Grab cools down thousands of street workers, delivery riders on Labor Day
The leading superapp provides relief to street workers and delivery riders enduring the summer heat in Quezon City, Cebu City, and Davao City
In honor of Labor Day, Grab Philippines has cooled down thousands of street workers and other skilled professionals at its Grab Palamig Spots.
In light of the cautionary heat indices averaging 39°C to 40°C in Metro Manila, Davao, and Cebu, the Grab Palamig Spots were strategically stationed in high-traffic and accessible locations across these regions: Quezon City Memorial Circle, Agdao Public Market, and the SM City Cebu Terminal. The spots served as cold and convenient rest stops for street sweepers, traffic enforcers, delivery riders, and other workers who spend their days under the heat of the sun.
Cooling down these street workers, the Grab Palamig Spots maintained soothing temperatures as low as 16°C in its mini-lounge areas. And in a world where 'cooling down' is typically associated with the color blue, the leading superapp has reimagined it in a vibrant shade of green – offering green summer coolers like flavorful avocado and buko pandan ice creams, and crowd-favorite sodas and sweet tea drinks to its Palamig guests.
Various refreshments were given away for free to the Grab Palamig Spots guests
The Grab Palamig Spots, an initiative under Grab’s No Sweat Summer campaign, is a manifestation of the superapp’s commitment to enabling all Filipinos to go through the hot season conveniently and hassle-free – with much-needed breaks and moments of respite in between.
Showing Up for the Community
Understanding the impact of the intense summer heat on workers who make their living on the road, Grab’s very own delivery-partners volunteered to help in the distribution of the coolers to the guests at the Grab Palamig Spots. The Grab Ugnayan Advocates – a network of delivery-riders focused on community outreach, scoured the areas where the Grab Palamig Spots are to invite and assist street workers as they cooled down with Grab.
Big Daddy, an Ugnayan Advocate, shared how he empathizes with the country’s street workers.
“Ang laking epekto sa amin ng init, lalo na madalas kaming nakababad sa init ng araw. Kaya saludo ako sa mga kapwa ko rider at mga kagaya naming mga naghahanapbuhay sa kalsada. Noong narinig ko na may ganito tayong espesyal na kaganapan para sa amin at sa iba pang manggaawa sa daan, agad-agad naming napagdesisyonan na tumulong kahit sa papaano mang paraan,” Big Daddy shares.
Prior to volunteering at the Grab Palamig Spots, the Ugnayan Advocates have been going around in select pit stops that are famous among delivery riders to give away free refreshments to their colleagues – regardless of platform affiliation.

Social media influencers take on challenge to be Creators #ForEveryChild to protect children from online abuse and exploitation
As the country wraps up this year’s Safer Internet Month, UNICEF Philippines awarded the first-ever annual badge of recognition to digital influencers who accepted the challenge to be Creators #ForEveryChild. They have lent their unique creative platforms and reach to fight for the rights of every child in the country, especially the most vulnerable to online abuse and exploitation.

The Creators #ForEveryChild - AJ Bacar, Anina Rubio, Buji
Babiera, Cat Triviño, Ginger Arboleda, Inka Magnaye, Jing Ruiz, Karl
Bautista, Raco Ruiz, Reb Atadero, Riyan Portuguez - received
the badge and certificates of appreciation during the Safer Internet Convention
on Digital Responsibility held by UNICEF today. These influencers’ have
contributed to ending online sexual abuse and exploitation of children,
including abusive and exploitative materials. This is very timely, as most
Philippine children and young people look up – some of them exclusively - to
social media influencers for informative content.
This year’s theme
calls on everyone to prevent
this scrouge and work with Government to step up implementation of Republic Act
11930, otherwise known as the Anti-Online Sexual Abuse and Exploitation of
Children and Anti-Child Sexual Abuse and Exploitation Material Act, that
strengthens the country’s response and protection of children to online
predators. According to a UNICEF-ECPAT-Interpol Disrupting Harm study, 20 per cent of children, 12 to 17, reported being
victims of this abuse in 2021. Unfortunately, due to stigma, disclosure is
disproportionately low - despite various
reporting channels. Only 0-4 per
cent of victims ever reported, and only 0-3 per cent know how to report to the
police or to helplines.
The convention was attended by close to 100 children and
youth who co-developed a Digital Responsibility Programme which aims to
increase the capacity and protective behavior of learners and teachers in
navigating online and digital platforms. It was organized by the Positive Youth
Development Network, the Department of Education and the local government units
of Valenzuela City and Angeles City with UNICEF support.
UNICEF
Philippines underscores the importance of adults and children in growing their
understanding of their digital responsibility. Safer internet Month is helping
build youth, parent and caregiver’s digital literacy or the skills they need to
live, learn, and work in a society where information is increasingly channeled
through digital technology and social media. Ultimately, the collective effort
will maximize the positive experience that children and young people can get
from the internet, while preventing all forms of online abuse and
exploitation.

Chevron holds annual coastal cleanup in Batangas for sea turtles nesting season
Chevron employees and members of the local government in Batangas joined
hands during the annual coastal cleanup in San Pascual Batangas.
To
help pave the way for a safer sea turtle nesting season, Chevron Philippines
Inc. (CPI), marketer of Caltex fuels and lubricants, and its partners managed
to collect about 685 bags of non-biodegradable and biodegradable trash from the
coast of San Pascual, Batangas during a recent coastal cleanup.
CPI has been organizing the coastal cleanup in San Pascual for 10 years which is a nesting site for Olive-Ridley sea turtles. The activity also aims to boost the volunteerism spirit among the people of CPI and the community in San Pascual. More than 80 participants, composed of employees and contractors from CPI and the local government unit, joined this year.
The coastline in San Pascual straddles the Chevron Batangas Terminal, which has been a major facility of Chevron for more than 65 years and a home to marine animals, including sea turtles. More recently, 10 Olive Ridley sea turtle nests were spotted near the foot of the wharf between the causeway. To date, Chevron Batangas has released a total of 111 hatchlings. CPI commits itself to making the shoreline a safe habitat for sea creatures as part of its dedication to human safety, livelihood, and the environment.

Globe’s Hapag Movement fulfills wishes of Cebu scholars through ‘Wish’ screening
Until that evening two weeks before Christmas, 22-year-old Michelle Camus had never been to the cinema. She had only seen movies on television, hearing from friends all about the “ambiance” in a movie theater.
“They say inside the cinema it’s lights off. I thought the lights were turned on. I really wanted to experience this, watching in the cinema. This is not just my wish. Ginusto ko talaga makarating sa cinema (I really wanted to go to a cinema). And at the age of 22, I’m here. So napakasaya naman nito (I’m really happy about this)!” she excitedly said.
Camus is among 69 scholars of Tzu Chi Foundation who were treated to a full cinematic experience organized by Globe’s Hapag Movement, with support from the We Are Ayala Business Club - Cebu (WAABC-Cebu). The scholars enjoyed a private screening of Disney Animation’s latest musical comedy “Wish” on December 12 at the Ayala Malls Central Bloc.
Indeed, it was a wish come true for the scholars, all students of humanities classes under Tzu Chi, among Hapag Movement’s implementing partners. Not only did they get to watch the movie in a private screening in one of Ayala Cinemas’ most comfortable theaters, they also got to enjoy fun games, prizes, food, drinks and other surprises.
“For me it’s a great privilege. Bihira lang maka-join lalo sa ganitong pagkakataon, especially with scholars of Tzu Chi Foundation and together with the Hapag Movement. We’re so blessed. And hopefully marami pang matulungan ang Hapag at napaka-blessed namin sa taon ngayon dahil isa kami sa naimbita sa araw na ito (It is very seldom that we get this kind of opportunity, specially with scholars of Tzu Chi Foundation and Hapag Movement. We’re so blessed and hopefully, there will be more people that the Hapag Movement will be able to help. We are really blessed this year because we got to be invited to be here today),” said Shyrwin Rondina, also among scholars invited to the screening.
Mariel Ybañez, Certified Commissioner at Tzu Chi Foundation Cebu, said: “These activities will help our scholars learn more about life through movies. In Tzu Chi, we teach them values and through this movie “Wish,” they will learn a lot. That’s really the teaching of Tzu Chi, for us to become a star for other people,” Ybañez said.
At the special screening, Patrick Gloria, Globe Group Vice President for External Affairs, spoke to the scholars about the Hapag Movement and thanked collaborators that made the event possible.
“This special screening organized by Globe is supported by WeAreAyala Business Club - Cebu for the benefit of the Hapag Movement. The Hapag Movement is a program where we help the most vulnerable people in society, especially children. We make sure we feed them right and give their families livelihood training so that they will have a sustainable source of income to put food on their table. Thank you for doing this with us and let’s do this again next year,” Gloria said.
By leveraging technology and partnerships, the Hapag Movement aims to help 100,000 families battling involuntary hunger through supplemental feeding and livelihood training.
