Roberto S. Bonifacio’s “My World, My Emotions”

Welcome to Roberto S. Bonifacio’s “My World, My Emotions”
By Cid Reyes

A first solo exhibition is always a momentous occasion for an artist. That is a truism as true as the statement that “the first time is always the most memorable.” A solo show is an artist’s formal bow to the art community. An artistic debut, it is an official entry into the exciting and competitive art scene, worthy to be listed in the historical registry of contemporary Philippine art. To be sure, an artist may have participated in several group shows, but such does not have the same impact on the public consciousness as a one-man exhibition, which signals a variety of messages: the artist’s commitment to his art, his readiness and courage to face criticism, and of course, to receive a deserved applause and acclamation. For once an artist’s works are hung for public viewing, he is literally on his own.

Young and eager, driven and determined, the 21 year-old Roberto S. Bonifacio is all set and raring to launch his initial solo show. The venue could not have been more apt: the Renaissance Art Gallery. A rebirth, albeit of the aesthetic kind, is exactly what Bonifacio has experienced with his discovery of a life’s passion. Despite a diagnosis of autism, or precisely, providentially, because of it, the artist in him has victoriously emerged, even as he had immersed himself since childhood in the wondrous world of art. With the full support of his parents and siblings, Bonifacio is now ready to take center stage.

The title which Bonifacio has bestowed on his show is heartfelt and personal: “My World, My Emotions.” A prolific artist, whose enthusiasm for artmaking seems unbounded, he is displaying over fifty works that are the rich evocations of his visions and emotions. A combined spirit of playfulness and seriousness brought these works into fruition, engaging him to share with his audience the innermost recesses of his mind.

The harvest of works is impressive, ranging across themes and formats as varied as portraits, still lifes, landscapes, flowers, nudes, animals, religious subjects, Madonna and Child, surrealist fantasy, Pinoy Pop narratives and Pop Americana, and more predominantly, famous landmark sights in the U.S., Asia, and Europe.

Ultimately, what is touching and felicitous about these works is the overflow of memories that impelled them to come to artistic life. They are visual reveries on canvas, and whether the subjects of the portraits are still among the living or the departed, Bonifacio has rendered to them a worthy homage. “My Beloved Mother” is a sweet valentine replete with hearts, flowers and gifts. A smiling “Portrait of my Father” conveys at once amiability and inner strength. Other portraits of grandparents, friends, teachers, and relatives brim with joy, with no diminution of affection, as Bonifacio has interiorized his feelings for his subjects.

Certain to leave a smile on the audience are his portraits of two beloved religious leaders, Pope Francis and Luis Cardinal Tagle, themselves aglow with their own robust smiles. With their images captured on canvas, they seem to reside in emotional areas of the senses, other than the eyes.

Bonifacio’s still lifes are gustatory delights (cupcakes, pies, pizza and pasta, pastries, fruits and wine, tea and coffee) or common objects (stuffed toys, barbells, running shoes). The artist deploys multiple figures within the strict confines of the canvas, in works such as “Seven Guardian Fairies” perched on the branches of a tree, “Band of Brothers”, “Four Prettiest Ladies from Kalayaan”, “Anime Magical Girls”, “Four Boys Crossing the Zigzag”, which brings to mind the Beatles, barefooted, crossing Abbey Road, and “Three Nude Girls at the Waterfalls During Winter Dusk.” Bonifacio revels in repetition, in serial imagery that intensifies the human presence.

Pop Americana, surely an imprint of the artist’s many travels to the U.S., is another abiding memory, both as holiday and personal history, and shows Bonifacio’s grasp of the American social scene, as depicted in “Cowboy and nagtive American” and “Wahine at San Juan Beach.” On the other hand, Pinoy Pop (or what some derisively label as “baduy”) is markedly visible in “Videoke Queen”, displaying a heavily tattoo’d arm while lustily singing, most likely, Abba’s “Dancing Queen.” Irreverent as it may be, some quarters regard the twin images of the Jesus and Mama Mary, etched on ceramic tiles and plastered often on high-end residential gates, as Pinoy Pop. Such did not escape Bonifacio’s astute, observant eyes. A single surreal touch is gleaned in “Look Out Below! Be Safe from the Giantess”, as a roped mountaineer finds himself descending not from the boulders of the Grand Canyon, but from a humongous profiled nose.

The greater number of works, however, are famous touristic landmarks, for which it is deemed wisely to remember the remark: “A man travels the world over in search of what he needs and returns home to find it” (George A. Moore). In his own country, Bonifacio had once set forth on a journey to the Ilocos, and from that experience, produced a cache of works that depicted Vigan’s century old houses and cobble-stoned streets, the deep-purpled dragon fruit, the earthen pottery, and the Ilocano’s version of empanada. From travels abroad, he created a veritable visual diary: New York and the Statue of Liberty, Paris and the Eiffel Tower, Pisa and the Leaning Tower, Bangkok’s Buddhist temples swathed in gold, Cambodia and its ancient Angkor Wat, Moscow and its onion-domed cathedrals and Russian dolls. Corollary to the theme of travel is a fetching self-portrait of Bonifacio, viewed from the back of a bench where the artist is seated, a luggage by his feet. The title is obvious enough: “Eager to Go Home.”

Thence did Roberto S. Bonifacio pack up and go home, assured with a wealth of memories, stuffed in his heart and mind. He knew even then that he was in possession of precious images which would constitute his authentic world and his shared emotions, which he was determined to render with fidelity on the many canvases that awaited him, indeed for that fast approaching first solo exhibition.

And sends those who hear
To bring the message to everyone
In a voice loud and clear

Let us tell the world of His love
The greatest love the world has known
Search the world for those who have walked
Astray and lead them home
Fill the world's darkest corners
With His light from up above
Walk every step, Every mile, Every road
And tell the world, Tell the world of His love

(Tell the world of His love)
(Tell the world of His love)

Our Lord our savior our king
Emmanuelle prince of peace
Begotten of the Father's love
Born to set us free
Let heaven and earth sing His praises
His righteousness proclaim
Let every heart rejoice in His love
And magnify His name

Let us tell the world of His love
The greatest love the world has known
Search the world for those who have walked
Astray and lead them home
Fill the world's darkest corners
With His light from up above
Walk every step, Every mile, Every road
And tell the world, Tell the world of His love

(Tell the world of His love)

Let us tell the world of His love
The greatest love the world has known
Search the world for those who have walked

“10 Kumainments” for Pinoys’ healthy lifestyle

The National Nutrition Council  launches the “10 Kumainments”, a campaign to promote the Nutritional Guidelines for Filipinos at the “3rd National Conference of Nutrition Action Officers" held at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City on October 23, 2014.

Filipinos from every walk of life can find ways to get healthy and be nutritionally well by following very simple guidelines drawn up by the National Nutrition Council (NNC) of the Department of Health (DOH).

The 10 Kumainments are the popularized versions of the Nutritional Guidelines for Filipinos (NGF) approved by the NNC Governing Board to promote a healthy lifestyle among Pinoys. The nutritional guidelines aim to address and prevent malnutrition and diet-related non-communicable diseases such as cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.

The Kumainments are simple and easy to remember guidelines that can be easily followed by ordinary citizens to improve their nutritional status. With messages like“Kumain ng iba’t ibang pagkain”, “Kumain ng gulay at prutas araw-araw”, and “Panatilihin ang tamang timbang”, individuals are encouraged to eat the right foods, exercise right and pursue a healthy lifestyle in 10 easy rules. The messages will be aired on TV and radio stations nationwide.

A campaign character, Moises Dalisay also known as "Mang Moi", was also introduced at the launch. Patterned after Moses or Moises of the Bible story who handed out the Ten Commandments, the friendly “Mang Moi” crusades for the “10 Kumainments” that Pinoys should follow for better nutrition.
Moises "Mang Moi" Dalisay discusses the 10 Kumainments, the Nutritional Guidelines for Filipinos with Jovita Raval, the National Nutrition Council Chief of the Nutrition Information and Education Division.

“We encourage all the Nutrition Action Officers in the country to help disseminate the 10 Kumainments to the barangay level, to the households so that they can contribute in influencing proper nutrition behaviours and to also be able to help reduce malnutrition in the country,” said Jovita Raval, NNC Chief of the Nutrition Information and Education Division.

The NGF was developed by the interagency and multi-sectoral Technical Working Group on the Nutritional Guidelines for Filipinos chaired by the Food and Nutrition Research Institute of the Department of Science and Technology (FNRI‐DOST). The NGF also underwent multi-sectoral consultations. NNC was tasked to disseminate the NGF to ensure its adoption among Filipinos to contribute to improved nutrition.

The launch was attended by Nutrition Action Officers from all over the country who are also expected to help in the dissemination of the 10 Kumainments in barangays nationwide. The 3rd National Conference of Nutrition Action Officers used the theme in this program, “I Need You NAO and Forever” and conducted sessions that tackled nationwide data and project updates from the NNC and its partner agencies.

TGP and Kuya Kim partner to promote generic medicine awareness

Passionate in his advocacy of a healthy Filipino community, Matanglawin host, TV Patrol’s resident weatherman and the country’s king of trivia, Kuya Kim Atienza, recently partnered with the country’s largest drugstore chain, The Generics Pharmacy® (TGP), to promote generic medicine awareness in the Philippines.

Having gone through a massive stroke and currently battling a rare medical disorder, Kuya Kim believes that aside from the quality of a certain medicine, price is highly crucial especially with the current state of healthcare systems in the country and when it is assumed generally by private individuals.

“When I had my stroke, I realized just how pitiful our healthcare system is. What’s worse is that if you are not that well off and you suddenly get sick, it will probably cost you a fortune especially with those expensive treatments,” explained Kuya Kim. “You can also add the increasing price of medicines to the list.”

“This has been my motivation to push for affordable yet equally safe and effective alternatives when it comes to medicines. For someone who needs to spend a lot on a daily basis as treatment for my sickness, this includes constant intake of paracetamol for the pain, I am thankful that we have generic medicines that are readily available in the market today,” he added.

Kuya Kim, a health buff and fitness enthusiast, was recently diagnosed with the Guillain-Barre syndrome, a rare disease that causes the body’s immune system to attack the nerves, and when not treated early, can paralyze the entire body.

He currently stars in TGP’s latest multi-media campaign featuring the human clinical study conducted by the De La Salle Health Sciences Institute (DLSHSI) to prove the safety and efficacy of the TGP Paracetamol, the company’s first private label generic medicine.
TGP President and CEO Benjamin Liuson (left), and TGP Chief Marketing Officer Philip Tan (right) with the company’s newest brand ambassador, Matanglawin host Kuya Kim Atienza.

The TGP Paracetamol is the first clinical and human-trial tested private label generic medicine brand that is proven to be in equal effectiveness to off-patent brands. This was tested via a randomized three-way crossover single dosed bioequivalence study against the leading and innovator paracetamol brands in the market.

“Kuya Kim is the epitome of a true survivor. His experience, both in his medical battles and in his career, provides great credibility and truthfulness in our advocacy towards the promotion of generics in the country,” said TGP President and CEO Benjamin Liuson. “We are very much excited with what this partnership will bring.”

With over 1,600 franchised outlets nationwide, TGP is strengthening its pro-health advocacy by getting reputable and well-known personalities like Kuya Kim and Batangas Governor Vilma Santos-Recto to support their cause.

The company is committed to providing the highest quality of healthcare possible at a very affordable price by adding to its wide range of generic medicines like vitamins, maintenance medicines for the heart, diabetes and cholesterol, and the new TGP Paracetamol, which can be bought at only P1.00 per tablet in all TGP outlets.

TGP also offers its customers a Dial-A-Doctor service wherein they can get free medical consultation from a doctor on duty and receive recommendations right away by simply dialing 732-3333.

The service is available from Monday to Saturday, from 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM.

ABS-CBN BROADCAST HEAD NAMED AMONG 2013’s “PEOPLE OF THE YEAR”

“Servicing the Filipino people— that’s what we’re really here for. Our work is tough. There is so much stress, sacrifices, and sleepless nights. But at the end of the day, what keeps us going is the mission to reach out to Pinoys all over the world.” --- Cory Vidanes

ABS-CBN Broadcast Head Cory Vidanes was among the People of the Year awardees for 2013 (1)
ABS-CBN Broadcast Head Cory Vidanes was among the 14 personalities recognized by People Asia magazine in its annual “People of the Year” for her vital role in the achievements of the country’s largest media conglomerate over the past years, particularly her involvement and passionate support for the network’s public service campaigns.

In its 14th anniversary issue, People Asia highlighted how Vidanes can work quietly on the sidelines and achieve greatness without calling much attention to it.

Aside from spearheading campaigns that further increased ABS-CBN’s ratings, Vidanes has been very much involved in the network’s public service projects that include the network’s recent “Tulong Na, Tabang Na, Tayo Na” campaign for the victims of super typhoon Yolanda.

“I feel that I was put in this place by God because this is my purpose. If I can touch, empower or inspire the Filipino in any way I can, then I will always stay in ABS-CBN,” she added.

Other ABS-CBN personalities included on the list were actor Coco Martin, who was recognized for his contribution to Philippine television and cinema, and Miss World 2013 Megan Young, for being the first Filipina to win the much-coveted title after 62 years and for her embodiment of the pageant’s credo ‘beauty with a purpose.’

In 2010, ABS-CBN president Charo Santos-Concio was also among the “People of the Year” awardees for being the first female president of the country’s leading media corporation.

People Asia began the ‘People of the Year’ awards back in 2004. It aims to recognize world-class Filipinos who have made the country proud with their achievements, advocacies, and notable contributions to the Filipino society.

A Magical Night with LAURA FYGI on June 24!

Enjoy the wonderful world, a magical night with someone with instantly recognisable voice which has won her hearts all over the globe - Laura Fygi.

Laura Fygi is a great singer with a unique voice. Capable of delivering the great tunes of our time in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, even in Chinese. She combines easily and with great enthusiasm the different genres and styles of today’s’ beautiful songs.
Come and experience a night of jazz and magical performance as Laura Fygi visits Manila for the first time on June 24, 2013, 8pm at Fairmont Raffles Hotel in Makati City.

The woman who was raised in Uruguay as the daughter of an Egyptian belly dancer, in the Far East Laura Fygi is the emancipated Western lady who many others aspire to be. But wherever she may be, there’s one common factor in all of those locations. Everywhere that she visits, she is a veritable vision of exotica.
Her travel-packed lifestyle has provided her with the most amazing experiences, as Laura has been a welcome return visitor to Asia for years. As a Dutch singer, being loved most by Asian countries, especially in China, has already been one great achievement for her.

During the press conference, they remarked that the Chinese audience decided which foreign artist was to be invited, and that they had chosen me. It made me go very quiet for a moment,” she said as included in her profile.

Surprises are typical for a performer who has re-invented herself many times. Since her dance hits with the girl group Centerfold in the early 1980s, Laura has travelled down numerous musical pathways, such as jazz, Latin, and chansons: not shying away from any genre or style.

I really dislike pigeon holes”, says the multi-faceted diva.I’m always on the lookout for something new, because I don’t think you should repeat yourself. I can’t stand to be in a rut.”

Laura has also been presented with various gold and platinum discs and awards, as well as playing the lead role in Singapore of her favourite musical Victor/Victoria.

Laura has released 12 albums since her debut in 1991 including the 2011’s “The Best Is Yet To Come”. The album highlights Laura’s 20th anniversary as a solo artist and was recorded with a big band. It was followed by an extensive tour in both the Netherlands and Asia where Laura performed with local big bands.

Being well-loved by the Asians, Laura released her 13th album which was made specially for the Asian market. New album called “Flower” boasts four songs which were actually sung in Chinese and other titles were translated in English and French.
Spend "A Magical Night with Laura Fygi", and presented by Laurel Media on June 24 at the Fairmont Raffles Hotel with special guests and our countries very own talents inlcuding Jacqui Magno, Richard Merq and Jeannie Tiongco.

Callalily and 6cyclemind join forces to "Switch!" on June 7

Two of Philippine’s hottest bands Callalily and 6cyclemind join forces to bring you “SWITCH”, one of this year’s most anticipated events in the local music industry. This is their very first time, back-to-back major concert!

This SWITCH will be held on June 7, 2013 at the Music Museum. Audience should look forward to this special back-to-back concert as it will feature both bands’ hits and exciting surprises! Get to experience what “SWITCH” is all about!
During the mini TV press and bloggers conference last Tuesday, May 7, 2013 held at Sir Boy's Food Republic, Panay Quezon City,  Kean Cipriano and Tutti Caringal shared to us that the SWITCH idea started when Callalily and 6cyclemind were doing regular back-to-back shows in 70’s bistro. The response from fans were positive that they asked “Why not bring this to a bigger platform and make it a major concert?!”.

This will definitely be a great way to give back to their fans and treat them to an extraordinary show.

SWITCH will also showcase the brotherhood between the two bands. The Callalily boys comprised of Kean Cipriano, Aaron Ricafrente, Lemuel Belaro and Tatsi Jamnague consider the 6cyclemind boys (Tutti Caringal, Bobby Cañamo, Rye Sarmiento, Herbert Hernandez and Vic Aquino) as one of their mentors who introduced them in the local music industry when they were still starting out. Both bands have come a long way but it will be good to know that their relationship has strengthened throughout the years.

This is an important event not only for Callalily and 6cyclemind but also for the local music industry in general as it will show that fans are still supportive of local artists in spite of the influx of foreign acts and that there are more good things to look forward to in Filipino music.

Google’s resource page for Philippine elections gets hits from over 50 countries

For the Philippine elections 2013, the Google’s resource page gets hits from over 50 countries around the world. Since its launch on the first week of May, Google’s Philippine elections resource page (Google.com.ph/elections) has been getting hits from over 50 countries around over the world. As of this writing, the resource page has been visited by Internet users from as far as Uzbekistan, Rwanda, Finland, and the Netherlands.

The resource page is a collaboration between Google Philippines and broadcast networks ABS-CBN, GMA, PTV, and SOLARtv, and online news portals Rappler.com, PhilStar.com, Inquirer.net and Interaksyon.com. The site brings together election-related updates from Google Philippines’ partner media establishments in one platform.

The content-rich Elections Page contains stories culled from various local news sites. Users can search for election-related news information by political party or national issue. Broadcast coverage are also aggregated from participating networks’ YouTube channels into one tab. Election-related incidents are also plotted on a Google Maps map tile of the Philippines embedded in the site. This provides Internet users a visual idea of crisis and violence levels in areas of interest.

“We are proud to see that many Filipinos outside the Philippines are finding the site helpful. The millions of overseas Filipinos, including the 700,000 registered absentee voters abroad, are out of reach of the candidates’ traditional campaign propaganda. Through the site, we are able to make election-related information accessible to them, helping them make their decision come election day,” said Narciso Reyes, Google Philippines Country Manager.

The IMMIGRANT , quarterly direct mail newszine

The IMMIGRANT is the Philippine travel issue. This is a free quarterly direct mail newszine for expatriates in the Philippines. It is the premium quarterly publication for the foreign Immigrants, expats communities, Balikbayans, high-networth Filipinos, the emerging affluent entrepreneurs and international visitors in the Philippines.
The IMMIGRANT was launched last April 18, held at The Taipan, Tower Club, Makati City. It was hosted by well known Atty. Katrina Legarda and with guest speakers Henry Schumacher, VP External Affairs, European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines (ECCP and Her Britannic Majesty's Ambassador Stephen Lillie and speaker Department of Tourism Undersecretary The Hon. Daniel Corpuz.
The IMMIGRANT’s dream is not just to have the power to be heard, or be read, but moreover, the power to influence their decisions. By always giving them everything and only what’s relevant. The vision is to be more than just a paper. In every article and content that we put out, the goal is to always to earn and to deserve our readers' trust.

With the influx of high net worth foreign investors, executives and entrepreneurs into the Philippines, the expat community is continuously growing. And with this massive growth, there is a steady rise of opportunities that these individuals would gladly benefit from - being their personal adviser on everything about life in this country, to being a professional consultant on business, laws and immigration affairs, or even as simple as being their personal storyteller. They need to hear a voice that is focused on them. A voice that professionally informs and personally connects them to everything and only what’s relevant to their stay in the Philippines. And right now, there is only one publication that is trying to be this voice. “Trying” being the operative word. And so the Immigrant has spotted this role that needs to be fulfilled, and not just for the sake of putting a paper out there for them, but actually perfecting that paper, from design, to relevant content, to distribution, to basically every detail, The Immigrant will be that voice that they would trust and would want to hear again and again.

The IMMIGRANT is headed by Publisher Atty.Jose 'Pepe' Villanueva III and Editor-at-Large Walter C. Villa. Editorial Board members are Henry Schumacher, Atty.Katrina Legarda and Dean Ernest P. Maceda Jr.
THE IMMIGRANT is providing all much needed and much desired information, in a paper that’s created perfectly and specifically for them, The IMMIGRANT gives them relevant solutions, which would render their residencies convenient and their business ventures as profitable as possible. And most importantly, The IMMIGRANT will share with them stories worth being heard for them to feast on the colorful life that this country has to offer.
