AXA Philippines embraces the power of art to promote mental health advocacy

Multiple studies present compelling evidence of the transformative effects of the arts on mental health and well-being. These art engagements may range from music therapy for pain management, drama therapy to support social-emotional development, and dance programs for Parkinson’s Disease patients, among others.[1] Growing literature also reveals that art activities may lead to lower levels of stress and daily anxiety, decreased risk of depression, and the development of self-esteem, self-acceptance, confidence, and self-worth.[2] Committed to promoting optimal mental health and overall wellness, AXA Philippines is harnessing the power of art to promote its mental health advocacy through a collaboration with the multidisciplinary art platform Nude Floor.

The dance performance choreographed by Ashvinder Singh embraces the healing power of movement.

Blending art and advocacy

AXA Philippines recently showed support for Nude Floor’s immersive art event called “The Gallery – A Night of Sensory Explorations.” Tapping choreographers, musicians, and visual artists, the interactive art experience served as a platform where both the artists and the attendees became active participants in the dialogue surrounding mental health. It was a unique collaborative exercise between restraint and letting go, reminding the audience of the importance of sensorial awareness when navigating around our everyday realities.

Held at the Samsung Performing Arts Theater, the space was transformed into a 360-degree setting where viewers could freely move around the surface and interact with the local artists' exhibits and installations. The audience also enjoyed an immersive, 90-minute sit-down show featuring several pieces from various movement artists.
Contemporary artist Chloe Alcid’s dance performance perfectly captures the power of art to evoke emotions and inspire audiences

The event brought a fusion of creative expressions, spanning Visual Art, Poetry, 4D Installations, and Live Music. This kinetic exhibition explored the value of intuition, rawness, and vulnerability, underlining how emotional exposure fosters authentic connections.

The partnership between the global insurer and the artists of Nude Floor is an equally strategic and creative approach to advance their shared vision and cause. Nandy Villar, AXA Philippines Chief Marketing Officer, emphasizes the significance of the partnership, stating, "Our collaboration with Nude Floor puts the spotlight on mental health, a discussion often perceived as taboo due to the stigma surrounding it. By supporting an innovative and immersive art experience, we hope to inspire and encourage more people to embark on a journey towards better mental health by embracing art as a powerful outlet to express themselves."

"The Gallery" provided participants with an opportunity to explore their own mental landscapes, fostering a deep understanding of themselves and those around them. This transformative experience leaves a lasting impression, precisely aligning with the event's objective of raising awareness about mental health through personal, emotional, and relatable encounters.

AXA’s continuous global mission

The insurance provider has built a reputation for devoting time and resources to developing solutions and supporting programs aimed at helping individuals around the world reach the peak of good mental health. Among its notable global initiatives is the annual AXA Study of Mind Health and Well-being conducted to measure mental well-being worldwide, identify why some people are struggling, and look at how individuals, healthcare professionals, and policymakers can promote the best possible mental health outcomes for all.

AXA Mind Health Study cites ‘the Great Resignation may not be over’ in the PH

A recent study conducted by leading insurance provider AXA Philippines showed that Filipinos who are struggling at work are almost twice as likely to resign within a year compared to the rest of the world. This accounts for 32% of Filipinos surveyed, versus the global average of 17%, suggesting that the “Great Resignation” is still a continuing trend as professionals continue to re-evaluate their career choices.

The AXA Mind Health study also revealed that job stress (39%), better job and higher pay (39%), the need for work-life balance (32%), and a toxic work culture (31%) are among the top reasons cited by Filipino workers for intending to leave their current jobs.

Going through the ‘Great Resignation’

The study, which highlighted the importance of addressing mind health concerns in the workplace to improve employees’ retention and overall job satisfaction, revealed that the Philippines has the highest resignation rate globally at 18%. Numbers also showed that the intent to resign may not translate to actual resignations with only 14% of Filipino workers actually resigning in the next 12 months. This percentage is lower than the global average across all age groups. Despite the bullish numbers, it is still too early to tell if the “Great Resignation” is over in the Philippines.

The research found that most resignations come from the 18-24 age range, with the younger workforce most likely planning their exit from their jobs eventually. In the Philippines, the intention to resign among young Filipinos is higher, with a 28% resignation rate versus 24% globally. Majority (64%) of Filipino workers who resigned from a job in the last year found it was positive for their mental wellbeing. This number implies that employees usually feel happier when they leave a stressful or toxic environment and move on to something that suits them better.

Youth and workplace productivity

The survey revealed that young workers in the Philippines, particularly those aged 18-24, are least likely to be productive compared to their 24 to 35-year-old colleagues. This is linked to their unmanaged work demands and the difficulty in keeping up with the pace of change at work. In addition, younger workers may not have the same level of people skills as older age groups, which could be beneficial in dealing with stress. It's also worth noting that they might not have yet developed the necessary aptitude for adversity this early in their careers.

Promoting good mind health in the workplace

Employers have an important role to play in promoting the health and happiness of their employees. The research reveals that a supportive workplace has a great impact on employee retention, well-being and productivity. To help employers better understand the workforce’s current state, the study presented six key factors that promote well-being in the workplace: hybrid work, mental health support by employers, strong skill/job matching, control over workload, support for skill development, and clear goals and expectations.

To further establish the connection between mind health and productivity in the workplace, respondents were classified into four mind-health states based on their responses: “flourishing” at the top to “getting by,” “languishing” and “struggling.” Flourishing refers to the pinnacle of good mind health, getting by describes those who may have some areas of good wellbeing but not enough to reach the state of flourishing, languishing represents the absence of positive wellbeing and struggling is associated with emotional stress and psychosocial impairment.

Those who are flourishing are more productive at work and are less likely to leave their jobs. The study further explained that Filipinos are two times more productive if their skills matched the work they were being asked to do. They are also five times more likely to flourish and four times more productive if they had at least some decision-making power over how they did their jobs.

"Over the past years, we have seen Filipinos, most especially the younger generation, leaving their jobs abruptly to prioritize their well-being. It is important that we explore the reason behind this great resignation and why Filipinos are struggling at work,” said AXA Philippines Chief Marketing Officer Nandy Villar. “The findings from our latest Mind Health Study reinforce the value of prioritizing mind health in the workplace like we do at AXA, and the need for employers to take a proactive role in addressing these concerns among their employees."

New understanding brings new hope. By taking into consideration the factors that affect good mental health in the workplace, AXA Philippines believes that this will benefit both employers and employees. Through the findings of the recent Mind Health study, it aims to encourage employers to be more attuned to their employees’ well-being.

Gen Z Pinoys have more mind health conditions than the rest of the world’s youth

AXA Mind Health Index reveals more than half of Gen Z in Asia
are suffering from poor mental health, affecting their professional lives

According to a study by leading insurance provider AXA, the Filipino respondents in the 18- to 24-year-old bracket that admitted going through bouts of depression and anxiety were higher than global numbers. In the Philippines, responses for depression kick in at 35% (vs. 27% globally) while anxiety is at 16% (12% globally). While the COVID-19 pandemic has taken a heavy toll on mind health across society, the latest findings from the annual AXA Study of Mind Health and Wellbeing 2023 has revealed that Gen Z (aged 18-24) appears to be taking the brunt of the impact, with more than half of Gen Z globally (54%) and in Asia (51%) experiencing poor mental health. The Survey identifies specific challenges they face in today’s workplace, while also highlighting the need for employers to explore tailored support to address a potential surge in turnover in young talent.

The research found that Gen Z have the highest proportion of those struggling (associated with emotional stress and psychosocial impairment) at 18% globally and 14% in Asia, more than any other age group. Globally, only 13% of young people aged 18-24 are flourishing at the pinnacle of mind health, with the proportion being 15% in Asia, both the lowest across all age groups. This makes 18-24 the only age group globally that has more people struggling than flourishing.

Gen Z show greater ability to work under stress, though most likely to resign

In Asia’s workplaces, the survey reveals that Gen Z talent are affected by several key challenges that pose a potential threat to their mind health. These include uncertainty about the future (69% vs 59% globally), struggling to separate work life and non-work life (49% vs 39% globally), finding it hard to keep up with the pace of change at work (47% vs 38% globally), and a lack of job-skill fit (14% vs 9% globally). This last factor has a very strong correlation with mental wellbeing, as those that have the right job skill fit are 2.5 times more likely to perform their best according to the research.

The results also show that the 18-24 age group in Asia has the highest percentage of people who intend to resign in the next 12 months (21%). Yet the survey found a clear indication that those in the 18-24 age group who are flourishing are less likely to resign, with the rate being only 16%, highlighting the importance of effectively enabling positive mental health in supporting employee retention.

Workplace mental health support plays a vital role in overall mental wellbeing

Support for mental health in the workplace has risen up the agenda during the pandemic. The research also reveals that in Asia, companies that provide mind health support are 2.5 times more likely to have employees that are flourishing. In particular, while 1 in 4 Gen Z employees who feel they are getting good mind health support at work are flourishing, the rate is only 1 in 100 among those that do not see such support, which is the biggest difference among all age groups. This indicates mind health support in the workplace also has the greatest impact on the mental wellbeing of Gen Z, making this group a priority target for such solutions.

Gordon Watson, CEO of AXA Asia and Africa said, “While mind health has rightly attracted greater attention in the wake of the pandemic’s disruption on our lives, these findings emphasise that the next generation of talent across Asia are facing severe challenges. Companies need to examine how they can make a tangible difference with support relevant to the needs of their Gen Z employees, not only to help with productivity and retention, but to tackle this urgent issue affecting societies across the region.”

Bernardo Serrano Lopez, AXA Philippines President and Chief Executive Officer, adds, “While we see a considerable improvement in mind health globally, this does not mean that we can just sit back and simply let things run its course. The insights from this study helps organizational leaders and people managers steer their initiatives to better benefit our employees’ physical and mental health. At AXA, we take pride in consistently supporting programs that promote diversity and inclusion in the workplace. And we take these learnings to continue evolving our programs to better suit our employees’ needs and to further our vision to become a company where they are #FitToFlourish.”

Overall people in Asia are getting mentally healthier, believe that stigma is declining

Despite this concern, the research found that the proportion of people flourishing in Asia[1] climbed from 19% to 22%, with Asia seeing a bigger rise than the global average. By contrast, the proportion of those struggling in Asia fell to 12%, a year-on-year decrease of 2%. This speaks to improving mental wellbeing across the board. In addition, 36% of respondents globally agree that stigma related to mental health is declining, compared to 31% last year.

The findings show that 25% of people globally are flourishing, with Thailand (37%), a new entrant this year, topping the list and Italy (18%) showing the lowest level. A closer look at Asian countries and territories in the survey finds that the Philippines had the largest proportion globally of people getting by, at 39%, followed by Hong Kong at 37%. Across the region, the largest proportion of languishing and struggling were both in Japan, at 31% and 14% respectively.

Start the year strong by setting purposeful intentions

A new year brings with it a lot of hope and new beginnings, which is why many set resolutions for the year ahead in terms of their physical, financial, professional, and other life goals. However, many struggle with seeing them through. According to a Forbes article, more than half of these resolutions will be abandoned just after one month.

In case it has been a struggle a month or so into the year, we can try taking a different and more flexible approach by setting intentions instead of resolutions. These are like guides that could help condition our mindset and make our goals more flexible, helping take some of the pressure off. According to the 2022  Mind Health Study of leading insurance provider AXA Philippines, which examines the building blocks of mental wellbeing in Europe and Asia, one of the skills needed to achieve the top mental health state –  the state of flourishing - is to reflect on one’s meaning and purpose. Looking inwards and asking ourselves what really matters to us is a good starting point to having more meaning and purpose in our lives.

AXA Philippines advocates protecting what matters and encourages everyone to take care of their physical, mental, and financial health. Here are some intentions to consider for the new year for better holistic health:

Be open to new experiences. What the recent years have taught us is the possibility of life being put to a halt at any moment. This year, why not try being on the lookout for new opportunities and experiences, especially as the world opens up more. Instead of saying, “I can’t,” try saying “why not,” so you can make the most of what life has to offer. Your next big adventure might just be waiting for you to make a move.

Explore different fitness routines. In the same study, AXA shared that physical health behaviors can have a significant effect on a person’s mental health. Becoming fit is one of the most common new year’s resolutions, and possibly one of the hardest to sustain. Instead of aiming to lose a specific amount of weight, focus first on finding the right routine that you truly enjoy and can motivate you long enough to form a habit. In the end, having fun aids in consistency, so you can see the results of your hard work.

Protect your financial and physical health. Having financial freedom is one way to ease your worries. This year, make an effort to be more mindful of your expenses and find ways to grow and protect your wealth. Instead of instant gratification, create a plan for big ticket items and start thinking of ways to save up for it. Aside from just saving and investing money, protect your health as well by getting an insurance plan that fits you and your family’s needs.

Make mental health a priority. Just like physical health, mental health should also be treated with the same importance. In a 2021 survey conducted by health and fitness app REBEL, only 16% of the 500 Filipino respondents targeted to reduce stress and take care of their mental health. This 2023, aim to be more kind to yourself, promise to find more time to do something you love, seek help when needed, and overall aim to be more mindful of your mental health. Avoid burnout and learn to listen to your mind and body to know when you need a break and make time for some me-time.

As we get ready to take on the year, remember to take care of yourself to better care for those who matter to you most. To care for your holistic wellbeing, AXA Philippines has multiple insurance plans available for added health protection and coverage. Health Care Access is a comprehensive health plan that takes care of your overall wellbeing - from prevention, diagnosis, hospitalization, and treatments, and even includes coverage for mental health services.

AXA Philippines also has Health Start, which covers critical illnesses including cancers common to women such as breast and ovarian cancer, while also providing you with coverage for your child. Their Health Start Lite plan also covers the top three critical illnesses and starts at as low as Php 535 per month.

Lastly, AXA’s Global Health Access has an extensive worldwide medical coverage for the prevention and diagnosis of critical illnesses. Since caring for yourself also means taking vitamins and supplements, you can have these reimbursed as part of your plan’s coverage, which is also applicable for pregnant women and their specific needs.

AXA Philippines partners with Bixie to empower women through insurance

AXA Philippines, one of the country’s leading insurance companies, has partnered with online financial literacy platform Bixie to make insurance more accessible to women.
As part of the partnership, AXA Philippines’ micro insurance products will be available via the Bixie app. Those interested to apply will go through a less complicated application process, which is one of the barriers for people to get insurance. The application involves less paperwork, making it easier to purchase insurance and get themselves protected. The partnership is a significant step to make insurance even more accessible to the everyday Filipino, especially women.

“In AXA, we are committed towards reinforcing gender equality and helping drive financial inclusion. We join Bixie in its thrust of empowering women to know their worth as well as grow their worth,” said Rose Musico, Chief of General Insurance & Commercial Business.

Bixie is a platform that connects women who want to invest with the knowledge, network, and tools they need to start investing. The company uses UBX, an open finance platform that provides an extensive network of financial institutions and embedded solutions.

According to Bixie’s founder & CEO, Rosalia Gitau, “Bixie’s entire mission is to empower women to start managing and controlling their money and then to grow it. We want women at all socioeconomic levels to know that this is within their reach. What we love about this partnership with AXA is that they are providing microinsurance products that are so affordable and so accessible that it really is aligned with our mission.”

AXA Philippines will also be providing microinsurance to 500 Filipina small and medium enterprise (SME) owners, who were selected through the Catholic Relief Services (CRS). This partnership is the culmination of a month-long, Philippine-based pilot project that AXA and Bixie did with Catholic Relief Services, a humanitarian agency in the United States, who invested in and insured 500 Filipina SME owners. These women were graduates of CRS’ savings and loan schemes and have already shown initiative in wanting to determine a better future for themselves.

Get your AXA microinsurance via the Bixie app now (https://linktr.ee/mybixie) .

Secure your child’s future with the gift of education through AXA MyLifeChoice

When it comes to securing the future of your children, one of the best gifts you can give them is a good education. This is especially true for Filipino parents who believe that being able to send their children to top schools in the country or abroad is a legacy that they can leave to help them achieve their full potential in life

But there’s no denying that costs for education continue to rise every year, especially with inflation at an all-time high. If you are wondering how much you need to save to send your child to their dream school, here are a few of the things you’ll need to consider:

Tuition fees – while some colleges offer free tuition under the Commission on Higher Education’s (CHED) Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act, many of the country’s top universities are private institutions whose tuition fees can cost PHP 100,000 or more, according to a recent report. You also need to account for inflation. According to CHED for AY 2021 - 2022, the national average rate of increase in tuition per unit is 4.74 percent, while the national average rate for other school fees is 10.61 percent per semester. For example, if a parent wants their six-year-old to study in a private university 10 years from now and their preferred university’s tuition is currently at PHP 110,000, it would then be around PHP 285,311 by the time they enroll. When compounded by the time the child reaches their 4th year in college, this would amount to PHP 379,749 per year.

Residence and Transportation – If you are sending your child to a college abroad or far from where you live, you’ll need to consider their daily transportation allowance or even renting a dorm room or condo unit near where they’ll be studying. Dorm rent for sharing with three to four other housemates can go as high as P6,500 around the university belt area.

Gadgets – In today’s digital age, students consider laptops and mobile phones as must-haves for learning. While it’s possible to get a good budget mobile phone for around PHP 10,000, laptops for online classes and other schoolwork can range from PHP 20,000 to 30,000. You’ll also need to allocate budget for your child’s Wi-Fi or data connection.

Books and School Supplies – Finally, allot around PHP 20,000 to 25,000 annually for books and supplies such as notebooks, writing materials, and special equipment that your child will need every semester, as these have also been affected by the rising prices. Take into account as well that not every field has the same amount of expenses. For example, if you’re raising a future doctor, they will take longer to finish their pre-medical course and their medical school education, while science courses may have additional laboratory expenses.

Putting all these costs together, you will easily end up with a budget of over six figures in a year – which is not a sum that can be saved quickly or easily for most. Furthermore, there are considerations that need to be factored in such as unplanned emergencies or in case you pass on. That’s why having a financial solution that protects you from life’s uncertainties is needed so you can focus on working your way to your goals such as securing your child a bright future.

One of the ways to secure your child’s education is to get a comprehensive insurance plan like MyLifeChoice for Education, AXA Philippines’ most flexible insurance and investment plan designed to ensure your child’s education until college no matter what happens. An essential holiday gift for the important women in your life

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, and it’s truly an exciting season as we all gather for annual get-togethers. But for some people, it’s also the busiest time of the year — perhaps a little bit too busy that they always forget how to take care of themselves.

According to Frances Prescilla Cuevas, Chief Health Program Officer of the Department of Health’s National Mental Health Program[1], the holidays can bring about feelings of anxiety and depression or “holiday blues,” which may be temporary but should still be taken seriously. Some factors mentioned causing this can be the financial burden of gift giving or having to visit relatives.

Those who have others depending on or have expectations from them are likely the ones to feel the extra pressure during the holidays, especially women belonging to the “sandwich generation” – the 30- to 45-year-olds taking care of both their growing kids and aging parents. On top of work and household responsibilities, we can only imagine how overwhelming their day-to-day could be in terms of responsibilities and finances let alone the holidays.

In fact, The Parenting Index survey in Switzerland found that for Filipinos, societal and internal pressure comes from traditional, collectivist culture, strong family ties, and the demands of balancing childcare and work to help provide and care for the family. The survey also showed that most Filipinos live with extended families.[2] These pressures can leave no time for self-care and can cause a great amount of stress, which would lead to health problems.

It is difficult for the women belonging to the sandwich generation to even begin thinking about taking care of themselves. Starting this holiday season, show your appreciation and remind the important women in your life to relax once in a while and if possible, provide the escape they may need yourself – treat them to a day out such as a spa day, shopping spree, or a vacation getaway – to thank them for their sacrifices throughout the year.

However, you can also consider giving them holistic self-care by alleviating more of their long-term worries in the coming months and even years. A health insurance plan that can protect them and their loved ones against unexpected diseases and emergencies can benefit them financially and mentally in the long-term.

For instance, AXA offers Health Care Access, a comprehensive health insurance plan that covers all possible healthcare needs from prevention care and diagnosis to hospitalization and treatments. Some plans even have teleconsultation and mental health services included — truly something worth having.

Meanwhile, according to another report by Statista, the top illnesses that cause mortality in Filipinos and women are ischemic heart or coronary artery disease, cancer with the top being lung, breast, and colon, and pneumonia. With proper care and awareness, these life-threatening diseases can be prevented.

AXA has health plans that cover exams to diagnose certain critical illnesses in order to be treated immediately. They also have more affordable health insurance offerings, such as their Health Start Lite plan, which costs as low as P535 a month — and this already covers the top three critical illnesses, namely cancer, stroke, and heart attack, and nine minor critical illnesses that women may also be susceptible to.

For more coverage for your loved one, AXA’s Health Start plan has coverage on critical illnesses, specifically cancers, that are common to women. This is beneficial for mothers as they can have the option to share the coverage with their child.

AXA also offers the Global Health Access plan which has best-in-class worldwide health coverage of up to PHP 100 million and includes the diagnosis and prevention of women-specific illnesses through extensive health screening and outpatient benefits, coverage against cancers, reimbursement supplements, and most importantly — cash benefits for pregnant women.

Taking care of one’s health is an important part of self-care. Starting this holiday season, share this reminder to the important women in your life and encourage them to leave space for their own health and wellness, too. The simple act of gifting them a health insurance plan gives them security and peace of mind against health issues so they can focus on what matters most – enjoying quality time with their family and loved ones, and pursuing their personal passions.

"Every day we see a lot of people challenging others on how to take care of themselves, and this ironically resulted in giving more pressure for each of us,” said AXA Philippines Chief Marketing Officer Nandy Villar.

"People don't need another preacher, but a partner. And AXA aims to be that partner to everyone. We truly understand the tension and struggles the sandwich generation are facing in achieving holistic health,” Villar continued.

‘Tis the season…for travel: Fun holiday experiences for all

As leisurely travel awakens from its slumber, Filipinos are starting to seize the opportunity to see the world and enjoy vacations especially after being cooped up for a long period. According to data from the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB), the country's air passenger traffic volume in domestic and international flights increased more than fourfold to 13.2 million passengers in the first half of 2022, up from 2.95 million in the same period last year.

The easing of travel restrictions means you can finally return to your favorite holiday destination or explore other locations for a new take on Christmas – a perfect gift for your loved ones, and a reward for yourself, too!

So, gather your family and friends and prepare to go local or international, as you visit these holiday spots that will surely make you feel jolly:

Enjoy a holiday beach getaway in Apulit Island, Palawan. If golden sunsets and tranquility is your idea of a perfect Christmas, then a trip to this luxurious island is most ideal for you. Choose your own relaxing room from among the 50 traditional water cottages, interact with wildlife, take in the breathtaking scenery, or test your strength by rappelling down the nearby 60-meter limestone cliff. This Christmas, enjoy peace and fun while being close to nature in this tropical paradise.

Have an adventurous holiday in Samal Island. Escape the noise from the metro and enjoy a unique Christmas with loved ones by going to this island’s best places. Relax and unwind at Hagimit Falls or try an exhilarating hike at Mt. Puting Bato for a dazzling view of the island from above. Greet the Monfort Bat Cave’s nocturnal animals for the holidays as they emerge from their lair, or just bask in the sun and take a dip in the pristine waters of beaches and resorts.

Chill and ski in Hokkaido, Japan. If you like adventures while enjoying the sight of immaculate snow fields, then reward yourself with a holiday trip to Hokkaido. Visit the snow-blanketed ski resorts and enjoy the local onsen and take a bath in the warm and therapeutic hot spring waters after a long day spent in the cold. You can also see the Sapporo White Illumination, in which over 500,000 light bulbs enlighten Christmas-themed decor in Odori Park and trees lining some of the capital's main streets.

Go on a Christmas getaway to Iceland. Who doesn’t dream to see the majestic skies adorned with northern lights? Iceland offers the perfect place that gives-off a native Christmas spirit with its holiday markets, foods, and drinks, while glittering Christmas trees stand ground all over the place. It’s a dreamy winter wonderland, but if you like to take a break from the snow, take a dip in the warm waters of Blue Lagoon’s geothermal waters.

Visit Santa’s home at Rovaniemi - Lapland, Finland. If “North Pole” vibes is what you’re going for, then booking a flight to this destination can be the best Christmas idea for you. In the Arctic Circle of Finland, you can see Santa Claus everywhere. In his red and white suit, the Christmas icon can be followed through reindeer-filled forests, where his elves prepare the toys. Lapland, as one of the most magical destinations, has an amazing 'Santa Park' where you can frolic in the unending fields of snow, and can be a dreamland not just for kids, but for kids at heart as well.

As you finish your holiday travel checklist, ensuring your safety and that of your loved ones wherever you go should be your main priority. Make time for regular self-checks to aid in early detection of breast cancer

Me-time is self-care, and this includes monitoring your health. Breast cancer is an illness that must be monitored year-round, as early detection is one of the best ways to improve its survival rate. Something as simple as doing breast self-examinations (BSE) regularly can help detect any lump or abnormality and allow you to report them early to your doctor.
Breast cancer remains as one of the most common cancers among Filipino women, affecting three in every 100 Filipinas that will be diagnosed within their lifetime, according to the Philippine Statistics of Authority and the Department of Health (DOH)

Regular monitoring for women is crucial. Here is a quick BSE guide from the DOH that can be executed virtually anywhere, and is recommended to be done monthly, three to five days after a woman’s period ends:

In front of a mirror: Stand before a mirror with your arms at your side. Inspect your breast for any changes in the size, shape, or contour and check for swelling, dimpling or puckering of the skin. Gently squeeze each nipple and check for discharge. Next, put your hands on your hips and press down firmly, elbows out. Repeat the inspection. Finally, raise your arms over your head and repeat the inspection. Normally, your left breast and right breast will not look exactly the same but through regular inspection, you will know what when something is out of the ordinary for you.

In the shower: Your hands will move easier over wet skin so it is easier for you to examine your breast during a bath or shower. Use your right hand to examine your left breast and your left hand for your right breast. Keep your fingers flat. Move them gently in circular motions over every part of each breast. Check for any lump, hard knot, or thickening.

Lying down: Lie flat on your back and place a pillow or folded towel under your left shoulder. Put your left arm under your head. Then, press gently but firmly your flattened fingers to your breast and move in circular motions. Use the three middle fingers and apply three levels of pressure in a circular motion, following an up and down pattern. Check for any lump, hard knot or thickening.

Breast clock examination: This is a methodical way of checking your breast for any lump, hard knot, or thickening. First, imagine your breast as a clock. Start at the outermost part of your breast or the 12 o’clock position. Then move on to the 1 o’clock position around the imaginary clock face until you are back to the 12 o’clock position. Examine every part of your breast. You will need to make at least three circles to complete the examination on each breast. Move your hand over your breast in a downward and upward motion. Check for any irregularity. Finally, squeeze the nipple of each breast between thumb and forefinger. Report any discharge to a doctor right away.

Aside from BSEs, it is also important to ensure you are ready should the unexpected happen, especially if you have a higher risk of developing breast cancer.

Getting diagnosed with critical illnesses such as cancer is an unpredictable part of life and can happen to anyone at any time. It pays to be prepared for whatever life may bring, and AXA Philippines’ wide range of health products can help you protect yourself and your loved ones. The company also recently launched its “Make Time for Me-Time” campaign and is shining the spotlight on the importance of taking time for self-care, cementing the company’s commitment to being a part of every Filipino’s self-care journey through its wide range of health solutions that cover critical illnesses.

These products include Global Health Access, AXA’s best-in-class comprehensive health plan with coverage for executive checkups, including women-specific tests such sonograms, mammograms, among others. It offers up to ₱175 million in hospitalization coverage for critical illnesses specific to women, including cancer of the breast and uterus, and cash benefits for pregnant women via reimbursements for female vitamins and supplements. Meanwhile, Health Care Access provides a comprehensive approach in taking care of yourself starting from preventive care up until diagnosis with coverage for medical consultation, lab tests, and diagnostics, to hospitalization, and treatment. Both products also cover mental health counselling until December 31, 2022.

AXA Philippines also has Health Start which covers critical illnesses with an option to include coverage for your child, while Health Start Lite provides you and your child with coverage against the top three critical illnesses – heart attack, cancer, and stroke – and nine minor critical illnesses for as low as ₱535 a month.

AXA urges women to continue the habit of doing regular BSEs and take time for their health. To further encourage self-checks, the company also worked with longtime partner Liverpool Football Club (Liverpool FC) for the ‘In Safe Hands’ campaign, which raises awareness on early detection of breast cancer and testicular cancer. The campaign promotes early detection of breast cancer as diagnosis at Stage 1 gives a survival rate of 99% in the next five years. Liverpool FC goalkeepers and AXA doctors also collaborated on videos demonstrating how to properly do self-checks to help guide the public.
