Team DJE, Team Bulahao, and Kneutral MNL, Amaia’s Upcycling Challenge Winners

Upcycling competition reinforces Amaia Nuvali lifestyle
,  the process of turning used goods or waste material to produce something that is often better than the original, is the most viable option. This was the idea behind Amaia Steps Parkway Nuvali's The Upcycling Challenge.

The Amaia’s Upcycling Challenge finalists created home products that are useful to Amaia homeowners and consistent with the theme "Living Re-Imagined."
The contestants were invited in Solenad 1, Nuvali where they executed their designs. Check the complete list of the 13 participated teams at "Living Re-Imagined” - Amaia Steps Parkway Nuvali holds Upcycling Challenge

Last Saturday, October 24, Amaia’s Upcycling Challenge Winners were Team DJE, Team Bulahao, and Kneutral MNL.

The grand winner Team DJE with "Bubble Coral" was awarded P100,000 in cash and a glass trophy during the last day of the competition. Kneutral MNL Carissa Patricia Del Rosario and Jose Masucol of Kneutral Collection creates a useful table out of green plastic soda bottles.

For the Upcycling Challenge last Oct. 17 and  24 at the Solenad 1, Nuvali, 13 groups were each given 24 hours to create marketable and practical home products using a selected material, in this case, plastic soft drink bottles.  Each team was provided with P3,000 for raw materials and transportation to the site.

Upcycling helps reduce carbon emissions, which are the amount of carbon dioxide produced to support our lifestyles. Your carbon footprint measures your impact on the climate based on how much carbon dioxide you produce. Factors that contribute to your carbon footprint include your methods of transportation and energy usage.

If they're not biodegradable, they're out there occupying space and possibly polluting the earth's seas or forests. Before throwing anything out, think about that. It may be a small step but it's something that will matter in the long run.

Upcycling also saves money (like making old clothes into a bed cover) and helps preserve out resources.

Ayala Land’s Nuvali, which spans 1,750 hectares, is an inspiring model of a green, sustainable eco-community. Built on the pillars of environmental, economic, and social sustainability, community development remains a primary objective of Nuvali to achieve this balance.

Nuvali, located in the cities of Sta. Rosa, Calamba and the Municipality of Cabuyao in Laguna, is part of the growth corridor of the Calabarzon region. Its campus environment integrates a community where residences, business and recreation flow seamlessly. It is a community where you would proudly raise a family.

The works are currently posted on Amaia Land Corp.'s official Facebook page. The entry with the most number of likes on Facebook received a special prize.

"Living Re-Imagined” - Amaia Steps Parkway Nuvali holds Upcycling Challenge

In a bid to turn waste materials into more useful resources, real estate developer Amaia Land Corp. recently launched the first Amaia Steps Parkway Nuvali Upcycling Challenge last Saturday, Oct. 17, at Solenad 1, Nuvali, in Sta. Rosa, Laguna.

Amaia’s Upcycling Challenge saw the participation of a slew of design students, professionals, and upcycling enthusiasts, out of which thirteen were chosen finalists. All the participants are given sufficient time to create marketable and practical home products from scratch using a selected material—in this case, plastic soft drink bottles.

Mirror
Team Mirror composed of Denver Aurallo and Kate Oliva prepares their materials for the Amaia Parkway Nuvali Upcycling Challenge.

The ongoing environmental competition is scheduled to hold its awarding ceremonies on Sunday, October 25, where only three of the most creative ideas and designs will be chosen.

Ricky Celis, Amaia Land Corp. president, said the upcycling contest was meant to encourage the public to creatively reduce waste by turning these into useful and aesthetically pleasing products.

“When waste products are not biodegradable, these occupy space out there and possibly pollute the environment. Thus, before throwing anything out, why not consider upcycling them?” Celis pointed out.

“Caring for the environment has always been part of our advocacy. We wanted a project that would push this cause, so the Upcycling Challenge was really perfect for us.

Here in Amaia Steps Parkway Nuvali, we encourage everyone to live a life that is one with nature—to not just enjoy its beauty but also care for it,” he added.

Upcycling, also known as creative reuse, is the process of turning old and discarded goods or waste materials into something useful and beautiful and with better environmental value.

For the Amaia Steps Parkway Nuvali Upcycling Challenge, in particular, the finalists were tasked to create home products that must be useful to Amaia homeowners—an endeavor that was consistent with the development’s theme: "Living Re-Imagined.”

“We are doing this to inspire our residents and future homeowners to contribute to preserving our environment,” Celis said. “We believe that even seemingly small ways such as these will have greater impact if everyone adopts the habit of upcycling waste materials into something useful again.”

Each team was provided transportation to the site and P3,000 for raw materials.

Sharp Calculators launched the search for Ten Outstanding Young Mathematicians

‪The Search for Ten Outstanding Young Mathematicians has been launched recently and is open to all public and private high school students in the National Capitol Region. The Sharp TOYM has been announced at the media launched held at the Makati Shangrila Hotel last Friday, September 12, 2014, hosted by Atom Araullo.

The importance of mathematics has never been greater than now and for the foreseeable future and is crucial for a wide array of analytical, technological, scientific, and economic applications.

The search for Ten Outstanding Young Mathematicians seeks to promote the development of science culture among young Filipinos by recognizing their accomplishment in the field of mathematics and inspire more students to be better at Math.

Six years ago, Sharp Calculators through Collins International Trading Corporation launched the SHARP Minds Program to help uplift the standard of education in the Philippines particularly in teaching Math subjects.

Partnering with two of the biggest Mathematics organizations in the country, Mathematics Trainers Guild, Philippines (MTG) and Mathematics Teachers Association of the Philippines (MTAP), the SHARP Minds Program sponsored Mathematics activities and programs in member schools with the goal of recognizing the sharpest math minds and transforming the pedagogy of mathematics teaching in the Philippines.

This year, Sharp Calculators furthers its advocacy by partnering with more educational institutions such as the Department of Education-National Capital Region (DepEd-NCR), Department of Science and Technology-Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI), Mathematics Trainers’ Guild Philippines (MTG), Mathematical Society of the Philippines (MSP), Philippine Council of Mathematics Educators, Inc. (MathTEd) as it launches the very first search for the TEN OUSTANDING YOUNG MATHEMATICIANS (TOYM) from National Capital Region.

“With TOYM Awards, Sharp Calculators aims to foster the academic excellence of the Filipino Youth in Math as we recognize their extraordinary math skills to motivate them further in becoming the future think tanks of this country. We also hope to raise the status of mathematics in society -- to stimulate the interest of the students, the academic and the general public to the significance of Math in the development of the society,” said Collins International Trading Corporation’s Assistant Vice President Mr. Lucero Ong.

“Notable Filipino mathematicians such as Raymundo Favila, Casimiro del Rosario, Gregorio Y. Zara, Amador Muriel, Tito A. Mijares and Jose A. Marasigan have all been recognized for their contributions to diverse fields of physics, astronomy, biophysics and biotechnology. Who knows maybe the next great Mathematician would be among our TOYM awardees,” Mr. Ong added.

The search is open to all public and private high school students in the National Capital Region who have completed at least two years of high school. They must be Filipino citizens, either naturalized or born. The nominee must be among the Top 3 students in math as certified by the school principal and the award will be based primarily on the nominee’s performance on national and international competitions.

A recommendation from School principal / Mathematics head with supporting documents will be the basis of judging. For students who are chosen to the top 20, each involvement on activities included in the recommendation of the principal/math head or other recognized authority will be reviewed and assessed by judges/co-presenters. The said recommendations will be the basis of the judges’ questions for the panel interview.

The Deliberation/ Final interview of finalist will be conducted by representatives from Department of Education NCR, DOST-SEI, MTG Philippines, MSP, MathTed

The TOYM awardees will be the first batch of Sharp Calculators’ Youth Ambassadors that will inspire and encourage the Filipino youth to strive and achieve academic excellence through school tours and mathematics symposiums. They will be receiving plaque of excellence, cash prizes and gifts from Sharp Calculators and sponsors.

The deadline for nominations will be on January 5, 2015, with the awarding ceremonies scheduled on February 2015.
