Korean-Speaking Agents join DOT's tourist hotline

Beginning in February, tourists can access support from Korean-speaking agents through the Department of Tourism's (DOT) expanded Tourist Assistance Call Center (TACC).

The DOT made the announcement on Saturday (Feb 1) on the expansion of the tourist hotline to provide Korean-speaking support, reflecting the Department's commitment to enhancing service for travelers from South Korea, the country’s largest source of inbound tourists.

Inquiring travelers can now receive direct assistance from a dedicated Korean-speaking agent available Monday to Friday, from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM (Philippine Standard Time).

“As South Korea continues to be our top inbound market, this initiative ensures that Korean travelers can easily access assistance, allowing them to fully enjoy the warmth, hospitality, and attractions that make the Philippines a destination to love,” stated Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco. “In alignment with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s vision of a digitally empowered government, the DOT is dedicated to improving its platforms to deliver accessible, efficient, and world-class service to all tourists, both domestic and international.”

This enhancement aligns with the government's broader goal of digitizing public services, promoting a seamless, responsive, and tech-driven approach to tourist assistance.

The TACC has facilitated over 13,502 transactions as of January 30, 2025, servicing tourists from 71 different nationalities, with the Philippines, the United States, and Australia being the most represented. Common inquiries include general tourism questions, travel and tour services, DOT accreditation, and career opportunities.

A flagship program of the DOT under Secretary Frasco, the TACC was recognized as one of Asia’s premier customer support platforms, and was recently awarded "Best in Service – Customer Support (Regional Level)’ award at the prestigious Asia Best of Best Awards 2024 at Westin Dubai, Mina Seyahi Beach Resort & Marina, Dubai UAE.

In its ongoing commitment to tourist convenience and inclusivity, "the DOT is working to expand multilingual support services including Mandarin and other languages for a more diverse range of travelers. We understand the role of language accessibility in creating a smooth and enjoyable travel experience,” added Secretary Frasco.

In 2024, the Philippines welcomed 1,574,152 visitors from South Korea, representing an 8.1% increase from 1,455,977 arrivals in 2023. This figure also indicates a 2.5% growth compared to the 1,539,402 arrivals in 2019, demonstrating a complete recovery that has surpassed pre-pandemic levels. South Korea remains the Philippines’ largest source of foreign visitors, capturing over 26.46% of the total tourist arrivals.

For seamless and responsive assistance, tourists can contact the TACC through various platforms. The DOT emphasizes the updated mobile hotline at +63 954-253-3215, ensuring a more efficient communication channel for travelers. Additionally, landline users can reach the center via 151-TOUR (151-8687), while inquiries can also be sent via email at touristassistance@tourism.gov.ph

For real-time assistance, travelers may connect through Facebook Messenger at Department of Tourism – Philippines or utilize the Click2Call and Live Webchat services available on beta.tourism.gov.ph.

Tanaw Collective celebrates new beginnings in debut single “Landslide”

Acel Bisa, Aia de Leon, Barbie Almalbis, Hannah Romawac, Kitchie Nadal, and Lougee Basabas bring new meaning to a timeless classic

Tanaw Collective, a newly formed supergroup comprised of celebrated singer-songwriters Acel Bisa, Aia de Leon, Barbie Almalbis, Hannah Romawac, Kitchie Nadal, and Lougee Basabas, releases their first official single, “Landslide,” today across all digital music platforms worldwide.

A poignant and minimalist cover of Fleetwood Mac’s iconic 1975 hit, “Landslide” represents their shared sentiment of letting go and embracing new beginnings both in careers and personal lives. The track conveys a collective journey of maturity, acceptance, and spiritual growth, marking another chapter in their musical evolution.

“Landslide is a song that we all know and love,” shares Barbie Almalbis. “I think each of us has covered it at some point. The first version I actually heard was the Smashing Pumpkins cover. I was in high school, and I immediately connected with it. The song’s themes of life, love, and the shifting seasons have only deepened in meaning for us as we’ve all grown older together.”

Aia de Leon recalls the pivotal moment when Hannah Romawac sparked the idea to record the song. “This seems to have launched the habit of us recording songs after we have jammed it,” the Sundo act explains. “I can’t stress enough how awesome it truly is to be able to have all these tools and technology available to artists nowadays. All of us have recording capabilities at different levels. For this track, we recorded in different places—Barbie’s home studio became the hub for Acel, Lougee, and Hannah, while Kitchie recorded her vocal takes with her trusty Rode condenser mic in her home in Spain. I also recorded my vocal tracks here from home on the south side.”

Almalbis adds, “Recording with the girls is always such a fun experience—50% work and 50% catching up. It’s a blessing to do something we love with people we love.”

The stripped-down version of “Landslide” was mixed and mastered by Angee Rozul and is being distributed via House of Tunes.

Tanaw Collective stands as a testament to the power of women-led collaborations, with this new initiative set to explore a wide range of creative ventures, including collaborative music releases, live performances, and other projects that amplify female voices in the music industry.

Fans can look forward to hearing the special arrangement of “Landslide” live at the Tanaw: The Repeat concert, scheduled for February 9, 2025 (Sunday), at the Newport Performing Arts Theater in Pasay City at 8:00 PM. The sold-out concert celebrates the enduring bond between the iconic artists and their devoted fans, offering new interpretations of their beloved original songs and enhanced by a symphonic backing from The Manila String Machine on select tracks.

Tanaw: The Repeat is presented by Newport World Resorts, co-presented by GNN and Wow Fiesta, with official hotel partner Holiday Inn Express. Major sponsors include JB Music, Ming’s Pei Pa Koa Candy, David’s Salon, Apartment8, and Globatronics, while minor sponsors include Greenwich, Palladium, UGEC, Payaba, and Meiji Chocolates.

This concert marks a monumental moment for Tanaw Collective, as it brings together the talents of these women whose individual and collective contributions have profoundly shaped the Pinoy rock scene for decades.

“Niyebe” at FEU Theater Guild this February 2025

The Far Eastern University Theater Guild (FTG) stages another Gabriel Garcia-Marquez short story as an experimental play for the opening of its 91st season. This groundbreaking production, featuring music and musical direction by Vince Lim, assisted by Jesus Singh III (IAS ‘17) for additional guidance and vocal coaching, choreography by Carlon Matobato, and choreography, adaptation, lyrics, and direction by Dudz Teraña, is set to captivate audiences from February 12 to March 27, 2024.

Against the backdrop of Europe's harsh winter, Niyebe tells the tragic story of newlyweds Billy Sanchez and Nena Deconte, whose honeymoon turns into a nightmare. A small scrape on Nena's finger leads to death! Stranded in a foreign land, Billy grapples with solitude, grief, and despair, forced to confront profound questions about existence, purpose, and identity in the aftermath of his wife’s sudden death. All this while, he battles the relentless bureaucracy that ultimately denies him the chance to see his wife one last time. The play features a dynamic cast with Billy Sanchez played by RB Pascua (IAS ‘25) and Dave Bambang (IARFA ‘29), Nena Deconte by Kesiah Eunice Aritao (IAS ‘25) and Brigitta Claire Marilla (IAS ‘25), and the Narrator by Aaron Bayani (FIT ‘25). The production will also showcase a dynamic ensemble cast, whose collective talent and synergy will enhance the depth and vibrancy of the musical's narrative and performances.

Director and writer Dudz Teraña masterfully adapts García Márquez's story into a compelling theatrical experience that fuses music, movement, and rich storytelling. "Niyebe isn’t just a love story; it’s a reflection of how the fragility of happiness and loss can spiral into a deep existential crisis," says Teraña. "Reimagined as an experimental play, it employs a unique narrative style while delving into societal issues such as class disparity, which inspired García Márquez’s original work. Much like his other works, it speaks on existentialism, the questioning of one’s purpose after a sudden loss, and the wanting of escapism triggered by this loss."

The show's brilliance lies not only in its powerful performances but also in the dedicated work of its creative and production team. From the seamless execution by Stage Manager Maria Ysabel Delos Reyes (IAS ‘27) to the logistical coordination of Production Manager Janah Gervacio (IHSN ‘26), and House Manager Hans Fernandez, every aspect of the show is meticulously managed. The production’s aesthetic vision is brought to life by Production Design Head Kirstan Orbegoso (IAS ‘28) and Costume Designer Margarita Barrameda (IAS ‘26), and the technical team led by Technical Head Kristian Samson (IAS ‘26), with lighting design by Arvin Javier (IAS ‘28), sound by Gab Lazaro (FIT ‘27), and video projections by Shawn Tarala (IAS ‘27). Offstage, the show is supported by Marketing Relations Head Cassandra Herilla (IAS ‘27), Creative Head Julia Nicole Ramas (FIT ‘27), Multimedia Heads Davewyn Macawile (IAS ‘25) and Millicent Roxas (IAS ‘25), Media Relations Head Heleina Li (IAS ‘27), Collaborative Relations Head Irish Oliveros (IAS ‘28), and Social Media Manager Renz Dotillos (IAS ‘26), ensuring that Niyebe resonates with audiences both on and off the stage.

With a unique blend of captivating performances, evocative music, and innovative design, Niyebe is more than just a musical—it’s a deeply moving exploration of love and loss. It will run at the FEU Center for the Arts Studio on the following dates:

        February: 12-13, 19-22, 26-28

        March: 1, 5-8, 12-15, 19-22, 26-27

Prices are 100 PHP for the FEU Community, 300 PHP for student Guests, 500 PHP for Regulars, and 700 PHP for VIPs. For reservations and inquiries, please contact the FTG through their social media pages:

Monterde’s heartfelt ballads and signature acoustic sound have won over a loyal fan base, and the overwhelming demand for his concert cements his place as one of OPM’s most beloved voices.

Cup of Joe’s ‘Silakbo’ ignites fans for two sold-out nights

Following their steady rise in the OPM scene, Cup of Joe is taking things to the next level with Silakbo: Featuring Cup of Joe on February 8 and 9. The band’s first-ever arena concert has already sold out, proving the immense following they’ve built with their distinct blend of indie, pop, and rock. The Corrs: Manila’s love affair with the Irish icons continues

Filipinos’ enduring love for The Corrs is on full display as the Irish siblings return to Manila for From Manila With Love on February 15 and 16. The group’s two-night affair at the Big Dome sold out in record time, proving that their blend of Celtic folk and pop remains as timeless as ever. For many, it’s a nostalgic trip back to the golden era of ‘90s music—one that Pinoy fans clearly don’t want to miss.

Kenvue Philippines Collaborates with Department of Health to Elevate Oral Health Awareness in the Philippines

Kenvue, a global leader in health and wellness products, is collaborating with the Department of Health (DOH) supported by American Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines (AmCham) to champion the importance of comprehensive oral care and reduce the alarming prevalence of oral health issues in the country. Together, they aim to create healthier, brighter smiles for all Filipinos.

The American Chamber of Commerce and Kenvue Philippines award Certificates and Tokens of Appreciation to the Oral Care Experts Panel after the discussion and audience Q&A.

From Left to Right: Winston Elliot Senior Manager for Regulatory Affairs, Grace Mendoza Head of Healthcare Professional Marketing, Aldellyn Po Self-Care and Oral Franchise Lead, Penn Policarpio Managing Director of Kenvue Philippines and Indonesia, Dr.Jose B. Salazar Board of Trustee of the Philippine Pediatric Society (PPS), Director of the PPS Council on Community Services and Child Advocacy ; Dr. Noel Vallesteros, Chief, Oral Health & Nutrition Care Division (OHNCD), Disease Prevention & Control Bureau, Department of Health; Dr. Limuel Anthony B. Abrogena, Executive Secretary of the Philippine Academy of Family Physicians (PAFP), Former Chairperson of the PAFP Committee on Basic Medical Education and Committee on Informatics and Publicity, Dr. Arlene dela Cruz Medina, President Elect, Philippine Pediatric Dental Society; Dr. Gay Raralio, President, Philippine Pediatric Dental Society; ; Jose Angelo G. Militante, Past President Philippine Dental Association and Philippine College of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons; Elaine Pallasigui,Healthcare Professional Senior Manager for Metro Asia, Dianne Alejo Associate Medical Affairs Manager, Junho Kim, Marketing Director

The current state of oral health in the Philippines remains a pressing public health concern. According to the 2018 National Survey on Oral Health (NSOH), 80 million Filipinos suffer from tooth decay, a staggering number that places the country among the highest globally for dental caries, as revealed in a 2019 WHO study by Petersen. Additionally, 54 million Filipinos are affected by gum problems, a leading cause of tooth loss, with the average 70-year-old having only seven teeth remaining (Cruz et al., 2019).

Several factors contribute to the nation’s oral health challenges:

  • Accessibility: With a low dentist-to-population ratio and 60% of dentists concentrated in Manila, many areas lack access to adequate dental care.
  • Limited Insurance: The Philippines is predominantly a self-pay country, making preventive dental care financially inaccessible for many.
  • Excessive Sugar Consumption: The average Filipino consumes over 13 tablespoons of sugar daily, nearly triple the recommended amount (Philippine Statistics Authority).
  • Inadequate Oral Health Practice: Proper brushing techniques are not widely practiced and limited awareness of mouthrinse as an important habit to complement brushing and flossing
  • Reactive Dental Visits: Alarmingly, 50% of Filipinos visit a dentist only when they experience oral health problems.

To address these challenges, the DOH has launched the Ngiting 70:20 initiative, which aims to ensure Filipinos retain at least 20 teeth by the age of 70. Key components of this program include:

  • Educational Campaigns: Initiatives like Ibigay ang Ibig ng Bibig promote fluoride toothpaste use, healthy diets, regular dental visits, and proper oral care routines.
  • Dental Home Concept: Making dental services accessible, continuous, and family-centered across all life stages.
  • PhilHealth Support: Expanded partial coverage for preventive oral health services.

Kenvue underscores the importance of holistic oral care by emphasizing gargling with mouthwash as a vital habit to complement brushing and flossing. Research shows that brushing alone cleans only 25% of the mouth. However, adherence to proper brushing techniques is low, with most individuals brushing for just 48 seconds instead of the recommended two minutes. Moreover, only 2% to 10% floss effectively, with daily flossing being even rarer, the importance of mouthrinse has limited awareness, therefore contributing to lack of basic health practice.

To bridge this gap, Kenvue promotes the use of essential oils-based mouthwash, which has been proven to significantly enhance oral health outcomes. A 2022 study by Milleman et al., published by the American Dental Hygienists’ Association, found that incorporating a mouthrinse formulated with four essential oils reduced plaque, gingivitis, and gingival bleeding up to five times more effectively than brushing and flossing alone over a 12-week period. Kenvue also initiates a partnership with Operation Smile to raise awareness about cleft lip and palate, and more importantly, to educate cleft patients and their families on the importance of good oral hygiene, which we recognize as essential health for all.

Kenvue and the DOH are committed to empowering healthcare professionals with the tools and knowledge needed to guide their patients towards improved oral care routines. Addressing this challenge means reaching not only dental practitioners but also other health care providers like general practitioners, nurses, pharmacists, midwives, paediatricians, and family medicine practitioners to provide awareness and immediate action. Together, they aim to combat tooth loss and promote healthy smiles across all age groups.

“At Kenvue, we believe that oral health is the key component of overall health. By working alongside DOH and AmCham, we hope to make proper oral care accessible and actionable for every Filipino,” said Penn Policarpio, Managing Director Philippines and Indonesia.

“Ano ba ang katotohanan?”: an all-original Filipino musical set to unveil a new perspective on the greatest story ever told

In an era where misinformation spreads faster than light and truth seems to wear many faces, the question asked over 2,000 years ago by one of the most divisive persons in history still reverberates with haunting relevance: “Ano ba ang katotohanan?” This serves as the heartbeat of Pilato, an all-original Filipino musical set to captivate audiences this April at the PETA Theater Center.

With its daring perspective and poignant relevance, the production revisits the so-called “greatest story ever told”--the trial and crucifixion of Jesus Christ--through the eyes of Poncio Pilato, a man caught at the crossroads of power, faith, and duty.

The musical traces Pilato’s journey from his early ambitions in Rome to his appointment as prefect of Judea, a province brimming with religious and political unrest. There, Pilato’s every decision is scrutinized by a constellation of figures: the enigmatic historiographer, Josepo; the calculating high priest, Caiaphas; his wise and foreboding wife, Procla; and Hesus, a mysterious and magnetic presence rumored to be the King of the Jews.

In a time when Holy Week invites reflection and as the country approaches the critical 2025 elections, Pilato emerges as a vital meditation on truth in all its complexity. Through haunting melodies and powerful storytelling, it challenges us to confront the choices we make as individuals and as a society.

“Information comes to us in countless forms and modes. But how do we sift through the chaos to uncover the truth? Would we even recognize the truth if we meet it face-to-face?” shares writer-director Eldrin Veloso. “Essentially, that is what the play hopes to put out there--a journey that dares to unravel the mystery of truth’s many faces. With our society on the brink of a post-truth era, I believe this is a story that demands to be told, now more than ever.”

With a cast of seasoned musical theater artists and gifted newcomers, Pilato offers an emotional and intellectual journey unlike any other. It is a poignant reminder that even after two millennia, the search for truth remains both our greatest burden and our ultimate salvation.

This marks the inaugural theatrical venture of The Corner Studio, a creative agency renowned for weaving compelling narratives through its expertise in branding, production, marketing, and design. Now, it steps boldly onto the stage, bringing its storytelling vision to life in a new dimension.

Don’t miss Pilato on April 4 at 8pm for its world premiere and on April 5, 6, 11, 12 and 13 at 3pm and 8pm, at the PETA Theater Center.

Tickets are now available at pilato.helixpay.com. Follow them on social media for updates and behind-the-scenes content.

SYNOPSIS

Set during Roman rule in Judea, the musical examines Pilato’s moral and political struggles as he grapples with his responsibilities as governor, his own ambitions, and the growing presence of Hesus, whose teachings and actions challenge the status quo.

ACT I

Pilato arrives in Judea under the blazing sun of Rome’s ambition, determined to impose imperial order on a land guided by ancient faith. Flashes of his Roman upbringing—his father’s stern lessons in power—flicker through his mind as he strives to shape his own legacy. Josepo, the Jewish historian assigned to document his rule, silently observes Pilato’s struggle to comprehend a people steadfast in their devotion. Clashes erupt when Pilato introduces Roman symbols in Jerusalem, inciting protests led by the High Priest Caiaphas, whose resolve underscores that faith can eclipse any empire’s might. An ambitious aqueduct, built with funds taken from the temple treasury, deepens the city’s outrage and tests Pilato’s leadership. Only Procla, Pilato’s wife, offers a counterpoint to his relentless pursuit of renown, urging leadership in a land brimming with simmering tension. As rumors of a new teacher named Hesus ripple across Judea, Act I closes with the land poised on the brink of an event that will threaten the balance of power, ambition, and even freedom.

ACT II

Against the vibrant backdrop of Pesach, Hesus enters Jerusalem bearing a message of the divine truth that captivates the crowds—some revere him as a prophet, others denounce him as a threat. Caiaphas, wary of the volatile crowds and eager to avert unrest, views Hesus’ teachings as a spark that could ignite rebellion. Upon his manuevering, Hesus is arrested and brought before Pilato. The governor then hopes to shift responsibility by sending him to Herodes, but the mockery that ensues only sends Hesus back, leaving Pilato to weigh the demands of politics against his own moral misgivings. Procla’s dream warns that condemning an innocent man invites dire consequences, yet pressure from advisors and the clamor of the crowd lead Pilato to offer a stark choice: spare Hesus or release another prisoner. The crowd condemns Hesus, forcing Pilato’s hand. In a final, symbolic act, he washes his hands of the sentence, attempting to cleanse himself of guilt as Hesus is led to crucifixion. That is how the story ended.

That’s how we know the story ended. Led by Josepo’s prodding, the play revisits the whole story once more, reading between the lines, poking on the holes, and offering an alternative narrative. Eventually the two figures will have their arguments converge in the point of singularity of this narrative: the echoing question “Ano ba ang katotohanan?”

Fuel Children’s Success and Health This Year with Proper Nutrition

The new year sparks hope for better health outcomes, especially for children, but malnutrition remains a persistent challenge.

Malnutrition continues to jeopardize the growth, development, and overall well-being of Filipino children. Despite progress in healthcare, many still face the effects of undernutrition, vitamin deficiencies, and even obesity—issues often rooted in limited awareness and access to proper resources.

Parents can set their children up for a successful and healthy year ahead by providing them with a strong foundation of proper nutrition and encouraging healthy eating habits.

Fuel children’s growth with the proper nutrients they need to grow strong and thrive this year. Every step forward begins with a solid foundation of health and proper nutrition.

Data from the Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS) and the Second Congressional Commission on Education (EDCOM-2) indicates that one in three Filipino children experiences stunted growth or malnutrition,[1] which can have lasting effects on their physical and cognitive development. Furthermore, the World Bank ranks the Philippines fifth in the East Asia and Pacific region for the highest prevalence of stunting, placing it among the ten countries worldwide with the highest number of stunted children.[2]

One major factor contributing to malnutrition is the lack of proper nutritional guidance, especially during early childhood.[3] This gap leaves children vulnerable to undernourishment during critical early development stages when both body and brain grow rapidly. The long-term consequences of childhood malnutrition, particularly stunting, extend beyond physical limitations, leading to poor cognitive development, lower educational achievement, and decreased productivity in adulthood.[4]

To tackle this issue, we need to understand the root causes of malnutrition. Insufficient dietary intake, suboptimal nutrient absorption, and inefficient nutrient utilization often contribute to undernutrition in various forms, such as stunting (low height-for-age), underweight (low weight-for-age), and wasting (low weight-for-height). [5]

While access to food matters, ensuring that children receive the proper nutrients is essential for combating malnutrition. Parents must provide a balanced diet rich in essential vitamins, minerals, and proteins to support physical and mental growth. Prioritizing nutrition reduces stunting and fosters healthy development.

Healthy growth and development begin in the kitchen. Preparing meals together ensures children get key macronutrients and essential minerals, laying a strong foundation for their well-being while strengthening family connections.

It’s important to focus on key macronutrients and minerals that support children's growth. Protein is essential for children's growth and development as it supports tissue repair and growth in muscles, skin, organs, and more. Including lean meats, dairy, eggs, and legumes in meals ensures adequate intake. Additionally, growth requires extra energy, and underweight children may need additional calories, which should come from nutritious sources like healthy fats, carbohydrates, and protein—not junk food.[6]
Iron and zinc are also crucial for growth. Iron helps deliver oxygen to the body’s cells and supports overall development, with iron-rich foods like meat, eggs, and leafy greens being excellent sources. Zinc plays a key role in cell growth and immune function, and deficiencies can hinder development. Foods like beef, spinach, and beans are good sources of zinc, helping children grow strong and healthy.[7]
In addition, certain nutrients like arginine and vitamin K2 are crucial for growth. Arginine supports bone cell growth and stimulates growth hormone release, aiding in linear growth, especially during delayed development. It can be found in nuts, grains, legumes, meat, seafood, eggs, and dairy products.[8],[9]
Vitamin K2 aids calcium absorption and transport into bones, promoting stronger bones and better bone density. It also supports cardiovascular and dental health and helps regulate blood clotting.[10],[11] Fermented products like yogurt and cheese, along with animal-based foods like meat and eggs, serve as excellent sources of vitamin K2.[12]

While essential nutrients are readily available in everyday foods, it’s beneficial to ensure that children receive ample amounts to support their growing bodies and minds. If necessary, parents should consult their pediatricians for guidance on supplements or formulations that can help meet their child's nutritional needs.

Special formulations like PediaSure Plus, scientifically designed with 37 growth nutrients, including Natural Vitamin K2 for strong bones and added Arginine for faster linear growth, offer targeted support for children's development.[13]

"Understanding and being attentive to your children's dietary needs is vital for their growth and development. Providing a balanced diet that includes essential nutrients like Arginine and Vitamin K2 can promote bone growth and overall physical development. Ensuring they receive proper nutrition through a healthy diet, supplemented with the right formulations when necessary, optimizes their health and helps them reach their full potential," said Dr. Jose Dimaano, Jr., Nutrition Medical director for Asia Pacific at Abbott.

Incorporating Arginine and Vitamin K2 into children’s diets presents an effective approach to addressing stunted growth. By prioritizing these essential nutrients, parents and caregivers can confidently support healthy growth and development of their children, helping them start the year strong and reach their full potential in life.
