SM Global Pinoy and Marina celebrate Filipino Seafarer , Seafaring Industry needs more women – IMO Chief

Calling it the “untapped sector”, the Secretary General of the United Nations International Maritime Office (IMO) pushed for the increased involvement of women in the seafaring industry saying they are the key to the growth of the industry.

Speaking during the International Seafarers Day at the SM Convention Center in Pasay City, IMO Secretary General Ki Tack Lim said the seafaring industry should work towards attracting more women since they have proven to be as equally competent as their male counterparts.
“The importance of women as a huge source of safer sea voyage human resources cannot be overstressed. The shipping world cannot afford to ignore such rich and still largely untapped source of quality recruit,” Lim told some 5,000 marine officers, students and their families who attended the event, sponsored by the SM Global Pinoy Program, held last Saturday, June 25 at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City.

Similar celebrations with Filipino seafarers and MARINA were also held at SM Seaside Cebu and SM City Iloilo with an estimated attendance of close to 1,000.

The Philippines is the world’s capital source of seafarers with some 367,000 Filipino seafarers deployed all over the world but women make up only 2 percent of the world’s maritime workforce of 1.3 million.

Lim said the greater participation of women in the seafaring industry is of vital importance given the fact that the demand for seafarers is expected to further increase in the coming years.

“Looking ahead, the demand for global fleet for seafarers is increasing and predicted to rise even further attracting seafarers particularly officers,” he said.

Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) Deputy Administrator Gloria Banas agreed saying that based on their feedback and evaluation of female cadets and officers in the maritime industry, women have shown a lot of capabilities that make them at par with men.

“The thrust is really gender equality in all professions and that includes the crewing industry and women have been starting to make their presence felt because of their commitment and dedication to their jobs,” she said.

The primary consideration, she added, is their accommodation in the ships since seafaring has been a male-dominated profession since the beginning. “With the issue of accommodation being addressed, we don’t see any reason why more should not join the industry because they have proven to be an asset in any ship,” Banas stated.

Lim also lauded the investments and programs carried out by the Philippine government, through the MARINA to make sure it remains to be the crewing capital of the world.

“This country has made huge collective investments in maritime education and in training over the recent years and the highly specialized training facilities you have put in place showed the commitment you have to retain the so-called crewing capital of the world,” Lim pointed out.

The event, attended by around 5,000 seafarers and their families, marked the first time the IMO head was present in the country and his first visit to Asia since he assumed the post.

As a specialized agency of the United Nations, IMO is the global standard-setting authority for the safety, security and environmental performance of international shipping. Its main role is to create a regulatory framework for the shipping industry that is fair and effective, universally adopted and universally implemented.

Organized in 1948, the IMO currently has 171 Member States and 3 Associate Members.

This year’s theme is “At Sea For All” which highlights the indispensability of the seafarers and the shipping industry to people all over the world.

The International Seafarers’ Day of the seafarer is an official United Nations international observance day which takes place every year on 25 June. It is organized by the IMO and aims to increase awareness among the general public of the world’s 1.3 million seafarers for their unique, and all-too-often overlooked, contribution to the world economy.

The Philippines played a key role in annual observance as the date June 25 was chosen by the IMO during the Manila Convention held in 2010 at the Philippine International Convention Center.

Annie Garcia, President of SM Supermalls said their hosting of the event is part of their commitment to honor the many contributions and sacrifices the Filipino seafarers do for their country and family.
“Thus, we salute our seafarers who stand tall in their tasks; in their duty; in their stewardship of their family. Thus, we have set aside one day every year to give due honor and recognition to seafarers worldwide,” Garcia said.
She also stated that the Global Pinoy Center present in every SM mall is a testament to their commitment to recognize the Filipino seafarer and the other OFWs and their families.
“SM Supermalls has strived over the years to requite the sterling example of the seafarer, including our OFWs whom we deem as our new heroes and pillars of the nation’s economy. Thus, we have established the Global Pinoy Center in every SM Supermall throughout the archipelago (to) cater to (their) needs,” she said.

“Bricks Click: Creating the New Marketplace”: Traditional and digital retail trends discussed in SM’s first Partnership Summit

With the market’s adaptation to digital shopping, traditional retail businesses find it important to keep with the consumer’s growing needs and demands for shopping experience beyond the brick-and-mortar concept.

SM Supermalls used this big idea for its first Partnership Summit titled “Bricks Click: Creating the New Marketplace” to create a venue for deeper discussion among retailers and business partners. The summit was held at the SMX Convention Center of the Mall of Asia Complex.

SM Supermalls President Annie Garcia and Senior Vice-President for Operations Steven Tan together with panelists (second from left) Margot Torres, Executive Vice President, McDonald’s Philippines; Hiebert Dimagiba, Head of Mobile & IT Business, Samsung Philippines; Aitor Gomez Maguregui, Head of New Business Sales, Google Philippines; and Mark Gamboa, Director of Marketing, Max’s Group.
The summit aimed to inspire and motivate players in the retail industry, local and regional, through knowledge sharing and market updates from distinguished experts in the field. During the summit, discussions centered around the impact of social media on businesses; ways to elevate customer experience, and strengthening customer satisfaction.

Esteemed guest speakers included entrepreneur and inspirational speaker Francis Kong, Disney Institute Regional Business Development Manager Wing-Hoe Tan, and Samsung Electronics Vice-President for Online David Kang. Panel discussions further elaborated the topics, with executives and veterans of known companies such as Samsung, Max’s, McDonald’s and Google contributing their insights and business experiences.
Francis Kong
In his presentation, Kong explained that a business should learn to utilize social media and technology not to compete with the traditional way of retail, but to enhance and further develop its reach. Technology, according to Kong, is not the competitor of traditional retail, but its complement.

Entrepreneur and inspirational speaker Francis Kong talked about creating new and meaningful experiences for the customer with the cohesive use of social media with traditional retail.

“Co-existence between analog and click technology can never replace human involvement,” Kong added.

Tan stressed in his speech that positive results and customer delight root from company culture, from how they treat their customers to how they treat their own employees.

Wing-Hoe Tan
A playful moment from Disney Institute’s Wing-Hoe Tan, his session discussing about ensuring delightful service and maintaining good company culture.

“An organization must cultivate the same internal customer service within their employees, gauged with the same intentionality as how they do with their external ones. It is not written on any handbook; rather, it is already imbibed in the employees’ hearts and minds to provide exceptional service,” Tan said.

Kang ended the sessions with his emphasis on how technology heavily influences consumers’ decisions, but in the end, the brick-and-mortar shops are still their preferred way of shopping for their desired products.
David Kang
Samsung Electronics Vice-President for Online David Kang delves deeper into his talk about the cohesive existence of technology and traditional retail to bring another level to the customer’s shopping experience.

There were 1,000 participants who attended the summit, hailing from businesses in the Philippines and abroad, all pioneers and heads of SM’s valued tenant companies.

The partnership summit is one of SM’s projects in line with celebrating its 30th year in the retail industry. SM currently has 55 malls nationwide.

2014 Green Retail Agenda: Disaster-proofing firms discussed in SM forum

The 2014 GREEN RETAIL AGENDA The Business Case for Disaster Risk Reduction Manila, Philippines was held at SMX Convention Center in Pasay City, September 18, 2014.

In the past years, the SM Green Retail Agenda has focused more on climate change mitigation and, to a lesser degree, on adaptation. This year, with the increasing strength and frequency of natural disasters, it is important to create shared value within the private sector.

As a member of the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction – Private Sector Partnerships, SM Supermalls seeks to educate, create awareness, and emphasize action points within the private sector and other key stakeholders to ensure disasters will be prepared for and recovered from.

The theme for this year’s conference is The Business Case for Disaster Risk Reduction, emphasizing the need to prepare for the unforeseen to protect our businesses and the community as a whole. Our roster of speakers will focus on disaster risk resilience, preparedness, tools and best practices to strengthen and empower the retail business and community amidst natural disasters.

Dr. Renato Solidum Jr., director of Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS)
Disaster reduction experts discussed disaster preparedness measures to protect businesses and communities from natural calamities, new technologies in disaster management and communicating disaster preparations at the 2014 Green Retail Agenda, an annual symposium on sustainable business practices by SM Supermalls, held at SMX Convention Center in Pasay City.

Dr. Renato Solidum Jr., director of Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) shared his Topic in the symposium - "Earthquake Vulnerability of Metro Manila"

The Green Retail Agenda aims to address the lack of awareness on the relationship between business investment practices and disaster risks. SMPHI President Hans Sy underscored the need for businesses to understand that the growing environmental problem is relevant not just for the business community but for the economy as a whole.

“Trillions of dollars of new investments will pour into hazard-exposed regions. In most economies, the private sector is responsible for 70-85% of these new investments,” said Sy. “Therefore the decisions made by the private sector have far-reaching consequences on disaster risk accumulation and on underlying risk drivers.”
Atom Araullo, TV host and reporter of ABS-CBN

Speakers in the symposium included Dr. Renato Solidum Jr., director of Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS); Dr. Alfredo Mahar Lagmay, director of Project NOAH; Atom Araullo, TV host and reporter of ABS-CBN; Nathaniel Cruz, former director of Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA); Sharon Almanza, Deputy national treasurer of Department of Finance; Vince Rapisura, President and CEO of SEDPI, Inc.; Ramon Isberto, Public Affairs head of Smart Communications; and Lesley Cordero, Undersecretary of Office of the Presidential Adviser for Rehabilitation and Recovery. Mexican Ambassador to the Philippines Julio Camarena-Villaseñor keynoted the event and shared how Mexico's proactive approach on disasters have garnered deep rooted resilience of its people.

Abs-Cbn's TV Host and News reporter Atom Araullo shared his Topic in the symposium Media and Emergency Situation during the  2014 GREEN RETAIL AGENDA, The Business Case for Disaster Risk Reduction Manila, Philippines, held at SMX Convention Center in Pasay City, September 18, 2014.

The Private Sector and Disaster Risk Reduction

In future, trillions of dollars of new business investment will pour into hazard-exposed regions, largely determining the outlook for disaster risk. In most economies, the private sector is responsible for 70–85 percent of this investment. Therefore, the decisions made by business in this respect have far-reaching consequences on disaster risk accumulation and on underlying risk drivers.

Yet, the relationship between business investment practices and disaster risk are poorly understood despite the issue being a growing problem for the business community and the economy as a whole.
