The Philippines today is at the cusp of new and great opportunities.

With the impending rise to power of new national leaders, the emergence of a more vigilant Filipino people, the advent of the ASEAN integration, and overall improvements in various global and national indicators, the challenge is not anymore survival, or development, but to ride the momentum.

The call of the hour is to bring the country to new and greater heights, towards sustainable prosperity. The greater need is to deliver inclusive growth for all Filipinos. The mandate for PMAP is to strategically position people – Filipino human capital, as the main driver of the movement

Why is PMAP an institution in the modelling industry? What is a MODÉLE?

From left to right: Renee Salud, Project Director Angel Agustin-Co, outgoing PMAP President Mary Jane “MJ” Torres, President of Zen Institute Raphael Kiefer, PMAP President.

In response to what they believed were conditions in the fashion-modeling industry that needed to be professionalized, top-caliber models founded the Professional Models Association of the Philippines, or PMAP, in 1987. They sought for reasonable working hours and standardized compensation for model bookings. “As a union we are vocal with our rights. As an association, we have a vision of what we want to become in the future,” says one of the original members, Tina Maristela-Ocampo, who co-founded the organization with co-models Ronnie Asuncion and Robert David.

PMAP is the very first of its kind in Asia, and probably the world. It is the only organization of models run by models themselves, each confident of their own talents, abilities and capabilities to manage and plan their modeling careers. Established on February 11, 1987, the PMAP aims to “uplift, protect and professionalize the modeling industry in the Philippines, and to develop and stabilize, national and international awareness, participation, involvement and competition in the field of modeling.”

The PMAP served as a key force in the development and upgrading of the local modeling industry, with the firm belief that as a united group, models can band and work together for their own protection and progress. Contrary to some beliefs, the PMAP is not an agency but a cross between an association and a union of models. Succeeding members of PMAP have sought to maintain and improve these standards, seeking the professional services of legal and financial consultants.

PMAP male and female models are distinguished for their physical attributes (clear skin, healthy hair, great height and good looks) as well as their overall attitude and disposition. They are well paid, high profile and top of mind among designers and clients.

More often than not, a PMAP model has a prominent place in the industry. Their faces are splashed across top fashion magazine covers, national advertisements, international commercials and fashion shows here and abroad.

They are trailblazers (Tina Maristela, Tetta Ortiz, Suyene Chi, Leo Rabago, JB Abesamis, Annette Coronel); beauty queens (Izza Gonzalez, Desiree Verdadero, Marilen Espino, Abbygala Arenas, Gem Padilla, Mafae Yunon, Valerie Wiegmann); icons (Tweetie de Leon, Patty Bettita, Marina Benipayo, Denden Abesamis, Wilma Doesnt) and a roster of celebrities (Eric Quizon, John Estrada, Ornussa Cadness, Sanya Smith, Phoemela Baranda).

MODÉLE PHILIPPINES

On its 28th year, PMAP is on the hunt to discover and mentor aspiring or experienced models with immense potential to become the next Filipino model archetype and influence the course of professional modeling in the Philippines. Girls must at least be 5’8 tall with a waistline of 24 inches, while the boys must at least be 5’11 tall.

A Modéle Philippines can advance any designer’s vision. He or she possesses fierce catwalk skills, a compelling editorial presence, a memorable screen register and a strong social media following.

This game-changing project employs a tripartite arrangement among the entities of Zen Institute (presenter) and A Concept (producer) and legendary designer/model discover Renee Salud in partnership with PMAP.

Together, their vision is to be “the inspiring trailblazers in the Philippine fashion industry that provide a premiere competition platform and opportunities to individuals who best represent what a professional Filipino model is and what Philippine modeling is in the global arena.”

Their mission is to “discover, develop, and nurture Filipino individuals to become models of influence who represent the Filipino image of excellence through our competitions. We create continuous opportunities for our professional models in order to achieve excellence and secure a great future, thus contribute to our country’s positive image and progress.”

The first Modèle Philippines winner will receive a high level of exposure in the modeling world, the opportunity to work with the industry’s best, a one-year endorsement contract with Zen Institute, a fashion spread in a top fashion magazine, free trip to Thailand and a cash prizes.

Visit or call MODÈLE PHILIPPINES for inquiries at The Zen Institute at 024122528 / 024411712.

Healthway Medical, PMAP celebrate National Wellness Day

Healthway Medical, the country’s trusted and most preferred network of mall-based clinics, celebrated National Wellness Day on June 20, 2014, together with the People Management Association of the Philippines (PMAP).
In photo are (L-R): April Faraon, Healthway Medical Physical Therapy head; Maharlica Naco, Healthway Medical assistant manager for Health and Safety; Mitch Guce, trustee for Fellowship and Wellness, PMAP; and Carmie de Leon, Healthway Medical vice president for Sales and Marketing.

Healthway Medical joined PMAP in the movement to create a fit and healthy working environment for employees through a day that walked and talked everything about wellness. With a program that consisted of a learning session on work-life balance, followed by a workout Zumba session, Healthway stressed the importance of holistic wellness.

“Healthway Medical has always been an advocate of wellness,” says Carmie de Leon, Healthway Medical vice president for Sales and Marketing.

“Today’s exercises will help our employees stay healthy and productive in and out of the workplace,” she adds.

Healthway Medical’s National Wellness Day celebration started with a short lecture from Physical Therapy Head, April Faraon, on Workplace Ergonomics. The talk emphasized the need to be healthy and active as well as shared different exercises employees can do even in the workplace.

The session also included a demonstration of PMAP’s 7-minute Wellness Moment, which involves stretching or self-massage, followed by prayer or meditation, dancing, jogging, or jumping in place, and clapping, laughing, and sharing handshakes with colleagues.

PMAP encouraged both member and nonmember companies to create a video of their employees doing the exercise simultaneously on June 21 at exactly 3 pm to create a worldwide wellness movement.

After the learning session, the participants joined in on a thrilling Zumba dance class, which Healthway Medical employees have been doing three times a week to show their consistent efforts in promoting health and wellness.

For the past 10 years, Healthway Medical has been working with PMAP to actively improve workplace wellness through career development forums and training programs.

“Healthway Medical has always been in the frontier of promoting health and wellness in the workplace,” says Mitch Guce, PMAP’s trustee for Fellowship and Wellness. “They have always been an avid supporter of the health and wellness programs of PMAP.”

This partnership between Healthway Medical and PMAP aims to encourage more individuals to not only celebrate National Wellness Day every third Friday of June but also to empower them to take health and wellness principles and apply them in their homes and workplaces.

ASEAN Integration: Are We Ready to Run with the Tigers?

It has been years that the Philippines dubbed as the next tiger economy in the region. With the impending broad-based integration amongst member countries, how ready are we to run along with the more established states?

Are We Ready to Run with the Tigers?

The PMAP Annual Conference Directorate (L-R): Senior Adviser and PMAP Past President Barbie Atienza, DPM; Fellowship Sub-Chair Gwen C. Albarraccin; PR and Publicity Sub-Chair Bernardette M. Cunanan; Sub-Chair for Invitation and Protocol Emma Valeros-Cruz; Sub-Chair for Concurrent Sessions Gilbert T. Camasura, AFPM; Conference Chair and PMAP Vice President Luz Co-Laguitao, FPM; PMAP President Atty. Josephus B. Jiminez, FPM; Programs Deputy Chair and PMAP Past President Bong C. Austrero; Ways and Means Director and Past President Lina A. Aseneta, FPM; Ways and Means Sub-Chair and PMAP Secretary Maria Lourdes L. Fernando, FPM; PR and Publicity Director Jesse Francis N. Rebustillo; and Awards Director and PMAP Treasurer Teresita E. Dela Cruz, AFPM.

The borderless future is today. With it comes a torrent of opportunities and parallel challenges that usher in a more complex and ambiguous world. Some turn to speed as the best response. Others bet on flexibility, and in this introspection find the enormous potential of a network with people at its center.

Come 2015, that network of potential will realize itself as the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) actualizes its vision of an integrated bloc to navigate the intricacies of a globalized world. ASEAN 2015 – the integration of Southeast Asia into one defense, cultural and economic community – signals our collective response to leverage on shared strengths.

With the aim of helping in strengthening our country’s competitiveness and sustain our growth momentum, the People Management Association of the Philippines (PMAP), the premier organization of people managers and HR professionals in the Philippines, has launched its 51st Annual Conference during the 593rd PMAP General Membership Meeting at Hotel Intercon, Makati City last February 26. This year’s theme is “Running with Tigers: Shared Identity, Common Destiny.”

The 2014 Annual Conference, which will be held at Waterfront Hotel – Lahug in Cebu from 17 to 19 September 2014, zeroes in on this journey as we reach out to our neighboring countries and chart the best business and People Management approaches to strengthen our competitiveness and sustain our growth momentum. We take our place in the league of ASEAN’s economic tigers as we run a race that fosters a shared identity and realize a common destiny. And at the heart of this integration is our belief in ASEAN’s caring and sharing community that values its people and aspires for equitable growth.

During the PMAP GMM, distinguished speakers presented timely topics that serve as drum rolls for bigger things to come at the conference in September. Convergys Corporation Managing Director for Asia and EMEA Marife B. Zamora talked about “Philippines Best HR Practices: What Makes Philippines Stand Out amongst the Other ASEAN Countries.” UP School School of Labor and Industrial Relations Dean Dr. Jonathan P. Sale meanwhile shared “Comparative Analysis of Labor Laws Across Ten ASEAN Nations: From Hiring to Retiring.”

Faced with these regional and global imperatives, PMAP commits a three-day learning event animated by relevance, novelty and balance which will touch on Strategic HR vs. Operational and Functional HR; Trends vs. Core HR Competencies; Best Practices vs. New Ideas and HR Innovation; Issues and Challenges vs. Skills; Global Mindset vs. Local Pre-occupation; and other relevant topic.

As we brace ourselves for ASEAN 2015, we reaffirm our stand as People Managers and recognize that we are indeed "Running with Tigers" toward a Common Identity and a Shared Destiny.

50th PMAP Annual Conference: Global Opportunities. Leaping Forward. Defying Limits.

The global economic landscape is seeing a new dawn, with Asia as its center and the Philippines, its sweet spot. The turnaround could not have come at a more opportune time.

A young Filipino workforce is raring to go and governance is breaking through a renaissance of accountability and transparency. The message is unequivocal: We are open for business! It’s all systems go.

This year, the People Management Association of the Philippines (PMAP) will hold its Annual Conference that recognizes a challenge: the country is at the center of Global Opportunities. But more than recognizing that reality, we see it as our mandate. There’s no other way but to seize these possibilities. We are now at the brink of living our dreams and imaginings. There are no excuses. This time, we have to make it work!

The horizon has opened up and all eyes are on the Philippines as the world’s new economic tiger. The ball’s on our court and the challenge is to leap forward. We can no longer afford to move at our current pace. Catch-up, leapfrog… that is what we should do. But to realize this, we need to defy limits, break free from our self-imposed restrictions that used to define who we are and what we can do.
Members of 50th PMAP Annual Conference Directorate doing the thumbs up sign to signify
that everything is in full gear at the launch of the country’s biggest HR event.

As we usher in this golden year of the PMAP Annual Conference, the organization take stock of the rich mine of ideas in our sharing and learning community. Fifty years of thought leadership, advocacy and camaraderie. A story that in this milestone year turns into our quest for GOLD.

“We EXPLORE the terrain as we paint the global economic landscape, create strategies, and search for talent. We MINE our collective experience as we extract issues, build consensus, and crystallize our advocacies. We REFINE our practice as we re-examine functional HR competencies. We SMELT the ore of our skills as we deep-dive into focused workshops to forge proficiency, mastery, and leadership. And we SHOWCASE best practices in HR and people management as we celebrate models and successes,” PMAP Vice President and Conference Chair Roberto Policarpio said during the launch.
