Helen Mirren Gives a Nuanced Performance as Controversial Historical Figure Golda Meir in ‘Golda’

In Golda, Helen Mirren portrays controversial Israeli leader Golda Meir as neither hero nor villain, but as a complex leader who made difficult decisions under extraordinary circumstances.

A riveting thriller, Golda is a must-see for history buffs and fans of political dramas. Transporting audiences to the heart of the Yom Kippur War in 1973, it recounts a period marked by intense conflict and uncertainty for Israel. Over the course of 19 nail-biting days, Prime Minister Golda Meir, portrayed with gritty determination by Helen Mirren, finds herself at the epicenter of a crisis that threatens the very existence of her nation.

With the shadow of Israel's total annihilation looming, Meir must outmaneuver her doubtful cabinet and navigate a complex web of international relations, particularly with the enigmatic US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger (Liev Schreiber). As the clock ticks down, Meir's unwavering leadership and deep compassion are put to the ultimate test, with millions of lives hanging in the balance. Golda is a story of resilience, strategy, and the heavy burden of leadership, leaving viewers to ponder the controversial legacy of one of the world's most formidable political figures.

On portraying such a complex and divisive figure on screen, Helen Mirren told BBC News:  "All I'm doing is playing Golda during the period of the Yom Kippur War. I'm not explaining her, rationalizing her, or reappraising her. I'm just playing a woman of that age dealing with that situation.”

Meanwhile, director Guy Nativ says that this film explores Meir's complicated legacy instead of simply hailing her as a hero: “I was raised with a narrative that we were stronger, more powerful, and that we won. Golda Meir was a hero. However, what I learned throughout my adult years is that it's not the case. It was a dreadful war; we lost almost 3000 soldiers. There was a big failure with a lot of units. Within this, I found Meir to be a fascinating character, very complicated. Aside from a TV movie in the 1980s, no one had tackled her character in such depth.”

Witness Helen Mirren delivers a powerhouse performance as Golda Meir in Golda, premiering exclusively on Lionsgate Play this March 8.

       Directed by: Guy Nattiv

       Screenplay by: Nicholas Martin

Cast: Helen Mirren, Camille Cottin, Ellie Piercy, Rami Heuberger, Lior Ashkenazi, Liev Schreiber, Dominic Mafham, Ed Stoppard, Henry Goodman

Producers: Michael Kuhn, Jane Hooks, Nicholas Martin

Exec. Producers: Louise Nathanson, Anna Vincent, Celine Rattray

Official synopsis:
Golda, a ticking-clock thriller sharing the intensely dramatic events, high-stake responsibilities, and controversial decisions that Meir – also known as the ‘Iron Lady of Israel’ – faced during the Yom Kippur War in 1973. Her actions, in impossible circumstances, would ultimately decide the fate of millions of lives.

“Miss Probinsyana" presents the power to realize one’s dream

As a popular adage says, “A dream is a wish that your heart makes.” To realize any dream, believing and wishing are only the beginning. Courage, connection, determination, know-how, passion and timing are the needed factors to bring a dream to fruition.

All these and more are highlighted in Jenny Pearl Ninalga’s first commercial movie, When the world met “Miss Probinsyana ”.
“Miss Probinsyana” is a heartfelt drama that chronicles the courageous journey of Marge, given life by actress Rhian Ramos, a determined young woman from the province, and her supportive partner Wil, portrayed by actor Sid Lucero, a seafarer turned web developer, as they navigate the trials and triumphs of entrepreneurship, love, and personal growth in the face of adversity.

Drawing from her own experience as the daughter of an OFW (Overseas Filipino Worker), Marge embarks on a transformative path to create change in her province.

Set against the backdrop of a rapidly evolving digital landscape, the film explores Marge’s pursuit of empowering her fellow Filipinos through the world of Information and Communication Technology (ICT).
With unwavering determination, she establishes her own BPO (Business Process Outsourcing) company in the province, defying the notion that success can only be found in urban centers.

As Marge’s BPO venture grows, she becomes a beacon of hope for her community, proving that meaningful employment and career opportunities can thrive outside metropolitan areas.

Her story intertwines with the parallel narratives of Sarah (Kristel Luistro), a young girl yearning for education and a brighter future; Jade (Kristine Abbey), a reluctant daughter pressured to follow her, both of whom represent the struggles and aspirations of their respective journeys.

As Marge builds her own BPO business in her hometown, she encounters various obstacles, including financial setbacks, doubts, and the stigma associated with being a female entrepreneur.

With unwavering determination and the support of her loved ones, she perseveres and ultimately triumphs, proving that resilience and tenacity can overcome even the toughest challenges.

“Miss Probinsyana is more than just a film; it is a celebration of the indomitable spirit of Filipina women and a testament to the power of education, technology, and community empowerment in driving positive change. Through Marge’s inspiring journey, audiences are encouraged to reflect on the importance of equal opportunities, women’s empowerment, and the transformative impact of education and innovation in building a brighter future for all,” said Director Jenny Pearl Bautista-Ninalga.

The empowered woman who happens to be the movie’s inspiration, Miss Marjorie Aviso declares: “It is very easy to get caught up into the day to day of life especially when you are pursuing your dreams and purpose against all odds, but seeing my life flashback and walk me though the journey is a totally different level - a profound perspective indeed. I have not only appreciated more but really learned that everything happens for a reason that only God has plans for. I have always asked myself if my story is even worth telling, for I know there are a lot more life stories deserved to be told. But this film is truly a testament that you do not have to be great to make a difference in this world. I am eternally grateful to Direk JP, staff and crew for creating such a masterpiece and I am grateful to my team at Telework PH for this milestone.”

The artistic and production team of “Miss Probinsyana ” are screenplay writers Eligio Ninalga Jr and JP Ninalga. Director of Photography Logie Ninalga. Executive Producers:Marjorie Aviso, Lyn Baynosa/ Production by Impact Media Convergence Inc. Presented by: Global Impact Productions Inc. Music by Jonaf Del Fierro and M2arje/

The Triple F Gold Standard Rated movie (given by F-Rated Organization, an internationally acknowledged film ratings body), “Miss Probinsyana ” will have a special screening, on the 6th of March, at the historic Metropolitan Theater as it takes part in the celebration of the International Women’s Month.

“Ang Pag-ibig, Walang Kapintasan,” song for a child with down syndrome

Luis Harder and daughter Adeline Lois.

A family man raising his beloved daughter with down syndrome wrote and recorded a song that essentially captures the key themes in the community of families braving the same challenges.

The digital single “Ang Pag-ibig, Walang Kapintasan,” was released last November and sung by Luis Harder, a musically inclined professional who is the current president of Down Syndrome Association of the Philippines, Inc. (DSAPI).

The song was released on digital stores in time for the 13th birthday of the singer's daughter Adeline Lois.

Harder shared, “I recall playing the guitar one time when all of sudden, a four-chord song came out of thin air. The composition was able to summarize my experiences as a parent and express the depth of the emotions I have for my daughter.”

The singing family man, who is also the CEO-President of Wings Technology Enterprise Inc., initially searched for someone else to sing his composition until the song's record producer and arranger Aubrey Alamani convinced him to interpret it himself.
The singing CEO-President of Wings Technology Enterprise Inc.

“Ang Pag-ibig, Walang Kapintasan” has now taken the shape of an anthem for families raising children with special needs. It is deemed a relatable ballad that definitely strikes a chord with Persons With Disabilities (PWDs). Its Tagalog lyrics reach out to those who wholly understand the challenges of having a child with special needs.

The 64-year old Harder, who is also the cousin of actress Carmi Martin, used to go around as a bar-hopping folk singer in Metro Manila, as well as in cities like Baguio and Dagupan. He could sing, play the bass guitar, and write songs, poised to deliver when inspiration strikes.

The multi-faceted talent who likewise does creative photography noted, “Literally my world turned into mere black, white, and gray when we found out our daughter’s condition."

Harder acknowledges his wife Sannie's role in the raising of their daughter. He added, "God has opened new windows and doors and we started realizing something good is coming out of our situation. Pakiramdam kong merong kanta that needed to be written down.”

At some point he became a worship leader wherein his musicality was put to great use. He even won in a songwriting tilt with a piece he penned called “Isang Katauhan.”

On why he didn't push becoming a recording artist at an earlier age, he pointed out, “I really like playing music and singing. But I had to pursue other things in life like finishing studies, going to business, and raising a family.”

Down Syndrome Consciousness month
Harder, president of Down Syndrome Association of the Philippines, Inc. (DSAPI), is an inspiring presence as singer-songwriter behind “Ang Pag-ibig, Walang Kapintasan.”

The release of “Ang Pag-ibig, Walang Kapintasan” now serves as a tuneful backdrop to the National Down Syndrome Consciousness Month currently being observed in this month of February.

On Wednesday (February 21), a down syndrome awareness conference dubbed “Happy Talk (Usapang Down Syndrome)” will take place 9 am to 3 pm at the Meeting Room A & B in Megatrade Hall, SM Megamall, Mandaluyong City.

Luis Harder himself is scheduled to have a live studio interview at Radyo Pilipinas Manila 738 khz with Ven Blones on the program “Usap-usapan.”

Then come March 24, Happy Walk takes place at Halls 1 and 2, SMX Convention Center Manila.

Notably, DSAPI is being honored as the year's Apolinario Mabini Organization for Persons with Disabilities. DSAPI has for years carried out its mission to provide awareness of down syndrome and help families dealing with it live meaningful lives.

The 22nd DSAPI Gold CUP dubbed "Tee-Up for Down" was held at Tagaytay Midlands Golf and Country Club last February 2.

According to Harder, DSAPI has been taking the lead in this effort since 1992 through volunteers, mostly parents of persons with down syndrome. He related, "Several activities are lined-up. If you have a child, a friend or know someone who may have Down Syndrome, we invite you to get in touch with the DSAPI Office at +63-2 8895-9642 or through their facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/downsyndromeassociationofthephilippinesinc."

The multifaceted talent and family man with Sannie and their kids.

The singing executive intends to continue producing music for noble causes. He related, “As president of DSAPI, I had talked with parents like me and Sannie who have a child with down syndrome. Alam ko ang sentiments nila at iisa lang ang pintig ng puso namin."

He added, "My song also goes to other children with down syndrome, and to other children with special needs, whether they belong to Filipino families or from different nationalities. If parents get to sing this song for their children, then the purpose is well-served.”

SB19’s Josh Cullen drops official remix of “Get Right,” featuring Filipino rapper Yuridope

P-Pop star Josh Cullen joins forces with Filipino rapper Yuridope for the official remix of “Get Right.”

Instantly hitting it off with undeniable chemistry, the duo rocked the remix with an insatiable drive to flip the beat, get the verses turned up, and deliver a performance that is equally compelling as the original.

“I’ve been eyeing a remix for 'Get Right' with a local artist, and boom, Yuridope pops up,” the lead rapper and vocalist of SB19 reveals. “The dude is not just talented; he is genuine. And that verse of his? It was like he blinked and boom, and it was done. Literal na naglabada lang. (He literally washed it out).”

The remix treatment serves as a collaborative effort with multi-talented producer Cursebox, who brought a reinvigorating spin to the source material and helped Josh realize his vision. The result is an inter-genre tweak that pushes the envelope forward as far as production is concerned.

Josh recounts, “Cursebox deconstructed the beat, experimenting with sounds and rhythms to breathe new life into the track. Throughout the process, we provided feedback, ensuring the arrangement aligned with our vision. In the end, Cursebox's unique touch added depth to the song, elevating it to new heights while respecting its roots."

Serving as a gateway to bridge the gap between hip-hop enthusiasts and his captured market, the reimagining of “Get Right” provides an exciting opportunity to introduce new elements to the music while also inviting fans from different genres to experience Josh’s sound in a fresh light.

Josh adds, “This collaboration opens doors to new connections and possibilities, enriching our musical journey and expanding our reach. And with this remix, we're kicking off a larger journey, pioneering a unique sub-genre I'd like to call ‘hip-pop,’ which promises to bring even more innovation and excitement to the music scene.”

“Get Right” finds the SB19 rapper and vocalist embracing his music journey while navigating the challenges of making a dent in a highly competitive industry as a solo act. The original version was written and helmed by Josh Cullen himself, with collaborators Ocho the Bullet and UK-based indie icon No Rome assisting with the production.

Josh Cullen and Yuridope’s remix of “Get Right” is out now on all digital music platforms worldwide via Sony Music Entertainment.

Pop Superstar Dua Lipa releases her new single “Training Season

Dua Lipa fans rejoice! After teasing the new single on social media, and giving a powerful performance of it at the Grammys, the pop superstar has finally released “Training Season” – complete with a dance-inducing music video!

A new era for Dua

Earlier this month, Dua kicked off the 66th Annual GRAMMY Awards with an electric medley performance of “Training Season,” “Dance The Night,” and “Houdini.” She’s also set to perform at the BRIT Awards on March 2nd, where she’s nominated for three awards – Artist of the Year, Best Pop Act, and Song of the Year for “Dance The Night.”

Her comeback has given listeners a taste of her distinct sound, but with a new-found confidence and more spunk. “Training Season” is the perfect example of this, which is all about embracing her singlehood and dating life without feeling any pressure of finding the ‘right’ one.

Speaking of the track, Dua shared, “I had been on a string of bad dates, and the last one was the final straw. The next morning, I arrived at the studio to Caroline [Ailin] and Tobias [Jesso Jr.] asking me how it went, and I immediately declared ‘Training season is over.’ And like the best ‘day after’ debriefs with your mates, we had a lot of laughs and it all quickly came together from there.”

With lyrics such as “Are you somebody who can go there? 'Cause I don't wanna have to show ya. If that ain't you, then let me know, yeah. 'Cause training season's over,” Dua sends a message to her listeners about knowing her worth. This relatable message, together with an electrifying dance beat, guarantees another can’t-be-missed track from the singer.

“While it is obviously about that feeling when you are just absolutely done telling people – men specifically in this case – how to date you right, it is also about my training season being over, and me growing with every experience. I have never felt more confident, clear, or empowered,” Dua added.

Fans have also received another treat along with this release – the official “Training Season” video, which captures Dua’s sentiments perfectly. It opens with her voicemail being flooded with apologetic messages and second chance requests. As the song continues, Dua sits alone while she’s surrounded by men vying for her attention, and the room begins to spin into chaos. It’s the perfect balance of fun, bold, and edgy.

A highly anticipated release

Filipino fans have eagerly awaited the release of “Training Season,” which comes as no surprise since the country has Dua’s largest fanbase in Asia-Pacific. In fact, the Philippines boasts of aggressive streaming and fanbase growth for Dua compared to the rest of Asia. Through the years since her initial rise in 2017, the pop star's streaming volume in the country has far outpaced her streaming volume across Asia - even compared to Indonesia, which has nearly double the Philippines’ Spotify users.

Dua’s legacy in the Philippines is undeniable, and was established primarily due to her success with songs such as “New Rules,” "Don't Start Now,” “Levitating,” “Dance The Night,” and “Houdini.”

Back-to-back hits

Dua’s certified platinum sophomore album Future Nostalgia solidified her position as both a critical success and top radio performer. The GRAMMY-nominated record was the longest running top 10 album by a female artist on the Billboard 200 in 2021, and spawned multiple worldwide hit singles, with “Levitating” earning certified diamond status and the title of Billboard’s No. 1 Hot 100 Song of 2021.

Last November, Dua returned with the euphoric club-ready track “Houdini,” which went straight to No. 1 on the UK Airplay charts and drew in over 12 million YouTube views within 24 hours, and garnered immediate praise across the board – from Rolling Stone and Billboard, who said the track is “an immediate blast,” to Pitchfork and Vogue, who called it “a pop masterclass.”

“Houdini” followed Dua’s hit song “Dance The Night” from the box office sensation Barbie, which landed on the Oscars shortlist and earned nominations at the Golden Globes, Critics Choice Awards, and the GRAMMYs.

With “Training Season” joining the roster, Dua continues to prove that her journey as a global pop superstar is far from over.

They go into concerns such as the price of upgrading to smart devices and whether they contribute to a higher electric bill. It’s informative for those who are considering but haven’t taken the plunge just yet.

On the 2023 year-ender episode, all three main hosts come together to wrap up all the smart tech in 2023 and look forward to the innovations 2024 will bring. They go into their favorite smart device picks, such as the Steam Deck OLED, the Meta Quest 3 VR headset, and the eufyCam 3, to name a few.
