Google Doodles Archaeologist Howard Carter's 138th Birthday

Today's Google doodle pays homage to an English archaeologist and Egyptologist Howard Carter, who is noted as a discoverer of the tomb of Tutankhamun in 1922.

Howard's important contribution to his field of archaeology was the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun, who was an Egyptian pharaoh of the 18th dynasty.

With a view to mark the 138th birth anniversary of Howard Carter, Google today replaced its usual Google logo with a doodle that includes a wide array of Egyptian treasures that cover the term "Google" and make it barely visible.

Mr. Universe 1952 Turns 100, Manohar Aich Credits Healthy Lifestyle and Happiness

Aich won the Mr. Universe international bodybuilding championship in 1952. He celebrated his 100th birthday on Sunday surrounded by children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren in Kolkata, an eastern city in India. Standing just 4 feet, 11 inches tall, Aich earned the nickname "Pocket Hercules," the Associated Press said in a report.

His lifestyle and a simple diet of milk, fruits and vegetables along with rice, lentils and fish have kept him healthy.  The bodybuilding trainer told the AP that he doesn't drink or smoke, and centenarian Manohar Aich credits his longevity to a healthy lifestyle in which he minimizes stress and focuses on happiness.

Aich turned to bodybuilding while he was imprisoned in the 1940s for opposing Britain's continued colonial rule of India. When he was released, he went on to compete as a bodybuilder, earning success in international competition that culminated with his taking the Mr. Universe title. On his return to India, he trained future bodybuilding champions. Aich traveled, competed and made a living. He has led a fulfilled life, while his wife took care of their children.
Aich regrets never having met his fellow Mr. Universe, former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. He's seen many of the Governator's films. "I like the incredible stunts he does in the movies," Aich told the AP.
There is not much money in bodybuilding. "I didn't become rich, but there is respect. And for that, I wouldn't mind being a bodybuilder in my next life as well," he told the Indian Express newspaper.

Veteran Filipino photographer George Tapan wins top place in the prestigious National Geographic Photo Contest 2011 Places Category for his composition, Into the Green Zone. The contest was judged by National Geographic magazine photographers Tim Laman, Amy Toensing, and Peter Essick.

Tapan’s photograph “Into the Green Zone”with a rainbow after a rainstorm taken in the island of Onuk in Balabac, Palawan. It showcases the real beauty of the Philippines through the beauty of our beaches in Palawan.
The photo has all the right elements. Tim Laman says Tapan “showed a perfect sense of timing and composition in the way he captured the two small human subjects in this beautiful scene, and that really made the shot.” Toensing notes that the photo “compellingly shows a sense of place” while Essick says “the photographer has documented a sense of style and flair."

The National Geographic Photo Contest is the most prestigious annual International Photo Contest capturing the beauty of the world through captivating imagery.  There were 20,000 photographs submitted by the best photographers in 130 countries for three categories: people, places, and nature. Symphony of Lights and Sounds show at the Ayala Triangle Gardens

Ayala Triangle Lights and Sounds Show (Personal Video,
I uploaded at my Youtube Account)

The Symphony of Lights and Sounds  at the Ayala Triangle Gardens have watched and enjoyed by large crowd of people.

Symphony of Lights and Sounds show everyday, every hour from 6 pm to 9 pm,  from November 16 to December 30 at the Ayala Triangle Gardens, Makati City. And lately, we were there the night of Christmas Day,  and they present it every 30 minutes. We really enjoyed and  dance with the stars, lights and many people.

This is the Ayala Land's 3rd year in the lights and sounds show, now called Spectacular Spectrum. Here, they introduced for the first time inflatable stars and gobo lights along with the usual energy-saving LED string lights, meteor lights, laser lights and fog machines that gave the audience that distinct magical Christmas experience.

December 30 and 31, 2011 Are Non-Working Holidays

President Benigno Aquino III declares both December 30 and 31, 2011 as non-working holidays.

December 30 is a national holiday, which means that all employees are entitled to receive their normal daily salary even if they choose not to work on the said date. Those who will report for work on December 30 should receive double their regular pay for every hour of work. This is true for both regular (or tenured and permanent) and non-regular (casual, non-permanent, contractual) employees. Once more, here are the pay rules specified by the Department of Labor and Employment:

If it is an employee’s regular workday
a. If unworked – 100%
b. If worked  -  1st 8 hours – 200% (double pay!)
Excess of 8 hours – plus 30% of hourly rate on said day

If it is an employee’s rest day
a. If unworked – 100%
b. If worked
1st 8 hours – plus 30% of 200% of regular rate plus 30% (for the overtime)

Rizal day falls on a Friday, which in effect gives Filipino workers one last long weekend before 2011 ends.  This should be stressed: Malacanang has not stated yet whether December 24, a Saturday, December 26, a Monday, and January 2, a Monday, would be declared as special non-working days. Nevertheless, some companies can unilaterally declare these dates as no-work days, so better check this with your respective superiors this early so you can plan ahead. Also, don’t be absent on the work day immediately preceding a holiday (regardless if it’s a national holiday or just a special non-working one) since doing so will automatically disqualify you from getting any holiday premium, as per DOLE rules.

December 31, 2011 was also declared as special non-working holiday. The purpose of which is to give time for Filipinos to prepare for the festivities of New Year's Eve.

All those who will be required to work on these holidays shall receive additional compensation according to existing Philippines Labor rules.

The Office of the President has released this list of holidays in the country for 2011 thru Proclamation No. 84
