senior Advisor for Consumer Business
Dan Horan, Globe Senior Advisor for Consumer Business said :
“The launch of Globe Studios gave us a whole new way of bringing wonderful entertainment to our customers. With GIFF, our vision for Globe Studios is realized – to be able to advocate local talent and eventually collaborate with them for content. GIFF allows us to fuel creativity among filmmakers and we look forward to the entries and bring these amazing films closer to every Filipino.”
In the course of the film fest, the public will be able to watch the shortlisted films on GlobeStudios.ph, the Globe Studios YouTube channel, at the Globe ICONIC store, or at select cinema screenings.

Winners per category are set to bring home up to P200000.00 and will be announced at GIFF’s culminating event in November. Interested groups can learn more about the complete mechanics by visiting www.GlobeStudios.ph.

As a special showcase, GIFF kicks off the film fest with 5 laudable short films led by 5 esteemed Filipino directors.

Available on GlobeStudios.ph and the Globe YouTube channel, everyone can watch the following titles:

  • How to Find Love directed by Quark Henares
  • An Open Door by Paul Soriano
  • Trapik by Dan Villegas
  • Ang Painting ni Tatay by Sigrid Andrea Bernardo
  • Bestfriend by Bb. Joyce Bernal

In addition to the major film categories, GIFF also launches another program: “The Globe 5-Minute Video Challenge”.

This joint initiative with the Singtel Group and its telco associates comprised of Singtel, Optus, AIS, Airtel, and Telkomsel, the 5-minute video challenge is part of the group’s efforts to drive content innovation across its markets and it will be conducted at two levels – local and regional.

Quark Henares, Paul Soriano and Dan Villegas

Globe invites aspiring or experienced local filmmakers to submit 5-minute entries based on the theme “Connecting Lives”. The entries will be judged on criteria such as originality of content, storytelling and cinematography. The top two video entries from the Philippines will win P350000.00 each and will automatically qualify for the regional level of the competition.
“We are making a big push in digital content as consumers have radically changed the way they consume entertainment. For many of Singtel’s more than 600 million customers, the mobile phone is also the only way for them to access the Internet. A pan-regional competition makes a lot of sense, as the power of content is its ability to transcend geographical and language barriers. Our customers will be able to enjoy access to a rich variety of original content created by the most talented content-makers from the region,” said Mark Chong, CEO, International, Singtel
The grand finals will be held in Bangkok, Thailand on Nov. 21, with cash prizes of $30000.00 and $15000.00 to be awarded to the grand winner and runner-up, respectively. The regional winners will also get the opportunity to promote their videos on each associate’s mobile and video platforms to customers in the Group’s markets across Asia, Africa and Australia.

In line with commitment to provide constant connectivity to customers, Globe 1st telco to provide free Wi-Fi services in LRT stations

Globe Telecom is the country’s first telecommunications company to provide free Wi-Fi services in all 20 LRT stations as part of its commitment to address growing customer demand for constant connectivity. The agreement is expected to benefit around 400,000 passengers daily.

Under an agreement signed by Globe and the Light Rail Manila Corp. (LRMC), the concessionaire of the Light Rail Transit System-Line 1 (LRT1), the telecommunications provider agreed to provide Wi-Fi services that will be accessible to LRT1 passengers and employees, said Joel Agustin, Globe Senior Vice President for Program Governance, Network Technical Group.

According to Agustin, Globe will also provide fiber optic cable system that will extend the length of the entire LRT 1 and cover all LRT stations and LRMC’s depot in Pasay City. In addition, the telco provider will also enhance its wireless infrastructure by deploying cell sites in each of the LRT stations.
“Globe will also deploy the new LTE700/1800/2600 MHz spectrum to provide adequate capacity to handle the massive mobile traffic volume at these stations,” he said.
Globe recently gained access to the 700 MHz band and acquired additional allocation in the 1800 MHz and 2600 MHz frequencies following its recent joint buyout of San Miguel’s telco assets.
“As the purveyor of the Filipino digital lifestyle, we, at Globe, recognize customer demand for constant connectivity even as they are on the go. We are confident that the deployment of free Wi-Fi services in all LRT stations will bring better communication or even improve work productivity for our customers,” Agustin stressed.
He explained that deployment of fiber optic cables and enhancement of the company’s wireless infrastructure along LRT 1 would improve mobile coverage and enhance network capacities. Once completed, this is expected to improve customer experience not only of customers riding LRT 1 but also those plying the Taft Ave. and Rizal Ave route.

In early June, Globe also signed a similar agreement to provide free Wi-Fi connectivity in all 13 MRT stations along EDSA. Globe has set aside for 2016 a capital expenditure of $750 million, bulk of which will be used to boost data capacity and expand network reach.

In line with its vision of ushering in a digital nation, the network build will also increase the capacity of its network for both mobile and wire lines using different technologies including 3G, LTE and Wi-Fi.

Globe keeps growth momentum in 1H; posts double-digit growth in revenues

Globe Telecom sustained its growth momentum in the first half of the year, delivering a double-digit hike in revenues, reaching a total P59.6 billion, up 11% from P53.8 billion a year earlier. Despite heightened competitive intensity, the robust revenue growth was underpinned by the rise in data-related service revenues across mobile, home broadband and corporate data, driven by efforts in providing market-relevant data offers and the sustained investments in the company’s data network.

Globe recorded net income of close to P9.0 billion, up by 3% against the P8.7 billion reported in the same period of 2015. Core net income, which excludes the impact of nonrecurring charges, foreign exchange gains and mark-to-market charges, stood at P8.8 billion, higher by 2% year-on-year. EBITDA stood at P25.6 billion for the first six months of the year, a robust 13% increase from the P22.7 billion reported a year ago. Total operating expenses and subsidy grew by 9% year-on-year to P34.0 billion from P31.1 billion last year, to support the growing customer base and the expansion of the data network. EBITDA margin stood at 43%, slightly higher than last year’s margin of 42% and in line with the full-year guidance of 40%.

“We are proud that the company’s overall results in the first half remained robust amidst the heightened competitive intensity and the unique challenges and opportunities posed by increasing levels of smartphone penetration and mobile postpaid ownership in the market.” Globe President & CEO Ernest L. Cu said. “We believe that with the aid of the additional frequencies that we have recently acquired, Globe Telecom’s leadership as the preferred brand for Filipinos’ digital lifestyle choices will be strengthened moving forward. Our commitment in making continuous investments and the aggressive expansion of our network capacities are all geared towards addressing the public’s clamor for better internet service and creating wonderful experiences for our valued customers and shareholders.” Cu added.

Globe Telecom’s mobile revenues grew by 3% year-on-year, reaching P45.7 billion for the first half of 2016 from the P44.5 billion reported a year ago, driven by strong revenue performances of Globe’s prepaid brands. TM, the company’s mass-market brand, increased revenues by 5% year-on-year while Globe Prepaid revenues posted a solid year-on-year growth of 3%. Complementing the growth of the prepaid segment, Globe Postpaid revenues posted a 2% growth from the same period of 2015.

From a product perspective, the growth in mobile revenues was spurred by the sustained rise in mobile data service revenues, which grew to P17.8 billion in the first half of 2016, 46% higher than the P12.2 billion reported a year ago. The robust revenue growth was driven by the rise in smartphone penetration, on the back of increasing affordability and range of devices, and the popularity of Globe’s data-driven products and applications as more customers shift towards digital lifestyles. The growth in mobile data services offset the declines in mobile voice (-11%) and mobile SMS revenues (-16%), which are consistent with the trends in other telecom companies in the region and worldwide. Mobile data services comprised 39% of total mobile revenues, up from 27% in the first six months of 2015.

The company’s home broadband business likewise sustained its growth trajectory, significantly increasing both in revenues (+49% year-on-year) and subscriber base (+38% year-on-year). Total home broadband service revenues reached P7.0 billion for the six months just ended, with total subscriber base now reaching 1.14 million customers. The growth in revenues was driven by subscriber expansion in both fixed wireless and wired broadband solutions, due to the continued rise in demand for internet and data connectivity and the popularity of entertainment and other content-driven applications, such as HOOQ and NBA League Pass, among others.

Globe Telecom’s corporate data business surged by 55% to P4.9 billion for the first six months of 2016, from the P3.1 billion in the same period a year ago. This was primarily driven by the sustained demand for digital services across Philippine enterprises given the strong take-up of various data connectivity solutions, managed services, mobility solutions and cloud-based services. Traditional fixed line voice revenues likewise posted a 29% increase year-on-year to P1.9 billion as of the end of June 2016 from P1.5 billion a year ago following the growth of bundled home broadband plans.

Respondents of the buy side work at firms that collectively manage an estimated $963 billion in Asia ex-Japan equities.

In addition, Charlton East Coles, an independent market research firm, conferred two citations on Globe Telecom. Globe Telecom also was declared first runner-up in Best in Ethics and Governance Award at the ASEAN Corporate Sustainability Awards 2016, a category that recognizes the unwavering commitment of organizations towards the upholding the highest levels of governance and business ethos over and beyond compliance needs. The recognitions attest to the company’s commitment in upholding good corporate governance that helps drive its business success.

The ASEAN Corporate Sustainability Summit and Awards has been the pre-eminent sustainability forum in the Philippines. Each year, it has been a host to luminaries of all sectors from both Philippines and beyond. This year’s ACSSA focused on the newly-launched Global Goals. Organized by Asia Society for Social Improvement and Sustainable Transformation (ASSIST), the ASEAN Corporate Sustainability Summit and Awards 2016 focused on the agenda of the SDGs as defined by the theme “Empowering Sustainable Convergence”.

In 2015, Globe delivered a record performance, surpassing the company’s previous year’s record performance, posting new highs in service revenues, EBITDA, and earnings. Even in the face of intense industry competition, the company registered broad-based data-driven growth across its key services. Globe solidified its leadership in the digital space by focusing on improving customer experience and by riding with the shift toward greater data consumption across all segments.

It had to be easy-to-use with great interface options as well as payment gateways that can be adapted to the Philippine setting. Among all our options, we found Shopify to be the best choice. The online side of the business has been growing steadily since we started. More and more Filipinos like the convenience of not having to leave their homes to buy things because of the traffic situation in Manila.”
With Shopify, Craft Carrot found a convenient way to reach more clients who live in different provinces around the country. With their online store, they are able to make their products easily available and accessible.

Globe Business pushes for stronger IoT adoption in PH

Co-Presents the 7th annual Asia IoT Business Platform

The Internet of Things (IoT) is touted to become a significant economic driver and frontier in the digital revolution, the full potential of which many have yet to discover. As the world moves towards converging technologies, experts predict that billions of devices will be able to communicate with each other—an ability that has the potential to enhance the quality of living and transform the way people experience technology.

IoT took center stage as key policy makers, government officials, solution providers, and local enterprises gathered for the 7th annual IoT Business Platform where Globe Business, the enterprise information and communications arm of Globe Telecom, top-billed as platinum sponsor. The conference enabled movers and shakers to discuss how IoT can be harnessed to better processes and exchange business insights in the manufacturing, transport, logistics, city planning, healthcare, banking, and finance industries.

Mike Frausing, Globe Senior Advisor for Enterprise and IT-Enabled Service Group, served as keynote speaker in the Asia IoT Business Platform conference

Mike Frausing, Globe Senior Advisor for Enterprise and IT-Enabled Service Group, served as one of the keynote speakers and panel members of the conference. He noted that the Philippine telecommunications industry must address key elements in order to optimally reap the benefits of IoT such as improved coverage, connectivity, latency, capacity, big data, analytics, and security as well as more affordable devices.
“To make IoT a success we need to have a robust wireless coverage and connectivity, and a complying performance. This has to be supplemented by affordable devices that users can utilize either for business or for networking. These fundamentals are the fields that we at Globe have made available, and we keep improving and expanding on these areas to ensure that consumers and businesses from all around the country will benefit and be covered,” said Frausing.
IoT is defined as a worldwide network of “things” that include identifiable devices, appliances, equipment, machinery of all forms and sizes with the intelligence to seamlessly connect, communicate and control or manage each other to perform a set of tasks with minimum intervention. The goal of IoT is to enable things to be connected anytime, anyplace and with anything or anyone. IoT is expected to help companies increase productivity, cut costs, offer new products and services, and bolster efficiency of business critical operations.

Aligned with this goal, Globe Business recently announced a three-year agreement with Astrata, a global organization that designs and develops advanced location-based IT services and solutions. Globe Business and Astrata take advantage of IoT to further improve the existing Globe Fleet Management Solution which allows companies to keep track of their moving assets via Global Positioning System (GPS) devices. Both Globe Business and Astrata are also set to develop more solutions to support Fixed Asset Management, Security Services and other platforms.

Globe also clears the way for the adoption of IoT in the country through investment of over $2.2 billion in network and IT infrastructure to enhance capacities of its data network and augment legacy-related investments. The bulk of its $750 million capex this year is allotted to the deployment of fiber optic cables in 20,000 barangays or about two million homes nationwide. This allows higher download and upload speeds, lower latency, and faster Internet browsing and streaming of high-definition multimedia content for higher bandwidth and better speeds for enterprises and subscribers.

Globe urges Akamai to include PH mobile internet performance in report

Globe Telecom calls on Akamai to include the mobile internet results for the Philippines in its quarterly State of the Internet (SOI) report in reaction to the 1st Quarter results released recently where the country's internet performance was once again benchmarked using fixed broadband internet.

Yoly Crisanto, Globe SVP for Corporate Communications said that similar to other countries, Akamai should include the PH in its report on mobile internet to provide the public with a complete picture on the country’s true state of internet speed. “By using the average speed for fixed broadband to represent the internet speed for the whole country is erroneous. It is not reflective of the true state of internet considering that majority of Filipinos are using mobile data to access the internet. In comparison with other countries, this will again put the Philippines in bad light and will be used as reference in many studies and reports,” Crisanto said.

In the latest SOI report of Akamai, the average internet speed in the Philippines for fixed broadband increased by 24% from 2.8Mbps in Q1 of 2015 to 3.5Mbps in Q1 of 2016. The peak speed also increased by 47% year on year from 20.3Mbps in Q1 2015 to 29.9Mbps this quarter. Due to a history of underinvestment in the area of fixed broadband, the telco industry is trying to catch up by addressing the huge infrastructure gaps in contrast with its Asian neighbors.

Crisanto added that the Akamai report is being used as reference by government agencies, media and special interest groups in creating their position on issues that affect the industry. “Akamai must now realize the importance of their SOI report so they should prioritize the inclusion of the Philippines' mobile internet in the next report,” Crisanto stressed.

Globe has been reaching out to various sectors to educate the public on the challenges facing the industry with regard to internet speed and costs. Generally, industry investments were used to modernize and improve mobile networks to make mobile internet more pervasive in a shorter period of time. The increasing adoption of smartphones in the country is a testament that the industry strategy putting money in mobile business is sound. However, the new trends on video streaming and digital entertainment is putting pressure on home connectivity where the country is deeply challenged.

Globe is now refocusing its efforts to upgrade its fixed broadband internet backbone nationwide. Addressing the need to enhance fixed broadband is part of the company's commitment to enhance network coverage for a wider reach and faster data experience for Filipinos nationwide. Earlier this year, the company announced its plan to create an internet super highway by deploying fiber optics in 20,000 barangays all over the country by 2020 to provide ultra-fast internet access to about 2 million homes nationwide.
