FWD supports financial inclusion with comprehensive health protection portfolio

FWD Life Insurance (“FWD”) supports financial inclusion to cover the underserved sector of society who are vulnerable to critical illnesses through its comprehensive yet affordable health and wellbeing portfolio, which includes Vibrant Critical Illness Insurance, BIG 3 Critical Illness Insurance, and Set for Health Critical Illness Insurance. The portfolio covers costs of hospitalization, recovery from illness, and disease management, offering different premium tiers for customers from diverse financial situations.

“We continue to innovate our products so we can contribute in closing the protection gap, making everyone from all walks of life get the protection they need,” said FWD PH Chief Marketing and Digital Business Officer Roche Vandenberghe. “With these health protection plans, we’re changing the way people feel about insurance by encouraging them to invest in their health because they can now afford it.”

Being diagnosed with critical illness can be the beginning of financial concern for patients and their families. Open heart surgery alone, for example, may cost at least Php300,000 in a public hospital, depending on the disease and its severity. Given the grave risks posed by common critical illnesses, FWD took a proactive approach to help people prioritize their health and wellbeing through insurance protection. Filipinos now have access to comprehensive health protection that covers all bases while empowering them to celebrate living.

The Vibrant Critical Illness Insurance offers up to six times the claims for major critical illness, three times maximum claims for cancer and non-cancer respectively. It covers the insured from wellness to recovery, including proper health screening and maintenance, coverage from critical illnesses, and a supplement benefit for treatment and recovery. It also offers maturity or death benefit and minor critical illness benefit, among others. The plan allows consumers to customize their policy as necessary with protection boosters.

The BIG 3 Critical Illness Insurance is an easy-on-the-pocket, easy-to-buy, and easy-to-claim health plan that protects against the top three critical illnesses: stroke, heart attack, and early-to-late-stage cancer. It provides high protection at minimum cost, alleviating Filipinos’ health-related financial concerns. At an affordable premium, customers can buy up to a maximum of Php 2 million total aggregated health benefit amount. They may also take advantage of the reward of unlimited consultation with licensed physicians at Aventus Medical Inc. clinics nationwide. The BIG 3 Critical Illness Insurance is available via the FWD Online Shop at shop.fwd.com.ph.

The Set for Health Critical Illness Insurance, which covers 42 major critical illnesses and allows up to three times the claims for unrelated major critical illnesses. Dubbed as the zero-waste health plan, Set for Health guarantees that the insured gets a return from all premiums paid as it offers up to three times the claims for major critical illnesses, and 100% refund of the premiums paid if they never make a claim. Additionally, dependents get 100% of the benefit amount should the insured pass away before age 75. This plan is available via reaching out to a financial advisor or the FWD Online Shop, and it offers flexible payment options so customers can pay under their preferred terms.

Important financial decisions require help from professionals. Customers can talk to FWD’s financial advisors to seek expert advice on which plans they need, depending on their background and life plans. FWD launches “The One” to offer customizable coverage for Filipinos across multiple generations

FWD Life Insurance (“FWD”) launches FWD The One, a customizable coverage plan to meet the lifestyle and financial needs of multiple generations of Filipinos, from Gen Z to 70 years old.

Easily accessible online, FWD The One reflects the current generation’s definition of what finding ‘the one’ means for them: a perfect partner; a lifelong passion; an advocacy; or, a personal goal. FWD designed the product to be flexible for different life stages and to support customers’ evolving digital habits. This makes FWD The One customizable, with benefits that will serve as the ideal lifelong insurance for different generations.
Roche Vandenberghe, FWD Chief Marketing and Digital Business Officer

“Gen Zers are living their lives very differently to those of previous generations – this means there is no longer a one size fits all model for addressing people’s financial needs across their lifetimes. As an innovative, caring and different insurer, we’re also aware that older generations need access to coverage that meets their specific needs. To support our vision of changing the way people feel about insurance, we designed FWD The One to be digitally accessible, affordable, and customizable to help Filipinos across generations get the protection they need with ease and confidence,” said FWD Chief Marketing and Digital Business Officer, Roche Vandenberghe.

FWD The One is available to Filipinos aged 18 to 70 who are legal residents of the Philippines for at least six months, with no medical tests required during application. It’s easy to buy through FWD’s online shop, with the starting premium as low as Php 330, based on the customer’s age, budget and protection needs. Customers can customize their plan and add coverage on top of life insurance, such as coverage against 42 major critical illnesses and accidental death benefit. For those who want a higher benefit amount, they can reach out directly to FWD financial advisors.
FWD The One Media Event on January 31, 2PM - 4PM at Bloom Cafe + Bar 2 Greenbelt Dr, Makati, Metro Manila.

This latest innovative product comes with four options:

The One for Life, which offers death benefit; The One for Life and Critical Illness, which provides a combination of both death and critical illness benefits; The One for Life and Accident, which bundles death benefit with accidental death benefit; and The One for Life, Accident, and Critical Illness, which covers all three benefits.

The death benefit is renewable until age 99, while the accidental death and critical illness benefits are renewable until the insured reaches 79 years old. Upon purchase of FWD The One insurance plan, customers will be rewarded with a cup of coffee redeemable within 20 days.

“FWD The One is really for everyone, whether you’re just starting your career or already planning for retirement. You can create your own The One so you can celebrate living with no limitations,” said Roche.

Journalist and now entrepreneur and farmer Ces Oreňa-Drilon: ‘It’s really passion that moves you forward.’

Ces Oreňa-Drilon has never met a story she wasn’t passionate about pursuing or a challenge she didn’t face head-on with a positive spirit.
Ces Drilon leaves her comfort zone to try new things like digital, farming, \
and starting her own business.

When the former reporter and Bandila anchor lost her job when ABS-CBN’s franchise was not renewed at the height of the pandemic in 2020, Ces turned to farming and entrepreneurship to sustain her. Out of the newsroom, she also explored digital platforms to reach her audiences.

Ces, who was also former Content Acquisition Head of ABS-CBN Lifestyle Ecosystem Group, says, “Leaving the anchor’s chair was my own decision because I wanted to leave my comfort zone and try new things like digital. So, I took the plunge and tried my hand at livestreaming. I was very nervous at first because I was communicating to a younger audience, which I was not used to. But to my surprise it became one of the best things I did during the pandemic. I was so happy, and my fear of having dead air and talking to 20-year-olds was unfounded. It was also a new way of generating income during the pandemic.”

The award-winning broadcast journalist who, for over 30 years, was on our TV sets chasing hard news and feature stories found that there was a whole new world away from the newsroom. It may be a cliché but it’s true that when a door closes, a window opens.

For Ces, it was becoming an entrepreneur, content creator, and a farmer. She founded and launched Provenciana, which produces smudge sticks or bundles of dried herbs that you burn to produce a cleansing cloud of smoke for positive energy; soaps; and other natural home products.

“I learned to adapt and try new things because the road to success is never a straight line. For me the secret to success is enjoying what you do, and also to savor life’s little pleasures. Don’t forget to celebrate living.”

How Ces Drilon manifested her dreams

Ces began her journalism career in 1984. As a rookie reporter, she had to work long hours and be very diligent about the stories she was assigned to do to build credibility.

“I love the craft. I love the challenge of being able to combine words and video, and being able to distil a very complicated issue into two minutes.”

In the end, she says, all this paid off. “It’s really the passion that moves you forward because the job of being a field reporter is very demanding. If you begin early, you reap the benefits of what you sow. Your commitment, your dedication will bear fruit as a reporter, and consistency is key. In the beginning, I was open to a lot of opportunities and challenges without being so conscious about the pay knowing that payback would come later. Alam niyo, success doesn’t come overnight but over time.”

She took new challenges and explored new ground as she worked her way up the newsroom. “Learning new things and new skills is so fulfilling. And it’s good to leave one’s comfort zone.”
Ces Drilon believes FWD Life Insurance’s Manifest, an investment-linked insurance,
is a wise plan to have.

Like many women, she successfully balanced a demanding career with her other role as a single parent to four young boys. This pushed her to think long and hard about her financial wellbeing.

“I started investing when I was a reporter. I bought insurance for myself and for my kids because I wanted to protect my family. When you have protection, you can take calculated risks with the hope of earning bigger returns. You know, after I lost my job of over 30 years, pivoting to a new venture like Provenciana was easier because I was financially prepared and had a back-up plan. Sound financial planning will grow and protect what you’ve built.”

For that she believes FWD Life Insurance’s Manifest, an investment-linked insurance, is a wise plan to have. “FWD Manifest gives you strong life protection and smart wealth investment. And because it has protection and investment components, you can manifest your dreams with more confidence and less worries,” she says.

Knowing that she’s protected and her family is secure also gives her the courage to venture and expand her new life as an entrepreneur.

“I will be giving greater focus to farming this second half of 2022 aside from growing all the things that Provenciana needs. I want to eventually live there (in the farm). The aim is really to be able to go back to basics and to tap the healing and nurturing properties of Philippine endemic plants.”

To Ces, success is being able to build something that will outlast her. “Success also means leaving the world a better place than when you found it. So, I dedicate this to my children.”

“I manifested my dreams and I know you can, too. Invest and manifest your future with FWD Manifest.”

Human-centered, tech-driven strategy define FWD’s future of work

FWD Life Insurance
is equipping its employees with an app built in-house complemented by a new human-centered office design in its head office in BGC, Taguig. This is the latest FWD Anywhere initiative, which embraces different styles of working and is aligned with FWD’s global Group Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) strategy of harnessing value in its people’s talents.

“Our people are what make us a vibrant and dynamic workplace. The pandemic gave us an opportunity to further our efforts on celebrating their unique strengths and explore innovative solutions to create an environment where everyone can do their best work while boosting their health and wellbeing,” says FWD Life Insurance President and CEO Li Hao Zhuang.

Workspace Plus

FWD’s exclusive work management app called Workspace+ was the result of an evaluation of the employees’ needs as the world moves toward the next normal. The Insurer’s hybrid work arrangement is the future of work that offers its employees greater flexibility.

FWD employees have the choice to work from the office 50% of the time, and they are given the freedom to work from anywhere for the remaining half. Employees use the app to agree with their managers and teams in advance of their work schedule, reserve work desks and parking spaces at the office building. They confirm their reservation simply by scanning the QR code in the app to check in – all to provide a positive experience in the tech-enabled hybrid work setup.

Vita Marie Guillen, FWD’s Chief People and Culture Officer, says that FWD’s key priority is the wellbeing of its employees. “We care about our employees’ overall health. It’s part of our DNA and it defines how we work. By giving them these tools, we enable them to efficiently plan their schedule in the office, balance quality time at home, and afford them the opportunity of sustainable behavioral change,” Vita affirms.

FWD has been implementing a “work from anywhere” policy since 2018. Initially designed to help ease employees’ daily traffic and commuting woes when the pandemic lockdowns and quarantine protocols were implemented by the government, all FWD needed to do was enhance its hybrid work plan and fully enforce it into the future of work.

Human-centered workplace

FWD refurbished its BGC head office in a way that enhances employee experience, focusing on building a collaborative, supportive and respectful environment, and giving priority to employees’ physical, mental and social wellbeing.

They are given the best seats right by the floor-to-ceiling windows and corner spots where natural light streams and a spectacular view of the bustling city can be seen.

The new office is generous with space to promote social distancing, at the same time encouraging employees to move around freely and be physically active, including the option of standing work desks. The pantry is big enough to double as a huddle area. Collaborative areas are conducive not just for brainstorming sessions but socializing as well.

Creativity and innovation pervade the atmosphere. The state-of-the art media studio is designed to allow FWD creators to produce valuable, quality content for its customers. The orange brand color dominates the entire office to fuel passion, vibrance and dynamism among the employees. Greenery and trellises in the Innovation area add to the inspiring work atmosphere. Meeting rooms have been assigned names after popular Filipino festivals such as ‘Ati-atihan’, ‘Sinulog’ and ‘Dinagyang’ not only to promote local culture but to also reaffirm the company’s tagline: Celebrate living.

“We intend to celebrate diversity and innovation in the way we work toward the next normal with a motivated workforce who will continue changing the way people feel about insurance,” concludes Li Hao.

Self-love your way to joyful wellbeing

This Valentine’s Month should be different from your past Valentine’s celebrations. More than romantic love, the value of self-love should be your priority so you can develop joyful wellbeing even beyond February. Having gone through the challenges of this pandemic, you know you deserve it. So celebrate you by embracing self-love.

It doesn’t have to involve one grand gesture or indulgence, but instead try a variety of actions that will ultimately turn into habit – acts that will support your physical, social, financial, mental and emotional wellbeing. At the ‘Be the Stronger Better You in 2022 with FWD’ event, acclaimed physician Dr. Ging Zamora aptly said, “Total wellbeing is a work in progress, and deciding to be in a state of joy is an exercise we must strive to do as often as we possibly can.”

Financial self-love

FWD Life Insurance suggests making a long-term financial investment that covers your future needs as a form of self-love. Invest in an insurance plan that allows you to grow your money and at the same time protect yourself and your loved ones from any possible setbacks in the future. One that will give yourself the capacity to prepare for possible medical emergencies. FWD has Set for Health, KanMend and Health Bundle that may just be the right fit for you.

“We want to encourage more people to practice self-love by investing on their health and wellbeing. What we have to offer goes beyond illness coverage so our customers can celebrate living in their best health,” says Li Hao Zhuang, president and CEO of FWD. “When you are confident that you have yourself covered, you will find it easier to accomplish more and do all the things that you love.”

To help celebrate you and start your financial self-love, FWD is giving you a chance to win prizes. For those who are already going through your own self-love journey to build your overall health and wellbeing, share how you practice them on FWD’s social media accounts to possibly win prizes like Garmin smartwatch and wellness weekend for two at The Farm at San Benito. And since the Year of The Tiger starts on Valentine month, FWD will also give you a chance to win more gifts by simply booking a free financial planning session until February 15. With campaigns like these, FWD is on track to changing the way people feel about insurance.

Physical self-love

It has been proven that regular exercise and proper nutrition are the best ways to achieve optimum physical health. Those “happy hormones” released after a good workout can definitely make you feel good. The best part of having an exercise routine is that it allows you to eat your favorite comfort food without guilt. Indulge now, burn calories later, so they say.

If you’re not really into hardcore exercise and strict diets, you can give yourself some physical self-love through a soothing massage every now and then, morning walks with your dog, or simply a relaxing shower. When you feel great physically, your mental and emotional state follows.

Mental and emotional self-love

We all have different ways of coping with stress and anxiety, but you can take control of your mental and emotional health by practicing self-love. Some find meditation helpful, others listen to music or certain auditory stimulants, while others find comfort in reading books. Take a social media break, go hiking for some change of scenery and fresh air, or “disappear” for a while in a solitary place of your choice if you have to.

It’s all about clearing the mind, filtering out any form of external noise, and listening to yourself to determine what makes you feel good and happy. Once you learn how to recognize your own feelings and reach your best mental and emotional health, you’ll find yourself wanting to go out again and have a blast with your friends and family.

Social self-love

Self-love can lead to selfless love. When you focus on taking care of yourself, you go through a state of overall good health and wellbeing that you grow your capability to love others and actually want to share a bit of yourself.

You find joy in the company of others, so you make time for your family and friends even if it’s only through a virtual activity. You volunteer to social causes because you have developed the passion to serve. You love discovering new things, so you join a group of like-minded people to satisfy your interests. It's okay to do something for or with others just to make yourself feel good. If it means more people will benefit from the things you do out of self-love, then the world will be a better place.

Whatever you do this Tiger Year beginning on Valentine Month, remember to celebrate you first. After all, the best way to feel the joy of wellbeing is through self-love. Winston Maxino and daughter Brina live with disabilities, yet they continue to prove that they can live life to its best. Through it all, they choose to be stronger for each other so they can continue to celebrate living.

“Brina inspires me to live on and enjoy life. She is my source of strength; seeing her achieve so much despite her condition. It tells us that one’s capabilities are what will eventually define a person. Disability is no hindrance to success,” Winston opens up.

Remarkable resilience

The pandemic helped Winston and Brina realize the importance of patience, social connectivity and family. Brina has found a new love for Zumba dancing, while Winston is rediscovering videography, photography and some magic tricks (he was once a member of International Magicians’ Club). They also bond over movies and board games with the family. During their own time, father and daughter are busy with their respective work: Winston as a Management Consultant, and Brina as a pre-school Assistant Teacher.

It’s remarkable how father and daughter are able to find ways to enjoy life even through tough times. You’d find it hard to believe that Winston has a rare and incurable disease called Ankylosing Spondylitis, a condition in which the spine and other areas of the body become inflamed1, while Brina is living with Down Syndrome. These disabilities, however, never slowed them down. They simply know where to find the strength they need to live productively.

“Prayers, a lot of prayers. Acceptance of my condition and having the strong belief that tomorrow will be a better day,” Winston says when asked about where he gets his strength. Brina, on the other hand, counts on her parents to get her through any difficulty. “Relax first. Then ask for help from your parents. They know what to do,” she affirms.

Future secure

Winston wants Brina to continue living a fulfilling life so he made sure that she is all set to cover uncertainties in the future.

“We are doing our best to make Brina as independent as possible, both emotionally and financially. She is now gainfully employed. She has her own money to spend. We continue to build her trust fund to finance her living in the future even when we are gone,” Winston affirms.

To add to his peace of mind, Winston takes comfort in the fact that Brina is covered with FWD Life Insurance’s two insurance products that provide her and her loved ones with life protection. At the same time, she also has the opportunity to earn from investment funds as well. This way, she can focus more on her dreams and live her life to the fullest amidst any kind of challenges.

Stronger than disabilities

Brina describes it best when asked what to do when faced with a difficult situation: “Always believe in yourself…Just keep on trying.” As a Special Olympics’ International Global Messenger, Brina says she also gets her confidence from the global movement’s “Athlete Oath”: ‘Let me win; but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.”

And believe, she does. At 25, Brina has achieved more than what was expected of her. She finished three college courses: certificate for General Clerical Skills, diploma for Associate in Arts, and degree for AB History. Just like her dad, she is also an inspirational speaker. She was the lone Person with Disability chosen as United Nations’ UNESCO Global Champion for Inclusive Education. She has already shaken the hand of former US President Barack Obama. She is also a model, and acted as herself in Magpakailanman’s episode, “My Beautiful Daughter: The Maxino Family Story”.

At the rate she’s going, one may think that Brina can already rest on her laurels. The young lady, however, still has dreams to fulfill. “I would like to be an entrepreneur. I want to have my own grocery store or own my own school,” Brina shares. She further reveals that she gets her confidence from her dad, whom she also considers her best friend.

To this day, Winston is still amazed at how much Brina has accomplished and marvels at how much more she can do. Brina admires everything her dad does and together they are a formidable force proving that no disability is greater than their capabilities.

Invest and manifest: why you must act on your dreams now

The future still holds so much potential despite the pandemic, especially when you know how to manifest your dreams in life and follow through with long-term investments. All you need is the guidance of experts to show you how you can make this work so you can turn your manifestations into reality.

There are now VULs (Variable Universal Life plans) that not only give you the opportunity to get reliable investments but provide you with life protection as well. However, not all VULs are designed in the same way.

Take, for example, FWD Life Insurance’s latest product, FWD Manifest. It is the first insurance product that protects and rewards you for investing more for a longer period to boost your wealth-building. It has the benefits a good VUL can offer such as life protection, investment opportunities in diverse global and local funds, accidental death benefit, customized protection booster and premium waiver.

For quick reference, here are four unique features that FWD Manifest has to offer:
  • · Start-up Bonus – gets up to 30% of the basic annual premium on the first policy year to be added on the 5th and 10th year of the plan
  • · Premium Extension Bonus – gets 2% bonus if you decide to extend your premium payment after the required period
  • · Investment Protector Bonus – protects your stock market investments in case the Philippine Stock Exchange Composite Index price goes lower than its original price five years ago.
  • · Guaranteed Milestone Increase – gives you a one-time pre-approved 20% benefit amount increase up to PhP2M. All they have to do to get this bonus is to choose which milestone in life they would want to celebrate, e.g. a wedding in five years, a house in ten, or perhaps retirement in 30 years
“We all have dreams in life that can come true only if we support them with action, and that’s the purpose of FWD Manifest. We hope to empower people to invest in what matters to them the most so they can celebrate living and stay strong especially during uncertain times,” said FWD Life Insurance President and CEO Li Hao Zhuang.

With life protection and financial health now packaged into one product (and with bonuses at that), you can confidently claim success right now from your manifested dreams. FWD Manifest makes it doable.

Share with us your dream and the steps you’re taking to manifest it through our #ManifestMyDream contest on Instagram! Visit https://www.fwd.com.ph/manifest/ and discover the best way you can invest and manifest your future.
