GSK Philippines rallies women to put on their power pout against cervical cancer

Women empowerment is having positive thinking on the ability to make change, power of enduring or bearing pain, hardships or stress and the strength to continue life to last.

Life will never the same after you hear the "C" word - Cancer. Every woman is at risk. There are women who have survived cervical cancer and have decided to share their stories not only to help empower themselves and move past cervical cancer, but educate and empower other women who might be going through similar situations.

Cervical cancer is a major problem for Filipino women: it is the second leading cause of cancer deaths among Filipinas, with seven dying of the dreaded disease every single day. What’s more worrying is that two in three Filipinas diagnosed with cervical cancer may die within five years. Cervical cancer is a risk for women regardless of race, age, lifestyle or socio-economic status.

Cervical cancer occurs when abnormal cells develop and spread in the cervix, the entrance between the vagina and the uterus. The human papillomavirus (HPV), a very common virus, is the necessary cause of cervical cancer. It has been shown that 99.7 percent of cervical cancer patients are positive for HPV infection. It is also estimated that up to 80 percent of women will be infected with HPV at some point in their lives.

While HPV is primarily transmitted via sexual intercourse, skin-to-skin genital contact is also a recognized mode of transmission.

Lifestyle changes can help prevent the development of cervical cancer, such as being conscientious about one’s sexual activities. Beyond regular consultations and pap smears by your OB-GYN, vaccines that protect against cancer-causing HPV are also now readily available.

A risk regardless of age

Based on a study of 307 women in Ontario, the incidence of cancer-causing HPV infection is actually highest at the young ages of 15-19. The World Health Organization Strategic Advisory Group of Experts (WHO-SAGE) on Immunization reiterates the importance of getting young girls protected through HPV immunization before their first exposure to HPV (i.e. before sexual contact), as young as 9 years old.

What about older women? The risk of persistent infection with cancer-causing HPV (which is necessary for cervical cancer to develop) increases with age, and is highest when a woman is over 66 years old. Thus, screening is recommended starting age 21 to detect cervical abnormalities that precede actual cervical cancer. Vaccination remains to be recommended for older women to prevent new HPV infections.

Power Over Cervical Cancer

Leading research-based pharmaceutical company GSK continues to ramp up its cervical cancer awareness efforts this year with the patient—the woman—always in mind. In the Philippines, the Power Over Cervical Cancer campaign urges Filipinas to realize that they are empowered—that they can do something to prevent the disease from happening to them, so they don’t miss out on a colorful life ahead or leave their loved ones behind.

Purple lips against cervical cancer

In commemoration of Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, GSK Philippines launched its partnership with cosmetics manufacturer VMV Hypoallergenics at a press event entitled Put On Your Power Pout!, held last May 28th at Makati Shangri-La Hotel.

The partnership introduces a twist on spreading awareness: encouraging women to join the movement by wearing purple lipstick to show their support for the advocacy on cervical cancer prevention.

“Cancer is quite a distant concept for women who are well. What might be more important to them is keeping up with the latest trends, especially in fashion and beauty. The lipstick is a woman’s own—when she wears it, she makes a statement about herself. Through this partnership with VMV, we hope to drive women to make a statement against cervical cancer,” says Mark Castillo, GSK product manager.

Jacklyn Remo, assistant marketing manager for VMV Hypoallergenics, supports the movement:

“We are fully committed toward this partnership with GSK Philippines. At VMV Hypoallergenics, we promise the safest, most proven effective care on the planet—and that extends to beauty. This unique combination of science, wellness and beauty means we also strongly stand for advocacies that help women, their health and happiness.”

So take care of yourself. Take care of daughters. Talk to your female friends, colleagues, family members. Vaccination is available. Vaccinating young girls can help reduce rates of cervical cancer in the future. We can protect our daughters by vaccinating them now.

With the complete home theatre systems available at Sony, we are giving families more reason to stay at home and enjoy quality time together,” said Allet Velves, Head, Home Entertainment System, Sony Philippines.

Designing the family room can be a challenge for everyone, most especially when it comes to setting-up the home entertainment system that you and your family need. Most people usually find it difficult if the space is small and there are just too many wires used to connect the television to the player and speakers. Sony has what consumers need when it comes to designing the family room with its complete home entertainment systems and current line of sound bar products.

Flexible to use and place anywhere at home, Sony’s sound bar speakers are packed with features that complement the signature superior sound quality that only Sony is able to reproduce.

Consumers always demand for great sound quality and unlike other sound bars, we at Sony focus on products that deliver an immersive true home theatre experience that is easy-to-setup and enjoy,” said Nobuyoshi Otake, President and Managing Director, Sony Philippines.

For condo dwellers, match the size of your family room or living space with a home theatre system that allows you to maximize space but still provide you with the aesthetics that complement the look of your home. Choose a sound system that will best fit the space; sound bars are a good option when you want to lessen the clutter.

The Sony sound bar delivers powerful sound despite its size and position in the room. With numerous speakers and sound systems available in the market today, it is good to know what can actually deliver and provide the best sound quality that will fit your family needs.

Packing powerful sounds in a small body, Sony brings its HT-ST7 sound bar speaker, one of its first entries into the premium sound bar category as well as its HT-CT370, Sony’s entry-level sound bar that both provide high quality audio and immersive cinematic experience.

Pipelining Sustainability by Neltex, showcase their precise state-of-the-art, health-safe pipes, joints and seals at the Worldbex 2015

Neltex Development Co. Inc., the biggest PVC Pipe Manufacturer in the Philippines with the state of the art plant, showcase their precise state-of-the-art, durable and reliable, 100% leak-free, yet environmentally-friendly and health-safe pipes, joints and seals, during the biggest construction show exhibit last March 14- 15, 2015 at Worlbex, World Trade Center Pasay City, with the theme of “Pipelining Sustainability”.

Neltex is one of the most-visited brands at the Worldbex 2015. Many curious visitors have seen eye-catching exhibit of Neltex.

A transparent presentation and features major parts of the house that points out the important role of pipes.

Neltex offers solutions to major pipeline problems.

One of the most common problems is leakage caused by poor jointing and loose gasket resulting to non-revenue water and system loss. Pipe leak is highly caused by improper pipe fitting due to conventional installation and non-secure working condition.

For this, NELTEX offers the use of its PVC NELTEX PRESSURELINE PIPE with machine-installed fixed seal solution that leaves no margin for error.

Major infrastructures constructed decades ago can no longer adapt to climate and environmental changes. Floods and waste water still go through reinforced concrete pipes that are corroded by the hydrogen sulfide present in waste water. These should be changed to the chemically-resistant PVC PIPES of NELTEX.

Road construction is often slowed down due to pipe laying of reinforced concrete pipes. Concrete pipes are only one meter in length and heavy. Jointing these pipes are tedious and could be inaccurate, thus difficult to form long, straight pipes. With concrete pipes jointed in unevent slopes, water could not flow as fast as in smoothly straight pipes, and clogging often occurs.

NELTEX suggests the use of flexible, lightweight, six-meter long PVC NELTEX SEWERGUARD PIPE with SEWERLOCK SEAL that ensures fast installation and less jointing.

Urbanization requires that electrical cables should be contained in pipes and installed underground. Since electrical pipes are installed beside water pipes, it is a must for these pipes to be highly durable, non-corrosive, water tight and air tight. NELTEX meets these requirements with its impact modified PVC POWERGUARD PIPES joined together by means of a fixed seal technology called the POWERLOCK that renders the pipes to be 100% waterproof and air tight.

Climate change and urbanization have certainly affected the requirements expected form the pipeline industry.

Typhoons, averaging 20 times per year, and storm surges cause heavy flooding in thoroughfares and these put unnecessary pressure on water pipes and underground electrical pipes. Environmental wastes seep through the sewers at accelerated speeds and amounts as a result of the ever increasing population. Seemingly endless road construction and repairs that bring about heavy traffic in the metropolis and suburbs have become part of our daily lives. Then, there are also skyscrapers, buildings and houses sprouting like mushrooms almost everywhere.

Without a doubt, much is expected from Neltex. Neltex Development Corporation never stops to develop pipes that respond to the needs of the times because a pipe, after all, is an important component of life in the modern society.

To know more about this, check the NELTEX website at www.neltex.com.

Asia's biggest superstar Lee Min Ho in "Gangnam Blues"

Korean's  biggest superstar Lee Min Ho now proves that he is more than just a pretty face in "Gangnam Blues." In an action and drama role, something that fans used to loving him in romance comedy and action roles will be pleasantly surprised to see — and love Min-ho all the more.

Lee Min Ho is a superstar in the hearts of Filipino fans, with his hit Koreanovelas like Boys Over Flowers (2009), the breakthrough tele-drama that won him several awards including Best New Actor at the 45th Baeksang Arts Awards; City Hunter (2011) for which he was honored as Most Popular Actor at the 48th Baeksang Arts Awards and Outstanding Korean Actor at the 7th Seoul International Drama Awards; The Heirs (2013) for which he earned a nomination for Most Popular Actor at the 50th Baeksang Arts Awards; and Faith, which recently aired on ABS-CBN. He has released two albums, My Everything in 2013 and Song For You in 2014.
]

Gangnam Blues, directed by the iconic Yoo Ha, is the third part of his Gangnam Trilogy. The stories of these movies revolve around Gangnam, the street and the youth.

In Gangnam, the southern part of Seoul, during the height of political corruption, Gangnam Blues is an action "gangster noir" that tells the story of different political organization's clash. The movie has been described as a "gangster noir" set in the 1970s, when Seoul’s Gangnam district was still under development and “political powers and darker organizations collide as they seek to grab control of the influential and exclusive area. During the 70s, Gangnam was being transformed from a vast agricultural area into the modern hub that it is now.

Min-ho and co-star Kim Rae-won play orphans in a slum area, growing up like brothers. When their homes are bulldozed, they get separated, only to meet again years later as heads of rival gangs hired by powerful groups fighting over dominance of Gangnam.

It has scenes reminiscent of Coppola’s The Godfather. Watch this different movie this Wednesday, March 4, released in Tagalized version by Viva Films.

The movie is directed by Yoo Ha. Lee Min Ho plays the character of Kim Jong Dae, who gets caught up in the power struggles and ends up in a battle against his childhood friend and he treated as his brother Yong Ki, played by Kim Rae Won.

We heard this classic hit over and over again, Freddie Aguilar’s OPM classic “Anak” was used in the trailer of Korean superstar Lee Min Ho’s latest movie Gangnam 1970,” which was also titled “Gangnam Blues.”

Anak is played whole twice (the original version), first in the series of scenes showing Min-ho and his gang demolishing their rivals with a haul of bullets) and in the end as the credits roll.

SineAsia Theater is the first Asian tagalized theatre in the country and Lee Min Ho’s Gangnam Blues film is the official grand attraction for the theater’s grand launch and it's red carpet premiere this Tuesday,  March 3 held at the SM Megamall.

The theatre will have an exterior that will show the authenticity of the oriental flicks to be played on the big-screen. The movie will be dedicated to the viewing of never-before-seen, premiere and commercial Asian films.

These films will be “tagalized” for audience to have easier viewing plus the Filipino family will be provide different movie platforms that are exclusively SM Cinema and Walter Mart Cinemas.

SMLEI reinvents one dedicated theater in 8 of its SM Cinema branches to make way for SineAsia Theater. Among the chosen malls are SM Megamall, SM Sta. Mesa, SM Fairview, SM Ilo-ilo, SM Bacoor, SM Cebu, SM Manila, and SM North Edsa.

Pro Earth Run 2015: Run the Race for Mother Earth

In its Global Climate Risk Index 2015, Germanwatch listed the Philippines as one of the countries most affected by extreme weather events in 2013.

It also reconfirmed that "less developed countries are generally more affected [by extreme weather] than industrialized countries, and forewarned that “if mitigation efforts are not immediately taken, the world will continue heading down the path towards dangerous climate change.”

Is it a downward spiral from here? Prayerfully, NO.

“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step,” said Chinese Philosopher Lao-tzu. So is the race to protect, respect, and oversee care for Mother Earth.

To increase awareness on environmental responsibility and raise funds for Earth Day Network Philippines' continuing projects and programs, do join the PRO Earth Run on 25 April 2015, 4:30AM, Mall of Asia Grounds, Pasay City. To register, simply click the link below.

SM City Baguio to install Rainwater Catchment Tanks

Rain is a blessing of nature. Rainwater - good water with unlimited uses.

There are many ways to save water — conservation, passive rainwater catchment, onsite recycling (i.e., greywater) and active rainwater catchment. All of these methods require that you actively manage your water use, as opposed to just paying your bill each month and not thinking about how much water you use.

We use rainwater for a variety of purposes including drinking, washing and irrigation. But, rainwater can be highly polluted and not suitable for use. Still, it is one of our purest sources for water and with the right treatment, it has many uses. When rain falls onto a polluted roadway or roof it becomes contaminated with everything it touches. But before it hits the ground, rainwater is relatively pure. Compared to well water (i.e., groundwater), which is typically very high in minerals, rainwater is cleaner and easier to purify. And unlike the water in lakes and streams (i.e., surface water), rainwater contains no pharmaceuticals, minerals or pollutants.

The Philippines is regularly in the firing line for powerful typhoons.Torrential rains brought the Philippine to a standstill, submerging some areas in waist-deep floodwaters.

Despite its elevated location, Baguio City is susceptible to floods. In 2012, tropical storm Helen left the city submerged, and in 2013, typhoon Labuyo mirrored the devastation brought by its predecessor. More recent atmospheric aberrations tell us that more will come.

Because of its cool climate, Baguio City was designated by the Philippine Commission as the "Summer Capital" of the Philippines. Baguio City, the coolest but also the wettest city, occupies about 57 SQM of hilly land surface in the southwestern portion of the Cordillera region with an average of around 700mm (28in) of rainfall or precipitation during the months of July and August. The wettest and coolest month is August (as with the rest of Luzon)

One of the ways floodwater can be reduced is through the use of rainwater catchment tanks. Apart from lessening the enormous amount of water that can flood households and businesses, there are many uses for stored water, such as irrigation, watering of plants, and other non-potable uses.

SM Malls came up with the idea to convert rain water to something useful through the use of rainwater catchment tanks. SM in Baguio City plans to build a rainwater catchment tank to capture rainwater. After being treated by a sewage treatment plant, the rainwater will be reused by the mall in its operation, instead of sourcing its requirements from the local water district.

This process is already being used with success in SM Masinag in Antipolo and SM BF in Parañaque.

SM details of their new design for the mall redevelopment but hinted the same Green Building Council approved design with energy-efficient lighting and water conservation components will still be utilized. This includes a rain catchment basin to help save run-off water and prevent soil erosion.
SM-SKY-PARK
SM Baguio Sky Park Project: The development plans of SM Baguio, in the context of long-term or sustainable intervention to years of environmental degradation.
Rainwater is one of the advantageous methods of using natural water in a sustainable manner.

Rainwater harvesting system offers sufficient amount of water and energy savings through lower consumption. Moreover, considering the cost for installation and maintenance expenses, the system is effective and economical. Rainwater harvesting is the most traditional and sustainable method, which could be easily used for potable and nonpotable purposes both in residential and commercial buildings.

Rainwater harvesting could be the most sustainable solution to be included in the urban water management system. It could mitigate the water crisis problem, reduce the burden on traditional water sources, alleviate nonpoint source pollutant loads, control water logging problems, prevent flooding, help in controlling climate change impacts, contribute to the storm water management

Capturing rain where it falls or capturing the run off in your own village or town and taking measures to keep that water clean by not allowing polluting activities to take place in the catchment.

Rainwater harvesting suitable for work as well as at home, in schools, hospitals, offices, commercial premises, rainwater can typically be used for toilets, vehicle washing, yard washdown and watering plant pots/gardens.

In general, water harvesting is the activity of direct collection of rainwater. The rainwater collected can be stored for direct use or can be recharged into the groundwater. Rain is the first form of water that we know in the hydrological cycle, hence is a primary source of water for us. Rivers, lakes and groundwater are all secondary sources of water.

In present times, we depend entirely on such secondary sources of water. In the process, it is forgotten that rain is the ultimate source that feeds all these secondary sources and remain ignorant of its value. Water harvesting means to understand the value of rain, and to make optimum use of the rainwater at the place where it falls.

Flawless Healing When Scar's The Limit

Health and beauty are gifts from nature. Beauty from within is essential, but taking care of our outside appearance is also important.

As our skin is what the world sees of us, we all want our skin to look good. If your skin is clear and healthy looking, it makes you feel good about yourself. For most people, effective skin care is actually a pretty simple process.

But having scars makes people very conscious. Scars are unsightly things that should be hidden or removed as much as possible.
Dr. Hector M. Santos, Jr.

Even small injuries can leave unsightly scars. Severe scalding can easily lead to lasting scars. A Caesarean section is a surgical procedure that leaves a scar. pimples are found on the face, neck, back, chest, and shoulders. Acne is not a serious health threat, but it can cause scars.  Acne is the most common skin disease. Even the removal of a birthmark always leaves a wound behind, which can lead to the occurrence of an unsightly scar.

There are emotional and psychological burden experiencing by most people. Scars often have a stronger impact on especially, women.

A whirl of emotions can develop around a scar.

- Uncertainty, fear, anger, hopelessness. Scars can start to restrict daily life and damage confidence.
- Insecurity when the scar is visible to others
- Fear that a fresh scar could become infected
- Anger about the cause of the scar
- Worry about the loss of beauty
- Pain both physical and emotional
- Feelings of guilt about having allowed the injury to happen
- Disgust when seeing or touching the scar
- Sadness about the limits the scar places on everyday life
Dr. Christopher Christian P. Aro / Dr. Jose Joven V. Cruz / Dr. Hector M. Santos, Jr.
Here are the reasons why there are patients who avoid undergoing surgery. Women with scars, particularly, often feel a loss of attractiveness and femininity, associate negative emotions with scars, and feel insecure in their own skin.

Studies have shown that scars can affect a person's physical comfort and functioning, self-acceptance, acceptance by others, social functioning, emotional wellbeing, and confidence in the nature and management of the condition.

When exactly is the right time to start scar treatment? And how long do I have to treat a scar? Early treatment is the best way to prevent scars. Your doctor may suggest over-the-counter (OTC) or prescription drugs. Some acne medicines are put right on the skin. Other medicines are pills that you swallow. The doctor may tell you to use more than one medicine.

For many years, Contractubex has been found to be very effective in treating inauspicious and movement restricting scars.

The gel can be used to treat both recent and old scars caused by a phyical accidents, a burn or scald, an acid burn, a vaccination, acne or operation.

Contractubex is a highly effective treatment for all scar types. It actively promotes the healing process of the skin and reduces scarring from within.

The scar gel with the triple effect:

- Prevents the formation of excessive scar tissue
- Reduces redness, itching and the feeling of tension
- Makes the scar smoother and improves elasticity

For best possible results, start treatment as soon as the wound is closed or the stitches are removed. This ensures that your scar will become so fine that you will hardly see or feel it.

Treatment depends on the scar size, freshness of scar and the conditions of scars etc. Large, hard and old scars may need 3-6 months or even longer treatment. Treatment of scar requries a high degree of persverance and active participation by patient in order to achieve a noticable result.

Every year, over 200 million incisions are made on children and adults worldwide. About 30% of those procedures result in pathologic (hypertrophic or keloidal) scars. If the wound healing is undisturbed, one may end up with a normal "fine line" scar. Unfortunately, alterations in the healing process could result to ugly scarring.

Dr. Gene Gerald San Juan Tiongco / Dr. Hector M. Santos, Jr. /  Ms. J. Ann Mirasol / Dr. Jose Joven V. Cruz / Dr. Christopher Christian P. Aro
Dr. Hector M. Santos, Jr., currently the president of the Phil. Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeon. and his colleagues had the assembly recently held at the Makati Shanrila Hotel. During the talks of Dr. Santos, he said that surgery is only half the battle because patients should continue healing with an effective scar treatment for a successful recovery.

Dr. Santos, Jr., also shared to us during the interview, "scarring could be prevented if a wound is treated at the right time with the right product."

Extract Cepae + Heparin Sodium + Allantoin (Contractubex) has been used to treat scars successfully for over 50 years in over 60 countries. It is regularly recommended by doctors all around the world with its efficacy already proven in numerous clinical studies. Its unique combination of three active ingredients works its way deep into the scar to reduce the mark from within and results to a nearly invisible blemish.
Dr. Hector M. Santos, Jr.
Dr. Santos recommended and stressed that the gel should be applied on a closed and non-infected wound. This is a very effective preventive measure especially for individuals who are prone to developing keloids.

"Start applying about a week after your operation, two to three days after the stitches were removed," he said.

"It is importatnt using Contractubex at the right time," he added. The product is well-tolerated, even when used for long periods, and local adverse reactions are very rare.

Treatment can be started just days after wound closure, or 8-10 days after an operation.

For old and hard scars, it is recommeded that the scar be covered with Contractubex and a bandage overnight to enhance deep prenatration of the active ingredients.

Dr. Santos said that Contractubex could still be applied on old scars as iit could help improve scar appearance but results are not as good as when applied on fresh scars. Contractubex is more than 75% effective in avoiding having itchy red scars.

Regarding big scars, however, they can be surgically removed and treated with Contractubex to greatly improve how they look.

Fresh scars should never be exposed to direct sunlight. The scar formation process is not yet complete, and the sun's rays may adversely affect the sensitive scar tissue while it is forming.

This scar gel can
- reduce the size of scars
- reduce the difference in color between the scar and surrounding skin
- prevent excessive scar tissue formation
