Huawei: building up digital ecosystems to promote economy

[Bangkok, Thailand, September 19, 2022] HUAWEI CONNECT 2022, Huawei's 7th annual flagship event for the global ICT industry, began on Monday in Bangkok. Huawei brought industry leaders, experts, and partners from around the world together to explore how to more effectively unleash digital productivity.

Initiatives to help all industries go digital

Ken Hu, Huawei's Rotating Chairman, delivered a keynote outlining three ways the ICT ecosystem can help break through common barriers in digital transformation:

**   Boost digital infrastructure, including more robust connectivity and stronger, more diverse computing resources.

**   Help organizations go beyond simple cloud adoption and truly make the most of cloud, focusing on advanced technology services that drive leapfrog development.

**   Build out local digital ecosystems, including partner development, strengthening the digital talent pool, and providing more support for SMEs.
Ken Hu, Rotating Chairman at Huawei, speaking at
HUAWEI CONNECT 2022

GDP growth has been unstable over the past two years. However, the digital economy has seen consistent growth on a global scale – more than 15% in 2021. This has prompted many organizations to transform their operations and service offerings with next-generation digital technology.

"Going digital is clearly the right choice," said Hu. "The demand is there, and so are the technologies. The world is unleashing digital productivity, and it's happening right now."

H.E. David Almirol, Usec of DICT in the Philippines, speaking at
HUAWEI CONNECT 2022

H.E. David Almirol, Undersecretary of Department of Information and Communications Technology in the Philippines, gave a speech during the event. He stated, “the Philippines are bringing and launching government cloud soon. Not only to unify what we have but to build more government cloud services in the country and the government cannot do it without a very good partner. We need to unify whatever we have and we need to ask for help from a lot of private entities. So our main intention is to find ways to build a foundation to invite everyone to build on top of that foundation, so that the government will become an enabler to everyone."

Building out local ecosystems for shared success

At the event, Huawei reinforced its commitment to open collaboration and shared success. The company called for governments and enterprises to work more closely together to cultivate local digital ecosystems that build up innovation partners, strengthen the talent pool, and support startups.

Simon Lin, the President of Huawei Asia-Pacific Region, released the Digital First Economy whitepaper that delves into targeted policy suggestions for digital infrastructure construction and digital economy development in the Asia-Pacific region.

"The Asia-Pacific region is standing at the forefront of the global digital landscape," said Lin. "Huawei is committed to becoming a key contributor to the digital economy in the region. We will keep supporting its digitalization and sustainable development efforts, and building out the industry ecosystem." “As countries in the region are empowering ICT talents to boost digital economy, Huawei will keep strengthening the talent ecosystem through leadership, skill, and knowledge.”

Speaking from the perspective of a tech provider, Mr. Jeff Wang, President of Huawei Public Affairs and Communications said: “Connecting people and building the next generation of talent is more important than ever for driving forward digital transformation. For more than 20 years, we’ve worked closely with our partners in Asia Pacific to provide Internet access to the unconnected. Meanwhile, we are on track to meet our goal of training 500,000 ICT talents in the region by 2026.”

New Huawei Cloud Region in Indonesia, and 15+ new services

How will HONOR conquer the Filipino market while stepping out of Huawei’s shadows?

HONOR promises to provide an interconnected world to the Filipino market with new software experience, smartphones, laptops, tablets, and other IoT products backed by its own Research and Development Facility.

Since HONOR’s independence and official comeback to the Philippines, the consumer global technology brand revealed their future product line ups and their own Research and Development facility. The separation led the brand to invest more on its technology without losing the learnings they gained as a former sub-brand. HONOR was formerly owned by Huawei except for the smartphone business.

With Huawei’s standards and the support of Google, HONOR is expected to seamlessly deliver feature-packed consumer devices.

Ecosystem with Google Mobile Services
Consumers are significantly questioning the presence of Google Mobile Services given the remarkable similarities of Huawei and HONOR products. Google’s absence has made HONOR and Huawei phones less recommendable to countries who use Google Apps the most. The Philippines is no exception to that, with almost 90% of smartphone users in the country using Android devices according to a Statista measurement.

Last October 2021, HONOR launched globally the first smartphone with GMS, the HONOR 50, which helped the brand to be strongly placed as the third-biggest smartphone seller in China.

All smartphone line ups of HONOR from its low to mid-range up to its flagship foldables are equipped with Google Apps and services.

Turning to the devices, HONOR X series, HONOR 70, and HONOR Magic Series are the smartphone line ups that the Filipino market is eyeing to grab in Q4 2022.

HONOR’s rise to the top

An IDC report in Q2 2022 showed that HONOR is now the top mobile smartphone brand in China with a 19.5% market share, up 88.6% from the same period last year, and 8.8% from the previous quarter.

The brand’s overall positioning in many categories helped achieve its dominance with the new HONOR 70 series, according to IDC, “helped to sustain its high growth.” The budget-friendly Changwan 30 series and Play 6 series also met the needs of the entry-level segment, while the Magic 4 series also allowed Honor to strengthen its share in the >US$600 high-end segment.

On building a fresh and separate identity

HONOR recently revealed its first self-funded factory demonstrating excellence to manufacture high-quality premium products.
Automated Arm at the HONOR Intelligent Manufacturing Industrial Park

“The opening of the HONOR Intelligent Manufacturing Industrial Park was a significant milestone of our success in integrating our R&D capabilities into our manufacturing processes. The consolidation allows us to better harness our expertise across both fields,” said George Zhao, CEO of HONOR Device Co, Ltd. “In addition to bolstering our manufacturing capacities, the smart manufacturing facility houses world-class production, testing and quality control equipment that ensures our premium products live up to our customers’ high expectations.”

Automation, digitalization, and intelligent technology serve as the cornerstones underpinning the Park’s core manufacturing capabilities. The Park operates with 75 percent of its production line automated, minimizing the risk of human error. Additionally, more than 40 percent of the automated production equipment is developed in-house, which serves as further evidence of the tight integration between R&D and manufacturing capabilities at the Park.

All key equipment in the production facility supports digital control systems, allowing HONOR to better manage the entire production line and reap better efficiency as well as improve product quality.

Attracting world-class talent with world-class challenges, and innovating nonstop for a greener intelligent world

[Shenzhen, China] Huawei kicked off its 19th annual Global Analyst Summit in Shenzhen. Huawei's Rotating Chairman Ken Hu said that the company will continue to boost investment in innovation to build new products and enhance and accelerate new technologies.

Ken Hu, gave a keynote on Huawei's approach to innovation and building a greener intelligent world. "At Huawei, when we talk about innovation, the first thing we think is people. We hope to attract world-class talent with world-class challenges, and work together to push the limits of science and technology," said Hu, referring to the Top Minds recruitment program that the company launched on its website yesterday.

"We don't care where you’re from, where you graduated, or what you studied,” he continued. “As long as you have a dream for the future and believe you can make it happen, we want you to come and join us. We provide world-class challenges, a powerful platform, and all the resources you need to explore the unknown."
Ken Hu, Huawei's Rotating Chairman, speaking at HAS 2022

Hu went on to discuss the specific initiatives that Huawei is working on to realize its vision for the future. "We are currently focusing on three areas: strengthening our approach to innovation, equipping all industries with the tools and knowledge they need to go digital, and helping build a low-carbon world."

The following is a summary of these three initiatives.

Innovating nonstop and advancing the industry:
  • In terms of connectivity, Huawei continues to drive the industry forward. The company announced its vision to enable 10 Gbps connections everywhere with 5.5G and F5.5G, the next evolutions in wireless and fixed networks. Together, these will support a broader range of niche network requirements, including a more immersive experience in homes as well as the low latency and high reliability needed for industrial control scenarios.
  • In terms of computing, Huawei is redefining system architectures for individual nodes, foundational software, and data centers in an effort to significantly increase system performance and energy efficiency.
  • In cloud services, Huawei is building MetaStudio, a cloud-based, end-to-end digital content pipeline that will greatly expedite digital content production.
  • In terms of devices, Huawei aims to provide consumers with a user-centric intelligent experience in all aspects of their lives – what the company calls a Seamless AI Life experience – effectively accelerating the convergence of the physical and digital worlds.
Diving into digital transformation to create new value for customers:
  • Huawei is adapting its products and product portfolios to different industrial scenarios. At the same time, it will start pre-integrating and pre-verifying products, doing all the complex work beforehand to make digital transformation easier for its customers and partners. With Huawei Cloud as the foundation, Huawei aims to provide "Everything as a Service", turning infrastructure, technology, and expertise into cloud-based services, and making cloud migration easier for customers in different industries.
  • Huawei is also building integrated teams that focus on specific industries, bringing a specialized group of experts closer to customers' business challenges and more tightly incorporating horizontal resources, i.e., products and capabilities from partners. The goal is to provide targeted digital transformation solutions for each industry and respond more rapidly to customer needs.
Optimizing power supply and consumption with digital technology to enable low-carbon development:
  • Huawei is redefining the PV sector with AI, cloud, and other capabilities to boost the generation of renewable energy.
  • Huawei is also developing system-level low-carbon solutions for green ICT infrastructure, focusing on wireless base stations and data centers.
Moving forward, Huawei is taking active steps to boost its business resilience and ensure steady development. "We have to keep the ball rolling through nonstop innovation, creating value for customers and society," said Ken Hu. "We look forward to working more closely with our customers and partners to build a greener intelligent world."

In addition to its innovation strategy, Huawei also shared its far-reaching vision for the future and some of the exploration it's doing to get there. Dr. Zhou Hong, President of Huawei's Institute of Strategic Research, said that "everything we imagine today is very likely to be too conservative – too little – for tomorrow. We have to meet the future with bold hypotheses and a bold vision, and throw caution to the wind as we push to break through bottlenecks in theory and technology. This is the only way forward."

Here in the Philippines, Huawei also had several programs for cultivating the local ICT talents, such as ICT Academy, Seeds for the Future, covered the Philippines for years, benefited over 9000 ICT students, according to Daniel Guo, the Vice President of Huawei Philippines.

In the event, Dr. Zhou outlined ten challenges that Huawei hopes to address moving forward.

Two scientific questions:
  • How do machines perceive the world, and can we build models that teach machines how to understand the world?
  • How can we better understand the physiological mechanisms of the human body, including how the eight systems of the body work, as well as human intent and intelligence?
Eight tech challenges:
  • New sensing and control capabilities, e.g., brain-computer interfaces, muscle-computer interfaces, 3D displays, virtual touch, virtual smell, and virtual tast
  • Real-time, unobtrusive blood pressure, blood sugar, and heart monitoring, and strong AI-assisted discoveries in chemical pharmaceuticals, biopharmaceuticals, and vaccines
  • Application-centric, efficient, automated, and intelligent software for greater value and better experience
  • Reaching and circumventing Shannon's limit to enable efficient, high-performance connectivity both regionally and globally
  • Adaptive and efficient computing models, non-Von Neumann architectures, unconventional components, and explainable and debuggable AI
  • Inventing new molecules, catalysts, and components with intelligent computing
  • Developing new processes that surpass CMOS, cost less, and are more efficient
  • Safe, efficient energy conversion and storage, as well as on-demand service

Huawei debuts digital solutions at MWC2022 to empower APAC green development

[Barcelona, Spain, March 1, 2022] At the MWC2022 in Barcelona, Huawei releases their GUIDE business blueprint and innovative solutions focusing on digitalization and carbon neutrality for the future of ICT. The global leading provider of ICT infrastructure and smart devices vows at the online media roundtable on Monday to empower the green and sustainable future of digital economy in the Asia Pacific region.

Existing theories and architectures are unable to support explosive growth in digital demand.

Forecasts show that over 50% of global GDP will be digitalized in 2022. As the global digital economy develops rapidly, the demand for digital products and services has exceeded expectations. Huawei's Rotating Chairman Guo Ping explained that as Shannon's theorem and the von Neumann architecture continue hitting severe bottlenecks, the industry must explore new theories and architectures to reshape the technological paradigm to achieve digital sustainability.

Huawei has been upholding the concept of "make technology and nature live together", and has continued to invest in reducing carbon emissions, increasing the use of renewable energy, promoting circular economy, and guarding nature with technology. Huawei is committed to integrating digital technology and power electronics to promote the energy revolution, accelerate the digitization of energy, enable industrial upgrading in thousands of industries, and become an enabler of carbon emission reduction.

By creating synergies between IT and CT, cloud and edge, and cloud and networks, Huawei hopes to help operators go digital and intelligent and achieve new revenue growth. In Asia Pacific, for example, Huawei's OneStorage solution has helped one operator cut TCO by 30%.

Carbon reduction impacts the long-term vitality of the digital economy.

On carbon neutrality, Guo said, "Connectivity density and computing power determine the strength of the digital economy, but it should also maintain long-term vitality. So, we need to consider a new dimension, carbon reduction."

Huawei currently adheres to a "More Bits, Less Watts" strategy in this area. In addition to improving its fundamental digital capabilities, Huawei has committed to making its products 2.7 times more energy efficient by making breakthroughs in areas like theories, materials, and algorithms. Huawei's third-generation Massive MIMO products fully utilize the multi-antenna technology to improve energy efficiency by 30% compared with peer products.

As part of its efforts to create a greener and more sustainable digital world, Huawei will increase investment in sustainable green solutions, leveraging clean power generation, electric transportation, and smart energy storage, to support the Asia Pacific region’s goals of cutting carbon emissions, promoting renewable energy, and contributing to a circular economy, according to Jay Chen, Vice President of Huawei Asia Pacific. Through advances like these, the ICT industry is able to help other industries reduce their own carbon footprints.

According to AlphaBeta, a Singapore-based strategic economic consultancy that works with governments, businesses, investors, and other institutions, their report shows that a technology-driven economy could assist in mitigating the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and recovering the country’s economic losses.

The report states that if fully leveraged by 2030, the country can foster a digital economy that can raise PHP 5 trillion or 101 million US dollars in economic value by 2030. This is equivalent to 27% of the country’s GDP in 2020 alone.

“In Asia Pacific, for Asia Pacific’ is our commitment. At Huawei, we are working closely with carriers and partners from around the world to explore solutions that help make life better, businesses smarter, and society more inclusive. We'd also love to share how our ICT technology is helping make the world a greener, more sustainable place. Together, we can light up the future," said Jay Chen.

To support the digital ecosystem in Asia Pacific, Huawei in 2021 has announced that it will invest $50 million to develop 500,000 digital talents for Asia Pacific in the next 5 years, and invest USD 100 million over three years to cultivate the startup ecosystem in the region, including in the Philippines.

MWC22 Barcelona runs from February 28 to March 3 in Barcelona, Spain. Huawei showcases its products and solutions at stand 1H50 in Fira Gran Via Hall 1. Together with global operators, industry professionals, and opinion leaders, we dive into topics such as industry trends, GUIDE to the Future, and green development to envision the future of digital networks. PLDT, Smart unlock amazing digital experiences powered by PH’s fastest network

Leading digital services providers PLDT, Inc. and Smart Communications unlock the future with new innovative products and services powered by the country's fastest fixed and mobile networks. In the photo: PLDT and Smart Chairman and CEO Manuel V. Pangilinan leads the celebratory toast with PLDT and Smart executives and partners from ABS-CBN, Cignal, ESPN 5, Google, Huawei, iflix, NBA, Oppo, Samsung, StarMobile, and Roku.

Fresh from their latest recognition as the Philippine’s fastest fixed and mobile networks, leading digital services provider PLDT Inc. and its mobile arm Smart Communications are ushering in a new wave of innovative products & services that aim to unlock amazing experiences for Filipinos whether they are in the comfort of their home or on the go.

PLDT and Smart presented their latest products at a powerhouse event aptly themed ‘Unlock the Future’ and graced by executives, endorsers, celebrities, and partners in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig.

“Over the past years, we’ve been hard at work to future-proof our network and beef up our digital content and product partners. We’re delighted to present our most exciting services that are designed to meet the ever-evolving needs of Filipinos,” said Oscar A. Reyes, Jr., PLDT and Smart SVP and Consumer Business Market Development Head.

“Backed by our fastest networks, these innovative solutions will elevate the way our customers enjoy digital devices, services, and content. As we get ready to close 2018 and prepare for a new year ahead, we will continue our groundbreaking work to help empower Filipinos to enjoy an amazing life,” said Andrew L. Santos, PLDT-Smart FVP and Consumer Marketing Head.

Unlocking an amazing life for Filipinos

To establish even stronger connections at home, PLDT has introduced the new PLDT Home Fibr Google Wifi Plans, which feature a whole home wifi network system that puts an end to dead spots and ensures strong and Fibr-fast connection in every corner of your home.

New PLDT Home customers can now subscribe to Google Wifi Plan 3799, which comes with an unlimited 50Mbps connection, three Google Wifi points, and free service assistance from the Home Geek Squad. On the other hand, existing PLDT Home Fibr customers can simply avail of Google Wifi units as an add-on for Php799 per month for a set of three.

PLDT is also unlocking a new entertainment experience at home with the upcoming launch of the new PLDT Home TVolution Lite that is powered by Roku®. The new service features a plug-and-play device that allows customers to easily and effortlessly watch trending videos on YouTube; their favorite HD channels from Cignal; Top Hollywood, Asian and local movies and TV series from iflix; critically-acclaimed Netflix originals and films, and hundreds of free streaming channels on their TV.

Following their support for the much celebrated Esports and Gaming Summit 2018 and the recently concluded ‘Road to the Nationals,’ which awarded the country’s top DOTA 2 and Tekken 7 players, PLDT and Smart also affirmed their commitment to deliver the best gaming experience for Filipino gamers powered by PLDT Home Fibr, the fastest Fibr connection for lag-free gaming at home, and Smart LTE, the fastest LTE network for gaming on-the-go.

Unlocking bigger and more rewarding experiences

On the other hand, buoyed by the massive success of its Free YouTube campaign, which more than doubled the daily active YouTube users on its network and drove over 13 times more data usage traffic from customers, Smart has stepped up to unlock total entertainment with Video Every Day.

A new promo that comes with all of Smart’s GigaSurf data packages, Video Every Day provides customers with up to 1 hour of Video access daily for YouTube, iflix, iWant TV, Cignal Play and NBA League Pass - for as long as their GigaSurf subscription is valid. Smart customers can now register to GigaSurf with Video Every Day by simply dialing *121# or via the mySmart app.

Apart from these services, Smart has also announced game-changing partnerships with popular smartphone manufacturers Oppo, Samsung, and Starmobile to encourage more Filipinos to upgrade to LTE-capable handsets that come with special discounts and freebies.

Among these special LTE-capable handsets are the OPPO A71 Smart LTE phone kit, which is now available for Php5,998 (from the original SRP of Php6,990); the Samsung J2 Core Smart LTE Phone Kit priced at Php4,990 (from Php5,990); and Starmobile Play Click TNT LTE phone kit, which is very affordable at Php2,998 (from Php3,490).

To offer a much bigger digital experience, Smart also continues to strengthen its portfolio of the latest flagship devices with the data-packed GigaX Plans, which feature separate data allocations for streaming videos, as well as enjoying apps and surfing websites.

Smart offers the newly launched Huawei Mate 20 with the GigaX Plans at Php2199 per month, and the Huawei Mate 20 Pro at Php2,599 per month.

Smart also makes it easier for customers to get hold of the latest iPhones, starting with the iPhone XS at Php3,299 per month, and the iPhone XS Max at Php3,599 per month. The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 is also available with the Smart GigaX Plans.

Finally, in celebration of its 25th anniversary, Smart announced its biggest anniversary e-raffle promo in the company’s history, which gives customers a chance to win data packages, MVP Rewards points, LTE smartphones every month, leading up to the grand raffle on February 25, 2019 in which one lucky subscriber will win Php25 million cash! To join, subscribers need only to register to select data promos and add-ons.

Twin awards for the country’s fastest network

Earlier this year, PLDT and Smart were cited for being the country’s fastest fixed and mobile networks for Q1-Q2 2018, respectively, by Ookla®, the global leader in internet testing and analysis.

Just recently, independent mobile analytics company OpenSignal also cited Smart for providing its customers the best video experience in the country. The UK-based firm has published an independent analysis of the customer experience for video services by telecom carriers in Asia, showing that Smart garnered a video experience score of 42.2, well ahead of competition in the Philippines and well above the national average.

OpenSignal also recognized Smart earlier this year for having the country’s fastest LTE network, awarding the company with four citations including best in 4G LTE download speed; best in overall download speed; best 4G latency performance; and best 3G latency performance in its March 2018 report.
