Petron introduces Fiesta Gas refillable LPG cylinder in Luzon

Following its successful launch in the Visayas last year, the new Fiesta Gas 170-gram in refillable cylinders, the latest innovation from industry leader Petron Corporation in the LPG category, will now be available in Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon.
Petron and DOE officials present during the product launch at the Petron service station in Diego Silang C5 - (from left) Petron LPG Metro Area Retail Sales Manager Kristian Paul Dantes, Petron AVP for LPG Business Andrew Tan, Petron VP for Industrial Sales Virgilio Centeno, DOE-Oil Industry Management Bureau (OIMB) Director Rino Abad, DOE Senior Research Specialist Engr. Robert Cardinales, and Petron AVP for Service Station Group Michael Flores.

Designed to be compatible with LPG-rated portable stoves and grillers, the Fiesta Gas 170- gram in refillable cylinders is safe and reliable, as the packaging is made of seamless aluminum alloy that can withstand high pressure, in compliance with Philippine National Standards (PNS).

The new product will make LPG more accessible to homes that still rely on charcoal or firewood or worse, illegally refilled butane canisters for cooking. This reduces exposure to health and safety hazards, while offering a more convenient and budget-friendly cooking fuel option.

In addition to home use, portable stoves and grillers are becoming increasingly popular among outdoor enthusiasts as well as restaurants and food outlets due to their portability and convenience. With a trusted brand like Fiesta Gas offering a safe, refillable cylinder, more users can confidently use the product without fear of gas leaks and fire hazards.

Aside from being a safer and more affordable cooking product, the Fiesta Gas 170-gram in refillable cylinders is also environment-friendly, given its reusable nature. Users would only need to pay for the refill after initial purchase of the product. After consuming the contents, the aluminum alloy refillable cylinders can be returned to authorized Fiesta Gas dealers and retailers to get a filled cylinder in exchange. This ensures that consumers are getting the right product quantity and quality each time.

According to Petron Corporation President and CEO Ramon S. Ang, “Petron is a staunch supporter of the LPG Law that strengthens consumer protection. By offering a convenient, safe, and affordable solution, our new Fiesta Gas 170-gram in refillable cylinders protect Filipino homes from unsafe, substandard, and illegal butane canisters that are extremely dangerous.”
Petron launched the Fiesta Gas 170-gram in refillable cylinders in Luzon—a product engineered to be safe and explosion-proof due to its seamless aluminum alloy packaging.

The new Fiesta Gas product was launched in Luzon in simple ceremonies held last June 21 at the Petron service station on C-5 Diego Silang, Taguig City. In attendance were Petron officials led by VP for Industrial Sales Virgilio Centeno, AVP for LPG Business Andrew Tan, AVP for Service Station Group Michael Flores, and Area Sales Manager for LPG Metro Manila Retail Kristian Paul Dantes. The Department of Energy (DOE) was represented by Director Rino Abad of the DOE-Oil Industry Management Bureau (OIMB) and Engr. Robert Cardinales (Senior Research Specialist) from the DOE-Retail Market Monitoring and Special Concerns Division.

Dir. Abad noted on the potential of the new product during the launch. “It’s very timely that Petron has introduced an alternative product for households that still rely on charcoal or illegally refilled butane canisters. By offering their new product, Petron is raising the bar for other players who would also like to enter the small refillable cylinder business. We hope to see Petron expand its footprint even more and encourage competition,” he said.

PSA: PhilSys, a Pivotal Step Towards Inclusion Through Identity

The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) has reiterated the significance of the Philippine Identification System (PhilSys) in promoting inclusion through fulfilling the right to legal identity of all Filipinos.

The Universal Declaration on Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights state the right to be recognized as a person before the law. The right to legal identity, including registration at birth, is also a key component of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

The PhilSys was signed into law in 2018 to establish a foundational identification system to provide a valid proof of identity for all citizens. It also intends to simplify transactions and serve as a link in the promotion of seamless service delivery.

Through PhilSys, the PSA has registered 78.9 million Filipinos nationwide, with 65 million PhilIDs and ePhilIDs issued including 31.4 million printed PhilIDs and 33.8 million ePhilIDs.

To ensure inclusivity and to bring PhilSys registration closer to Filipinos in far-flung areas, the PSA deployed registration teams to implement mobile registration. Moreover, school-based registrations are also conducted to register school-aged children, parents and communities near schools. The PSA also launched the PhilSys Birth Registration Assistance Project (PBRAP), which aims to help the marginalized in securing their birth registration and assist them in registering to PhilSys.

“The right to identity of every Filipino is recognized and promoted by the PSA, and we continue to enjoin everyone to register to PhilSys to make a socially inclusive society a reality,” said PSA Undersecretary Claire Dennis S. Mapa, National Statistician and Civil Registrar General.

To ensure that Filipinos can immediately access the benefits of being PhilSys-registered, the PSA is working closely with the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) and the Post Office to expedite the production and delivery of PhilIDs.

Parallel to PhilID delivery efforts, the PSA continues to issue ePhilIDs, which can already be used as valid and sufficient proof of identity. PhilSys-registered individuals can visit https://appt.philsys.gov.ph to check if they may already claim their ePhilIDs.

Igloo protects Southeast Asia's multi-billion dollar coffee industry with innovative weather insurance for farmers

Regional insurtech Igloo expands its blockchain-based parametric index insurance to coffee farmers in Southeast Asia, showing commitment to covering more underinsured communities and industries after successful product implementation with rice farmers.

Southeast Asia - a part of what is called the coffee belt - is one of the biggest coffee producers in the world. While Vietnam and Indonesia are responsible for the majority of global coffee output, the Philippines is also an important global producer with industry revenue expected to reach US$6.7 billion in 2023, according to statistics portal Statista. The local market is also expected to grow annually by 5.69% until 2025.

Coffee production is not only a long-term and labor-intensive investment, but it is also one that is constantly under threat of climate hazards which provide difficult growing conditions due to extreme climate–affecting farmers and disrupting supply chains.

“Weather Index Insurance is a product that we introduced in order to protect farmers and communities across Southeast Asia from unforeseen climate hazards. While initially introduced for rice farmers, we’ve seen from its success the product’s scalability to cover other sectors like coffee farms, which is one of the robustly growing segments in the region,” said Mario Berta, Igloo’s Country Manager for the Philippines.

Protecting the coffee industry and its farmers

There are currently several insurance products on the market for coffee farmers. However, they share a common problem of incompatibility with the real, frequent risks faced by coffee farming families. The damage assessment process is also complex and time-consuming, which creates the risk of additional financial hardship for farmers.

The Weather Index Insurance eliminates the need to individually verify claims thereby reducing transaction costs and enabling faster payouts to farmers. This is done by collecting and monitoring rainfall data to calculate claims using pre-assigned values for losses due to natural causes. The business rules governing claims payout being hosted on a public blockchain help leverage the attributes of transparency, consistency, and unbiasedness, thereby making the setup credible.

While Weather Index Insurance is currently available in Vietnam for rice and coffee farmers, Igloo expects to roll out Weather Index Insurance to more countries in Southeast Asia including the Philippines soon.

“The Philippines being an agricultural powerhouse and one that is at a higher risk of suffering from the impacts of climate change, is a country we believe will benefit from having Weather Index Insurance. We are currently working with our partners to make this product available in the country and other markets in the near future. In addition, we are also exploring expanding the product’s coverage to include other indices such as earthquakes,” Mario added.

‘The Final Pitch’ invites entrepreneurs across all industries with the launch of its 9th edition

The ‘Open Edition’ aims to promote inclusivity and democratize access to opportunities for entrepreneurs beyond tech startups

The Final Pitch,  the Philippines' premier business reality TV show, is back for its ninth season on CNN Philippines, with the theme "Open Edition." The new season provides opportunities for aspiring entrepreneurs, innovators, and startups from all industries to present their innovative business solutions catering to a diverse panel of investor-judges looking to fund and back their initiatives.

The show's creator and host, John Aguilar, stated that the Open Edition is poised to be a breakout season for the series as it emphasizes the significance of inclusivity and diversity in the business world, particularly for non-technology startups seeking investment and partnership opportunities and aiming to take their businesses to the next level.

"We have decided to make this an 'Open Edition' to be able to give a chance to entrepreneurs of different sizes, industries, and verticals to be able to participate in both the fundraising, mentoring and market reach that The Final Pitch has been able to give the entrepreneurs who have pitched their enterprises on the show. This is also a way for us to democratize access to everything that show stands for, to go beyond tech startups, which have traditionally been the majority," said Aguilar.

This season's roster of judges also hail from different industries, bringing diverse perspectives and valuable insights to aspiring entrepreneurs. The panel of investor-judges includes Rico Bautista, President and CEO of Etiqa Life & General Assurance Philippines; Brian Poe-Llamanzares, President of Pantheon Holdings; Henry Aguda, President and CEO of UnionDigital Bank and Member-convenor of GoDigital Pilipinas; and Robert Scott, Vice President-Hotel Operations of Okada Manila. For the first time, the show will involve judges from the diplomatic corps with the participation of the Israeli Ambassador to the Philippines His Excellency Ilan Fluss, and the British Ambassador to the Philippines Her Excellency Laure Beaufils. According to Aguilar, the judges will serve as not just potential investors, but as strategic partners to the future contestants.

In a virtual press launch on May 9th, Rico Bautista expressed his desire to collaborate with entrepreneurs who have strategic, feasible, and technological ideas with clear business opportunities.

Bautista stated, "I am personally looking for startups who can help expand our business in Etiqa, especially when it relates to insurance, customer service, and distribution. I am also looking for an entrepreneurial and passionate leader and a strong business team with the ability to combine art with technology. Their passion in starting up and innovating, to come up with something so simple and yet very relevant, both to the market they're playing in and to the company that they will be helping. Lastly, future potential and clear commercial teams resulting in early Return of Investment (ROI).”

According to Brian Poe-Llamanzares, he is seeking business solutions that directly address significant problems in the country and are both usable and accessible to the public.

"As an investor and entrepreneur, I am always on the lookout for innovative solutions that address real problems and benefit the general public. Simultaneously, I am also keen on identifying opportunities that align with our family business at Pantheon Holdings. However, my ultimate belief is investing in the entrepreneurs themselves. In the Philippines, entrepreneurship is the driving force behind many successful companies, particularly at the startup level, and the person behind the venture is what ultimately makes it successful. I am thrilled to engage with entrepreneurs who possess a clear vision of what their company requires to grow and thrive, whether it be a technological solution, marketing assistance, or networking opportunities," expressed Llamanzares.

Expressing his enthusiasm for finding the next big thing in the Philippine startup scene, Henry Aguda said, "Our main focus in UnionDigital Bank is to provide banking service to the under-banked, unbanked and SMEs, that is why we have an open mind coming into this show to find the ‘diamond in the rough’, an SME that will become a unicorn one of these days. My excitement is here also looking for solutions that we can take to the government and be the ones to scale up. Maybe an entrepreneur or a startup can solve a problem that the government is trying to solve and the government becomes the accelerator to make them a unicorn." Aguda is looking for game-changing ideas that can transform the industry and provide solutions to the government's problems.

Aguilar also announced that this season's mentoring sessions, previously exclusive to the contestants of the show, will be open for the first time to participants outside of the program. The Final Pitch will invite the show’s contestants, students, startups, and other organizations to come together for a one-day learning experience during the filming of the Open House Mentoring Day episode on May 23 at Thames International Business School.

The mentorship program will involve a diversified group of business mentors who will guide the participants. These mentors include Dean Bernales, Founder & CEO of Uniquecorn Strategies; Chris Peralta, Founder of Silicon Valley HQ; Vince Golangco, CEO & Founder of When in Manila; Atty. Marlon Valderama, founder and CEO of LexMeet; Joel Santos, President of Thames International Business School; and Paolo Rentero, Co-Founder of TechShake. Aguilar will likewise give a pitching masterclass based on his best-selling book The Art and Science of the Pitch.

"We are excited to offer opportunities to a varied range of entrepreneurs and startups to take advantage of the fundraising, mentoring, and market reach that The Final Pitch Open Edition can provide. This is our way of promoting inclusivity and diversity on the show, and we're eagerly anticipating the incredible concepts and companies that will emerge from this season," Aguilar added.

To join The Final Pitch, interested applicants will be required to fill out and submit an online entry form through the link: TheFinalPitch.ph/application via its official website TheFinalPitch.ph. The deadline for submission of applications is until May 13, 2023. Coca-Cola Philippines expands partnership with Plastic Bank PH, accelerates collection and recycling in Laguna

Coca-Cola Philippines continues to strengthen its partnerships with like-minded organizations to help address the issue of plastic waste in the country. As part of its efforts, the company has expanded the Ecosystem Impact Program in partnership with Plastic Bank Philippines, a social enterprise that builds collection and recycling ecosystems in communities to prevent ocean-bound plastic waste.

Since the program began operations in Cavite in 2021, it has now expanded to Laguna, with nine new partner shops on board, adding to a total of 15 recyclable wastes collection branches within Coca-Cola Philippines and Plastic Bank's program areas. Furthermore, over 160 new waste collection members have joined the Plastic Bank ecosystem, bringing the total number of members to 600. These new additions to the ecosystem have helped scale the collection of the Program.

Nine new partner shops have been enrolled to the Program this year, with plans to onboard more and further expand operations in Laguna in the coming months.

"Together with our partner, Plastic Bank Philippines, we are delighted to see the expansion of the Plastic Bank Ecosystem in Laguna. At Coca-Cola, we recognize our responsibility in helping address the global plastic waste problem, and we remain committed to growing our collection and recycling efforts across the nation, in collaboration with partners and communities," said Atty. Cashmer Dirampaten, Director for Public Affairs, Communications, and Sustainability of Coca-Cola Franchise East Region.

Through the Coca-Cola Philippines and Plastic Bank Ecosystem Impact Program, partner branches, such as junk shops, are given access to tools and equipment for efficient waste collection, such as sacks, branch uniforms, weighing scales, and shop signages. In addition, members are also provided with training sessions on financial and business literacy, operations management, and health and sanitation. The Program also teaches them how to use the Plastic Bank app, which assists shop owners in tracking collections and sharing their waste collection impact online and at the same time provides ease of access to receive useful information and other benefits from the Program.

Roving waste collection members gather recyclable plastic from households, businesses, and other waste generating sources in the communities and bring the material to partner collection branches. They are the important link or the intermediaries between waste generators and recycling facilities playing a crucial role in the country’s waste management system by helping increase the recycling rate and reducing landfill waste.

The Coca-Cola Philippines and Plastic Bank Ecosystem Impact Program works directly with individuals in the informal waste sector and MSMEs like junk shops to create collection and recycling ecosystems in communities that help prevent plastic waste from going into the ocean. The program also gives the members access to training and equipment for systemized waste collection.

The Program’s waste collection members bring the plastic waste to partner collection branches and receive an above-market rate for collected plastic, which is convertible into cash or digital tokens that can be used for health, work and life insurance, digital connectivity, and social and fintech services.

Gidget Velez, Chief Supply and Countries Officer of Plastic Bank, expressed gratitude for the continuously growing 3-year relationship with Coca-Cola Philippines. “Plastic pollution is a major crisis that affects all life on Earth.
