Change Make Her: The Coca-Cola Foundation Joins Forces with Microloan Platform Kiva to Support up to 45,000 Entrepreneurs Around The World Including the Philippines

The Coca-Cola Foundation has announced its support for Change Make Her, a new five-year partnership with microloan nonprofit Kiva to improve financial access for under-represented entrepreneurs around the world.
The announcement was made at the Coca-Cola “Level the Playing Field” DEI Summit in Sydney as the company builds on its long legacy of support for the FIFA Women’s World CupTM. Coca-Cola continues to work with influential partners around the world in a broader push for progress for women and under-represented groups across business and society.

Kiva is best-known for its global lending platform, which provides a simple way to connect lenders with borrowers through crowdfunding microfinance. This is an effective strategy to help get loans to people who would not otherwise have access to commercial bank services.

Over the next five years, Change Make Her will act as a revolving loan fund, supporting entrepreneurs in Southeast Asia, South Pacific, Africa, Latin America and Europe across a number of impact areas, including sustainable agriculture, climate resilience, water and retail.

Saadia Madsbjerg, president of The Coca-Cola Foundation, said repayments from borrowers will return to the fund, allowing funding to be loaned and re-loaned to borrowers around the world. This structure will allow a $1.1 million grant in 2023 to have up to a $4.5 million impact on loan volume by 2028.

“We are thrilled to announce our new partnership with Kiva, which goes beyond traditional forms of giving,” Madsbjerg said. “By joining forces with like-minded lenders and partners from around the world, the Change Make Her fund will enable us to lend, and relend, alongside thousands of others. It is a partnership based on a shared belief in the power of access to finance to uplift communities.

“Micro-enterprises are important contributors to job creation and global economic development,” Madsbjerg said. “We hope that in addition to directly supporting entrepreneurs, Change Make Her will create a ripple effect for generations to come as these entrepreneurs go on to create new jobs and drive prosperity in their communities.”

Over the past 17 years, Kiva has deployed over $2 billion to 4.7 million borrowers globally, more than any other crowdfunding platform. More than 80% of Kiva loans go to women, with a 96% repayment rate. In the Philippines, Kiva has provided loans of over $185,000 or nearly P10.5M to more than 587,000 borrowers across the country.
“Kiva is honoured to partner with The Coca-Cola Foundation in expanding our work of financial access through life-changing loans,” said Vishal Ghotge, CEO of Kiva. “Together, we will be able to serve thousands more individuals than we would be able to do alone, demonstrating the collective power of value-aligned organizational partnerships. We are grateful to The Coca-Cola Foundation for its commitment and look forward to working alongside one another as we continue to advance gender equity, refugee financial inclusion, and climate-smart solutions in communities across the globe.”

Over the last four decades, The Coca-Cola Foundation has supported many economic empowerment programs across the world, including the decade-long 5by20 program, which together with The Coca-Cola Company and its bottling partners, enabled the economic empowerment of over 6 million women.

Through the Change Make Her program, Coca-Cola employees will be able to help direct Kiva loans to entrepreneurs and directly engage in supporting The Coca-Cola Foundation’s mission. To find out more about Kiva’s platform, visit www.kiva.org.

Linya-Linya strengthens community-driven initiatives with launch of “Tulong-Tulong” at Linya-Linya Land 2023

Aside from showcasing music, comedy, and arts at the multi-format festival, the witty t-shirt and content creation company aims to provide a platform for their partner organizations to educate the public about their advocacies and cause.

Along with the country’s top musicians, comedians, and artists, Linya-Linya will be bringing its partner organizations to Linya-Linya Land 2023 where they will be given a space to inform and educate the public about their causes, get donations for their beneficiaries, and recruit volunteers for their projects.

Best known for its witty and punny Filipino lines on shirts and content, Linya-Linya has long been doing its part to put smiles on its partner organizations through “Tulong-Tulong,” a program for all of the brand’s outreach efforts. Currently, Linya-Linya partners with several organizations that cover advocacy on education, equality, and animal welfare, including: AHA! Learning Center, Angat Buhay Foundation, Mindanao Pride, Love Yourself PH, and Pawssion Project.

Through selling of select shirts and other merch, Linya-Linya is able to provide funds and awareness to help the said organizations. Linya-Linya’s Creative Director Ali Sangalang explains the importance of extending a helping hand to amplify the messaging of the cause. “Bilang mga Pilipinong humaharap sa iba’t ibang hamon sa panahon ngayon, mahalaga ang tulong. Pero ang totoo, mas malakas at mas epektibo kapag tulong-tulong tayo.”

Tulong-Tulong started at the height of the pandemic, during the time when frontliners and families-at-risk were in need of medical-grade supplies. To extend help, portions of the sales of selected Linya-Linya shirts were donated to Frontline Feeders PH, AHA! Learning Center, and Life Cycles PH.

With the success of this simple gesture to help the people in need amidst the pandemic, Linya-Linya strengthens the initiative by giving shirts to students, mothers, and teachers from AHA! Learning Center and helped in renovating the Angat Buhay Community Learning Hub in Area 17, UP Campus, Quezon City.

Celebrating Filipino talent and supporting local artists has been a part of Linya-Linya’s advocacies. Alongside the celebration of these collaborations, attendees are up for a special treat as Linya-Linya launches new limited edition shirts in collaboration with “Bawat Daan” singer Ebe Dancel and the classic and iconic comic artist Pol Medina, Jr

Aside from the performances and other activities at the event, the shirt company will hold a Super Sale where attendees can avail shirts and other merch for as low as P188.

Linya-Linya Land 2023 will be happening on August 26, 2023 at 123 Block in Mandaluyong City. Presented by Linya-Linya and GNN Entertainment Productions, the annual event takes hilarious puns to an exciting new level with its showcase of multi-format headliners that aim to create an integrated experience for the community and the fans.

This year’s edition marks an impactful comeback with a lineup featuring some of the most notable names in music, comedy, and art. Filipino singer-songwriters and bands Ebe Dancel, Johnoy Danao, Nica Del Rosario, Cheats, Autotelic, and DJ Ayel lead the bill, alongside standup comedians Victor Anastacio, Nonong Ballinan, GB Labrador, James Caraan, and Jeleen Cubillas. Completing the non-performing headliners are some of the most acclaimed and established talents in Philippine art: Manix Abrera, Rob Cham, and Pol Medina Jr., whose work will be exhibited at the ‘art’ market; and muralists/illustrators Panch Alvarez and AG Saño, who will be bringing uniquely infused art experiences to life.

PMCC (4th Watch) launches nationwide bloodletting activity supported by Philippine Red Cross

With the beginning of the month-long observance of the National Blood Donors’ Month, the Pentecostal Missionary Church of Christ (4th Watch) or PMCC (4th Watch) reiterated the life-saving importance of blood donations during its National Bloodletting Activity last July 8.

The blood drive was launched at the Philippine Red Cross main office in Mandaluyong, and was conducted simultaneously across 30 locations in the Philippines, including Cavite, Quezon, Mindoro, Aklan, Bacolod, Davao, and Metro Manila.
Apostle Arsenio T. Ferriol, the church’s Chief Executive Minister, along with Bishop Jonathan Ferriol, Deputy Executive Minister, led the launch of the National Bloodletting Activity with the support of Philippine Red Cross Chairman Richard “Dick” Gordon. Local government units and advocates also expressed their support for the church’s blood drive.

Bishop Ferriol underscored the important duty of the church in uplifting the lives of everyone in the community. “As the PMCC (4th Watch), we firmly believe that churches have a vital role as partners within the community, dedicated to bringing positive change and serving the needs of the people,” he said.
For its part, PMCC (4th Watch) has established partnerships with local governments, community leaders, and organizations such as the Philippine Red Cross to strengthen the church’s outreach efforts across the country. The church has also opened its outreach activities to the general public, regardless of their religious affiliation.

“Our aim is to unite Filipinos in a collective effort to create a healthier and more vibrant community, highlighting the universal values of compassion, service, and solidarity,” Bishop Ferriol explained.

Then-President Fidel V. Ramos declared the month of July as National Blood Donors’ Month under Proclamation No. 1021, signed on June 9, 1977, to spread awareness on the importance of blood transfusions and to encourage more Filipinos to donate blood.

Bishop Ferriol noted the connection between the life-giving nature of blood donations and the transformative power of the Gospel. “Both endeavors aim to bring new life, whether through the spiritual nourishment of the Word or the physical revitalization through blood transfusions,” he explained.

The church’s blood drive is also part of its ongoing 50th anniversary celebration, which will include another series of medical missions to underserved communities in the Philippines and a number of prayer and healing crusades around the world. This will culminate in a National Convention and a Golden Anniversary Celebration at the New Clark City Athletics Stadium in Capas, Tarlac on August 27.

Bishop Ferriol, however, maintained that the church’s milestone is not a reason to boast. “It serves as a reminder of our responsibility to give back to the community that has supported and collaborated with us over the years,” he said.

Art meets philanthropy: Globe partners with ATIN Global and SEE Global to battle hunger through Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel Exhibit

Globe has joined ATIN Global and SEE Global Entertainment in introducing "Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel: The Exhibition" to the Philippines and Southeast Asia, using the transformative power of art to battle hunger.
(L-R) Yoly Crisanto, Globe Group Chief Sustainability and Corporate Communications Officer; Sabrina Co, Founder and creative director of ATIN Global Inc; Martin Biallas, CEO, SEE Global; Marlon Chen, Manila Symphony Orchestra Conductor; and Dr. Christie Monina Nalupta, Assistant Secretary General of the Philippine Red Cross

This initiative brings together the beauty of Michelangelo's masterpieces with a noble cause – feeding the hungry and providing livelihood programs to uplift lives. It comes at a time when an estimated 13.5 million Filipinos* continue to grapple with daily sustenance amid persisting challenges such as unemployment and the high cost of basic goods.

To support the cause, a portion of proceeds from every ticket sold will go to the Hapag Movement, a program spearheaded by Globe that leverages technology and brings together an ecosystem of partners to address hunger and unemployment through supplemental feeding and livelihood programs.

Together with Hapag Movement mobilization partners Ayala Foundation, Caritas Philippines, Tzu Chi Foundation Philippines, World Vision Philippines, and Scholars of Sustenance, Globe aims to address involuntary hunger among 100,000 families in four years to create social impact at scale.

“At the Globe Group, we believe that great art, especially this one, should be shared with everyone, particularly with our kababayans. We understand that not all of us can afford to visit Rome so this is one of the best ways of doing it,” said Yoly Crisanto, Chief Sustainability and Corporate Communications Officer at the Globe Group.

“We are grateful to have Globe as a partner for this landmark cultural event in the Philippines. Through this partnership, not only are we bringing historic art to Filipinos, we are also able to spread awareness about involuntary hunger and encourage our patrons to help,” said Sabrina Co, Founder and Creative Director of ATIN Global Inc.

Citing the depictions of hell and purgatory in Michelangelo’s paintings, Crisanto pointed out how they are similar to the torment that millions of Filipinos are going through due to hunger.

“When you see hell, when you see purgatory in the Michelangelo paintings, maybe you can imagine what kind of hell people who are going hungry in this country are actually experiencing. And that is why we partnered with ATIN Global and SEE Global because we want to be able to put in the hearts of the people the appreciation of great art, but also to use this exhibition as a way of helping our fellow kababayans,” she said.

The internationally acclaimed exhibition, which has toured over 100 cities around the world, from New York to Shanghai and London to Melbourne, features reprints of 34 of Michelangelo's most renowned frescoes, including esteemed works like "The Last Judgment" and "The Creation of Adam."

Visitors of the exhibition will be transported to the Sistine Chapel through an ingenious multi-sensory experience, with the frescoes complemented by ambient Renaissance music especially curated by Manila Symphony Orchestra conductor Marlon Chan, and subtle scents reminiscent of the era curated by Sabrina Co, Founder of ATIN Inc.

Guests are allowed to photograph these magnificent works of art and enjoy numerous selfie opportunities throughout the exhibit. An Art Room is also open for parents and children to bond over coloring images that will adorn the Art Wall. For food enthusiasts, Caffe Michelangelo is there to offer a unique dining experience with Italian desserts and coffees.

The exhibition will run from July 1 to September 30, 2023 at the Estancia Mall, Capitol Commons, Pasig City. Tickets can be purchased online or at the venue, with rates at PHP 500 for students, Senior Citizens, and Persons with Disability, P650 for regular visitors on weekdays and P750 on weekends, and PHP 950 for VIP Priority Access.

ChildFund Philippines strengthen Its position as DepEd’s Emergency Response Partner

ChildFund Philippines, a child-focused NGO serving children, youth, and their families in the Philippines since the 1970s and at present, actively backs Department of Education (DepEd) in its Education in Emergency efforts.

The Department of Education (DepEd) has recognized ChildFund Philippines as one of its development sector partners. In the Disaster Risk Reduction Management Services (DRRMS) Terminal Report released in February 2023, the government agency cited the participation of the non-government organization (NGO) in the Education Cluster’s emergency response efforts particularly for communities devastated by Super Typhoon Karding (international name Noru) in September 2022 and Typhoon Paeng (international name Nalgae) in November 2022.

ChildFund Philippines has partnered with REINA Federation of Parents Association and Ha Uman Association, Inc. to distribute learner and teacher kits; provide Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) to learners, teachers, and parents; and conduct MHPSS Training of Trainers (ToT) to frontliners, educators, and community leaders in affected communities in Quezon province and the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).
MHPSS in the aftermath of Karding

In September 2022, Super Typhoon Karding devastated areas in the eastern part of Luzon, including the towns of Burdeos and Panukulan, the eastern and western coast municipalities of Polillo Island in the province of Quezon. As a partner of DepEd’s DRRMS, ChildFund

Philippines directly participated in the provision of response programs to affected residents of the distressed town.

After a quick assessment of the calamity’s impact to people, especially children, ChildFund Philippines rolled out the MHPSS program in Burdeos. Forty-seven frontline service providers (including guidance counselors, teachers, child development workers and local government unit representatives) engaged for ToT, which trained them to conduct MHPSS sessions that cover not just children but also parents and other community members.

“Through the seminars, we were able to help our students move on and realize the importance of education especially during difficult times,” said Mark Jade Alpajora, Teacher-in-Charge in Anibawan Elementary School in Anibawan, one of the most devastated barangays in Burdeos. “Eventually, they were able to return to school and continue their interest in learning despite the challenges. For our part as educators, we are confident we can now do the same and help our students carry on in case disasters hit our area again in the future.”

Trained PFA-ers in action after Paeng

The MHPSS program and the Psychological First Aid (PFA) training likewise equipped educators in the municipalities of Datu Odin Sinsuat and Upi in Maguindanao del Norte, which were severely devastated by flash floods and landslides due to continuous and torrential rains brought about by strong typhoon Paeng in October 2022. (The typhoon did not directly hit Mindanao but it intensified monsoon rains, resulting to catastrophic floods and landslides that do not usually hit provinces in the region.)

“Most of us were depressed because it was the first time I could remember that we were severely affected by a typhoon in our area,” said Rhodora Hadjihamid, a teacher from Noru Central School of Upi town. “There were initially 10 of us teachers who were trained under ChildFund Philippines’s MHPSS and then we were able to train other teachers, guidance coordinators, and daycare facilitators in other areas in our municipalities. We are thankful for this support and for some learning materials provided to us.”

The towns of Burdeos in Quezon and Datu Odin Sinsuat and Upi in Maguindanao del Norte are not among the program-supported areas of ChildFund Philippines in the country. But the NGO regularly provides support even to non-program areas as an official development partner of DepEd DRMSS, which holds cluster programs as part of disaster relief efforts nationwide.

“Based on the disaster impact and recommendations from our nearby partner areas, we looked at the situation in Burdeos and Panukulan and found the need to intervene. The same was the case for areas in Maguindanao del Norte a month after,” disclosed Erwin Galido, DRM Program Specialist in ChildFund Philippines.

Galido further explained that ChildFund Philippines focuses on interventions that would maximize limited resources—including replacement of learning materials so that learners could immediately go back to school and provision of MHPSS sessions.

Partnership with DepEd

Marlene Floresca, ChildFund Philippines Education Specialist explained that the organization “complements and supplements the Department of Education’s existing resources.”

She further explained that when a disaster hits an area, ChildFund assesses if additional support is needed particularly in education.

“We take part in the national government’s objective to have a coordinated response and help distribute relief assistance in affected communities and schools after calamities,” said Floresca.

“ChildFund Philippines also provides psychological first aid and training to educators and local government representatives so they can perform MHPSS to children and people in their respective communities,” she added.

Putting focus on mental health

According to Galido, ChildFund Philippines’ focus is to provide support that would equip key members of local government agencies and partner schools on the basic skills of providing MHPSS sessions so they could “help children and other people in their area to immediately overcome the emotional and mental stress they are experiencing and emerge with better disposition despite the disaster.”

Mental Health and Psychosocial Support is a vital initiative aimed at nurturing emotional well-being and assisting individuals in coping with life's challenges. MHPSS encompasses a range of activities designed to support the mental and emotional health of people affected by disasters.

These activities include providing compassionate counseling services, equipping individuals with effective coping strategies to manage stress and anxiety, promoting self-care practices such as exercise and relaxation techniques, establishing safe and supportive community groups where individuals can share their experiences and extend support to one another, and fostering awareness about mental health issues to eliminate stigma and foster a culture of seeking help.

Education in emergency through community participation

“Disasters disrupt children's normalcy, including their opportunities to learn and equip themselves for the future. Childhood is a critical window of opportunity to support the optimum development of young people,” explained Floresca.

She further emphasized that ChildFund's mission to help create a nurturing environment to support this development equips children to become productive members of their communities.

“Education in Emergencies is a life-saving intervention, as it does not only assure children's learning continuity, it also provides a safe space for children who have experienced adversities amidst disasters.”

ChildFund Philippines, however, underscores the importance of partnerships (including DepEd DRMSS and other local government and non-government partners) and community participation in sustainably equipping victims of disasters and engaging educators, parents, and local leaders with the right skills to make sure there is immediate support, especially in terms of mental health in times of emergency.

“Our partnership with local civil society organizations (CSOs) in disaster-prone communities enable us to respond quickly and effectively to humanitarian crises in the Philippines,” said Anand Vishwakarma, Country Director of ChildFund Philippines.

“Thus, ChildFund is able to achieve its organizational goals of promoting safety, health, and education in the Philippines by providing emergency assistance and education support to children and families in need. This not only helps address the immediate needs of children and families affected by emergencies but also provides a foundation for long-term recovery and resilience-building efforts,” Vishwakarma added.

ChildFund’s national and global strategies are designed to promote well-being of children, especially those living in poverty and facing different forms of disadvantage. In the Philippines and in other countries where it has presence, the organization puts a strong emphasis on emergency response and education in emergencies as part of its mission to keep children healthy, educated, skilled, and safe.
