Gloc-9 Unveils Heart-Wrenching Tale of Cherished Memories in New Single “Ala”

The ever-prolific songwriter Gloc-9 has a new song out and it’s called “Ala.” The fresh single is something deeply emotional and it masterfully weaves together themes of love, family, and the fragility of memory.

The title "Ala" is a playful yet effective wordplay of the Filipino word "alaala," meaning memories, which serves as the heart of this storytelling narrative.

In "Ala," Gloc-9 takes listeners on a journey through the life of a man who reflects on the cherished memories of his love story, from meeting his partner, building a family, to growing old together. The song begins with a celebration of life’s milestones, capturing the joy of marriage and the blessing of children. As the years pass, the couple's bond remains strong, even as their children move away, leaving them with only each other.

The narrative takes a heart-wrenching turn as the man begins to experience symptoms of Alzheimer's disease, a condition that slowly erodes his memories. Gloc-9's lyrics vividly depict the fear and confusion that come with the diagnosis, as well as the heartbreak of forgetting the very people and moments that once defined his life. The verses are filled with raw emotion, portraying the man's struggle to hold onto the memories that are slipping away, and the pain of his family as they watch him fade.

The rap song effectively depicts the inevitability of time and the importance of treasuring every moment with loved ones. The track serves as a reminder of the beauty and sorrow that memories hold, making "Ala" a standout piece in Gloc-9's growing discography.

The song is part of the latest New Music Friday Philippines and Bago sa Kalye playlists on Spotify.

LYRICS

Ala by Gloc-9

Hook:

I

Nag kakilala tayo
Sinabi sa sarili na malayo
Man ay palagi kong ilalapit sayo

At kinasal nga tayo
Karen at Joselito Susan Leslie at Levan walang di matatandaan

habang dumadaan
Panahong na aking binabalikan
mga alalala

II

Nung tumanda na tayo
Lahat sila ay nandun sa malayo
Ang meron lamang tayo ay isat isa
Ramdam ko na
Tila may di tama sa daan

Rap

Nahilo ako at tila tutumba

alzheimer's ano yun kainan?
Bakit ka naka yakap sakin umiiyak ka pa
Bitawan mo ako kilala ba kita?

Tay ako po si rojelio
Panganay nyong anak
Criselda pacho lito
Na iyak lang ng iyak
Karen at joselito Susan Leslie Levan
Sanay iyong matandaan..

habang dumadaan
Panahong na aking binabalikan
mga alalala

Step into Dua Lipa’s Radical Optimism Experience in Glorietta!

Award-winning global popstar Dua Lipa has finally released her third album Radical Optimism, and it’s been getting critical acclaim ever since. Now, Filipino fans can enjoy the album on a whole new level this coming weekend with an interactive Radical Optimism Pop-Up happening at the Glorietta Activity Center.

A Dance-inducing Masterpiece

Radical Optimism makes it known early on just what type of album it is with the addicting “End Of An Era,” high-energy “Training Season,” and euphoric, club-ready “Houdini.” With this album, fans get eleven songs that can bring out anyone’s urge to groove and get lost in the music.

Dua herself describes Radical Optimism as “psychedelic pop,” noting that “there are musical breaks and a mix of different sounds, and when you listen to it with your eyes closed, it opens up a very visual world.”

The album was inspired by Dua’s own self-discovery and speaks to the pure joy and happiness of having clarity in situations that once seemed impossible to face. It’s a musical representation of how hard goodbyes and vulnerable beginnings can become milestones once you choose to see the brighter side of things. “It struck me – the idea of going through chaos gracefully and feeling like you can weather any storm,” she shared.

Rolling Stone has called this album “pop bliss,” while highlighting how it’s “uniquely and

utterly Dua Lipa: confident dance pop full of witty Instagram-caption-ready one-liners.”

Dua also recently returned to Saturday Night Live, where she was both the host and the musical guest for the night. She gave an electrifying version of “Illusion,” followed by a passionate performance of “Happy For You.”

An Experiential Pop-Up

Can’t get enough of the album? Experience it like never before with this week’s Radical Optimism event. This unique and immersive pop-up is set to bring all of Dua’s songs to life – to the point where dancing is the only option! Fans can go and see it for themselves when they visit the Glorietta Activity Center from May 17 to 19, anytime between 10 AM and 9 PM. They’ll be treated to themed photobooths, personalized memorabilia, and more!

Exciting things are happening for Dua, as she recently announced the first run of tour dates in support of Radical Optimism with shows in Berlin, Pula, and Nimes taking place in June. In addition, Dua will make her Pyramid Stage debut as the Friday night headliner at this year’s Glastonbury Festival on June 28th.

This pop powerhouse shows no signs of slowing down, and everyone’s excited to see even more performances and visuals for her new songs in the coming weeks.

Baguio-based indie-alternative band, Dilaw, has set the 2023 Spotify record for the Philippines’ most streamed local song in 24 hours. The group’s melodic single “Uhaw (Tayong Lahat)” even surpassed BLACKPINK’s “Shut Down” and Joji’s “Glimpse of Us” number of streams within a day in the Philippines, gaining global traction in Indonesia, United States and Australia.

The six-piece band from the north composed of the core duo of vocalist and lyricist Dilaw Obrero and guitarist Vie Viloria, drummer Tobi Samson, bassist Wayne Dela Rosa, guitarist Leon Altomonte and keyboardist En Altomonte is thrilled to reach a significant achievement together.

“As musicians, all we wanted is for people to listen and relate to our music and our journey, and this record-breaking achievement is simply amazing. We are grateful to Spotify, an audio platform that enables the global discovery of our band and the repertoire of our work. This continues to motivate us to work on our craft and explore new musical possibilities,” shared Dilaw.

“Celebrating local music and building a deeper connection between artists and fans have been a top priority for us. It is incredibly encouraging to see Filipino artists continuing to rise in the local charts and break more boundaries than ever before,” said Kossy Ng, Head of Music of Spotify Asia.

Parokya Ni Edgar’s “Your Song” Surpasses 100 Million Streams On Spotify!

It seems a lot of listeners find themselves coming back to Parokya Ni Edgar’s gem of a track “Your Song” because right now, it just surpassed 100 million streams on Spotify and still continues to rack up more streams.

The song, which was off the band’s 2003 record Bigotilyo is PNE’s first song to ever hit the said Spotify milestone. Time and time again, the band has been very thankful for all the love this simple love song of theirs has been getting over the years.

What’s also surprising is the fact that “Your Song” was never released as an official single by the band during their Bigotilyo era. The song, clocking in at less than three minutes and was written and sung by guitarist Gab Chee Kee organically rose to popularity during the mid-2000s. Since the song gained massive mainstream popularity, Parokya Ni Edgar decided to include “Your Song” on their Inuman Sessions Vol. 2 setlist back in 2012. (WATCH HERE)

Likewise, Asia’s Limitless Star Julie Anne Jose was able to do a rendition of “Your Song” as it became included on her 2018 album Breakthrough. Her own version now has over 50.5 million streams on Spotify and counting. (WATCH OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO HERE)

Julie Anne’s Wish Bus performance of “Your Song” on the other hand has over 40.1 million views as of this writing on YouTube.

DOT Launches “Sounds More Fun in the Philippines” Playlist on Spotify

The Department of Tourism (DOT)
presents the “Sounds More Fun in the Philippines” Playlist, a compilation of specially selected Filipino music that will welcome listeners back to the Philippine destinations they love, and let them relive those epic travel memories.

The initial playlists will be available on the digital music streaming app Spotify. The first 10 playlists to be launched are Manila Night Lights, Boracay Beach Bar, Onshore in La Union, Cordillera Calm, The Pan-Philippine Highway Road Trip, Marilaque Bike Trail Mix, Balikbayan Juke Box, Counting Clouds in Camiguin, Wedding Vows in Tagaytay and Deep Dive in Palawan.

The chosen songs aim to set the soundtrack of one’s stories—like the Cordillera Clam playlist that provides laidback OPM tunes to warm the bones like a strong cup of Cordillera coffee; or the Boracay Beach Bar playlist that surrounds one with beach vibes perfect for grooving; or the Manila Night Lights that brings listeners back to the eras of disco, dance-rock, and neo soul, reliving those dazzling nights when the city truly comes alive.

“These tunes will allow listeners to evoke the getaways, secret spots, and homes away from home that every traveler can find somewhere across the 7,641 islands of the Philippines.”, said Tourism Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat.

The playlists are attuned for every kind of listener—the listed songs can be played loud to get one going before that early morning bike trail, or to keep them company on an epic road trip; or these can be played softly in the background as one savors the bliss that follows a good surf, or daydreams while lounging and gazing at the sea on a white sand beach.

Through this, the DOT intends to provide the feeling that, wherever you are, the fun is never far away.

To create the playlists, the DOT enlisted the help of Filipino music obsessives. These include legendary rock DJ and Sandwich bassist Myrene Academia, podcast personality Ryan Joseph, music pundit Jocelyn Blwg, Matt San Pedro of Manila Community Radio and Transit Records, musicologist Patricia Brillante-Silvestre, and music producer Abdel Aziz.

The songs and artists featured in these playlists are Pinoys as well as international artists and bands with Filipino roots.

Follow DOT’s official Spotify account, Tourism Philippines, and explore the archipelago’s diverse soundscapes and get to know the artists who made the music that has defined generations and those that are charting its future course.

#SoundsMoreFunInThePhilippines is a celebration of why—and where—music sounds more fun in the Philippines.

Ben&Ben is PH’s most-streamed OPM Artist of 2021 according to Spotify Wrapped

On top of the streaming recognition, the band also reaped major honors at the 34th Awit Awards and landed top-tier collaborations with National Geographic and Jollibee

Ben&Ben is ending the year right with record-breaking achievements on major fronts: from dominating streaming platforms in the Philippines to landing top-tier multimedia collaborations, from sweeping major categories in every important award show to staging their game-changing headline concert.

For a second consecutive year, the nine-piece collective was named the Philippines’ most-streamed OPM Artist and Group of 2021—thanks to the success of their sophomore album, Pebble House Vol. 1: Kuwaderno. According to Spotify Wrapped, the platform’s annual rundown of 2021’s biggest hits, Ben&Ben has amassed nearly 300 million streams in 170 countries, setting a new record for the folk-pop outfit. The Lunod hitmakers also showed impressive performance in the playlisting category as their songs ended up in 5,809,115 major and curated playlists on the digital platform.

On top of the streaming recognition, the acclaimed band recently bagged the top honors at the 34th Awit Awards—the country’s version of the Grammys. Ben&Ben earned the recognition on four major categories, including the Most Streamed Artist, Record of the Year and Best Inspirational Recording for their chart-topping hit “Di Ka Sayang,” as well as Best Ballad Recording for “Sa Susunod na Habang Buhay.”

Ben&Ben also made headlines for their advocacy work a few days ago, particularly for lending their song “Kayumanggi” on the music video campaign that supports the coastal communities in La Union. The project, which was spearheaded by Emerging Islands, a coastal-based arts organization and National Geographic, showcased the cultural richness and scenic beauty of Bangar and Bauang, San Juan, as well as its hard-working people.

To cap off a successful year, their smash single “Pasalubong,” a collaboration with Moira, was used as the main song for the John Lloyd Cruz-Bea Alonzo reunion film, One True Pair, which streamed on Jollibee’s official YouTube last December 1, 2021.

In an official statement, Ben&Ben expressed that there have been a lot of trade-offs in their personal and collective lives in the past year, but they’re grateful for the success and support of their fandom, Liwanag in every project that they’re part. “With everything happening and all the blessings coming our way, it’s a whole lot to be grateful for indeed,” the band shares. “The hard work is worth it in that sense for sure, but we do go through our fair share of personal struggles as well, especially with this year and even the past year being two of the absolute most challenging years so far, not just for us but for so many in the world too. We want to thank our listeners especially though, because they really were the ones that give us that daily reminder that it is all worth it.”

This weekend, the multi-awarded group is set to perform at the Kuwaderno: A Ben&Ben Online Concert, their biggest headline show to date. Shot live at the Araneta Coliseum, the digital concert is set to redefine the virtual concert-going experience with a fusion of creative disciplines, from theatre to dance, orchestra to technology. The band will also be playing songs off their recently released sophomore album, Pebble House Vol. 1: Kuwaderno, as well as some crowd favorites and hits. Tickets to the show are still available via ktx.ph.
