"Baro't Saya Tuwa At Ligaya"- the first solo art exhibit of Edgar San Diego, all set to open on Oct. 9

SM Megamall proudly presents the first solo art exhibit of noted fashion designer EDGAR SAN DIEGO titled ‘BARO’T SAYA TUWA AT LIGAYA’
from October 9 - 15, 2021
Ground Level, Mega Fashion Hall at SM Megamall.

The theme of the exhibit is a ‘Tribute of Joy to the Filipina and her Traditional Dress amidst the Pandemic.’

Edgar’s love for the beautiful Filipina, traditions, costumes and production design is evident on his paintings, keeping in mind that the colors are bright and the subjects are happy in creating positive vibes which we need most in this pandemic. He chose to deal with beautiful characters in their colorful costumes and nostalgic scenarios.

Why this crossover from fashion design to visual arts ?

“I turned 60 last March 13, 2020. And then after 2 days, the lockdown was imposed. I thought that it was only going to last for a month or two. So to keep me away from boredom, I cleaned the house, reorganized my cabinets and do things that I neglected when I was busy with my dress shop. However, when I ran out of things to fix, I decided to pick up my brushes and called my canvas supplier. Luckily, she was open all the time to accept my orders. What I did was to order an extra 4 to 6 canvases which eventually gave me no excuse to stop.”

“I shared posted some of my early works on Facebook while daughter Abby posted them on her Instagram account. The favorable remarks and thousands of likes were heartwarming and encouraged me to create more. The choices for the artworks included in this exhibit is also based on how much people reacted to them.”
Just like in fashion, Edgar always takes inspiration from classic masters like Christian Dior, Balenciaga, YSL, Inno Sotto, and Joe Salazar. In the visual arts, he admires Gustav Klimt, Vincent Van Gogh, Edgar Degas, Diego Rivera, Claude Monet, Fernando Amorsolo, and Carlos Botong Francisco.

For his women of style and substance, Edgar’s inspiration comes from Frida Kahlo, Tamara de Lempicka, Betsty Westerndorp, among others.

Before Edgar San Diego became a fashion designer, he used to hand-paint on formal clothes for established designers during his UST Fine Arts days. He was also a display-window artist at the Plaza Fashion Mart where he had a chance to meet fashion directors, models and more designers whom he we will eventually work with after college.

In 1981, he was invited and became the youngest pioneer of the Fashion Designers Association of the Philippines where he eventually served as president for 4 terms.

Edgar’s citations and awards include: “Haute Couture Designer of the Year” in the Manila Fashion Designers Awards in 1989.

“Grand Prix Best Costume Award” in Carnival in Rio in Manila, which brought him to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil 19905-time winner in the Annual Flores de Mayo at The Manila Hotel.

Philippine representative to the 1989 Asean Fashion Connections in Singapore

Awarded as one of the Outstanding Alumni of UST College of Fine Arts and Don Bosco Technical Institue

As a costume designer, Edgar’s credits include Repertory Philippines’ “The Wizard of Oz”, “The Man of La Mancha”, “M Butterfly”, “Aladdin”, “The Sound of Music”, etc. ;Trumpets’ “The Lion , the Witch and the Wardrobe” , and “Little Mermaid” and New Port theater’s “ Priscilla, Queen of the Desert”.

He also made cinematic costumes for Star Cinema’s “ Sarah ang Munting Princesa” and “Ceddie”.

Edgar has also successfully promoted fashion and culture through fashion shows with Filipino communities in New York, New Jersey, California, Florida, Atlanta, Missouri, Chicago, Guam, Honolulu, and London. His solo gala fashion shows were also presented in Manila, Honolulu, Jakarta an Melbourne.

As consumer behavior shifts, brands and retailers turn to online platforms to support and promote their businesses. Because of the transition, many new online sellers need the proper guidance and e-commerce knowledge to maximize the industry’s potential. Shopee, the leading e-commerce platform in Southeast Asia and Taiwan, successfully concluded its second Shopee University Summit, with the support of Vivo, PULUZ, CameraHaus, Human Nature Manila Branch, WM Shop, and Design Center of the Philippines. Globe Business, Unilever collaborate to give students access to free data for online learning

With schools across the country preparing to welcome students back for another year of distance learning, reliable access to data is crucial to ensure the continuity of every students’ digital learning.

To help provide relief to distance learners struggling with connectivity, Globe Business and Unilever forged a partnership that will give hundreds of thousands of Filipino households access to free mobile data for the upcoming school year.

Free Globe and TM data in specially-marked Lady’s Choice products

From August 16 to December 31, 2021, through a promotion powered by Unilever and Globe’s enterprise arm, any purchase of specially-marked Lady’s Choice Sandwich Spread products gives customers the chance to win 100MB and 300MB Globe and TM data for free. To redeem the free data, customers need only text the promo code found inside the Lady’s Choice packs to 2117 in this format: LC<space>CODE.

Each participant must use up one data promo at a time before availing of another code. The promo is available in all leading supermarkets nationwide.

A partnership to help bridge the gap in connectivity access for education

“We are honored to become part of the solution to the connectivity woes that beset many Filipino learners. Through our partnership with Globe Business, we have become a channel that will give students easier access to mobile data which is so important in their day-to-day learning,” said Marjorie Chan, Lady’s Choice Brand Manager.

“Our collaboration with Unilever is an example of how like-minded enterprises can team up to become a force for good, especially in ensuring that Filipino students continue to have access to proper education through seamless online learning experience,” said Peter Maquera, Senior Vice President for Globe Business, Enterprise Group.

Globe Business: a trusted partner of educators and distance learners

While internet usage has dramatically increased over the last year, the World Bank reports that the Philippines has trailed behind its regional neighbors in terms of digital adoption in 2020.

Globe continues to be at the forefront of efforts that help make distance learning more efficient and accessible, which includes programs that assist academic institutions as they migrate to online learning platforms.

This year, the telco giant has extended free access to government learning platforms such as DepEd Commons and Phil-Connect for distance learners. Through this plan, data is only charged when a user is brought to an external site outside the whitelisted websites.

“Globe believes in the power of education to enable a brighter future for Filipinos,” added Peter Maquera. “This is why we remain committed to developing solutions and forging partnerships and programs to enable the youth and academic institutions to thrive amidst changing learning structures.”

Globe also launched its e-Library, a free learning resource that Globe and TM subscribers can access to help them with their assignments and expand their learning through the materials made available on the platform.

To safeguard underage students from exposure to harmful content on the internet, Globe has also rolled out the Digital Thumbprint Program which helps teach young students the rudiments of online safety, digital responsibility, and online discernment and empowerment. The program has recently ramped up its campaign against online sexual abuse and exploitation of children through insightful educational sessions.
