Google Philippines crowdsourced “Miss Ko Na” OFW song first 360-degree video

Tapsilog, Halo-halo and noche buena, among the things overseas Pinoys miss

Google Philippines recently launched  its crowdsourced song entitled “Miss Ko Na” for OFWs. Also, the music video of the song is the first 360-degree video in the Philippines.

Together with 5 well known bands and musicians, Google released the “Miss Ko Na” song featuring crowdsourced lyrics from Filipinos here and abroad. Sponge Cola, ItchyWorms and Kjwan, along with vocalist Ebe Dancel, and YouTube star Mikey Bustos worked together to put melody and structure to the answers to Google’s question “Anong namimiss mo sa Pilipinas?” (“What do you miss most in the Philippines?”) Google asked for submissions from OFWs using Google Forms and on their social media accounts using the hashtag #GoogleMissKoNa, which were then used as lyrics to the song.

The “Miss Ko Na” music video is also the first 360-degree YouTube video in the Philippines, which viewers on Chrome browser can tap on and drag to see different perspectives of the video. Viewers on Android phones using the YouTube App can simply move their phones to watch the video from different angles.

The video found on https://youtu.be/gD8RPX3NoQs can also be saved on the YouTube Offline playlist for viewing within 48-hours without an internet connection.

“The submissions of our kababayans were very inspiring and made it easy for us to come up with a song that speaks of their longing for home. “Miss Ko Na” is not only about the story of OFWs; it is also a story about sacrifice and selfless love that Filipinos are known for,” shares Kelley Mangahas of Kjwan.

The song captures famous Filipino traditions such as celebrating noche buena with family, going to fiestas with friends, playing basketball with relatives, and eating with bare hands, among others. It also showcased Filipino food that OFWs crave for such as halo-halo and tapsilog.

Yael Yuzon of Sponge Cola said “It’s a simple catchy song that captures the Filipino spirit. It reflects how we celebrate the good and we pummel through the bad with a smile and a positive outlook.”

“We are very thankful for the participation of our kababayans in this initiative. To show our gratitude, Google and the collaborators donated a peso for every submission we got, and the overwhelming replies from Pinoys allowed us to donate Php 1 million to the Blas Ople Policy Center & Training Institute. This will be used to build halfway houses for overseas Filipinos in need,” says Ryan Morales Google Philippines country marketing manager.

Filipinos can sing-along using the YouTube Karaoke version at http://youtu.be/71ozeiT7Kq8

For National Heroes Day, five Pinoy musicians (Ebe Dancel, Itchyworms, Kjwan, Mikey Bustos, and Sponge Cola) wrote this song for OFWs, with a little help from Filipinos all around the world.

The song is exclusively available on YouTube.

Google calls on Pinoys for lyrics for new OFW song

Google Philippines is set to launch a special song with five well-known local bands and musicians for the Filipino modern-day heroes, the Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs). The song is meant to recognize and celebrate close to 12 million OFWs and aims to reconnect them with the things they miss back home through music. And every Filipino can be part of this special project because the lyrics will be crowdsourced from millions of Filipinos here and abroad.

Google is working with Sponge Cola, ItchyWorms and Kjwan, band vocalist Ebe Dancel and YouTube star Mikey Bustos, who will be putting melody to the lyrics and will be recording the song together. The song will be released on September 1 exclusively on YouTube, just in time for the National Heroes’ Day.

“Wherever we go, we see how the Filipino spirit comes to life whenever there’s music. The song and the lyrics will hopefully touch their hearts and remind them that wherever they are, we remember them,” shares Ebe, popular singer and songwriter who rose to fame as frontman of pop rock band Sugar Free.

“In our effort to make the lives of Filipinos easier, we strive to provide Filipino families ways to stay connected wherever in the world they may be,” says Ryan Morales, Google Philippines country marketing manager. “This is why we thought of creating this song to deliver the fond memories of our overseas Filipinos across the miles through music and technology. We are inviting every Filipino to join in the fun by contributing lyrics to the song.”

This initiative is part of Google Philippines’ “Balikbayan” campaign which aims to reconnect overseas Filipinos with their families and friends and help them sustain and enrich their relationships despite physical barriers.

Aside from being dedicated to OFWs, every submission to the song will also amount to a Php1 donation made on behalf of the collaborators to the Blas Ople Policy Center & Training Institute. These donations will be used to build halfway houses for victims of human trafficking.

To submit lyrics, simply go to https://goo.gl/vRkjUK or post using #GoogleMissKoNa on Google+, Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.

Those living abroad can share what they miss most about the Philippines while those living in the country can share what they miss most about their distant loved ones.

OFW: “Nagpadala lang ako, nagkabahay na ako!” UAE-based OFW wins house and lot with Move It To Win It promo

Manila, Philippines – An overseas Filipino worker (OFW) based in United Arab Emirates is the grand winner of LBC’s Move It To Win promo. After a series of weekly and monthly draws, Junaly Deguma, a loyal customer of LBC, is now a proud owner of a house and lot in Avida Village Cerise, in Nuvali, Sta. Rosa, Laguna.

“At first, I couldn’t believe it when LBC representatives informed me that my sea cargo transaction won me the grand prize,” shared Deguma. A native of Tagum, Davao, Deguma worked as an administrative secretary in a construction firm in UAE, but she will soon start working in Japan. She is also a mother of two children.
Anne Baylon-Jara, Avida Marketing Manager; Tess Tatco, Avida Marketing Head; De Guma;
her mother Sherlita L. De Asis.; and Darlene Dollente, Brand Communications Manager, LBC Express Inc.

Deguma has been using LBC’s remittance and cargo delivery services since moving abroad in 2009.

“I only trust LBC. My family trusts LBC. They know that whenever I send money or packages, they only have LBC in mind. Now, I feel like years of being a loyal customer finally paid off,” she said.

Moving to a newer, better home

“Nagpadala lang ako, nagkabahay na ako,” she exclaimed when asked how she felt upon learning that she won the unit.

Deguma’s new house is part of a 20-hectare lush residential community in the Nuvali eco-city, a large-scale, master planned development where the promise of redefining live, work, and recreate is made possible in an integrated natural and man-made environment. Avida Village is divided into three different strategically planned house units – Bernice, Cresta, and Phoebe, which gives every family the choice of home they’ve always wanted.

All the spaces are surrounded by sprawling greenery, pocket parks, and open spaces that make living more refreshing. De Guma and her family are also entitled to live the Nuvali lifestyle – sustainable and secure – with amenities they will truly enjoy.

Managed by the Ayala Property Management Corporation, Avida Village Cerise Nuvali is accessible via public transportation and is easy to find. It is near restaurants, shopping outlets, leisure parks, and many other recreational activities. More importantly, it is close to schools, churches, hospitals, commercial centers, and business hubs, which ensures all residents’ needs are within reach.

“We are happy to welcome Ms. Deguma’s family to Nuvali. We hope that they will enjoy everything that Avida Village Cerise has to offer,” said Tess Tatco, Head of Marketing for Avida.

Aside from the Avida house and lot, the LBC Move It To Win It promo also gave away P10,000 weekly, shopping and grocery vouchers, roundtrip tickets to the Philippines, and brand new cars to OFWs who availed of LBC’s TRANSFAST remittance services within the promo period of October 1 to December 15, 2014.

“This is LBC’s way of recognizing the loyalty of our customers. We value them as much as they value the money and the cargo they send their loved ones. We appreciate their trust and we will continue to provide them with quality services that not just move boxes and cash, but also move lives. We invite everyone to just continue sending their remittances and balikbayan boxes through LBC and they can expect more exciting customer deals this year,” said Darlene Dollente, LBC Brand Communication Manager.

Pope Francis' Meeting with Families at MOA

Pope Francis met with Filipino families, including those representing OFWs and PWDs, at the “Meeting with Families” at the Mall of Asia Arena, his day 2 , January 16, 2015.

During his homily, he reminded the Catholic faithful to “protect the family”, and noted that economic challenges are tearing families apart as more people migrate in search of better employment.

Pope Francis with the theme of his visit to the Philippines, "The Holy Family's Journey, The Pilgrimage of Every Family", as he calls for respect for life. Pope Francis quotes Saint John Paul II and says the future of humanity passes through the family. He calls for respect for life and reminds the audience of the sacredness of every human life from conception to natural death.

Pope Francis reminds listeners to make time to pray. He says we must make time to pray and that rest is essential for our spiritual health, so that we can better hear God's voice and understand His message.

Pope Francis reminds the crowd not to lose the capacity to dream. "When you lose the capacity to dream, you lose the capacity to love."

Below is the full text of the prepared speech of Pope Francis, which he delivered during the Meeting with Families at the Mall of Asia Arena

Below is the full text of the prepared speech of Pope Francis, which he delivered during the Meeting with Families at the Mall of Asia Arena, Friday, January 16.

Dear Families,

Dear Friends in Christ,

I am grateful for your presence here this evening and for the witness of your love for Jesus and his Church. I thank Bishop Reyes, Chairman of the Bishops’ Commission on Family and Life, for his words of welcome on your behalf. And, in a special way, I thank those who have presented testimonies and have shared their life of faith with us.

The Scriptures seldom speak of Saint Joseph, but when they do, we often find him resting, as an angel reveals God’s will to him in his dreams. In the Gospel passage we have just heard, we find Joseph resting not once, but twice. This evening I would like to rest in the Lord with all of you, and to reflect with you on the gift of the family.

Joseph’s rest revealed God’s will to him. In this moment of rest in the Lord, as we pause from our many daily obligations and activities, God is also speaking to us. He speaks to us in the reading we have just heard, in our prayer and witness, and in the quiet of our hearts. Let us reflect on what the Lord is saying to us, especially in this evening’s Gospel. There are three aspects of this passage which I would ask you to consider: resting in the Lord, rising with Jesus and Mary, and being a prophetic voice.

Resting in the Lord. Rest is so necessary for the health of our minds and bodies, and often so difficult to achieve due to the many demands placed on us. But rest is also essential for our spiritual health, so that we can hear God’s voice and understand what he asks of us. Joseph was chosen by God to be the foster father of Jesus and the husband of Mary. As Christians, you too are called, like Joseph, to make a home for Jesus. You make a home for him in your hearts, your families, your parishes and your communities.

To hear and accept God’s call, to make a home for Jesus, you must be able to rest in the Lord. You must make time each day for prayer. But you may say to me: Holy Father, I want to pray, but there is so much work to do! I must care for my children; I have chores in the home; I am too tired even to sleep well. This may be true, but if we do not pray, we will not know the most important thing of all: God’s will for us. And for all our activity, our busy-ness, without prayer we will accomplish very little.

Resting in prayer is especially important for families. It is in the family that we first learn how to pray. There we come to know God, to grow into men and women of faith, to see ourselves as members of God’s greater family, the Church. In the family we learn how to love, to forgive, to be generous and open, not closed and selfish. We learn to move beyond our own needs, to encounter others and share our lives with them. That is why it is so important to pray as a family! That is why families are so important in God’s plan for the Church!

Next, rising with Jesus and Mary. Those precious moments of repose, of resting with the Lord in prayer, are moments we might wish to prolong. But like Saint Joseph, once we have heard God’s voice, we must rise from our slumber; we must get up and act (cf. Rom 13:11). Faith does not remove us from the world, but draws us more deeply into it. Each of us, in fact, has a special role in preparing for the coming of God’s kingdom in our world.

Just as the gift of the Holy Family was entrusted to Saint Joseph, so the gift of the family and its place in God’s plan is entrusted to us. The angel of the Lord revealed to Joseph the dangers which threatened Jesus and Mary, forcing them to flee to Egypt and then to settle in Nazareth. So too, in our time, God calls upon us to recognize the dangers threatening our own families and to protect them from harm.

The pressures on family life today are many. Here in the Philippines, countless families are still suffering from the effects of natural disasters. The economic situation has caused families to be separated by migration and the search for employment, and financial problems strain many households. While all too many people live in dire poverty, others are caught up in materialism and lifestyles which are destructive of family life and the most basic demands of Christian morality. The family is also threatened by growing efforts on the part of some to redefine the very institution of marriage, by relativism, by the culture of the ephemeral, by a lack of openness to life.

Our world needs good and strong families to overcome these threats! The Philippines needs holy and loving families to protect the beauty and truth of the family in God’s plan and to be a support and example for other families. Every threat to the family is a threat to society itself. The future of humanity, as Saint John Paul II often said, passes through the family (cf. Familiaris Consortio, 85). So protect your families! See in them your country’s greatest treasure and nourish them always by prayer and the grace of the sacraments. Families will always have their trials, but may you never add to them! Instead, be living examples of love, forgiveness and care. Be sanctuaries of respect for life, proclaiming the sacredness of every human life from conception to natural death. What a gift this would be to society, if every Christian family lived fully its noble vocation! So rise with Jesus and Mary, and set out on the path the Lord traces for each of you.

Finally, the Gospel we have heard reminds us of our Christian duty to be prophetic voices in the midst of our communities. Joseph listened to the angel of the Lord and responded to God’s call to care for Jesus and Mary. In this way he played his part in God’s plan, and became a blessing not only for the Holy Family, but a blessing for all of humanity. With Mary, Joseph served as a model for the boy Jesus as he grew in wisdom, age and grace (cf. Lk 2:52). When families bring children into the world, train them in faith and sound values, and teach them to contribute to society, they become a blessing in our world. God’s love becomes present and active by the way we love and by the good works that we do. We extend Christ’s kingdom in this world. And in doing this, we prove faithful to the prophetic mission which we have received in baptism.

During this year which your bishops have set aside as the Year of the Poor, I would ask you, as families, to be especially mindful of our call to be missionary disciples of Jesus. This means being ready to go beyond your homes and to care for our brothers and sisters who are most in need. I ask you especially to show concern for those who do not have a family of their own, in particular those who are elderly and children without parents. Never let them feel isolated, alone and abandoned, but help them to know that God has not forgotten them. You may be poor yourselves in material ways, but you have an abundance of gifts to offer when you offer Christ and the community of his Church. Do not hide your faith, do not hide Jesus, but carry him into the world and offer the witness of your family life!

Dear friends in Christ, know that I pray for you always! I pray that the Lord may continue to deepen your love for him, and that this love may manifest itself in your love for one another and for the Church. Pray often and take the fruits of your prayer into the world, that all may know Jesus Christ and his merciful love. Please pray also for me, for I truly need your prayers and will depend on them always!
