McJim holds first Get Reel mobile shorts film fest

WORLD-CLASS leather brand McJim Classic Leather invites filmmakers— students, amateurs, and professionals—to submit entries to the first-ever Get Reel Mobile Shorts Film Festival 2019, a competition that celebrates the values, aspirations, and vision of the modern Filipino gentleman. 

“Get Reel Mobile Shorts Film Festival 2019 aims to inspire filmmakers to create moving, relatable, and distinctly Filipino narratives that will be screened online,” says festival director and award-winning filmmaker Chris Cahilig. 

In the past two years, McJim has collaborated with Cahilig in creating memorable, viral, and critically acclaimed short films that won the hearts of millions of netizens across the globe. Three of the short films titled “Pitaka,” “Bag,” and “Sinturon” have competed in over 60 prestigious international film festivals, winning four awards so far, including the Best Digital Ad (Branded) in the 2018 Catholic Mass Media Awards (CMMA). 

This time, McJim is engaging more filmmakers in the creative process. 

Eligible entries will have the chance to win a total of P190,000 worth of cash prizes in eight different categories, including The McJim Prize for the festival’s best short film. 

The eight categories are: The McJim Prize for Best Short Film (P50,000); Get Reel Viral Film Award (P25,000); Best Comedy Short Film (P25,000); Best Action, Thriller, or Horror Short Film (P25,000); Best Drama Short Film (P25,000); Best Inspirational Story (P10,000); Best in Cinematography (P10,000); Best Actor (P10,000); and Best Actress (P10,000). 

The festival is open to all Filipino filmmakers. All entries must be filmed using a mobile device and recorded, submitted, and edited in not less than 720HD format, although using 1080 HD format is highly recommended. The minimum length must be two (2) minutes and the maximum length must be ten (10) minutes, including opening and closing credits. 

Get Reel accepts films of all genres. However, they must use any McJim Classic Leather products (bags, belts, and wallets) as an organic part of the narratives. Submission must be done via email at mcjimtv@gmail.com. 

A panel of judges will determine the finalists and winners through a deliberation. The results are final and irrevocable. No film entry shall be an imitation or plagiarized version of any copyrighted work. Get Reel Mobile Shorts Film Festival and its organizers will not be responsible for any copyright infringement committed by the participants. 

The deadline for submission is on June 30. The finalists will be announced on July 15, and the winners will be awarded on August 30. 

Participating filmmakers must be willing to have their works posted on various social media accounts of McJim Classic Leather and its agency, Insight 360 Consultancy Services, Inc.. 

Globe pioneers the first online film festival in the Philippines - Globe Independent Film Festival #GIFF

Globe launched the first online film festival in the Philippines - Globe Independent Film Festival, or GIFF.

Through its film productions arm Globe Studios, Globe's GIFF sets the bar for film festivals by maximizing the online platform to reach a wider audience.

Veering from traditional film fests, and advocating Filipino talent and championing original content, 

GIFF adds a whole new dimension to digital entertainment by bringing the film entries online. This way, more people will be able to access and watch on demand, right on their device.

Open to all amateur filmmakers, GIFF will be accepting entries for any of these 5 genres: Narrative, Documentary, Animated, Experimental, Music Video, and Webisode. 

Film submissions will be evaluated by an esteemed panel of judges from the entertainment industry namely, Antoinette Jadaone, Bianca Gonzalez,Philbert Dy, and Sid Maderazo.

In addition to the major film categories, GIFF also launches another program: “The Globe 5-Minute Video Challenge”. 

This joint initiative with the Singtel Group and its telco associates comprised of Singtel, Optus, AIS, Airtel, and Telkomsel, the 5-minute video challenge is part of the group’s efforts to drive content innovation across its markets and it will be conducted at two levels – local and regional.

Globe invites aspiring or experienced local filmmakers to submit 5-minute entries based on the theme “Connecting Lives”. The entries will be judged on criteria such as originality of content, storytelling and cinematography. The top two video entries from the Philippines will win P350000.00 each and will automatically qualify for the regional level of the competition. 

“We are making a big push in digital content as consumers have radically changed the way they consume entertainment. For many of Singtel’s more than 600 million customers, the mobile phone is also the only way for them to access the Internet. A pan-regional competition makes a lot of sense, as the power of content is its ability to transcend geographical and language barriers. The grand finals will be held in Bangkok, Thailand on Nov. 21, with cash prizes of $30000.00 and $15000.00 to be awarded to the grand winner and runner-up, respectively. The regional winners will also get the opportunity to promote their videos on each associate’s mobile and video platforms to customers in the Group’s markets across Asia, Africa and Australia.

Short Film Festival propels students to great achievements

True to its commitment of being the steward of young film-makers towards success in the local motion picture industry, Black Barong Film Festival (BBFF) showcased the best short films at The BBFF: Invitationals 2016.

In partnership with SineReel X slated last April 20, 21 and 22 at the Thomas Aquinas Research Center Auditorium of the University of Santo Tomas (UST), Manila, the event marked the festival’s first extended run since its inception in 2009.

“We received an overwhelming response from students in different colleges and universities, and because there were many excellent entries, this year’s three-day festival aimed to provide the avenue for young talents to celebrate their achievements and compel them towards future excellence,” said Executive Director Nico Hernandez.

More than creating a platform to exhibit student films, Hernandez added that BBFF believes that peer recognition is essential for the youth to gain confidence in their chosen craft. 

With a mission to support, promote and fuel the passion of the new breed of film-makers, the festival premiered works by students of San Sebastian College Recoletos-Manila, University of the East (UE), Far Eastern University (FEU) and the University of Santo Tomas (UST). 

“We started with less than 10 entries, and we’ve grown to about 60 short films on average each year. The selection of finalists is a critical process. We invited the schools in the University Belt which were able to produce excellent and winning films in the past.”

Sharing the vision of producing and presenting top quality Filipino movies, ABS-CBN Star Cinema rallied their industry veterans to take part as the festival’s 2016 judging panel. Esteemed jurors included Star Cinema’s Creative Manager John Paul Abellera, Head of Production Marizel Samson Martinez and Creative Supervisor and Screenwriter Roumella Nina Monge, internationally acclaimed writer-director Antoinette Jadaone, and award winning cinematographer for film and television Herman Claravall.

“To encourage the students to pursue a career in film making, this time around, the winners will have intership opportunities with Star Cinema. We are happy and grateful for this partnership because with their support, they will also hone and refine the skills of these fresh talents,” Hernandez stated.

Among the 41 finalists featured, the short films produced by FEU garnered the most awards.

Top rank was given to Keep Right, collecting awards for Best Picture, Best Screenplay, Best Production Design and Best Musical Score. The film also earned Best Direction for neophyte director Yesh Burce, and Best Actress for Divine Aucina. The Special Jury Prize, considered as the closest contender for Best Picture, was awarded to the short film Pitik-Bulag. 

Other films of note are Kalabit for Best Sound Editing, Dulog for Best Trailer, and Buffering - with a moving performance by Paulo Alinario, received the Best Actor Award. Excellence in visual execution was given to UST’s Pag-Uwi, which collected Best Cinematography and Best Editting.

Inspiring the creativity of the aspiring youth, winners at The BBFF: Invitationals 2016 received a PHP 50,000.00 film grant from Open Reel Film Gears and, a chance at valuable mentorships and learning from the best professional film-makers in the country. 

“From this point on, we not only recognize the best short films, we also take part in shaping the future of these students. It is our genuine honor to recognize the achievements of the students and we’re very excited for a bigger and better Black Barong next year. ”

MYNP Top 5 Finalists of SineNanay Film Festival announced

MAKE Your Nanay Proud (MYNP) Foundation has unveiled this year's first SineNanay Film Festival.

According to Ms. Bemz Benedito, Managing Director of MYNP, the aim of the film festival is to recognize the greatest woman in our life, our nanay. "We tell the students to explore, provoke interpret and capture images of how they express their love for their nanays.”

The contest is open to college students (in group or individuals) from La Consolacion College Manila (LCCM) and Philippine Women’s University (PWU) using only a camera phone.

The selection committee was composed of members of the academe and MYNP officers. From 12 semi-finalists, the committee came up with five final entries from LCCM and PWU.

The entries include: Ma. Chrisma Alberto’s “NaTay” which is about a grandfather who takes care of his grandchild after her mother died while giving birth; the film “Istorya ng Pagmamahal at Sakripisyo” by Ella May Arevalo, She Villate and Camille Castañas revolves around the story of a sick mother who shows her undying love for her son up to her last breath; Ma. Ana Elaiza Lardizabal’s “Lipstick” showcases a different look at being a mother; a mother’s love knows no boundaries that not even an iron wall can stop her from fulfilling her obligations to her children in the film “Rehas” by Mary Joy Bonapos and Cathrene Anne Joseph while their other entry, “Mama’s Girl”, tackles the unconditional love and devotion of a mother for her daughter.

The finalists were recently invited to attend an orientation program conducted by Gawad CCP awardee Direk Nick Olanka and Mr. Gorio Vicuña, an expert in high-end CG animation, live action production, and visual effects for film and television.

The deliberation of winners will be held on the 3rd week of September. 

Indie and theater actor Arnold Reyes is the Festival Director of SineNanay.

Benedito shares that the film festival is a tribute to all mothers and a celebration of a child’s love for his/her mother.
