McJim kicks off second season of Dreams Get Real talent search

WILL you be next big star of Original Pilipino Music (OPM)?

After successfully launching the careers of three of the most promising acts today, iconic brand McJim Classic Leather opens doors of opportunity for aspiring stars to become legitimate recording artists in the second season of “Dreams Get Real : The Search for the Next OPM Star. ”

“This year, we aim to make Dreams Get Real talent search even bigger, brighter, and better. We are now offering a full album and music video grant, P100,000 in cash prize, artist marketing support, and a talent management contract to the sole winner!“ said Chris Cahilig, Dreams Get Real project head.
Dreams Get Real. The talent search that launched the careers of three of the most promising OPM acts today is back for another season.

Last year’s triple-tie winners, Fifth Dynamics, JBK and Neo Domingo, are rocking the music scene after recording chart-topping hits and are busy with television guest appearances, and mall and corporate shows across the country. The talents are likewise completing their debut albums produced by award-winning arranger and composer Jonathan Ong of SonicState Studio.
Fifth Dynamics. Fast-rising band Fifth Dynamics who released two chart-topping songs “Anyare” and “Pogi Kame” is a product of Dreams Get Real Talent Search last year.

Fifth Dynamics, led by former The Voice of the Philippines contestant Mark Cordovales, is a fast-rising band. After winning the Dreams Get Real talent search, the group has released two chart-topping single titled “Anyare” and “Pogi Kame.”

On the other hand, vocal trio JBK, which is composed of Joshua, Bryan, and Kim, is making everyone’s heart melt. The group’s R&B-infused ballad, “Anong Meron Ka,” gets major airtime on popular radio stations nationwide.

Neo. Dreams Get Real Grand Champion Neo Domingo has released song “Pagbigyan Mo Na,” which is heavily played on different radio stations across the country.
Likewise, Neo Domingo topped national and local charts with his debut single “Pagbigyan Mo Na”. It was likewise named as the Most Wanted Song of 97.1 Barangay LS FM. His follow up single“Kaching-Kaching” featuring Fifth Dynamics is now heavily aired on Metro Manila and provincial radio stations.

This year’s contestants will work with award-winning musical talents and will have a chance to perform at big venues. “They will have a first-hand experience of the entire recording process and will get a chance to perform in shows while they are in the competition,” Cahilig said.

JBK. Vocal trio JBK composed of Joshua, Bryan, and Kim released the hit song “Anong Meron Ka” after winning the Dreams Get Real Talent Search and has been doing shows across the country ever since.
The talent search is open to all unsigned male and female solo artists, aged 15 to 35 years old, with Filipino lineage.

To audition, interested artists need to send a video recording or Youtube link of their performance/s (they may opt to submit a cover or an original song of any genre of their choice) together with the filled-out application form.

An initial pool of twenty contestants will undergo a series of weekly eliminations—starting in July—until only 10 finalists remain in the competition. The finalists will record and film viral videos to be posted on the TV Get Real YouTube channel of McJim Classic Leather, where the Top Six will be chosen from. The remaining six will then battle it out in an epic grand finals night, which will be held on November 15.

“The contestants need to go through an elimination process to reveal who truly has star quality. They will also experience what it’s like to do a professional recording session,” Cahilig explained.

“The local music industry is very hard to penetrate; it’s a highly competitive arena,” Cahilig pointed out. “Dreams Get Real is here to help new artists break into the music scene. We will give them the platform—a ticket to possible stardom.”

Six promising OPM acts battle it out in “Dreams Get Real” talent search finals

Getting a crack on being the next Original Pilipino Music (OPM) star are the Top 6 of “Dreams Get Real,” a music talent search organized by McJIM Classic Leather. Battling it out in the decisive grand finals slated on June 30 are Archetype, CK Arca, Dream of Pearl, Fifth Dynamics, JBK and Neo Domingo.

Would it be a band, a boy band, or a solo act?

In the run up for the grand finals, the Top 6 have recorded and released their debut singles in radio stations nationwide and be featured in MTV Pinoy for the month of June. A jury composed of music industry stalwarts led by project head and public relations executive Chris Cahilig and multi-awarded arranger Jonathan Ong of Sonic State Studio will take into consideration radio airplay, radio chart and Youtube views as well as overall potential in selecting the grand winner.

“McJim Classic Leather initiated the competition to give undiscovered Filipino talents a chance to be heard while expanding the library of OPM with fresh melodies and lyrics that resonate the national sentiment,” says Cahilig.

“We applied McJim’s principle of quality and originality in choosing the six singles recorded by the finalists. We are optimistic and confident that these songs will help advance our agenda of enlivening the local music industry,” he adds.

In the Top 6 is Archetype from Tondo, Manila who recorded “Di Na Biro,” which is the group’s own composition. Composed of Alvin Traqueña (rhythm guitar), Ar John Patalay (lead guitar), Nikko Martin Francisco (bass guitar), Tricia May Casauay (vocals) and Zejemiah Gonzaga (drums), the band plays alternative and rock music and considers Hillsong, Paramore, Up Dharma Down and Kamikazee as their musical influences.
Archetype

“At first I thought we join into this competition just for experience, because honestly, we lack outside exposure,” says bass guitarist Nikko Martin. “But as I think of it deeper, ‘Dreams Get Real’ is a venue for us to showcase our talent, to prove that we can do more.”

CK Arca
CK Arca, on the other hand, is Calvin Khaye from Caloocan City who interpreted “Certified Good Vibes,” an inspirational song composed by Raffy Calicdan, a PhilPop finalist and a member of The X-Factor finalist Take Off. CK usually sings and plays pop, R&B, classic rock and standard music and looks up to Bruno Mars, Michael Jackson, Steve Perry and Aerosmith as his musical idols. He joined the competition to “gain more experience as a singer and to work with one of the best management companies here in this industry.”

Dream of Pearl
Another Top 6 entrant is Dream of Pearl, whose debut single “Panalo” is composed by Oli Agustin of Letter Day Story. The amateur band, which hails from Caloocan City, is composed of Alfonso Abrenzosa (vocals), Mark Jayson Dizon (guitar), Von Christian Vizmanos (bass) and Evan Briones (drums). Playing alternative, rock and acoustic music, the band considers Eraserheads, Bamboo, Parokya ni Edgar and Silent Sanctuary as their musical influences.

Being a part of Top 6 has been a big boost for the band’s confidence and considers the competition as a door opening to a myriad of opportunities. “We believe that ‘Dreams Get Real’ is a big break for us,” says vocalist Alfonso. “This is a chance to show our talent and our own music.”

Fifth Dynamics
Another group taking a shot for the grand prize is Fifth Dynamics, from Antipolo City, meanwhile recorded “Anyare” a self-composed piece written with the help of Cahilig, the discovered and manager of hitmaker boy band 1:43. Composed of Mark Cordovales (vocals), John Peterson Leyva (rhythm guitar), Eljon Nono (lead guitar), Daryl Jay Santos (bass guitar) and Aldrin Condat (drums), the group plays mainly pop rock and alternative rock and follows the musical lead of Rivermaya, Bamboo, Kris Allen and Boyce Avenue.

Dreaming one day of representing the Philippines in an international competition, Fifth Dynamics hopes to kickstart that goal by becoming a recording artist. The competition has proved to be an eye-opener in more ways than one. “So far our experience with ‘Dreams Get Real’ is beyond our expectations.”
JBK
Also part of the Top 6 is JBK who released the love song “Anong Meron Ka,” composed by Urie Tesorio who is behind the hits “Hayop sa Ganda” and “Ikaw at Ako” of 1:43. Hailing from Mandaluyong City, the trio is composed of Joshua Bulot, Bryan del Rosario and Kim Ordonio. They have a variety of influences that include The Wanted, One Direction, All4one, Boys2Men, Bruno Mars, Jason Mraz and Emblem3, among others.

It was the competition that prompted the three friends to create a group and show their musical skills. “The tagline itself, ‘Dreams Get Real,’ prompted us to join the competition,” says Joshua. “We want that dream to get real. And knowing McJIM is there to back us up, we are very lucky be given an opportunity to represent an undeniably great brand.”
Neo Domingo
Last but not the least is Neo Domingo whose impressive vocals gave life to “Pagbigyan Mo Na,” also penned by Tesorio. Neo is Epifanio Domingo III from Quezon City who plays acoustic pop rock and R&B music and admires John Mayer, Jason Mraz, Bruno Mars and Gary Valenciano. The competition is a way for him to showcase his own composition and hopefully achieve success in the industry and “promote OPM” to a large audience.

The grand champion of the Dreams Get Real talent search will receive cash prize worth P50,000 from McJim Classic Leather, a recording and management contract, and a grant to record a single and release a music video. The Grand Winner will receive P50,000 in cash, a recording and management contract, and a grant to have the official music video of a single. The second placer will win P25,000 in cash and a trophy, while the third place winner will receive P15,000 in cash and a trophy.

“McJim Classic Leather is pulling all the stops in creating a memorable show during the Finals Night,” says Cahilig. “Having gone through an extensive, rigorous search, the Top 6 are poised to have the biggest performance in their budding musical careers. Only one will emerge as winner but I’m confident that, with the right attitude and motivation, all of them will stake their claims in the music industry.”

Noel Cabangon gives in to fans’ request in “Acoustic Noel”

One of my fave twits last week is Noel Cabangon's twitter dated January 4!

Late last year, Noel Cabangon asked his fans on what songs they want the singer-songwriter to record for his new album. This new record, produced by Universal Records, contains Noel’s refreshing take on 12 modern classics.

Unlike his multi-platinum albums “Byahe” and “Tuloy Ang Byahe,” “Acoustic Noel” covers OPM classics from various decades.

The album opens with Noel’s take on Ogie Alcasid’s classic “Nandito Ako,” which is also the carrier single of the album. The singer-songwriter’s vocals soars in his rendition of Rivermaya’s “Himala.”

Noel turns sentimental in ballads like Basil Valdez’s “Araw, Gabi,” Aiza Seguerra’s and “Pagdating Ng Panahon.”

He also breathe new life to band hits like Parokya Ni Edgar’s “Harana,” Rizal Underground’s “Bilanggo,” and Eraserheads’ “Huwag Mo Nang Itanong.”

OPM classics also made it to the list – APO’s “Tuyo Nang Damdamin,” and Asin’s “Itanong Mo Sa Mga Bata.”

Noel’s previously-recorded songs, “Nag-iisa, Wala Ka Na” and “Awit ng Bahaghari,” have been given new versions in the album.

1. NANDITO AKO (originally popularized by Ogie Alcasid)
2. PAGDATING NG PANAHON (originally popularized by Aiza Seguerra)
3. HIMALA (originally popularized by Rivermaya)
4. ARAW GABI (originally popularized by Basil Valdez)
5. HARANA (originally popularized by Parokya Ni Edgar)
6. AWIT NG BAHAGHARI
7. MAKITA KANG MULI (originally popularized by Sugarfree)
8. TUYO NA’NG DAMDAMIN (originally popularized by APO Hiking Society)
9. BILANGGO (originally popularized by Rizal Underground)
10. ITANONG MO SA MGA BATA (originally popularized by Asin)
11. HUWAG MO NANG ITANONG (originally popularized by Eraserheads)
12. NAG-IISA, WALA KA NA

Japanese singer AISAKU in love with Filipino Culure, Humor, Family Ties and OPM!

AISAKU is a pure Japanese who sings Tagalog and Japanese oldies and favorites with a taste of Jazz. Honed to be the next Ted Ito, Aisaku performs with a Filipino twist of Tagalog oldies and favorites.

Recently released his own rendition of the 90s classic pop ballad, Ted Ito's Diamond Hit record “Ikaw Pa Rin.” The choice is not merely because it's of Japanese origin. But ironically due to his high regard for OPM, with him even counting Gary Valenciano as his main musical influence.

AISAKU
“I know more OPM than Japanese songs now. I have more Filipino friends than Japanese friends on Facebook. And I guess I am a Filipino by heart even though my pair of eyes makes me look like I'm asleep,” Aisaku said.

His name interestingly meaning “make love,” Aisaku recently put out his self-titled debut album of OPM classic covers led by “Ikaw Pa Rin,” (popularized by Ted Ito and originally “Saigo No Iwake” in Japanese). His cover of the song won “Best OPM Cover” at the 2013 Gawad Musika Awards & Consumers Quality Awards.

The album package is produced by Janette Ito of Japan's i&i Records in tie-up with Japan Home Centre and distributed by Universal Records Philippines.

Born from a Christian family, this pure Japanese moved to the Philippines years back and the long stretch made him a Pinoy by heart. He takes pride that his knowledge in the Filipino culture and language is almost on a native level.

He shared, "Modern OPM music is something I really love. I give credit to OPM artists who bring the genre to a new level of classy music, like my current favorites Noel Cabangon, Sitti, Gloc-9, JayR, Ogie Alcasid, and a whole lot more!"

He confirmed his utmost respect for Mr. Pure Energy, "My most favorite singer is Gary Valenciano. I live in a church so I had the chance to learn good music first from Gary V's songs. His music covers a lot of genre from pop, dance, soul, jazz to ballads. The first live concert I ever watched in my life was his as well."

Aisaku actually is a combination of two separate words: "AI" which is another word for love, and "Saku" meaning "to make". His parents want him to be "a person who can spread love to the world."

IKAW PA RIN - AISAKU (Official Music Video)

This Japanese trying his best to sing in smooth Tagalog appeared on Lucky Me’s KARI & PO-KU advert. He also endorsed Platinum Karaoke, with his songs already available on the karaoke itself and iTunes. As a child he had speech impairment. Then he met a speech therapist from Operation Smile who helped him with his condition. He is now one of its ambassadors.

Other songs in Aisaku's album are “Remember Me” (popularized by Renz Verano), “Honey My Love So Sweet” (popularized by April Boyz), “Isang Tanong Isang Sagot” (Popularized by Donna Cruz), “Isang Mundo, Isang Awit” (popularized by Leah Navarro), and other Tagalog songs of Japanese roots.

Vocal about his love for Filipinos. He explained, “I find the Filipinos more fun to be with, and the country itself as well. I love the Filipino humor, the culture, and the best of all, the close family ties. I love my parents and I am glad that I know how to show my love to them like a Filipino son can do.”

With his talent and charm, Aisaku already bagged a number of awards, including the 2013 Asian Star Entertainer Awards for Best New Male OPM Artist. He will host and perform at the Little Tokyo Sunday Festival in Makati (Pasong Tamo near Makati Cinema Square) on November 24, 6 pm.

Callalily and 6cyclemind join forces to "Switch!" on June 7

Two of Philippine’s hottest bands Callalily and 6cyclemind join forces to bring you “SWITCH”, one of this year’s most anticipated events in the local music industry. This is their very first time, back-to-back major concert!

This SWITCH will be held on June 7, 2013 at the Music Museum. Audience should look forward to this special back-to-back concert as it will feature both bands’ hits and exciting surprises! Get to experience what “SWITCH” is all about!
During the mini TV press and bloggers conference last Tuesday, May 7, 2013 held at Sir Boy's Food Republic, Panay Quezon City,  Kean Cipriano and Tutti Caringal shared to us that the SWITCH idea started when Callalily and 6cyclemind were doing regular back-to-back shows in 70’s bistro. The response from fans were positive that they asked “Why not bring this to a bigger platform and make it a major concert?!”.

This will definitely be a great way to give back to their fans and treat them to an extraordinary show.

SWITCH will also showcase the brotherhood between the two bands. The Callalily boys comprised of Kean Cipriano, Aaron Ricafrente, Lemuel Belaro and Tatsi Jamnague consider the 6cyclemind boys (Tutti Caringal, Bobby Cañamo, Rye Sarmiento, Herbert Hernandez and Vic Aquino) as one of their mentors who introduced them in the local music industry when they were still starting out. Both bands have come a long way but it will be good to know that their relationship has strengthened throughout the years.

This is an important event not only for Callalily and 6cyclemind but also for the local music industry in general as it will show that fans are still supportive of local artists in spite of the influx of foreign acts and that there are more good things to look forward to in Filipino music.

All Good with Asia’s diamond soul siren Nina

Nina,  hitmaker and Asia’s diamond soul siren is back! She set the bar high for female singers of her generation with the multi-platinum success of her solo albums in the mid-2000s. No doubt it was Nina's flamboyant singing, coupled with impeccable technique, and the right material, that propelled all those albums to dizzying heights.
But it's a more mature Nina that we hear on “All Good,” and there's not a wasted space in this album as Nina gets it going from start to finish. The singer begins her new journey with a brand new original: the mellow pop ballad “All Good,” that is sure to be a new favorite among Nina fans and will surely turn new ears onto the singer as well.

This is certainly good news for her multitude of fans as Nina returns to form and rekindle her love for evocative ballads in her brand new album entitled “All Good,” under Viva Records.

ALL GOOD: NINA
1. MAYBE IT’S TOO SOON
2. SA ISANG TINGIN
3. PERFECT
4. KUNG WALANG IKAW, WALANG AKO
5. MAHAL NA MAHAL KITA
6. ALL GOOD
7. MAKE IT UP TO YOU
8. SAD
9. PAANO
10. WHEN THE LOVE IS GONE
11. HURTING INSIDE
12. PINILIT KONG LIMUTIN KA

BONUS TRACK:

DON’T SAY GOODBYE
(theme song from the movie
“A SECRET AFFAIR”)

Nina unveils a couple of brand new Tagalog songs in her new set, starting with the heart-tugging ballad “Paano,” and then there's the equally emotional love song “Sa Isang Tingin.” Adding to these are “Pinilit Kong Limutin Ka,” and “Kung Walang Ikaw, Walang Ako,”-- all brand new songs—that are sure to make OPM lovers swoon and sway.

Complementing these tunes are the reflective “Maybe It's Too Soon,” and “When The Love Is Gone,” the latter of which sees the relatively-relaxed Diva belting it out a little, but with an oh-so-powerful result! Nina also employs some choice covers as well with the inclusion of her soulful take on “Hurting Inside,” a re-imagining of the ‘90s pop gem “Perfect,” the OPM favorite “Mahal Na Mahal Kita,” and finally, the yearning classic “Don't Say Goodbye,” that many now relate to as the theme to the hit movie "A Secret Affair."

“All Good” is a suite of beautiful songs and is definitely Nina's strongest album in years! A must-hear! --as it is an understated but powerful new album from one of the great female singers of our generation!

Three OPM acts to watch out for in 2013

There are three Original Pilipino Music (OPM) acts that you must watch out for this year 2013!
Young, talented, and oozing with mass appeal, they are a glimpse of the future of the Philippine music industry.

We’re talking about rock band Letter Day Story, balladeer-songwriter Myrus, and boy band 1:43 (pronounced as “one forty-three”). These three, who are all managed by public relations and social media expert Chris Cahilig, have been making waves across all media platforms.

LETTER DAY STORY, composed of rockers Aldrick “Dex” Yu, John Oliver “Oli” Agustin,  Chrisanthony “Not” Vinzons, and Emil Joseph “EJ” Arabit, won the Best Rock/Alternative Recording trophy at the 2012 Awit Awards for their song “Save Me.” They won over the other nominees, who are all more established and highly-respected bands and solo artists.
Their latest digital single, “Maiwang Mag-isa” written by Agustin is currently receiving a lot of airplay over radio stations nationwide.

Earlier, Letter Day Story also won at the 2010 Awit Awards for their song “Martilyo,” which they recorded with Gloc-9, also for Best Rock/Alternative Recording.

They’ve recorded 11 singles that all made it to the Pinoy MYX Countdown. They released three albums namely “Sulat Aral Kuwento,” “Sama-Sama,” and “Breakaway” all from Sony Music. Likewise, they endorsed brands including Revicon Forte, Mossimo, Vans and AXN.

They’ve also appeared in many TV shows including “Umagang Kay Ganda”, “Unang Hirit”, “Music Uplate @ ABS-CBN” and have performed in major shows organized by MTV, MYX, and Alliance Francais (Fete dela Musique).

MYRUS, who delighted listeners with his remake of the 1970s love song “Sayang” (originally by Claire dela Fuente) has reinvented himself from being one of our most favorite romantic balladeers into one of the country’s most sought-after singer-songwriters.
In 2012, Myrus has released a critically acclaimed album titled “Wanted: Just Alive” featuring his original compositions “Pusong Lito” and “Sige Na Nga.” An intriguing song about being torn between two beloved, “Pusong Lito” became a monster hit and was named as the No 5 most popular OPM song in 2012 by the Philippine Music Charts. It was also used as a soundtrack of Pinoy Big Brother (PBB) Teen Edition in ABS-CBN and its official music video and lyric videos has garnered over 10 million views in Youtube so far.

In a few weeks, the public will hear three of Myrus’ compositions as soundtracks of the most anticipated primetime soaps in ABS-CBN. His original composition for his co-talents 1:43, “Sa Isang Sulyap Mo” will be one of the soundtracks of Coco Martin’s new fantaserye “Juan dela Cruz” while “Pusong Lito” and his new hit single “Hiling” will be included in Angeline Quinto’s romantic comedy soap, “Kahit Konting Pagtingin.”

Myrus has proven himself not only as a singer, songwriter, vocal arranger, producer and creative artist but also as an effective and dedicated advocate for the local music industry. He earned everyone’s respect as an OPM activist during his stint as the Project Head of “Tunog Natin.” In December, Myrus was declared as a UH Morning Star by the GMA-7 morning show, “Unang Hirit.”

Myrus is acclaimed as “The Sentimental Prince of OPM” because of his romantic flair and smooth vocals. He has won prestigious awards including a Gold Record for his debut album “Love Cycle” under Sony Music, an ASAP 24K Artist Award, the Top Entertainment Award for Best RnB Artist and nominations in the 2010 Awit Awards and the First Philippine Radio Music Awards.

1:43 (ONE FORTY-THREE) is currently the hottest and most popular boy band in the Philippines, and they have steadily and impressively expanded their fan base in just two years.
The 1:43 hit, “Sa Isang Sulyap Mo” has topped numerous year-end music charts of 2012 and the song’s music video was hailed as one of the Most Viral Videos of 2012 according to YouTube Philippines. To date, its official music video, reposts and lyric videos have received over 30 million views on Youtube. It is also one of the most downloaded songs in MyMusicStore, Videokeman, iTunes Philippines, and Sun Cellular and ranked No 2 in the Philippine Music Charts tally for 2012, next to Gloc-9’s “Sirena.”

The best thing about 1:43 is that they are living proof that Filipino talents can successfully hold their own against the K-Pop fever. Their powerful mass appeal led to their guestings in “ASAP,” “KrisTV,” and in “Sarah G” to name a few. 1:43 have been declared as one of the UH Morning Stars of the GMA-7 morning show, “Unang Hirit”.

Composed of Anjo Resurreccion; Goldmon Aquino; Kent Malunda; and Yuki Sakamoto have recorded two albums-- “Time for Love” and “Sa Isang Sulyap Mo” under MCA Music and were included in OPM compilation albums “Tunog Natin: Songs from Home” and “40 Most Requested Love Songs.” They have been nominated twice in the Awit Awards for Best Christmas Song and Best New Group.

The boys of 1:43 are expected to duplicate their success in 2012 with the chart-topping single “Halika Na” and numerous product endorsements line-up.

With the popularity of foreign musical acts in the Philippines, it’s inspiring to know that there are still original Filipino acts like these three, that are going strong and holding up high the banner for OPM.
